Nice, Vitruvius. I think Summertime must be the most recorded song ever. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that Paris Hilton had a version out.
It’s a lovely piece, but I wonder why it’s so inevitable?

“Get fat, live longer
What the obesity industry doesn’t want you to know
Manhattanites have gained another reason to feel insufferably smug. This week, they learned they are the thinnest people in their state, and probably their entire country. America may be one big tub of lard, but not them Compared to those fat slobs in the Bronx, they are paragons of fitness, health and virtue.
In Manhattan (as in the urban upper echelons of Canada, only more so), thin is a religion. It’s a mark of status and prestige, not to mention ferocious dedication to fashion, dieting and working out. The thinnest people of all, no coincidence, also tend to be the richest. As the saying goes, the smaller the woman, the bigger the apartment.
Over in the chubby Bronx, social planners are raising the alarm. They’re demanding more stores with fresh produce, better public transit, more parks, bans on trans fats and junk food in schools, more programs to promote physical activity, more public education about obesity, and lots more government money. In fact, the Bronx sounds an awful lot like Canada.
Thin was always in. But now, the social and public-health message is that fat is not simply a sign of sloth. It kills.”

Albert Camus**:
“”The plague bacillus never dies or vanishes entirely… it can remain dormant for dozens of years in furniture or clothing… it waits patiently in bedrooms, cellars, trunks, handkerchiefs and old papers, and… perhaps the day will come when, for the instruction or misfortune of mankind, the plague will rouse its rats and send them to die in some well-contented city.”

Rasmussen reports
Obama’s numbers have continued to slide, today showing a -9
Today, Obama’s presidential index is minus 9. His lowest to date. And for the second day in a row, and this is after his infamous Presidential Press Conference of last week, his general approval rating is 49 versus a disapproval of 51%.
The next question is, what are the BackRoom Boys, and Obama, going to do about this? Obama rejects criticism of himself; therefore, he will refuse to acknowledge the reality of such a poll. As with anyone who criticizes him and thus moves out of his control, that person and that event simply ceases to exist. I suspect that Obama will go on the campaign trail this August to heavily programmed Town Halls, filled with adoring sycophants.
But, the BackRoom Boys can’t lose control of the American people. What are they going to do to regain control and move the polls up?
I suggest that Obama’s Race Call of last week was one such tactic and that he’ll increase its use. He’ll be ramping up accusations of racism, white-caused poverty, etc etc of black and hispanic peoples this summer. He’ll suggest that any rejection of His Health Care Plan is an action by The White People and The Rich People (both of whom he despises)..against black and hispanic peoples.
Watch for it – an increase of divisive politics this summer. Obama has one agenda – to get His Health Care Bill passed. He’s not interested in its content, in its costs, in its ramifications which are all disastrous. He’s only interested in it being attached to His Name, like an honorary degree – and he’ll do anything to achieve that goal.
American Thinker has several good articles up. One outlines how Obama is, himself, a racist.
Obama is a Racist
A few comments:
“When Sgt. Crowley investigated a possible burglary at Prof. Gates’ Cambridge home this week, Gates met a white cop at his door and evidently assumed Crowley was a bad cop, a rogue, a racist cop who would treat him differently than any other suspected perp, just because he was black. That’s racism, folks”.
“So why is President Obama a racist? Because he, like his friend Gates, automatically assumed the white police officer “acted stupidly.” BO assumed it was the white officer’s fault, because, of course, we all know white cops are racist, right?”
Remember, Obama didn’t stay in the Rev. Wright’s anti-white, anti-American congregation for over 20 years because he rejected that perspective but because he accepted it.
Obama is hostile to anyone with power, with a power that he feels renders them outside of his control.
Therefore, he is hostile to wealth of any kind. He is hostile to highly educated people – I don’t mean liberal sophist education, but medicine, science, technology, empirical studies. He is hostile to white people. He prefers people as passive, as followers, as victims – these are the ones who are easy for him to control.
To regain his popularity this summer, I suggest he’ll try to increase adversarial divisions in the country.
ET: back when Obama had only been in office for a few weeks you went out on an (apparent) limb by describing in some detail Obama’s psychological characteristics, specifically his hostility to anyone he perceives as being outside of his control. Not only has your early assessment turned out in retrospect to be absolutely bang-on but it’s now widely acknowledged and written about. Here’s a piece from HotAir.com, for one example, describing his prime time press conference about health care:
“This was clearly the performance of someone who expects to be shielded from criticism, opposition, practical considerations, and the results of his actions.”
“What you saw was not a humble servant of the people, carrying out his duties as the executive of a constitutional republic. It wasn’t even a man discussing an idea he thinks is brilliant, and trying to convince others to support it. It was a monarch who could barely conceal his anger and frustration at those who dare to question his wisdom.”
Good call.
Wrt fanning adversarial divisions, I think it’s inevitable that he *will* at some point specifically frame (press) criticism of either himself or his health-care scheme in the context of racism. I don’t think he can help himself now. His comments on the Gates incident — or rather, the mere fact that he commented — were telling, in that they illuminated the extent to which he’s unsuited to be POTUS. It’s one of those things where, if you have to explain to a President why a President shouldn’t weigh in on trivial police incidents he has no knowledge of, he’s still not going to get it after you explain it. It’s like certain jokes: either you get it or you don’t. He doesn’t get it.
EBD – thanks for your comments. And that description of Obama as a monarch who can’t tolerate criticism from the unwashed is a perfect description.
But what is fascinating now, is how will it turn out? I mean, you have an individual who has cocooned himself from reality for many years, who has set himself up in a make-believe cocoon where he is supreme and where he controls all access and all that happens. You can see this in his previous ahh..jobs…as community organizer, as a Senator. He was an elite who told others what to do, that is, he operated only within words, but was himself without any accountability.
Life in Obama’s make-believe world is pure rhetoric, pure fictional talk, untouched by the hard restrictions of reality. Obama has never had to deal in reality and he’s certainly never allowed his fictional realm to be exposed to reality.
But, as president, he can’t keep living in rhetoric. When he calls someone ‘stupid’ and racist – he’ll be called to account. He deeply resents this.
Notice his answer to his calling the police ‘stupid’. Not an apology. Instead, he invites them both to ‘have a beer’ with him. The narcissism of such an act is beyond comprehension. His view is that ‘having a beer with Obama’ is the height of anyone’s desire and will smooth over any and all problems.
His ideas remain isolated in rhetoric. They are vapid, ambiguous, not worked out, unrealistic – and developed over years of his own isolation with the far left black community. Filled with hatred of wealth, prosperity, achievement, filled with anti-Americanism, anti-white themes.
He can’t, himself, move his ambiguous ideas into reality. That’s why he leaves all policy and program development to others. The ‘stimulus’, handed over to Pelosi and Reid, turned into a pay-back with pork Democratic feast – and has nothing to do with developing jobs and the economy. Obama can’t acknowledge this.
His health care – he himself hasn’t a clue how or what to do; he just wants to present himself with the image of ‘giving health care to the uninsured’, specifically, to blacks and hispanics.
His inability to think and act in the ‘real world’ and his rejection of that world, sets up quite a conflict. Since his control is rhetorical, this means that he thinks that a positive result in foreign relations is achieved merely by His Appearance and His Talk. So far, he’s failed – in Europe, in Russia, in the ME, in C. America.
As President, his problem is that he can’t remain within his make-believe world. His words have to be transformed into actions – and he not only can’t do this, but he can’t handle the criticism that results. After all, it’s a well-known scientific fact that the Formal World (the make-believe world) can’t be accurately translated into the actual world (See Godel’s Law).
So, what is fascinating is how someone who has lived in a cocoon for almost his entire life, will function when hammers and knives are tearing at that cocoon.
Will he become enraged and violent as his security is threatened? Will he retreat into a deeper cocoon?
And how do his Backroom Boys deal with such a psychological pathology? How do they protect him from reality? And how do they move in and govern, since Obama can’t move out of his make-believe world? Who moves in and governs?

*”Why people are cool to global warming”
[…]
“Nevertheless, there are two straightforward answers to Reid’s ostensibly rhetorical question.
People remain skeptical for two reasons.
First, notwithstanding Reid’s rejection of what he calls the “hubris” argument –that “it is arrogant to believe humans could disturb a vast global ecosystem,” our powers to disrupt things are indeed pathetic when compared to planetary and extraterrestrial forces. He offers examples, some of which are indeed testaments to human folly. However, it is one thing to overfish a species to the brink of extinction, or degrade the soil of a once-fertile watershed, but it is a task of an altogether different magnitude to influence an atmosphere that we know has fluctuated wildly all on its own in the not-so-distant past, and far beyond most pessimistic predictions of the International Panel on Climate Change.”

“Global cooling hits Al Gore’s home
Nashville, the home of leading global warming prophet Al Gore, has enjoyed the coolest July 21 on record, observes Christopher Booker.
It was delightfully appropriate that, as large parts of Argentina were swept by severe blizzards last week, on a scale never experienced before, the city of Nashville, Tennessee, should have enjoyed the coolest July 21 in its history, breaking a record established in 1877. Appropriate, because Nashville is the home of Al Gore, the man who for 20 years has been predicting that we should all by now be in the grip of runaway global warming.
His predictions have proved so wildly wrong – along with those of the Met Office’s £33 million computer model which forecast that we should now be enjoying a “barbecue summer” and that 2009 would be one of “the five warmest years ever” – that the propaganda machine has had to work overtime to maintain what is threatening to become the most expensive fiction in history.”

From my vantage point, the cbc risked a reporter so they could get a story that would certainly malign the troops and by association, the current gov’t.This girl was killed by a richochet shot by a Canadian soldier,an unfortunate accident.About 3 weeks ago, a school was blown up,killing 34 Afghans including 13 children, deliberate murder. Unfortunately, the answer may be ‘President Joseph Biden’.
Conservative Immigration Minister Kenney:
“”It is important that we don’t create a two-tier immigration system: one tier for immigrants who wait patiently in line to come to Canada, frequently for years; and another tier for those who jump the immigration queue and make refugee claims in Canada after they’ve already had the opportunity to do so in a safe, democratic country.”
Thank you, Minister Kenney. More, please.

“Canada tightening borders to refugees
OTTAWA – About 5,000 Haitian and other refugee claimants entering Canada from the United States will be turned back annually under a tightened rule put into effect by the federal government Thursday.
Claimants from Haiti, Afghanistan, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Zimbabwe will be sent back across the border if they arrive from the United States. The rule was announced Thursday evening.
The government also ended a suspension of deportations to Burundi, Liberia and Rwanda, a move that could affect about 2,000 people. Though deportations are no longer suspended, effective immediately, those who have been in Canada for some time are expected to be given six months to sort out their status in Canada.”

Entirely whimsical and apropos of absolutely nothing:
Six Fantastic Whirligigs
Continuing with Obama’s racial division strategy, here is Bill Gates, the Harvard professor’s enlightened analysis of the words used by the neighbour who called in the police about a suspected break-in to his home.
The neighbour told 911 that “two big black men were trying to break in”. What does Gates say about this statement?
He calls it “the worst racial profiling I’ve ever heard of in my life”.
Think about that. Describing someone as ‘big’ and as ‘black’ – both of which might be objectively and empirically true, is defined by this Harvard professor as a ‘racial statement’.
What either terms have to do with racial profiling is beyond me, but this Harvard professor, with his endowed chair in the subject of race, says so.
Therefore, if one calls Obama ‘big’ and ‘black’, that has to be an equally ‘worst racial profiling’.
And calling someone ‘big’ and ‘white’ is also ‘the worst racial profiling’. What about ‘short’ and ‘black’. Would that be racist?
It is Gates who is racist and who engaged in ‘racial profiling’, with his insistence that the police officer (big and white) was only there at Gates’ house because he, the officer, was a racist.
Obama’s escalation of this incident is defining him as speaking only within special interest groups of the population and setting communities and citizens against each other.
Loved the whirligigs almost as much as Minister Kenney’s ministrations.
I have said this before and I will say it once again. Those who shout ‘RACIST’ at the top of their lungs and a drop of a feather are the ones most likely to be racial profiling. You have to look at the facts and then make a decision. There are way,way too many people that automatically take the ‘victim’s’ side in any disagreement between races,and/or religions. They do this in the belief that it gives them the higher moral ground, and as a bonus, shifts the argument to ‘you are a racist,I’m not because I am defending the oppressed’.BUT,if you look at the situation a little closer, the ones screaming ‘racist’ are actually the ones passing judgement based on colour, religion, etc. It makes them feel superior and anyone around them will hear the accusation of ‘racism’ and likely immediately focus and wonder ‘who is the racist?’. Fight this BS whenever you can.Make those who accuse explain themselves. If that doesn’t work, pop them in the nose, and while everyone is gasping, use the silence to explain yourself.Tell them that you just hit a real racist.
