For all their talk about compassion, they are extraordinarily incapable of seeing how other people feel. Obama can never apologize. He lives in a make-believe world where he is omnipotent. To apologize would suggest the opposite.
The facts remain – that Obama called the actions of the police stupid and then immediately moved into an examination of the causality of this stupid police behaviour, i.e., racism.
He is now trying to defuse the situation, and in true Obama style, he is blaming YOU, not himself, for creating it. He’s blaming the media for its ‘overblown focus’ and utterly ignoring that he introduced racism as a major description of police behaviour in America.
And that he, acknowledging that he knew nothing about the case, still considered that he had the Right and the Duty to comment on a local non-national incident. Why?
Why was that question asked – and all Obama press conferences are programmed. Therefore, why was this question asked? Is it part of Obama’s strategy of appealing to a base of supporters, African Americans? Is it part of his strategy of ‘divide and conquer’ – for Obama deliberately creates polarities and adversarial divisions in order to control people.
Obama only appoligizes for evil America. Its why he feels so unconfortable saying:

Is it just me or is anyone else getting tired of the “teachable moment” meme.
On this issue Obama started the fire and now claims to be providing a solution? In this case he is an “Arsonist Fireman”.
I think most Americans are just relieved this didnt go any further. Everyone wants a way out of this, and Obama let it fester for a couple of days. I can only surmise it took that long for the polls to come in. My suspicion is that there was significant blowback from those nice white voters who decided to give “post racial” a try.
Obama’s admission that Gates went too far indicates to me they realized there was nothing there, meaning Gates acted like an ass and got “taken to the station” to teach him to shut his yap and let the cops do their job.
Could the officer have let it all roll off his back, sure….but THE LAW says he doesnt have to. Obama blew this one, and he blew the apology, but I dont think anyone is interested in seeing issue get any hotter than it was. Goodness, you could see this one coming the moment he said it.
I said he had to back down, and do it before the weekend, looks like he woke up to that himself, he should have seen it two days ago.
Even Carter didnt do anything like this….but he brought the presitge factor of his presidency down nonetheless.

Stephen – I’ve turned off the TV – I can’t stand hearing about any more “teachable moments”. Maybe Obama can teach himself a bit about what not to say.
And, I think it’s a pretty commonly accepted concept that if you lip off a police officer, it’s not a good thing.
I don’t like Obama suggesting that it’s OK to yell and scream at the police. Otherwise, some not-so-nice people will get even worse ideas about what they can say and do the police, and that’s not good.
Obama really is an idiot, he can’t apologize for his own idiotic behaviour, which he probably can’t even see himself.

The irony of this whole situation is epic. In the first case Barry and his communications staff appear to have conspired to plant the Gates question at the end of the prime time health care presser.
As Kate noted on a previous thread he managed to trump his legislative agenda to the nth degree.
Secondly, He couldn’t have singled out a more unlikely white police officer in all of America to attempt to paint as a racist. This man teaches the racial profiling course at the police academy, has a stellar record and was decorated for administering CPR to stricken black Boston Celtic player Reggie Lewis in 1993. Hardly the record of a racist cop.
Thirdly, the whole “recalibration” retraction brings to mind the recent untimely demise of the beloved TOTUS. I can’t help but think this whole thing could have been avoided if those who calibrated the new TOTUS had included an irony algorithm.
And finally, the more Barry attempts to stage manage and manipulate the public through the adoring MSM the more he exposes himself to be the rhetorically rich empty suit that his critics claimed him to be. Familiarity breeds contempt and it would seem Barry is about two more pressers away from a Jimmy Carter like legacy.
All this in just seven months. “Is there nothing…”…..Indeed.

We’re seeing the emergence of a new movement in America, and it’s not going to be pretty.
Now that a black man has been elected President, millions of black Americans are feeling empowered as never before, and feeling that they can ‘get back’ at whitey for the injustices of the past.
President Obama has done his best in appointing a plethora of black supporters to key posts. He is beholden to the thousands of mainly black ACORN workers who siphoned off millions in helping to elect him, and this socialist glib-tongued orator has promised these largely uneducated hordes that they are due to inherit the largess formely secreted away by huge corporations run by white billionaires.
Professor Gates’ attitude in being accosted by a white police officer who was merely doing his job, is indicative of many problems white America is going to face in the next few years. To be black in the USSA is no longer stigmatic, it’s now a blessing because ‘their man’ is running things, and looking out for them. (Witness the President automatically whipping the race card out of his hat at the slightest provocation.)
Interesting times ahead. Wonder how many white cops are going to let black suspects free because they will not feel that their superiors would back them if push came to shove?
ET; You are absolutely right that Obama was not surprised by the question about Gates. Questions that reporters want to ask The One have to be submitted beforehand. Obviously, he did not inadvertently stick his foot in his mouth in response to an unanticipated question.
Given the aftermath of it all, I have to question how intelligent this guy is. Perhaps it explains why he has been so careful in hiding the marks he got in university.

I was unfortunate enough to catch Barry “Manchild” Obama on Limbaugh today. I turned him off when he got to the “teachable moment” part, even though the running commentary by Limbaugh was pretty funny. Had to, I was in the car and I didn’t want to barf on the steering wheel.
The thing about Barry is, -he- hasn’t done anything wrong. In his mind, when he apologizes to some African country for the eeeeeviles of slavery, or to Europe for whatever it was there, he’s not apologizing for -himself-. He’s apologizing for what those stupid WHITE PEOPLE did.

On one final note, anybody notice how no one is talking about health care today? Obama actually said that exact thing this afternoon. I’d say that question was a set-up as Kate opined yesterday, and Barry went off the teleprompter answering it, slipped and fell up to his neck in poo poo.
He let the -real- Barack Obama out to play there for a second. Whole lot of O-bots out there today having serious second thoughts after that little revelation, I’d say.
The only teachable moment I hope is to those “moderates” and “independents” who thought a senator with the most left wing voting record had suddenly morphed into a centrist because he was running for president.
The situation as I understand it is:
A neighbour sees two men, black, white, yellor or neon green who cares, ostensibly breaking into the next door home – a home that had previously been broken into, and other homes in the area the same. He/she calls police.
Police come and ask the ‘intruders’ to provide identification. That’s a basic first step. Gates, rather than accepting that the police are attempting to see if he is legitimately in the house, and also, importantly, if he is not being held hostage (robber holding his wife in another room)…immediately becomes confrontational and refuses to provide identification and then starts to accuse the police officer of racism, insults him (and his mother)…and so on. Eventually, he is arrested.
Obama knows nothing, none of the facts but remember, Obama doesn’t live in a factual but a fictional world. Of his own authorship. Obama wades in – in a prime time press conference of all things – and accuses the police of racism. Wow.
Now – why? What are the results? Well, he’s removed the heat and focus from health care. Obama’s prime time meeting on health care was a bust; people felt he didn’t answer questions and simply repeated the same empty sophistry.
But, who’se talking about Obama’s failure to answer health care questions? They are talking about ‘racism’ in America and the plight of the black people. After all, Obama, in that same news conference, reminded Americans that Racism Is Real in America. [Did Condoleeza Rice ever do that? Colin Powell? etc]
But Obama did it..to get, I’ll suggest, the black vote on his side, with regard to health care. He brought them up in this prime time news conferences..as victims of America.
So, my hypothesis is that Obama, as usual, is creating partisan blocs, adversarial groups fighting each other…and he wants the black and hispanics on his side.
Apology? Never. As others have pointed out so well, Obama will travel around the world, seeing himself as divinely Chosen to Apologize for the White Man of America and His Evil Deeds. But he, himself, as The Chosen One, never does anything other than What is Chosen To Be Right.

Apparently a “black” officer was present as a witness to the alleged crime by Sgt. Cowley and was able to “vouch” for him. Case closed!
Thank god there was a black man present to clear the air for the white policeman, who obviously has no credibility of his own. I wonder if there should be legislation that every white officer in the US and Canada makes arrest ONLY in the presence of an accompanying black man from here on in. Possibly the black man does not even need to be a fellow officer, and some could be recruited when needed from the local tavern or wherever else on the way to make arrests? Sort of a community service with limited pay, say a free six pack.
The good news is – that it is now an accepted exoneration based on what the black officer has reported to the MSM, so no further persecution is needed by the Whitehouse, nor will any further investigation be needed in the matter. The only thing that was required was a Magic Negro.
Now the scary part of the whole Gates/Crowley affair is that I think that Obama has helped to create another spokesperson for African-American oppression.
Soon we will hear Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson and newly-annointed Skip Gates beak off on every incident remotely portrayed as a slight against African-Americans.

A real POTUS would have simply stated ‘This is a local situation and he was certain that all parties would act responsibly – next question’. But to do that he would have to realize that although the office of the POTUS gives the officeholder some respect, as with everything in life – you need to earn respect. So far he was earned no respect.

Yes it is. If you are seen breaking down your front door and someone calls it in. The police have no idea it’s actually your house until you show ID.
He wasn’t arrested for raising his voice. He was arrested because he wouldn’t shut up.
Cops will let you vent on them to a degree but if you follow them around and get in their faces they will arrest you. If you’re white they will give you a shot first. There is an actual medical term they use at emergency wards for the injury. It’s called a “nightstick injury”. It’s a broken forearm from defending yourself.
I guess you think cops should show up at the scene of the crime and not be allowed to ask questions.

It is important to remember that Obama waded into the Gates issue before he left the stage. How would he have known that he tanked in his attempt to change bad poll numbers on Obamacare. If he did, it would mean that his handlers were conducting a running poll as he was speaking, communicated it to him before he finished, and he threw the Gates grenade so to speak to blow the bridge as he retreated.
I suppose that is possible, but in the absence of any direct evidence attesting to it, I will go with a more simple straight forward explanation. While I do not personally think Obama to be that smart, even highly intelligent, manipulative narcissists can do stupid things. Sometimes they misjudge their audience. While I have read and agree with most of what you have to say about the man, I think you are giving him too much credit in this case. Occams razor.

bob c – yes, I agree with you. But what I was trying to say, was not that Obama and his backroom boys knew that his prime time press was a bust and therefore introduced the Gates story.
But they knew beforehand that the health care bill was in trouble in the House and Obama has said that a large proportion of those not insured are blacks, hispanics (and illegal aliens). He was after that group, showing his support for them; he wants them to support his bill.
I’m going on the perhaps false assumption that no questions in Obama’s press conferences are ad hoc and unscripted. This one had no business being in a meeting devoted solely to health care. Obama could have brushed it off with a statement that he didn’t know the facts and couldn’t comment. Instead, he agreed with not knowing the facts and then, commented against the police and then, went further and set up blacks/hispanics as victims.

I read an article a couple of weeks ago, that I unfortunately can no longer find, that backs up your assumption that questions are pre-screened for Obama. In it, a reporter was complaining that it was blatant manipulation of the press, and wondering aloud just how much of that the media would tolerate if Bush were the one doing it.
My theory is that Obama is every bit the racial paranoic that reverend Wright, professor Gates and so many of the others that Obama has hung around with for years so evidently are. He has been steeped in this rascist crap. If he had made those remarks in front of the congregation of Trinity United church, or the usual leftist crowd he has spent so many years hanging around with, he would have been greeted by nothing more than a sea of heads nodding in agreement.
I think that Obama was likely surprised by the reaction he got from the public at large, as opposed to the usual response he would have got in the echo chamber of leftist progressives and black race mongers that he has been immursed in for most of his life.
