June 16th – U.S. lawmakers on Tuesday sought a review of the U.S. listing of a Uighur Muslim group in northwestern China as “terrorist,” accusing U.S. authorities of relying on intelligence from Beijing.
July 6th – Another Han Chinese man, who owns a shop in the city’s central bazaar, said he saw Uighurs “with big knives stabbing people” on the street. He said crowds of Hans and Uighurs were fleeing the violence. “They were targeting Han, mostly,” he added. “We need to hide inside for a few more days.”

First! Kate for PM! Go Kate Go !!
Did anyone see this reversal coming ? You know, the intelligence thing – the First World and Third World changing places. A product of media dumbing-down the news ?
Uighurs are, essentially, Turks, and have the same
attitudes toward fighting as the Turks – rather
a fierce people. They will
wage jihad with enthusiasm.
That Han guy can’t be believed, as he’s most likely a CCP propagandist agent sent to spread lies against the Muslims.
Gee, social unrest in a Communist country?
Go Uighurs!
Hey, didn’t you folks get the memo from Leftist Global Central? It’s officially September 10th, 2001. The calendar will stay set to that date until further notice. Other than that, nothing to see…move along, folks.
Say goodbye to the Uighurs.
The Chinese ruling class have little patience.
I would hazard a guess that the Han peoples of Northern China are far less interested in their communist overlords than the Muslims are in theirs. As a matter of fact I’ve spent much time in Xi’an and Yan’an cities, where the ethnic Han population exceeds 99%, with a minority of Muslims.
I will say through personal experience that the Han people of this region are some of the most open and friendly people you will every meet, and are extremely tolerant of the Muslims in their midst. They go out of their way at every turn to make a westerner feel welcomed. It’s even embarrassing at times being the attention of their over hospitality. The Muslims of course are quite and accommodating as they are anywhere else in the world that their numbers are less than 5%.
Frankly I hope the Chicoms hand the Uighurs their asses. In the comments at the WSJ there are claims that the Uighurs carry long knives for religious purposes. Of course.
Matt, you’re missing the big picture here. Every Chicom soldier and cop that gets sent to deal with the fundy hillbillies is one less to watch the slaves.
Remember, in the words of the All Seeing, All Knowing One: when the Jihadists show up to rumble with the Communists you don’t pick a favorite, you pray for an asteroid.
Bwaha!
Right! As Bush said he wanted Muslim ” Dead or Alive”!!! I don’t made this up!!
Muslim in china in North
they are very poor and they faced so many discrimination in China comonist regim who are not belived god similar like Muslim in India
Muslim population in China is more than 200 million
There are in China 48,104,241 Mohammedan followers and 42,371 mosques, largely in Sinkiang, Chinghai, Manchuria, Kansu, Yunnan, Shensi, Hopei, and Honan.
With just over 1.3 billion people (1,330,044,605 as of mid-2008), China is the world’s largest and most populous country.
As the world’s population is approximately 6.7 billion, China represents a full 20% of the world’s population so one in every five people on the planet is a resident of China.
BEIJING (Reuters) – At least 140 people have been killed in rioting in the capital of China’s northwestern region of Xinjiang, with the government blaming exiled separatists for the Muslim area’s worst case of ethnic unrest in years.
Hundreds of rioters have been arrested, the official Xinhua news agency reported, after Uighurs took to the streets of the regional capital on Sunday, some burning and smashing vehicles and throwing rocks at ranks of anti-riot police.
WHY ARE UIGHURS RIOTING?
The riots followed a protest about government handling of a June clash between Han Chinese and Uighur factory workers in southern China, where two Uighurs died.
But the underlying cause of the unrest was probably long-standing economic, cultural and religious grievances, which have built up over decades of tight central rule and periodically erupt into violence, though never before on such a deadly scale.
“In Xinjiang one of the major sources of discontent is that there is still a major gap economically between Han and Uighurs,” said Barry Sautman, a specialist in China’s ethnic politics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.
“There are also people who object to the amount of control exercised by the state with regard to religion and there are people who resent that the Han population is substantial.”

I was watching ” George Bush two hour life story last night” when he said I want them

all is for sake of money and power and bully them
I was watching ” George Bush two hour life story last night” when he said I want them ” dead or alive or cut their head off”
Well it might have been worse. He could have said
Oh Muslim, oh servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him – except for the Gharqad tree, which is the tree of the Jews.”
Now that, THAT, is really barbaric.
By the way, why is the CBC still running GWB biopics?
I recently wrote a two-part backgrounder on the Uighurs.
Part One is here:

“By the way, why is the CBC still running GWB biopics?”
Matt, as I see it, that’s because CBCPravda feels obligated to indulge it’s anti-America xenophobia. They can’t bash His Obamaness, as he’s a black extreme leftist who, globally speaking, thinks correctly. However, bashing former Pres. Bush serves the purpose of “progressive” Canada’s indulging it’s anti-Americanism. Moreover, bashing the white, Christian conservative former Pres. is totally PC. A self-righteous feel-good two-fer.
Kathy, Part 2 is where you say “Can’t they both lose?” right? ~:D
That’s it. I’m walking around saying “his brain coco like robot” for the next week or so!
This should put the lefties brains in a slow melt-down. Yellow people killing islamic people. The yellows are also communist, the islamics are also theocrats.Where does one draw the victim line? Obviously the dead are the victims, but should anyone care? This muslim sect is close to the Taliban.Still they should not be slaughtered in the streets. I think that is a shame, but if any group is going to be slaughtered like diseased rodents in the street,it is best that the ones who do the same are the ones left dead.
Islamic people? What? I just read the Toronto Star story and there’s absolutely no mention at all of muslims, although there is a rigorous breakdown of ethnic backgrounds, history etc.
Seriously, I couldn’t help noticing how the star goes out of its way not mention the “M” word. It’s rapidly becoming off limits for some twits in media.

Sadly, I doubt it. Muslim on Muslim killing already vastly outnumbers Muslim on infidel killings. By a country mile. But, you hear nary a peep from the liberals about it. They probably figure it’s all Bushchimphitler’s fault anyways.

It’s been this way for at least a few years now. Remember the RCMP assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell in 2006 after the arrest of the “Toronto 18”? The “M” word was never mentioned in the press briefing, and he went so far as to claim the arrested group “represent a broad strata of Canadian society.”
If memory serves correctly, he was even on record afterward boasting as to how he completely avoided discussing the 800 pound gorilla in the room. The lengths to which those in authority and the media will twist themselves to avoid discussing the obvious vis-a-vis Islamic extremism never ceases to amaze me, quite honestly.
said he saw Uighurs “with big knives stabbing people” on the street
The spirit of Islam is alive & well in China.
The “Religion of Peace strikes” again. I wonder when China figures out it has many Islamic states with nukes reside beside them?
Wow. Just. Wow.
What next? The Tibetans are Muslim? I only ask because they have routine riots in Tibet for the exact same reason – economic displacement and ethnic dissipation.
Its very simple. The Chinese government elevates the position of Mandarin. To do business, you need to be fluent in Mandarin. The Uighurs, to put it mildly, are not. For them, Mandarin is as alien a language as German is to most Canadians. The languages are nothing alike. Uighurs don’t get jobs. Instead the Han Chinese bring in more Han Chinese. The obvious result is the economic marginalization of the Uighurs in their own homeland. And then you can factor in the cultural indoctrination and whatnot.
In the immortal words of Bill Clinton, “Its the economy, stupid”. Religion is a sideshow – it didn’t feature in these riots. The Uighurs are simply peeved that the Han are flooding their homeland. Imagine French being made a priviliged language in Alberta and hordes of Quebecois flooding in and getting easy access to jobs by way of language and ethnicity. By the logic of most people here, protesting in such a scenario would make Albertans Christian fanatics, not economic protesters.

“I will say through personal experience that the Han people of this region are some of the most open and friendly people you will every meet”
I am going to call BS on that for one very simple. Go to a Chinese-run business in any city and apply for a job. If a Chinese person applies for the same job, guess who will get it. For all their courteousness, there is strong anti-Chinese sentiment in Indonesia Malaysia etc for one very simple reason – they favor their own ethnic group. It is precisely this that the Uighur are protesting. And the South East Asians arent the only ones who are angry – theres protests in Africa now because the Chinese companies are importing workers from China.
And of course, the ever courteous Chinese have more than returned the favor, lest we forget the anti-African riots that rocked Nanjing in the 1980s.
The Chinese have tried to cash in on 9/11 by claiming htey are Muslim separatists, but they are simply protesting the economic conditions.
Muslim-bashing has reached new heights on this thread. I find it odd that you pick on the religious aspect – Communist China was so bad that Uighurs routinely escaped to Soviet Kazakhstan – they had better economic opportunities there.
There are many versions of conservatism, but none of them support Communist autocracy. Especially in a battle that is, at root, about economic freedom.
Kathy,
I just read your article, and I am under the impression that it is a quota filler – you know, publish a conservative woman’s article to win brownie points. I must however point out the factual errors.
“Turkic Chinese Sunni Muslims”
Wrong. Most of them are Sufi muslims. Most Sunnis look down on Sufiism because they think its too syncretic and contains too many local elements. Sufis are the most liberal strand of Islam and they are wary of the exclusivism that characterizes Islam, Christianity, and Judaism. Sufi saints are revered by Hindus all over India.
But lets just call them Sunnis anyway. Why not call them Wahhabis as well. God knows we can trust the Chinese on everything. After all, Tiananmen never happened. And there is no AIDS in China.
“two Uighur Muslim men drove a truck into a group of paramilitary police in Xinjiang, then attacked the officers with knives, throwing explosives into their barracks.”
Separatists attack a government institution. With one deft stroke of the pen, Kathy Shaidle has reduced freedom fighters from Bhagat Singh to Ben Gurion as, well, religious terrorists. There is such a thing as fighting for freedom. Ask the country’s who have had to fight for them. And succeeded. By the way, are the Buddhits who want freedom in Tibet terrorists?
“A local Communist Party official reported the two attackers had prepared written statements which declared, “they had to wage ‘holy war.’”
Could China have vested interests in saying that in the post 911 world? No way. Sound analytical skills right there, Shaidle.
“Over one hundred terrorist suspects were detained in the province during 2008”
The Chinese call the Dalai Lama a terrorist too. I believe them. Not.
“The Turkistan Islamic Party, based across the border in Pakistan, posted a video on the internet pledging to “target the most critical points related to the Olympics.”
China has Pakistan by the cojones – main military and aid supplier. Clearly you know a lot about the region. Apparently you don’t want to share it. The TIP’s membership is in the dozens, not even the hundreds. So much so that Pakistani intelligence treats it as a non-entity because it poses no threat to anyone. And if there is one nation that does China’s bidding, it is Pakistan. They have to. They won’t have any tanks, aircraft, ships or guns if they stop helping China. Even the nuclear program was developed by China. Not to mention the fact that nearly all the Pakistani nuclear missiles are knock-offs of Chinese designs.
“Xinjiang, located near the Pakistan and Afghanistan borders, has been the site of sporadic violence since the 1990s.”
Wrong again. Its been the site of sporadic violence since Mao showed up.Uighurs have been migrating en-masse to Soviet Kazakhstan since the 1960s. Apparently the Soviet Union was the place to be if you were a religious fanatic. Not Pakistan or Afghanistan. The Uighur populations in both those nations probably doesnt exceed 4 figures. For one very simple reason. Cultural affinity. Kazakhstan is not considered a threat by anyone – and despite its Muslim leadership and whatnot, it got rid of its nuclear weapons a long time ago. But lets act like it all started in the 1990s, because as revisionist history goes, thats when Islam became a big deal.
“Their language is closer to Turkish than to Chinese, and their women often wear burkas.”
I was watching the Uighur women protest earlier today. I might have counted two hijabs – no burkhas – in the crowd of hundreds. Saw a lot of jeans and tight shirts, though.
“Authorities claim Xinjiang’s mosques have been financed by Saudi Arabia and Pakistan”
The Americans with all their might and sophistry can barely get money through to Christian groups, and you expect me to believe that the Saudis are sending money into China without the Chinese authorities knowing it? Give me a break. Its an authoritarian state- you can’t build mosques wihtout money and you cant get money without the authorities knowing. You just make stuff up as you go, eh?
“The Uighurs are lazy,” one Han businessman was quoted as saying in the International Herald Tribune. “It’s because of their religion. They spend so much time praying. What are they praying for?”
Ah yes, the ‘lazy’ argument. Its funny how the Han say the same thing about Africans, Malaysians, Indonesians, and, in Canada, white folk. I’ll take the word of one Han businessman over the hundreds of seasoned analysts who know a thing or two about it. If you want to see how lazy Uighurs are, see how they are doing in the US, Kazakhstan and other regions where they are not marginalized. It’ll be a shocker.
“They don’t espouse violence. They espouse Sharia,” Spencer observes. “Does China want to live under Sharia?”
Spencer is an authority on Xinjiang now? That is news to me. That aside, many Christian groups, and, of course, the Pope, protest against Chinese interference in their religions. When the Uighurs do the same, we are to assume that they want to force Sharian on everyone. I beg to differ. I think they would be happier left alone. The Muslims in Kazakhstan and Kyrgystan, with whom they share many cultural and religious affinities, seem to be doing quite well – radical islam has baredly made a foothold there.
Of course, by virtue of being Muslim and wanting to practice Shariah, one is automatically guilty of being a terrorist. Sound logic there, Shaidle. Affirmative action has done you no harm.
“Spencer is right to caution against romantic depictions of Uighurs as noble victims of Chinese oppression. ”
Nobody is making them out to be noble victims. They are, however, legitimate victims – and their grievances have almost always involved economics. That they are muslim has generally been a sideshow – a convenient one for the Chinese. And why not – a communist authoritarian state which has a history of persecuting all religious groups, now has a fan in the form of Kathy Shaidle, who, for some reason, masquerades as a conservative.
Stop giving us a bad name. I expect you will stand up and applaud when Canada cracks down on western separatism by making the French the national language and flooding Alberta with Quebecois. Absurd, really.
All this attack in china is unknow
