The chairman of $7 billion distressed Private Equity firm and TARP beneficiary Matlin Patterson.
Mr Patterson said the US Treasury is out of its depth and seems to be trying to put off drastic action by pretending that the banking system is still viable.
“It’s a sham. The banks are insolvent. The US government is trying to sedate the public because they are down to the last $100bn (£66bn) of the $700bn TARP funds. They think they’re doing this for the greater good of society,”

Silicon Valley voices concern over new rules
The Obama administration on Monday opened a rift with Silicon Valley, home to one of its strongest group of corporate supporters, as it championed new tax rules that would have an outsized impact on the technology industry.
The proposed changes brought the first cracks in a relationship that has cemented the reputation of President Obama’s White House as an unusually technocratic, forward-looking administration.
Forged during a campaign that relied heavily on its use of the internet, that reputation has been reinforced by a stimulus package that placed heavy emphasis on the importance of the tech industry. “The new administration, more than any in the past, gets technology, they understand it is the backbone of our economy,” said Betsy Mullins, head of policy at Technet, an industry trade group.
Like other industry representatives on Monday, she attacked the tax proposals as a threat to “the fastest growing sector of the US economy.”

  5. Just listening to Nancy Pelosi right now, stating that she knew not a thing about water boarding going on.
Me thinks that her & Ruby Dhalla may very well both share a propensity for what I’ll aptly call ‘truth challenged verbosity’!

  6. Vitruvius:
Lately, I have noticed that if I use the html “a” tag in Reader’s Tips, the filter traps my comment. Has something changed at your end or is it something on my end?

  7. robert w- yes, both ladies seem to be involved in ‘truth-challenged verbosity’, along with an enormous sense of entitlement.
Openly declaring that the CIA lied to Congress, that’s quite a statement! Some are saying that she’ll be gone in a month.
As for Dhalla, and speaking of ‘truth-challenged verbosity, I’d also award that title to Dhalla’s lawyer. Now, he’s a desperate man, and like most lawyers, his strategy of defense is to not merely go on the offence but to be offensive.
He’s declaring that because the first ‘nanny’ complained about a previous job, then, such an action makes the woman’s behaviour unreliable and part of a consistent ‘pattern’; that is, the fault lies in the woman not in Dhalla. Neat tactic. Of course, the fact that both the complaints could be valid is quite irrelevant to this lawyer.
Meanwhile, the Liberals are silent on Dhalla.
Speaking of the Liberals, I still have to admire Ignatieff’s original strong support for the coalition, which he signed, and his current sanctimonious sigh of despair that he was quite concerned about its stability and thus, could not support it. His ability to pontificate both sides of any question is something that one develops during debating contests but, is that all that reality and truth is for Ignatieff? Just a debating contest?

  8. Iffy.me says today:
“And I’m telling you straight and I’m telling you clear: I cannot continue to make Parliament work unless we get substantive EI reform before this Parliament rises in June.
“I don’t see why I need to reply in kind (to the ads). Somebody’s got to keep the bar up in the right place,” he said.
“But we will reply. We will have vigorous ads attacking their record, you bet.”

  9. Now is the time at SDA when we juxtapose!
Edmonton Journal, May 12: “No one tells us what specialists we can or can’t see, as some American HMOs do.”
Edmonton Journal, May 13: “The Royal Alexandra Hospital will cancel 15 per cent of elective surgeries after receiving a directive from Alberta Health Services to cut costs.”
Maybe it’s time to change “Wild Rose Country” to “One big HMO”

  10. Ann Coulter’s latest article starts off this way:
“Not even Dick Cheney can incite the blood-curdling rage of liberals at the sight of a sexy Evangelical Christian. Paula Jones, Katherine Harris, Michele Bachmann, Sarah Palin and, most recently, Miss California, Carrie Prejean, have all come under a frenzy of attacks from liberals.
Christians are supposed to be fat, balding sweaty little men with bad complexions. It’s liberals who are supposed to be the sexy ones. (I know that from watching “The West Wing” and all movies starring Julia Roberts.)
But sadly for liberals, in real life, the fat, balding sweaty little guy with the bad complexion is Perez Hilton and the smoking-hot babe is Carrie Prejean.”
First there was Sarah Palin. Now there’s Carrie Prejean. Both are undeniably very attractive women. One has to wonder if this has more than a little effect of jealously on more than a few women on the Left. Two that immediately come to mind are: Heather Mallick and Sarah Bernhardt.
If you’re not familiar with what kinds of things they said, Google their name along with “Sarah Palin”.

  11. ET: Any comments on Jim Geraghty’s article at NRO about the influence of Alinsky on Obama? Geraghty seems to think Obama is using Alinsky’s rules for his own power and not to further a radical left-wing Alinsky agenda. The Captain at Hot Air also comments on this article.

  12. The Liberals are doing what they do best – muck raking… Un believable isn’t it??

I am assisting a journalist(s) doing a story on Conservative MPs and staffers, and how they deal with domestic caregivers.
Anyone willing to participate should contact me at wkinsella@hotmail.com. Confidentiality is assured.
Note: IMPARTIAL Journalists are enlisting the help of LIBERALS to muck rake about CONSERVATIVE caregivers.
Not an IMPARTIAL story on any and all MP’s – just Conservative’s.
Maybe the Blogging Tories, as citizen journalists, should enlist people to dig around on other Liberal, NDP and BLOC nannys just so the stories are balanced?

  13. Dowdy pre-emptive strike launched:
“No matter if or when terrorists attack here — and they’re on their own timetable, not a partisan red/blue state timetable — Cheney will be deemed the primary one who made America more vulnerable.”
    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/13/opinion/13dowd.html
So regardless of what is done by President Obama or the current Congress or even their successors, blame Cheney. It sounds as if Dowd does expect that something nasty will happen during Obama’s tenure and wants to deflect any criticism.
    Two notions come to mind.
    1. She really doesn’t trust the competence of the current government.
    2. She is rewarding Bush for keeping his mouth shut.

    Canada loves O?
    O’s Trade War against Canada.
    …-
“Trade Wars Launched With Ruses, End Runs
Is this what the first trade war of the global economic crisis looks like?
Ordered by Congress to “buy American” when spending money from the $787 billion stimulus package, the town of Peru, Ind., stunned its Canadian supplier by rejecting sewage pumps made outside of Toronto. After a Navy official spotted Canadian pipe fittings in a construction project at Camp Pendleton, Calif., they were hauled out of the ground and replaced with American versions. In recent weeks, other Canadian manufacturers doing business with U.S. state and local governments say they have been besieged with requests to sign affidavits pledging that they will only supply materials made in the USA.
Outrage spread in Canada, with the Toronto Star last week bemoaning “a plague of protectionist measures in the U.S.” and Canadian companies openly fretting about having to shift jobs to the United States to meet made-in-the-USA requirements. This week, the Canadians fired back. A number of Ontario towns, with a collective population of nearly 500,000, retaliated with measures effectively barring U.S. companies from their municipal contracts — the first shot in a larger campaign that could shut U.S. companies out of billions of dollars worth of Canadian projects. ad_icon
This is not your father’s trade war, a tit-for-tat over champagne or cheese. With countries worldwide desperately trying to keep and create jobs in the midst of a global recession, the spat between the United States and its normally friendly northern neighbor underscores what is emerging as the biggest threat to open commerce during the economic crisis……………..”

    Denis Langlois Sun Times staff
*in a telephone interview yesterday evening, Many Conservative voters in Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound are progressive, something the PM is not. That means there is a good chance can swing enough right-leaning, and leftwing voters to win the seat…..
IMO: Good Luck bring it on chuck.
In the last election there were alot of disgruntled Liberals in our riding, so they went to the Green & NDP, Dick Himba was a very popular City counciler & is very active in the community & in conservation.
Owen Sound has been blue with the exception of a few yrs that Liberal Ovid Jackson took the Riding & he only took it because there was a split conservative vote. 21. In reply to Fritz – I don’t think that Obama is consciously using Alinsky’s rules – which are rather general rather than clear guidelines.
After all – to say that ‘in the politics of human life, consistency is not a virtue’ and to consider this a rule, doesn’t mean anything.
I think that Obama is a pathological narcissist and his focus is, as I’ve said many times, not on the promotion of an ideology, whether left or right, but on the expansion and security of his own personal power. Period.
I think that Obama moved into narcissims many years ago, moved into a fictional world of his own authorship where he controlled the people in this world. Put him in a position of expanding power, and he will try to control as many people and issues as he can – for his own personal need.
He’s a Democrat only because that ideology is elitist and sets up the government as an elite class empowered to rule over any and all; as an elite Set who reject the individual, reject the power of a middle class and attempt to reduce everyone to ‘the ruled’.
But he’s not ideologically into socialism for its sake; he’s into it because it gives him personal power.

  22. “specialist referrals are required in Canada”
This is the crux of the rationing system.
Where to go for 2nd or 3rd opinions after a devastating diagnosis of a treatable but out-of-the-ordinary potentially fatal illness. Where to go when special treatments and surgeries or new treatments and medicines are prescribed but not on public coverage or unavailable in Canada?
While speed in the delivery of specialty or new medicine is essential to your survival at this point, everyone in the public health system bureaucracy you must interface with to get special treatment seems more concerned with regulations, rationing, backlogs and budgetary considerations. In other words, the service delivery gate keepers are more priority weighted to tie you to system limitations rather than seeking a solution to your condition.
Time wasting placebos or palliative care are all that you can expect if you have much more than a common condition or surgery. This has happened to a number of my friends and family, and it has happened enough to be more than coincidental.
I believe patient mortality and cure rates in poorly managed public universal systems to be unacceptable. I also believe the public system, as it is now, is unsustainable. The expectation of top level quality and cure rate in any such union-burdened, state-funded, bureaucratically rationed ultra-exoteric system is pure delusion.
For those who I consistently see reflexively chanting the mantra of no changes to this current healthcare system, you obviously have never had a serious illness and been in the system to have such delusions of this faultless paragon. I hope you never have to rely on the politicians, bureaucrats and unionists who run this system for your life, because any thing more serious than a broken arm stands a good chance of becoming fatal.

  23. ET Thanks for the reply. What I find fascinating is how little is still known about what makes Obama tick and how everyone is trying to figure it out – increasingly this is the people who voted for him who thought he was a socialist, a liberal, a moderate, gay friendly, devout christian, a muslim, and so forth. This guy is a master at making everyone believe he is on their side. He is also a master at controlling the agenda by making a major announcement or appearance virtually every single day. Is he just flying by the seat of his pants or does he have a long term agenda? Does he want to make the USA into a socialist paradise or does he just want to be transformative? Or is it as simple as socialism puts more power in the hands of the leader and he wants more power.

  24. Kate, I to would like to congratulate you on another million. Wow! 13! They are rolling by very fast now. Please keep up the great work.

Not surprising really, when you think about it.

  26. UK Parliament’s Dark Day
    Philip Webster, Political Editor
Parliament suffered its darkest day yesterday as MPs and peers were suspended for alleged misconduct and the Commons faced an exodus of shamed and demoralised Members.
MPs caught up in the expenses scandal admitted that they could be dropped by their local parties. Others were said by colleagues to be ready to walk away. Some who have been unaffected declared that the attractions of life as an MP had disappeared.
It was the grimmest time that most could remember, with many still fearful about future disclosures and none able to raise enthusiasm for immediate concerns such as the European and local elections. As the police were asked to investigate for fraud, yesterday’s developments engulfed MPs, peers and the Speaker:
    Gordon Brown suspended a former minister who claimed £16,000 in expenses for a mortgage he had paid off;

    * Proving fraud by MPs would be hard

    Two Labour peers were recommended for suspension from the Lords — the first since Oliver Cromwell’s time in the 1640s — after accusations that they had shown themselves willing to change laws in return for cash;
Authority drained away from Michael Martin, the Speaker, after the Liberal Democrats effectively withdrew their support and MPs prepared to table a no-confidence motion.
To add to Mr Brown’s woes, a select committee has accused Lord Myners, his City minister, of incompetence over his handling of the pension of former bank chief Sir Fred Goodwin….”
It gets better…this is the best reading I’ve had in ages. Maybe the nanny v princess item is the beginning of it here too.

  27. Speaking of the Liberals, I still have to admire Ignatieff’s original strong support for the coalition…
Some peoples’ “tingle” up the leg is a knee-jerk reaction for the instinctive reach for a thigh-strapped Colt. Many people have interpreted the “tingle” wrongly.

  28. Liberals eat their own, as all socialist cannibals do.
Scribbler Don Martin says to Liberal Dhalla Nana:
    It’s over, Iggy.
The clincher: “one of her [Ruby’s] supporters gave a clap”.

    …-
“Don Martin: With friends like Dhalla’s, who needs enemies?”
“It’s far easier to find a Liberal to badmouth the colorful MP than a Conservative willing to take a cheap shot. Many are willing to share their favorite “I, Ruby Dhalla” anecdote, portraying an MP who they say runs to every microphone offering self-promotion opportunities, but flees when there’s heavy lifting for the party to be done — a side of Ms. Dhalla I must admit I’ve never seen.
At this week’s private caucus meeting, for example, Liberals describe the reaction to Ms. Dhalla’s call to speak as a chorus of one-handed applause. The silence only gave way to polite applause when one of her supporters gave a clap or two and it all ended with what one MP describes as an ‘reluctant’ standing ovation.
Ms. Dhalla was then steered out the side door and away from television lights that seem an irresistible flame to her moth-like behaviour.
On Thursday, things got worse for the controversial MP when Agatha Mason, executive director of the Intercede immigrant support group, accused Ms. Dhalla of lying on a disputed issue, while hinting at new “hair raising” details to the family’s nanny-abuse allegations.
There are still plenty of documents that appear to support the MP’s version of events over the tearful testimony of the overworked nannies, but a mercifully quick end to this saga now seems unlikely as the parliamentary committee continues its probe in a couple weeks.
If Ruby Dhalla’s story starts to unravel and she’s found to have mistreated anyone or acted inappropriately, there will be no need for the Conservatives or their Parliamentarian of the Year to take her down.
The Liberals will do it for them.”

  29. Iggy ,the Dhalla Nana, tells Muslim Fatah to sit on the floor outside the door.
    Iggy is a Cruella Liberal.
Iggy’s leftist politics of “unity”, “tolerance”, “diversity”, “social equality”, etc., is a corrupt sham.
    …-
“Cabbagetown writer, Donner nominee not welcome at Liberal table”
“A long-standing Liberal Party supporter, he does not shy away from criticizing what he feels to be poor outreach policy by its leadership.
“I have just had a huge issue with the Liberal Party which I took right to the top. Michael Ignatieff had a breakfast with Canada’s Muslim community, and they made sure that the one person who should not be allowed to enter was Tarek Fatah. So I took it up. I talked to (Liberal MPs) Bob Rae and Alfred Apps. The folks in Ottawa called and said there must have been some kind of misunderstanding—but it is really very troubling that political leaderships recognize only the most conservative community members as legitimate.
In effect you could not get in if you were not approved by (defeated Mississauga-Erindale MP) Omar Alghabra) and Ignatieff is repeating this mistake.”
Fatah believes strongly that political and media attention and credibility in Canada have been captured by extremist points of view within the Islamic community, often by playing the “diversity card,” and denouncing any more liberal voices as betrayers of culture.”

  30. Brown’s UK takes a drubbing:
    http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&sid=aDVv01l_dAMc
Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s justice minister stepped aside as parliamentary officials started a probe into his expenses claims, plunging the U.K. government deeper into turmoil as the impact of the scandal spreads.
The newspaper has raised questions about payouts to at least 90 of the 646 members of the House of Commons, forcing politicians from all parties apologize for their actions. London’s Metropolitan Police and the Crown Prosecution Service formed a panel to evaluate whether to press criminal charges.
    …
Communities Secretary Hazel Blears last week appeared to mock Brown’s effort to use the Internet to reach out to voters. “YouTube if you want to,” she wrote in the Observer newspaper May 3. “But it’s no substitute for knocking on doors.”
The expenses reports have hurt all parties. A tracking poll by PoliticsHome.com found Parliament’s approval rating had sunk below that of tabloid newspapers.
“In the morning, one of us will have to go down to the House of Commons terrace and commit hari kari,” Labour lawmaker Stephen Pound said in an interview. “If we all stripped to the waist and flagellated ourselves all the way to the cathedral, then the voters would accuse us of claiming for the ointment to make it better.”

“It’s far easier to find a Liberal to badmouth the colorful MP than a Conservative willing to take a cheap shot.”
What I want to know, then, is how come Martin, just a few days ago, was saying that the Conservatives were “gleeful” at Ms. Dhalla’s dilemma? I didn’t see or hear one CPC member voicing any joy at the allegations of nanny abuse on the part of Ms. Dhalla. Martin’s comment about gleeful government members was predicated, I suspect, on his default pro-Liberal position.
So, whose LPC members’ side is Martin on now? It’s difficult to imagine he’s swung right and is batting for the Honourable — and, now, the Popular — Jason Kenney, voted last night Parliamentarian of the Year by MPs from all parties.
This whole episode is getting curioser and curioser.
