In broad daylight, in the heart of Saskatoon’s downtown riverfront.
Let’s pray everyone focuses on the root causes.

“and as anyone in the know knows with a longish weapon like a machete the best tactic is to get ‘inside’ of it’s arc as nimbly and quickly as one can…then one uses whatever is to hand…one’s keys…pen or pencil…teeth…ALWAYS go for the eyes of course….pull ears off if possible…and so on….”
Lets not propogate too much Rambo B.S. here. This was three on one. We don’t know if/how the other two were armed. And even in a one on one with a blade involved its a bad show. The way I see it this guy had one sound option. Run.
“I own a machete – the hardest part to believe about this story is that the man survived.”
No doubt this fellow is in horrific shape, but I think if you asked a Roman about his survival you’d find your answer. Slashing weapons are painful and messy, stabbing weapons kill.
“The scarcity of information, and the non-denial denial are pretty good indicators.”
Yep, I’m with Kate on this one.
I concur Junker. 3 armed on 1 unarmed, you’re f-ed if you don’t run. Even if you have a knife you’re still f-ed IMHO. This is why I’m in favor of concealed carry of firearms. It is -possible- for one man to defend himself from three if he has a pistol. Otherwise it is -not- possible.
Still, the poor guy is alive. That’s because its hard to chop somebody to death, they keep getting their arms in the way. Contrary to a zillion Hollywood flicks. Try cutting through a green stick on a tree some time to see why.
You have to -practice- to be able to do stuff like that, and practicing is one of those things that gang bangers just don’t do. They practice video games and drinking.
Indeed. I’m in favour of concealled carry as well. It would certainly help your odds, although we should also recognize the fact that there is no cure all to a tragic and horrific crime like this. Tueller tells us that even at 7 yards or more your odds aren’t exactly great. Still, this person should have had the ability to fight back better than he did.
Don’t mean to get too distracted by semantics, but its always interesting and important to study these sorts of engagements so as to learn from them. The lesson I draw from this one is its sometimes a terrible choice to play the tough guy. Use your running shoes and live to tell the tale.
As Kate’s pointed out in a newer post, the official response to this has been quite pathetic. Why don’t we know what these guys look like yet? You can’t tell me there were no witnesses in that part of town at that time of day.
Your not safe and your not free until your armed.
If people had the ability to fight back, there would be less victims and less repeat offenders. Why aren’t the police releasing any information? This was a brutal assault in broad daylight in what is basically the busiest public park in the city and we get nothing in the way of information from law enforcement? Pathetic just like the rest of our justice system.
The fact that a description including a racial one has not been given means this is Native. They never describe the suspects skin when the crime is native. If they did It would lead people to think natives have a crime problem because almost every suspect in Saskatoon would be described as aboriginal and thats not very PC. The truth maybe, but not very PC.
