Millions of Americans without health insurance are single men in their 20’s-40’s who can afford coverage. For millions of Americans not having health insurance is a CHOICE.

Actually the US outspends us on both counts. Quite dramatically on the per capita basis.
They do so while maintianing a big military budget.

We spend a lot on health care and we get a lot. If I need an MRI, I get it within hours, or more like minutes. If I need a heart bypass, I get it within hours. I could go on. There is no comparison.

I paid a wee bit more than I paid for Health care in Texas, than in Canada but then I could choose who I wanted to see. No problem seeing a specialist. Make a call and I was in next week. MRI in two days after the specialist called and that was slow only because I couldn’t make it on the same day.

Perhaps you misunderstood. The fiqures you quote are total health care spending, government AND private. They are correct for the sum of the two but the amounts spent per capita by US federal, state and county/city governments is less than the same Canadian federal, provincial and local governments. It is more difficult to assess the Canadian federal spending since the feds switched to block grants for social programs a few years back. The feds may intend the province to spend on medicare but the province can spend it on highways if it so chooses.

Not to mention with a much lower tax regime on Americans they can avoid private health care insurance. I believe the top US income tax rate is 41% and it kicks in at $400,000 taxable income. I believe Quebec’s rate is the highest at 58% and it starts at about $70,000! Don’t get me started on sales taxes on the purchases made with the lower after tax income!
If I paid US rates of tax, I could afford priavte health care insurance too.
