Simma Holt

As Ottawa fishbowl media dissect the political implications of Quebec’s indecent exposure to the word “separatist”;

I was a Liberal MP in the Government of Pierre Elliott Trudeau 1974-79. But there is no place in the Liberal Party of Canada for a true Grit. Nor is there a place for western Canadinans in this Insane Hysteria from the eternal losers–the NDP, the Bloc, and their chosen leader Stephen Dion — to succeed in this Contemptible Coup.
This cries out to us on the Pacific Rim:“if any part of Canada should separate it is British Columbia”.

That would be cute because unlike the other provinces in Confederation, B.C. doesn’t have many Treaties with the Indians so they basically still own all the land.

  2. Good for Simma – now if we could only get Ralph to do the honorable thing and walk away from the idiocy of his party.

  3. The problem will be with the 10%( or whatever the number is) of “hard-core lefties” — They hate all things conservative and there is no reaching them.

  5. Good on you Simma Holt.
The “Putsch Party’s” only mistake was not to announce their takeover of Canada from Berlin (Kitchener), Ontario replete with guns from the local beer hall.
Of course this is the same riding in which Karen Redman also posited that the Liberal party would not ‘be observing future losses in confidence votes in the House of Commons’ in May of 2005.
Its the Koalition Komedy Kapers (KKK) direct from BERLIN, ONTARIO!!! Take it away Stephane!
Vee haf a plan, und it does not include voters!!

  6. If they don’t like the word separatist would they perhaps prefer the more accurate word of traitor?

  7. Great release from Ms Holt.. She has a track record of great investigative reporting. When she was a reporter she wrote an in depth series on violent doukabors way back when. That series took real courage as well as brains.
Glad to see she is still around and can share.
The more folks like her that get out and express thier anguish the better for our Nation.

  8. “That would be cute because unlike the other provinces in Confederation, B.C. doesn’t have many Treaties with the Indians so they basically still own all the land.”
    Hilarious!
I guess you weren’t aware of the fact that 105% of the land area of B.C. is in a land claim by the natives. And they’re giving it away at a rate that would make your head spin.

  9. I am listening to Rosemary Thompson on TV right now and I am thinking that she wasn’t listening to the same speeches made by Harper…..
BTW – if BC is leaving, Alberta will tag along. Kate, how about you in Sask?

  10. I think it’s time to kick Quebec out. No sovereignty-association, just a clean break, best of luck and all that, and then a sigh after the door has closed and a relieved, “jeez, what a pain is the ass” once it’s done.

It doesn’t matter that more than one band claims a particular 5% of the land. What does matter is that unlike the other provinces, the B.C. Crown wasn’t wise enough to get legal claim to the land through Treaties.
Maybe you should read “Our home or native land?: What governments’ aboriginal policy is doing to Canada” by Melvin H Smith.
It was recommended by The Alberta Report magazine back in ’96 so I bought it and read it.
    It was an eye opener.

  12. read it…..them arapahoes(with their legions of lawyers) make the Qweebek separatists look like reasonable men….

  13. Are we nearing a two party nation? Hopefully. The Tories (stronger party) v. NDP (weaker party) with Bloc continuing its nuisance role in Parliament. Defund them now.

  14. The “Ottawa fishbowl” indeed. The reporting of the news, should be accurate and fact based. These complete idiots, need to look hard at their responsibility in generating propaganda. Pundits with opinion are appearing to be more dangerous to this country than any separatist.
A separatist wants to leave, the pundits want to stay in front of a camera @ 200 word per minute.

  15. Where are the center-right Liberals and why are they not formulating their version of the Democratic Representative Caucus that Deb Grey and Chuck Strahl did when they were unhappy with Stockwell Day as leader???
Are there any Liberals with the principles to stand up for the direction their party is going in?? Don’t they see what Dion and this ‘coalition’ is doing to the longterm prospects of their party??
Heh, I guess that was a stupid question…

  16. Old WAC Bennett used to call himself the Prime Minister of British Columbia long before the FLQ had kidnapped their first victim. He got over 20 years of power by running against Ottawa. Unfortunately BC and the “West” will never separate because we are all too busy making a living to have time to fill out the paperwork.

  17. And this treasonous scum can return her Order of Canada at any time.
Then she can spend her days with like minded scum. Parizeau and Duceppes come to mind.

  18. You need to chill, AtlanticJim. She’s only saying what most western Canadians are thinking. We are strong federalists and loyal Canadians, but if eastern Canada thinks so little of our vote that they are willing to make a deal with separatists before the federalist politicians we elected, then all bets are off.

  19. Q: Why does it take more time to fly from Toronto to Vancouver than from Vancouver to Toronto?
    A: Because Toronto sucks….

  20. So we add ex-Liberal Simma Holt to the list.
The list that already has Brian Mulroney’s ex-cabinet minister, Pat Carney, also on record as favoring western separation. (where is she now?)
    Good, an army of 2.
    We’ll kick their butts.
Gee, maybe we should start an online petition to see how many signatures we could get supporting Western independence.
    Two, thirty, fifty, one hundred?
    That’s thousands of course!
That would grab Ottawa’s attention and settle the boys down.

  21. How about the idea of a poll for Western Independence. Sounds good to me. I’ll sign up.
Just a few basic facts. In the last election the four Western Provinces elected 71 Conservatives and 7 Liberals. Now the East wants to ride rough shod over us and install an unelected Eastern based coalition government. We’ve tried, and tried again, and tried again to be part of Canada. It doesn’t work, time to go. The East needs the West more than the West needs the East.
62% of Canadians may have voted against the Conservatives, but 74% of Canadians voted against the Liberals.

  22. rockyt
yuppers, the name I propose for this petion would be “WESTERN QUEBECERS”
    mike hewett
this coalition is not an east west thing, quit acting dumb, we cons in ontario are just as against it as anyone

  23. GYM I agree wholeheartedly with you about people in Ontario being against these fools in Ottawa.
But I want also point out that you guys have had the numbers for decades to throw these idiots out, and yet you still voted the Liberals back in year after year.
So now after the West has spent all their energy and money getting the Reform party built up to a national party and governing the country (ok its a minority), this dump Harper thingy looks suspiciously like a bunch of good old lazy boys now want to take over the party.
If Harper was to be dumped to placate the wolves, who would you truthfully want to see take over?
See what I mean, its just another naked power grab by Ontario.
You guys don’t want to do the ground work and spend the money to make things happen, like Western Canada has done.
You just want all the benefits of it after somebody else has done the work.
That’s exactly the way this country works.
    What a surprise eh?

  24. Sooz
You know, the Libs excelled for years living in the middle of the political spectrum, campaiging from the right, ruling from the left.
But, something happened during the Chretien years. He never really took a stand on anything, and got more pragmatic over time. That pragmatism slowly instills soft headed, left wing ideas, because after all, you have to promise everything to everybody.
The slow move to the left is now entrenched, and, they still don’t realize that they are competing for litteraly the same territory as Jack Lenin, and left the middle as open territory. And they still don’t get it, with losers like Bob Rae and U! in the mix, former (current?) Dippers.
As long as the Libs maintain their chosen territory, they will have trouble forming government. Hope they don’t grow a brain, and keep watching the old 8mm archives of the Turdeau years

  25. Sima!! What took you so long to catch on to what should be elementary to anyone who wasn’t just a half witted liberal whore? But sayyyyy speaking of whores – can I interest you in some part time fill-in work? I got lots of customers that would relish the opportunity to ‘fill-in’ a socialist who has made a career of screwing the Canadian public.

  26. Oz and john begley, with respect because I mean no insult to either of you: If BC (and Alberta, please) separated, there’d be plenty enough money to deal with First nations land claims–and dealing with them, not trying to ignore them, would be the right thing to do.
There’s other reasons, but this one will do for now: the B.C. Crown wasn’t wise enough to get legal claim to the land through Treaties isn’t quite right. The Crown tried. It’s just that the BC First Nations folks generally weren’t dumb enough to sign them.
And the 105% meme is just fun with statistics; it’s just that two or more bands may dispute a claim over some particular land, so the 105% is a bunch of that added together.

  27. Two observations;
    1) The split between east and west is primarily economic. The west has been a colony of eastern Canada for 400 years. That means the money flows east! Ontario rules the country by bribing Que and the Maritimes. The only threat to this is the West which cannot be controled. It simply becomes a question of how long will the West tolerate this?
    2) The $1.95/vote fiasco. It wasn’t that long ago that this was $1.75.(+11%) Doesn’t sound like a lot of money so why get your shorts in a knot? As someone who sat on a riding board I can say that this funding allows the party leadership to ignore and even subvert riding associations. The funding builds campaign funds independant of riding assoc and allows the leadeship to control them and the candidates they nominate. No more grass roots but top down. The CPC is as guilty as the others. Pretty soon elections will depend on which party hires the most talented PR firm not the content of the message. Old Reformers like me who worked for rreal change in politics are pretty disillusioned.
