…the same 4 out of 5 Canadians who will today cheer on a protectionist Democratic to win the White House, will tomorrow blame Harper for not forcing “those Americans” to govern like a free-trading Republicans.
(Hey Lorrie, stop whining. So what if we have all the oil – you get all the immigration!)

Revnant Dream;
Give it time, it has already started.
TILMA is just the first agreement the western provinces will recognise as being a building block towards a cooperative separate country. Started between BC and Alberta, Sask has also expressed interest (meeting in Lloydminister a few months ago) and the Yukon premier has also recognised the benefits. Nationally, politics has become increasing regionalized reflecting interests that unify localities but divide Canada along deepening differences in idealism. I believe it will happen in our lifetime but would support legal efforts to speed the process.
There doesn’t need to be a bloody revolution to see this come to fruition, now that Quebec has laid the groundwork for separation methods the nation is obligated to recognise.

Kate, I assume that you mean immigration is a benefit to us like oil.
dinosaur is the only one I have seen comment on this-
“They are more likely to be unemployed or on welfare than people born here.”
A lot of people still believe that immigration is a net benefit. They are living in the day when we were actually allowed to select for usable skills in immigrants. Now, with family class immigrants we have huge numbers of elderly and/or non-english speaking immigrants that do in fact represent a net drain on our economy.
Here’s some insanity from Queen’s Park, via the Training, Colleges and Universities dept:
” The update shows progress in increasing access to the labour market for
foreign-trained individuals spearheaded by commitments of more than $26
million over three years by the Ontario government since January 2004″
http://ogov.newswire.ca/ontario/GPOE/2005/01/31/c8551.html?lmatch=&lang=_e.html
How about access to the frickin labour market by people ALREADY HERE?
But wait- it gets better— this is our new boss Uzma Shakir, quoted by the Training people:
“In my sixteen years in Canada, never have I seen so many steps taken or
so much attention paid to the issue of access to professions and trades and so
many initiatives undertaken to address the issue of equitable and timely
integration of internationally trained individuals into their chosen careers,”
said Uzma Shakir, Executive Director of the Council of Agencies Serving South
Asians.
“We are hopeful that steady progress will continue and that government,
employers and other partners will build on this momentum to ensure that we can
make a difference in the lives of immigrants,” Shakir added.
And the Minister Maray Anne Chambers says:
“Our goal is to ensure that access for internationally trained
individuals to regulated professions and skilled trades is open, fair and
transparent,” Chambers said. “We owe it to the internationally trained and we
owe it to all Ontarians to ensure there are more opportunities for
internationally trained individuals to achieve their potential – for
themselves and their families”
We OWE it to the foreign trained??? WTF??? How in God’s name do I owe any foreigner a job???
According to the liberal pinkos that run this province, Ontario is nothing but army of slaves with no more rights nor preference than any stranger who decides he wants a job here, (after we teach him English).
I hope you can see our problem here, Kate. Immigration is not the benefit it seems.

Hmmm…….the way I read it, that seems to have been the original “sarcastic” point.
I heard reliable and trusted Lloyd report in a jaunty upbeat voice of the good fortune of Ontario. I winced. I knew that Quebec has about 8 billion beautiful simoleons.
I seem to remember that Ontario had a surplus from possibly the unemployment insurance fund. 1.6 billion, I believe. I stand correct though, but I understand it was taken for the “have nots”. This in the 1990’s.
Sault Ste Marie has the local giant -Algoma Steel bought out by “Essar Steel”. This is based in India. They even renamed the big new pride and joy, the new sports arena. The brewery company who paid for the name “Steelback Centre” bounced the rights cheque. Essar Centre now.
3,500 very good paying jobs. are the lifes blood of the city. Now all on lay-off notice, but not been hit yet. Yeah, I know, Toronto needs every cent it can get.
Canada build that northern gateway oil pipeline to kitimat. Obama will blackmail us with a csrbon tax and grab our stranded oil. The chinese will buy at world prices in future years ie 400,000 barrels a day. It is our safety valve
