On The Road For Newsweek

I watched a lot of porn. A colleague told me the first thing he did after checking in to a hotel was to check out their porn selection. I followed his example. I’d become an expert on the various hotel chains and what they offered. The best was clearly the Hyatt Regency; the Homewood Suites had the usual selection of XX features. On my last night in Manchester, after the primaries were over and the campaigns had moved on, I selected one called Nasty Older Sluts or something like that for $11.95. (Note to Newsweek accounting department: I never expensed the porn.)

Plus: The real origin of the “Obama is a Muslim” rumour!

  1. Objectivity is a fallacy. In campaign reporting more than any other kind of press coverage, reporters aren’t just covering a story, they’re a part of it—influencing outcomes, setting expectations, framing candidates—and despite what they tell themselves, it’s impossible to both be a part of the action and report on it objectively.

Objectivity is an ideal, not a fallacy. It is readily apparent that the press are, in many cases, not even striving for the lesser standard of intellectual honesty. The references to Giuliani as a “maniac” and despicable are particularly glaring.

  2. Well I couldn’t find the Obama is a muslim link, but I did find an intriguing link about some book by instapundit –
IN THE MAIL: From Sumbul Ali-Karamali, The Muslim Next Door: The Qur’an, the Media, and That Veil Thing.
posted at 11:00 AM by Glenn Reynolds
Checked the reviews and it looks intriguing. Some people here really should give it a shot. Hint, hint Daisy.

  3. “Things got worse after that. The attempt to smear Obama as a Muslim ratcheted up. A picture of him in Somali garb was leaked to the Drudge Report; soon after, a Clinton surrogate went on TV to say that Obama shouldn’t be ashamed to be seen in “his native clothing.” Finally, they even dropped the pretense of a cover when Clinton claimed in a speech that all the hardworking white Americans would vote for her. ”
It as from the Clinton camp, Dim. Not a Repub, but a Demo-smear.
Which most of here and elsewhere tuned into the MSM Smear Machine already knew.

  4. Hmm. Thats interesting. But if it has Democrat origins, why are the Republicans still running with it. What exactly is the point of repeating Hussein over and over again at Republican convention? I can only imagine they are trying to capitalize on the ‘Arab’ connection – and the lady said she didn’t trust Obama because he was Arab, not muslim. How do Somalis dress relative to the Arabs? About the same? Distinct? I really don’t know so do feel free to let me know.

  5. The whole tone of the article had a sleazy flavor to it. More in tune with a film nor Era feel of shadowy skullduggery, between boring interludes, of humiliation towards the author. Almost a seedy porn story in itself of political prostitutes with the press as its pimps. Least ways that how I took it. No wonder these people are cynics.
Time to grow up little one & realize your Parents & political surrogates are as human as you, with faults and all. There are no supermen. Its the opposite. Ordinary men are driven by circumstance. Doing extraordinary things, by dint of hard work, sacrifice, with the lure of mystery as a treasure.
This guy quite before the end of the race, now he’s pouting about it. Whatever happened to the intrepid reporter who threw assaults, ,bull headedness, & sheer guts. Who goes right to the bottom of the story not stopping till its told?
This guy is just another “Champagne Journalist” wannabe.

  6. To change the topic completely from this boring topic, check out the front page article in today’s Wall Street Journal on Argentina’s Grab for Pensions Amid Crisis.
“President Cristina Kirchner proposed to nationalize the private pension system, which has about $30 billion in assets, a move that would provide the government with much of the cash it needs in the short term to avoid default for the second time this decade.”
Nice, eh? You put your money in a scheme that is a bit like a RRSP, but mostly filled with money that would have been your public pension money. Now you don’t know what the government is going to do with your money – probably use it to pay off friends and win the next election.

  7. Another hack reporter educated in some professors lazy hazy dreamworld. Give me a break, the guys a freaking loser! Who really wants to hear about his degenerate mind numbing peccadilloes? This is just another donk that chose to be one of today’s none f-ing heroes. I spit on the wannabee intelligentsia. News? Spit, spitooi, hawk! What is it that these, to use a derogatory word, journalists, want?

  8. Yeah, the Republicans are running with it. They, err I mean we, I guess, control every web comment and named Obama Hussein, and sent him to Maddrass in Indonesia as a child. It was foresight of Rovian dimension.

  9. As I’ve said quite a few times….. The Journos are interested in how much havoc they can wreak …. havoc begetting still more opportunity for them to justify their own existence.
The media are nothing but lizards slithering about in a self induced frenzy. Ever heard the term slime ball?

  10. The Man Behind the Whispers About Obama
JIM RUTENBERG Published: October 12, 2008
The most persistent falsehood about Senator Barack Obama’s background first hit in 2004 just two weeks after the Democratic convention speech that helped set him on the path to his presidential candidacy: “Obama is a Muslim who has concealed his religion.”
That statement, contained in a press release, spun a complex tale about the ancestry of Mr. Obama, who is Christian.
The press release was picked up by a conservative Web site, FreeRepublic.com, and spread steadily as others elaborated on its claims over the years in e-mail messages, Web sites and books. It continues to drive other false rumors about Mr. Obama’s background.
Just last Friday, a woman told Senator John McCain at a town-hall-style meeting, “I have read about him,” and “he’s an Arab.” Mr. McCain corrected her.
Until this month, the man who is widely credited with starting the cyberwhisper campaign that still dogs Mr. Obama was a secondary character in news reports, with deep explorations of his background largely confined to liberal blogs.
But an appearance in a documentary-style program on the Fox News Channel watched by three million people last week thrust the man, Andy Martin, and his past into the foreground. The program allowed Mr. Martin to assert falsely and without challenge that Mr. Obama had once trained to overthrow the government. 11. “Checked the reviews and it looks intriguing. Some people here really should give it a shot. Hint, hint Daisy.” – dim
    Stalker.

  12. Good question, dim. So why do you think the Obama campaign keeps calling Sarah Palin a “c*nt”?
Oh, that’s just “people at his rallies”?
    There’s a difference?

  13. Kate
    quit feeding the trolls:-)))))
    ===========================================
    now the article
that loser should git a dictionary and look up “reporter”

  14. Kate, what I find amusing is your subconscious(?) equivalnce of using a non-derogatory racial term (Arab/Muslim), and a very derogatory sexist term. Being called Arab is equal to being called the c-word, eh? Is that how you see them?
The difference on this note, if it has to be pointed out, is that in one case, people endorsed by the campaign are belting out the middle name, Hussein, which is very obviously an Arab name (think Saddam). I don’t think they are doing it innocently – they certainly don’t seem too concerned about Joe Biden’s middle name – or McCains. They are doing it at official campaign events, ON STAGE (they can’t get there without the Campaigns permission), which suggests that the campaign thinks it is an acceptable line of attack.
The c-word angle is the same as the “kill Obama” issue. One or two kooks, who haven’t been endorsed by the campaign (ie arent seen as representative of the campaign). The whole “people in the crowd” issue, as you call it. Theres a huge differnece here – the fact that the Palin side of the McCain campaign has decided to use this as an angle of attack is worth questioning and criticizing.
GYM, is anyone who goes against the current a troll?
Daisy, looks like I ve left you speechless. Again. 😉

  15. “and the lady said she didn’t trust Obama because he was Arab, not muslim”
In a crowd of 20000 people you get all different kinds including some kooks. There was probably someone there with a gun, but not everybody. There was probably somethere who shit his pants. That doesn’t mean everyone shit their pants.
    Get real.
BTW, does Dim stand for “dimwit”
    Horny Toad

  16. I think for every horrible minute of PR that the Republicans are getting these days at their rallies (people calling Obama a terrorist, demanding he be killed, various youtube videos of some of the wildest and racist propoganda being handed out at Republican stump speeches by supporters), there is an equal number of crazy socialist types who have some exceedingly wild notions regarding their feelings of entitlement, big government, and conspiracy theories regarding 9/11.
We just don’t hear about it as much…and as much as I’d like to smear the Republicans as being the party of barbarians and rednecks, its equal on both sides. It isn’t news though when someone at a rally asks a question about 9/11 being a coverup, or environmentalists demanding that we abolish electricity etc.

  17. “Daisy, looks like I ve left you speechless. Again. ;)”
    Yes. You’re an excellent recruiter.

  18. Oh, that’s just “people at his rallies”?
    There’s a difference?
    ++
Do you not care to distinguish yourself from the people who comment?

  19. Very interesting post, Kate. Mr. Hastings gives us an insider look at the viciousness and the desperation of losing political campaigns, maybe of all campaigns where the stakes are so high.
He writes that it is not possible for the media to avoid becoming part of the circus.
Maybe that’s why our Mr. Harper limits his interaction with the media as much as possible.

  20. I haven’t read it, but the Newsweek reporter who wrote the political coverage also wrote this:
I Lost My Love in Baghdad: A Modern War Story
    by Michael Hastings
Some of the reviews on Amazon.com say the book is all about Hastings and says next to nothing about the woman who travelled to Iraq to be with him and died.
Not surprising, given his belly-button gazing work referenced by Kate via Instapundit h/t.
Sad, really, that someone gets that kind of access and turns out journalism (entertainment?) that is to reporting what Count Chocula is to nutritious food — and that’s being generous to the writing.
    Cheers.

  21. Mr. Toad, I agree, there probably are some kooks in the Republican party kooks who don’t represent the party. That lady may be one fo them. You didn’t answer my question though – why are official campaigners paying so much attention to his middle name, but not to McCain’s, Palin’s or Biden’s? Tell me it has nothing to do with the fact that its identical to one Saddam Hussein’s (an Arab)name.
I don’t think anyone here is missing the intent behind that move. Very few have called him on it – chief amongst them one Colin Powell.
“I’m also troubled by – not what Senator McCain says – but what members of the Party say, and it is permitted to be said: such things as, “Well, you know that Mr. Obama is a Muslim.” Well, the correct answer is he is not a Muslim. He’s a Christian; has always been a Christian. But the really right answer is, “What if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country?” The answer’s “No, that’s not America.” Is there something wrong with some seven-year-old Muslim American kid believing that he or she could be President? Yet, I have heard senior members of my own Party drop the suggestion he’s Muslim and he might be associated with terrorists. This is not the way we should be doing it in America.”
Dry season, eh, Mr. Toad? Very insightful on my name though. Very clever. Original even.
Shhh, bar jebus, don’t you know that the crazies are only on the left. On the right, they are just correct, not crazy.
    And Daisy, you lost me.
