Your lying ears — and videotape — versus Elizabeth May’s stack of Bibles:
Steve Paikin: “I thought I heard you say you ‘fundamentally agree with that assessment.'”
Elizabeth May: “No. I know, it’s funny how it sounds, but I said ‘I fundamentally disagree with that assessment.'”
May goes on to explain that the thousands of people who heard clearly what she actually said, in the clip Paikin played for her just moments before, are, in fact, mistaken:
May: “What happened is, I do have a tendency to talk fairly quickly, and I can remember we taped the segment on the Monk Center and I…”
Paikin: “It was live, actually…”
May: “Yeah…oh, but I watched on TV later…”
Paikin: “Right. We did it live at eight o’clock, and then you watched it later at eleven.”
May: “Okay, so I watched it later at eleven to see how it was and I watched and I thought ‘Oh, what happened there?’ And I remember the beginning of when I’m talking the mic wasn’t on and then it came to me and it ended up raising the volume on one part of my sentence and somebody else said something so I was fundamentally disagreeing with that assessment but turning away so the way it all worked out — and I could swear on a stack of Bibles and if anyone watches it they can see, plus the audience at the time understood what I was saying — I was sitting next to John Duffy, and Andrew Coyne was down the other end, and you were there — and if I had ever said in front of a room full of anybody that I thought Canadians were stupid I don’t think that would have passed without comment, so people at the time and in the moment understood what I had just said, but with the lifting the quote out of context, the putting it on a blog site and alleging that I’d said that, it’s created a bit of a firestorm, but anyone who watched my speech at the launch of the campaign on Sunday morning knows that my firm and passionate commitment is to be of service to people in this country and convince them that democracy works…”
Watch — and listen to — the whole tap-dance. It’s highly instructive, particularly when she describes how, in 2006, she was “devastated” that Harper and Layton “chose to bring down the government of Canada.”

Exactly, syncrodox, she’s just the next entirely instructive link in the evolution of Liberal pandering. One gets the unmistakable sense that she’s slipped opportunistically, and with a level of unrevealed complicity, into the accountability-vacuum airstream left by the mighty Liberal juggernaut.
It’s very, very close to being a sick joke. Paikin simply pulled the curtain back because what’s there is there. He didn’t have to partisan…ly posit anything; it was more…matter-of-fact interest.
I appreciate that some tacticians on the Conservative side wish for vote-splitting among the climate-righteousness brigade, but IMO May so perfects the otherwise-concealed audacious, confident, ambitious cultural pandering of the Liberals that the exposure of her shines a light on Dion’s platform as well.
Mudpie.. I don’t think you can or should judge all Americans be what Lizzey says and does.
EDB
The lizard has about seven tenths of roll over inherent in her DNA. The whole “men are pissing on me ” meme comes across as a desperate fallback from a lightweight that has no idea about the big game.
Earthwise…stone stupid.
Syncro
Question does lizzy-may denying what she so clearly said make her a “DENIER”
cheers Bubba
whooo weeee first time this old farm boy seen a “cow” tap dancing now that there is a mental image that needs some “jack Daniels” erasing.
cheers Bubba
The Canadian public, as a collective, IS stupid; we put up with lying, cheating, (overpaid) puffed up politicians and, instead of tarring and feathering them, we re-elect them! Just my opinion…
[opinions expressed here are the opinions of the poster and do not necessarily reflect those of management] 😉
As of now the Green party has one MP. (floor crosser not elected) After the election they will be back to their traditional zero Members of Parliament.
In other words who really cares what Ms. May said she is as relevant as a pound of bacon in Saudi Arabia.
DaninVan I tend to agree with you. If Trudeau ever said anything I believed it was this, I don’t care about the 15 or 20 percent that know what’s going on it’s the other 85% that elect me.
Elizabeth “Yapasalot” May.
Dion and the libs deserves her.
I have watched the original TVO taped segment (several times), and the Agenda show last Friday night.
Here’s what I observed, and it’s very clear if you watch the original:
– on it, May says “they think Canadians are stupid” …”and I fundamentally agree with that assessment”.
That IS what is stated on the original tape.
Then, on The Agenda last Friday night, May says that on the origianl show she says “…and I fundamentally DISagree with that assessment ” (referring to the earlier remark that Canadians are stupid), and that she just talks fast and we didn’t hear the “dis”. But when you watch the original tape, and the camera shot is up close to her face and you can hear NO hint of “dis”, and see no mouth movement of anything other than the word “agree”.
So, May has stated an outright LIE, period.
Now, will the MSM be willing to investigate and tell this important story? I hope so, but am not optimistic. It was bad enough the original comments, but to be able to tell a bold-faced lie, on a national television interview, is something Canadians need to know about, before such an important election.
Canadians, if they know about this, should be outraged. If the MSM is not willing to tell this story, then maybe the blogosphere should. All that needs to be done is show the TVO Agenda segment from last Friday night where she claims she just talks fast, then the original one from Feb 07, with the “Canadians are stupid” comment in question.
That makes it plain as day.
Some are asking why the MSM isn’t taking May to task over her obvious lie.
Again, we want the MEDIA to investigate lying?
For Lizzie May to say she didn’t say what she said when she is on tape saying it, is futile. For her to say she didn’t mean to say that and blame it on her mouth in over drive talking over others, would be acceptable.
Reminds us of Chretien on video tape when asked if he would get rid of the GST when elected, his answer was, “it’s gone”. Of course that turned out to be the biggest lie ever, but he got a majority on the strength of that lie because we all hated the GST. It’s still fuelling the underground economy today although the Harper Conservatives have reduced it by 2%.
Eliza May is the product of her own fevered imagination–which is probably why she thinks we’re all suffering from Global Warming. It’s just her own burning-up brain she’s feeling the heat from.
She’s a joke–and only 30 years of Librano brainwashing and lowering of the bar into the swamp have put her on the public stage in our Deranged Dominion. Only in Canada, you say?
If she’d stayed in the States, there’s no way she’d be let anywhere near a political party, let alone the leaders’ debate podium.
All Prime Minister Harper has to do is give her enough rope to hang herself. Of course, we have the duplicitous MSM to contend with, but I suspect when Canadians see Eliza blow-hard, bullying, DIS-sembling May, huffing, puffing, spluttering, and bloviating they’ll make a mental note to avoid the Green Party.
It seems like Liz got caught in a whopper. Isn’t she a lawyer? If so, that would explain the twisting and squirming and denials.
Roy Green’s not the only one who hadn’t heard of Mz May’s mispeak. Mark Sutcliffe (CFRA Ottawa) hadn’t heard of it either until Friday am and was inclined to treat it as a blog fraud. He was promptly email blitzed with links by listeners. I don’t know how Michael Harris is going to deal with this as he seems to have a particular fondness for his good friend Lizzie as evinced by her frequent appearances on his show.
Where do these guys get their information? CBC? Their listeners would appear to more on top of what’s happening than they are.
Skeptic: “Their listeners would appear to [be] more on top of what’s happening than they [radio hosts] are.”
Understatement of the week!
Frik! Another one! As long as their moth is flapping they’re lying to you!
File May’s credibility with the Librano’s.
At this rate they should self destruct 10 days before the election.
Lizzie wasnt a Liberal….it is clear she was a Progresive Conservative. This is why she is running in MacKay’s riding. This is an old battle.
She has some history with regard to the “budworm” down east. Need to do some more research.
I had forgotten about her Chamberlain Harper comment. I am sure if you dig you will find she has numerous, numerous gadfly comments. The difference between being a lobbyist and politician is that a lobbyist serves only one constituency.
She is a bombthrower. She will have a hard time not doing that in the debate. She will make Layton look responsible and reasonable.
Regardless of how this faux pas gets tossed around for the next few days, here is what I look forward to.
On the evening of Oct 2 Ms May will have her chance at the debate with Mr Paikin moderating.
Now I’m no fortune teller, but my guess is that Paikin will have no qualms cutting her off if she interrupts or goes ver her time limit.
Fact is, I expect that after the first two times she may even walk off stage or start crying for sympathy with her partner yelling “thats not fair”.
I’m warning you guys! If you keep going after Aint (phonetic) Bea, Barney (Bennet)Fife will get you. You’ve been warned before.
Western Canadian; my epiphany was that image of Trudeau, standing on the rear platform of the receding train giving the gathered electorate the finger. At least he wasn’t prevaricating.
“Fuddle duddle” on the other hand…
DaninVan I was a brakeman with the CPR at the time and had the fortune of returning the finger at the first overpass on the Field Hill. Don’t know if he saw it or not but it sure felt good.
You have to watch Liz on question period today. She is being interviewed by Jane Taber and she confabulating beyond belief. If Canadian were deaf , dumb and blind instead just dumb she might get away with it. She made another incredibly stupid statement in this baffle gag of an interview. She states that” Canadians are smarter than they think they are.” I’m not quite sure what that means but my if you take her literally not only does she think we Canadians are stupid we also think we are stupid. She spends so much time with he foot in her mouth I don’t know how she can breath.
Elizabeth May REFUSED to appear on Roy Green’s show!!! What a coward, at least politically speaking!
I hope that everyone floods the lines of CBC’s Cross Country Checkup beginning at 1pm PDT / 4pm EDT: http://www.cbc.ca/checkup
Aint Bea is beginning to sound like Yogi Berra
who once was quoted as saying “I never really said those things I said.”
Another of Yogi’s quotes might apply: “I wish I had an answer to that because I’m tired of answering that question.”
I think it was the voices in her head that are responsible, sometimes they take over the mouth. Clearly she wasn’t wearing the tinfoil toque at the time.
No need for Ms. May to keep making a damn fool of herself on TV. All you have to do is look at the Green Party platform, only a damn fool would run on something like that. I also think no one who wasn’t 100% convinced Canadians are stupid could have come up with that platform.
That said, I love the way she keeps trying to deny her mouth ran off with her and has her minions out beating up bloggers to cover it up. OBVIOUSLY she didn’t mean to say “Canadians are stupid”, but she probably thinks we’re all st stupid we won’t see the obvious.
Its just so perfectly stereotypically Lefty I can hardly stand it.
I have listened to the segment several times, so has my wife: Elizabeth May IS guilty as charged, but lacks the intestinal fortitude to admit it and say, sorry. That would be the decent and honest thing to do. Her attempts to bamboozle us are shameful.
Not one caller on CBC Radio 1 has asked her about the controversy.
The way that show works is that you call up, tell them what you want to ask and then they call you back … if they’re interested.
Why do I think that they’ll never call back anyone who wants to discuss her remarks?
Robert
P.S. She’s adamant that the Greens will win at least a dozen seats.
That’s a sure bet, eh? Notttttt!!!!!
I posted this in today’s tips but it fits hee also. Her new boytoy is in trouble with elections Canada again. A whole swath of previously undeclared expenses were sent to EC in July. These are not the same ones that he was cleared of wrongdoing before. The story is over at NationalNewswatch. Cbc has missed it,of course, along with the Williams intimidation story, and anything that reflects badly on anyone but Harper. Lizzie should have known that when you lie with dogs you get up with fleas.
Quotes?
This fits Lizzy the Fabulist like the proverbial glove:
“As a guest on The Dick Cavett Show on PBS, Mary McCarthy says that her fellow writer Lillian Hellman is overrated, and then says, “Every word she writes is a lie, including “and” and “the”,” 1979.”
May now claims the Green Shaft was stolen/lifted by Citoyen Dionky from her “party”.
The Red-Green party plot thickens.
…-
“Both the Green Party and Liberals have their own “Green Shift” plans, and May has said the basic idea originated from her own party.” (ctv)
Western Canadian; bouquets to you Sir!! You just made my day! (My nomination for you to receive the Order of Canada is in the mail…:)
I agree with Mr. X that May didn’t intend to call Canadians stupid. The first statement at least, very believably was “They think Canadians are stupid” and indicated derision for the “they” who thought such. The controversy should be only about her second statement. It certainly seemed to me that she said “agree”. Yet I don’t see that she could have meant “I fundamentally agree all Canadians are stupid” because that was exactly the sentiment her “they” comment was deriding. So if you accept the “they” then you have to accept a charitable interpretation of “agree”, whether she meant “disagree” or something else.
That doesn’t mean I agree (and I do mean agree!) with her policies, of course…
May is no doubt hoping that this issue will just blow over and go away. Obviously the fawning mainstream media will not ensure Canadians know about this outright, blatant lie. I hope the blogoshere keeps this going, until May is held accountable for it, in the media.
I would watch the “may” clip, but ain’t got a puke bag handy
Excellent EBD. I’ve never seen you post before, but you’re off to a great start for an SDA writer.
Casual Observer, I hope the Conservative blogosphere keeps it going too, you have my best wishes.
Elizabeth May obviously said it! And you also can tell by the tone of her voice that she is someone that could easily harbour what is almost militant distain if people don’t agree with her. Furthermore, her comment that people who don’t agree with an “eco shrieker” agenda like hers do not care about the future of children or grandchildren is disgusting because it seems to me that if your argument is strong enough you would not have to hide behind children and grandchildren to win the debate! One thing I will say about May is she has more gall than anyone in I have seen in Canadian politics aside Pierre Trudeau, but insulting Canadian people and hiding behind children does not demonstrate leadership!
A stack of Bibles? How scary is that?!?! We have separation of church and state for a reason!
To be serious though, imagine Stock Day talking about swearing on a stack of Bibles.
It is not May’s first lie. Her first lie was claiming to be the only woman leading a federal party. Tracy Parsons pointed that error out, but you probably didn’t know that, and you never knew what party Parsons lead, or who she is.
Can you imagine the level of “separation of church and state” outrage that would have been unleashed if Stock Day had talked about swearing on a stack of Bibles?
I work at The Agenda with Steve Paikin.
Elizabeth May had a feature interview on The Agenda on Friday. It’s available online:
http://www.tvo.org/cfmx/tvoorg/theagenda/index.cfm?page_id=41
(Note the show date is Friday Sep 12)
As well the full context video of May’s past words on The Agenda with Steve Paikin that made a splash in the blogosphere are available from the source TVO (TV Ontario).
Judge for yourself: http://urlzen.com/1h0
Elizabeth May is a dishonest flake. It’s a disgrace that she is going to be in the debates.
One can only hope the public sees her for what she is, and that her suck-holing for Dion is clear to all.
wallyj, she has a boy toy? a windup toy? a battery operated toy? no, couldn’t have a battery, not green enough.
Liar , Liar, pants on fire.
Makes your carbon output higher.
Yes. I’m sure she thinks and actually said Canadians are stupid.
What are you guys, 5? How’s about talking about issues, instead of this American-style election retardation?
