Canadians Are Stupid!” – Elizabeth May

For someone who was whining just two days ago about being deprived of a chair at the leaders’ debate, she wastes no time in shutting down an ordinary citizen.
It’s as they say – “Green on the outside, hot pink totalitarian on the inside”.

(Note – context for the video at Stephen Taylor’s.)
Upon further reflection, I have to add that there is a special sort of stupid involved when a political party threatens to sue someone they only know as “leftdog”.

  1. “SHE SPOKE THOSE WORDS. . .”
Even the truth can be considered defamatory if it is deliberately placed in a context where it is likely to be misinterpreted.

  2. Could somebody (Atheist perhaps) provide a link to the original source from which these clips are taken? I’d really like to hear it in context before passing judgment on it. As much as I may not agree with where May stands, I do think that we should be very sure of what we speak before running with it. Do any of us seriously want to stoop to the level of the so-called progressives at rabble, huffpo or kos?

  3. Even the truth can be considered defamatory if it is deliberately placed in a context where it is likely to be misinterpreted.
    K Stricker

And if the speaker is the one doing the misinterpreting ? Sorry for the legal BS , I’m going somewhere with this .

  4. k stricker – it has nothing to do with truth.
The clip is her words, made in a discussion about carbon taxes. She’s in favour of them. Now, what she meant by “Canadians are stupid” – she’s the one who has to explain that. To us Canadians.

  5. I just think its hilarious that the Greentards are threatening to sue Leftdog the dippertard over posting what is evidently an un-edited recording.
Leftdog seems not to have gotten the freedom of speech message though, as he took down my comment.
I hope they tear each other to shreds. It will look good on the little pocket tyrants.

  6. I’ve listened repeatedly to the disputed word in question, including on the full show at
    http://www.tvo.org/podcasts/theagenda/audio/TAWSPTheLongGoodbyeGDP022207.mp3
and she clearly says “I think…” etc.
Someone asked “First of all, if all of you seem to agree that environmental costs need to be internalized — and a carbon tax is one way of doing that — why is there so little political will for a carbon tax?
MAY: “All (inaudible) politicians are scared to mention the word tax, and I think Canadians are stupid and cannot — and I fundamentally agree with that assessment — but most politicians think that if you say ‘we’re going to put on a carbon tax and reduce your income tax’ they don’t think they can sell it, it’s all about votes.”
If you take out that one word, the “I”, you’re left with a coherent statement that’s congruent with her p.o.v. and was almost certainly what she intended to say: “All politicians are scared to mention the word ‘tax,’ and think Canadians are stupid and cannot…” etc.
Or, she meant to say “they” but said “I” — what a shock that would be.
Or, she was changing voices inelegantly and quoting some stereotyped politician, without indicating she was doing so — or maybe she used finger quotes — saying, in intent, “All politicians are scared to mention the word tax — you know, ‘Canadians are stupid and cannot’…” etc.
She did say the words “I think Canadians are stupid,” though without indicating that she was mimicking someone else’s tone. Bottom line: it’s her gaffe. She should just say “I was ineloquent, that’s not what I meant” — such a statement would be entirely plausible — rather than having her rep threaten legal action because someone played the clip of what she said.
But leaving all that aside, having listened to the whole Paikin show I do look forward to her participation in the debates. It’s possible — let’s hope — that a number of climate-change Liberals might be impressed, but I can’t imagine that as many potential Conservative voters will be as impressed.
Have at Stephane, Lizzie. Split those votes.

  7. The meaning I construed from the leader of the Green Party is that the reason there is no political will for a carbon tax because Canadians are stupid.
That’s rather plain, and it sounded like an honestly held opinion. There is not much obfuscation available for such a politically foolish thing to say.
    Elizabeth… toast.

  8. The structure and use of language of the supposed communications director is very unimpressive. I say supposed because it sounds like some one who has not completed high school. If that is in fact the Green’s communications man, they are only showing that they are not at all prepared to play in the big leagues.

  9. Didn’t Empress Kimmy say mush the same thing on a CBC interview just before she called an election way back when. She was tryin to s’plain WHY the Meech Lake Accord hadn’t gone through and stated that Canadians were too dumb to know what they were voting for or against so they were happiest with the status quo where they didn’t have to know anything in order to arrive at a decision.
Two weeks later she calls an election and is asking all us DUMMIES to vote her back in a PM.
    uhhhh
    NO.

  10. fritz – stephen taylor may have created the clip but the clip is a straight copy of a few minutes of the TVO The Agenda. As EBD says, May did say “I think Canadians are stupid”…
Now, it could readily have been a mispoken phrase on her part; that’s easy enough to do…but the correct response on her and her so-called Director of Communications ought to have been to clarify her words. Instead, in unintelligible grammar and spelling, the Green Party threatened to sue for slander..posting a clip of her speaking. That is, in itself, a disgraceful act by the Green Party.
Remember, it’s May herself speaking. All we want is for her to clarify her meaning. Not to threaten to sue because we heard her say those words.

  11. I have slowed down the clip in question (being that I work in the audio field) taken from the podcast itself.
May definitely says “I” and not “they”.
Kate, I have emailed the clip to you for you to post on this thread and let others hear for themselves.

  13. but the clip is a straight copy of a few minutes of the TVO The Agenda. ET……
You know when you rent a DVD and have to skip through the FBI warning ………. in regards to TVO , if it is a copy of their material ….just how miserable can TVO make things for the guy or gal that youtubed it ? And no , it ain’t me …. I’m kinda curious tho .

  14. I think Mrs. May means

but she drop the word Conservative
becaue normal canadain has not idea what is carbon tax or other liberal talks about is
she refer to tax as who really talk in againt that tax for fule are conservative
she said regard to tax she agree with it and conservative Candaina are so stupid with that because tehy keep bring this issue up and not understand what libraal are talking about
as my english is not perfect but that was my understanding of through her sentences was
PLUS if Muslim are in miniority and not agree with majority of decision maker who are conservatie in Canda
if Muslim say Canadina are stupid we mean in the sentence majority of Canadina because majority is not mean they are smart to do waht ever they like to do as well
Canadian are stupid is not first time said from
Mrs. May for god sake leave this lady alone
she is not sexy hot Sarah Palin with her husnband pat her and old guy money of McCain helped her too leave this woamn alone
search engine ” canadian are stupid” you can see so many of that Jim Carry funny film said that

then this act proof Candian majority conservative pary are stupid do not they?
Mrs. May is product of Canada and political party in Canda what do you expect immigrant think of you now!!!

proof it? you canadian are smart I love to know
you spend more time in USA parties to Candaina parties you wait USA finsih you only copy cat them easy give me a break leave her alone

  15. The Green Party of Canada has absolutely no legal grounds to stop you from posting a recording of Elizabeth May’s exact words, if that is what they are. In that case, John Bennett threats are a bag of wind.
    Robert Michael Teper
    Barrister & Solicitor.

  16. Only slightly off topic…gotta say it Kate:
You certainly are gracious with mos-real-foodmedia.
But then you are patient with the rest of us too.

  17. http://www.encyclopediaofstupid.com/stupid/index.php/Canada
I am saying even if you type Canadian are stupid you can find so many siad in google
I am joking as you know but
look at your iQ of children in world
they are weak they are working on it but still
    they are below most countries
look at sport still Raptor is bring mad in USA sport guys into Canada
I told you already I went to gifted school for my highschool and still nobody belive that is happend they think because they are conservative and we are Muslim we must all be stupid
then give a break to this woman
in politic do the survey most peopel has not idea what is politic are talking about and what is different between all parties are
even if you belong to any group still when you are look Muslim you should look stupid and all cnadin think they are smart while world population are not think Canadian are smart people
if you do not belive me do the worl survey then you trust me
people think Canadian are kind or nice and polite people but nobody belive Candian are smart people too
that is the truth you must work hard to get that respect as smart people
you do not need to be patien with me you must patien the fact and fix yourself
while I agree if Mrs. may like to get point in politic she must has a lawyer to teach her first lesson of when she go to public how she talk
for first time she may say ok if she continue tlak with big mouth they will hit her espcialy she is woman she can kick out easier than men
she must get some way to tlak people like her too
the problems is we have less politicla party tlak in TV and interview to fix them how to tlak properly with regulr public though

  18. I called Bennett. He stated that the tape had been doctored and that May never said that.
I would post that to my blog but the damn thing is not accepting posts for some reason.
I am sure Buckets of Grewell is on it 😉

  19. EBD is right, whe did say I and even if she said they, she still believes Canadians are stupid as she said “and I fundamentally agree with that assessment”. She is the one who made the original statment that politicians are scared to mention the word tax and thinks that Canadians are stuped. She did not agree with a statement made by another person.

  20. I think Bennett would have to provide some proof that the ‘tape is doctored’. In his emails to ‘stop or I’ll fire’…he says nothing.
After all, rabble.ca, a leftist blog, was filled with comments about May saying exactly those words ‘Canadians are stupid’ – and these comments were made the same day and after, the TVO The Agenda program aired.
So, it is completely false that ‘the tape was doctored’. It’s a direct audio clip from the show.
Lots of people listening, not to YouTube, but to the TV show, heard her say that.
Therefore, if Bennett is now saying that ‘the tape was doctored’…he is slandering someone. Perhaps a lawyer ought to write him.

  21. Here’s part of what Stephen Taylor says about the tape:
    [begin quote]
I’d like to say leave Leftdog alone because I produced that video. You can check it out on my YouTube account here.
According to thetyee.ca, John Bennett told them “It’s an attempt by the Conservatives through a front website to attack the credibility of Elizabeth May… They took what she said, cut it up, then put it back together.”
Unfortunately for Bennett, truth is a defense and the May quote [is] unedited and unspliced. I even provided further context to what she said in my original blog posting.
You can listen to the original show (which was TVO’s The Agenda with Steve Paikin) here:
The Debate: The Long Goodbye to GDP
    The quote is at 38:32 – 39:01.
    [end quote]

  22. WHEW!!!!
Just got off the phone, from speaking with the the Green director of comunications, at 10:40 EASTERN, yes folks a REAL PERSON answered the phone.
He’s quite upset..claims quote edited, or so, but the main reason for my post was the fact that when I called the cell number, there was a real person to answer!
I have to admit I was impressed!!!
It remains to be proven (da proof!!) what the real story is, but I won’t be so quick to dial a cell number unless prepared to debate a ..real frickin.. human.
I need somthing to relax me….

  23. I sent the following e-mail to Lizzy. Perhaps if others let her know that we, the stupid people, are also voters she may reconsiter her words and her threats;
    leader@greenparty.ca;
Thanks for letting us know that. I guess your intellectual superiority allows you to see the world more clearly. But I wonder how that will get us stupid voters to vote for you? Perhaps if you sue anyone who posts your comments on the internet us stupid Canadians will not realize what you said. Please tell your candidates not to come near my property or I will sue them for trespassing. If they are not warned by you I will sue you for not warning them.
    Have a nice day.

  24. The Grrrreen party is off its collective rocker.
Yesterday the paranoid dope-flag green wannabe truther harassing DMB, now this jackass.
What a disgrace the communists have become to this country. Thugs and terrorists.
Let me get this straight. Elizabeth May can’t stop talking and she expects us to stop hearing? Is that the answer?!

  25. I have listened to the tape many times. If it has not been tampered with, there is no doubt as to what May said. “politicians are scared to death to mention the word “tax” and I think that Canadians are stupid, and cannot…. I fundamentally agree with that assessment”. Again – if the tape has not been altered – those are the words that came out of May’s mouth, assuming that the voice was indeed her’s.

  26. K Stricker, are you the guy running for the Libertarians in Saskatoon Rosetown Biggar? I just might want a sign…

  27. Got it up on my blog at last….Good for Bennett answering his cell. But he is going to have to come up with a way better answer than ‘the tape was doctored/spliced’.
And he needs to grab a clue about the blogosphere – you do not threaten lawsuits unless you really want the material to go viral.
    Silly man.

  28. Those that live by their mouths , should expect to suffer the remorse of the stupid quote.
Now she is really in for it. To cry censorship than immediately take up its banner to suite your agenda, smells like a skunk in a cat house.

  29. Transcript:
All the other politicians are scared to death to mention the word tax and (I or they) think Canadians are stupid and cannot, and I fundimentally agree with that assessment, but most politicians think that if you say we’re going to put on a carbon tax, and reduce your income tax, they don’t think they can sell it. It’s all about votes…
She’s screwed either way. If she used the word ‘I’, that’s bad. If she used the word ‘they’, that’s just as bad because she said that she agrees with the assessment right afterwards…

  30. As the MSM said about the Cadman tape many, many times – implying the Conservative leader offered Cadman a bribe: “It doesn’t matter if the tape was edited, it still has Harper’s voice on it saying what he did.”

  31. “K Stricker, are you the guy running for the Libertarians in Saskatoon Rosetown Biggar? I just might want a sign…”
That is me. I may have to get signs made up. I’m focused on the nomination papers at the moment though, this grassroots stuff isn’t as easy as it looks =)

  32. It happens that Steve Paiken is the moderator of the English debate and has an ad on TV asking for submission of questions.
I am wondering if enough of us sent in a question for Liz asking for clarification of her remark on a previous show of his, would he play the clip and ask her???

  33. All of this business is much ado about nothing, and serves only to distract us from what really matters: How are these leadership hopefuls intending to make the lives of Canadians better?
Ask yourselves, who benefits from the distraction? (Hint: Not you.)

  34. Actually, Ted, it isn’t much ado about nothing.
If Lizzy Borden, er, May, called Canadians stupid, this obviously shows that she believes herself and her political slant to be superior. But more importantly it shows a lack of respect, in fact disdain for Canadians. The sentence was complete and delivered effortlessly, this implies that that’s how she honestly feels.
Certainly not good qualities in a wannabee leader.
But then neither is her habit of walking like a drunk, complete with arms flailing in the air.

  35. I can see by Leftdog’s response that the left have no guts for a scrap to keep their individual freedoms. If the nanny state comes collecting, they roll over and chew off their own testicles and offer them to the aggressor rather than fight for a principle of personal freedom.
Dog and the left are all bark and no fight.

  36. Clearly she said “I think Canadians are stupid”
Everyone else can interpret and decide for themselves whether she misppoke, did a Fruedian slip, or actually meant what she said.
But the fact of the matter is she said those words.
Her Director of Communications belongs in the Conservative war room for his repsonse.

  37. Ted is right in that May blowing up bleeds votes from the Green party back to the Libs/dippers where it then becomes harder for the CPC to pull the seat out from under them.
The greater the left vote is split, the greater number of CPC seats we get.
This is why I don’t want May in the debates. She has no judgment, doesn’t know when to shut up and the irony meter exploded when this brainless twit called everyone else stupid. The debates will wreck her and the green’s numbers.

  38. Ted says :
“All of this business is much ado about nothing, and serves only to distract us from what really matters: How are these leadership hopefuls intending to make the lives of Canadians better?”
    Wrong Ted.
The question is which of these politicians are going to get the hell out of our way and out of our pockets so we can make our own lives better.
As for Ldog I hope he finds a pair a tells the Green to go suck a pipe.

I’m sorry as English is not my first lanquage so have some problem understanding what she is trying to say???
Now we must all remember the long list of litigants the Green Party has produced…”Lucy”, Martinez, Icke (Space Lizards) and of course Crooks so perhaps in the great debate she can clarify in a different lanquage what she really was trying to say????

  40. Oh my god, listening to that is pure torture.
My sensitive ears detected two possible versions before refusing any more repetitions:
Her brain/mouth data stream overloaded and tried to compress “I think they think” into “Ay think blah blah etc”.
She was using “a: they think Canadians are” as a first bullet, to be followed by “b”, “c” etc, until they could shut her up. She would continue through the alphabet as time allowed.
