Well, gee, Roger, then I guess I didn’t personally handle a Northwest Airlines 747-cargo diverting to Winnipeg with smoke in the cockpit, and I guess those scared pilots weren’t actually doing 330 knots a scant 2000 feet above the ground.
Here’s the thing: Descent makes you go faster without even trying. As an air traffic controller, I’ve learned one very key rule. Planes can go really fast, and they can go really slow as well, at any altitude. Usually, they do the opposite of what you need.
BAR: In the days before metric, as Boy Scouts, we were taught to estimate the distance of lightning by seeing the flash, and counting until we heard the bang, and dividing by 5 to get miles away. Since a mile is 5,280 feet, dividing by 5 gives a rough speed of just over 1,000 fps, near enough to your estimate as damn is to swearing. So I agree with you, I don’t know what Roger is talking about.
But as I said in another thread, lay off the Greens! It’s clear no one who would support the Tories could ever vote for these moonbats, but they will siphon Liberal/Dip/Bloc votes. Let a million leftard parties bloom; they’re working for us.
I was going to write some scathing remarks about Green Logic. You see it all the time in Global Warming articles. You know, yes the earth has cooled over 10 years, and man’s CO2 contribution has increased, but that doesn’t mean CO2 isn’t responsible for driving temperatures up! We must act now!!!
However, I can’t get over the absolute absurdity of the following question.

It only makes sense to those who “know” that the US slaughtered its own citizens on 9-11. Otherwise its stupidity is on a scale near impossible to imagine in a civilized, educated, society.

Hmm. Interesting debate. I especially like the wee little tiny hole in the pentagon where that humongous plane apparently crashed into it.

I would have to assume that you have been there , at the pentagon, at the hole ,as I have been ,to make such a statement. If you have not been there personally and objectively , then withdraw you comments.
Do people polarize political debates because it takes too much effort to see in more shades than black and white, or because that’s really how they see the world?
And do people believe conspiracy theories because they really believe there’s some giant international cover-up out to get them, or because they seem to have a problem with their brain being missing? The United States Government couldn’t even organize a break-in and burglary at a hotel without anyone finding out.
Most “truthers” have lost interest in the crazy Pentagon theories, but we seem to still have one who hasn’t. This has been debunked a zillion time, so what’s once more?

When American Airlines Flight 77 hit the Pentagon’s exterior wall, Ring E, it created a hole approximately 75 ft. wide, according to the ASCE Pentagon Building Performance Report. The exterior facade collapsed about 20 minutes after impact, but ASCE based its measurements of the original hole on the number of first-floor support columns that were destroyed or damaged. Computer simulations confirmed the findings.
Why wasn’t the hole as wide as a 757’s 124-ft.-10-in. wingspan? A crashing jet doesn’t punch a cartoon-like outline of itself into a reinforced concrete building, says ASCE team member Mete Sozen, a professor of structural engineering at Purdue University. In this case, one wing hit the ground; the other was sheared off by the force of the impact with the Pentagon’s load-bearing columns, explains Sozen, who specializes in the behavior of concrete buildings. What was left of the plane flowed into the structure in a state closer to a liquid than a solid mass. “If you expected the entire wing to cut into the building,” Sozen tells PM, “it didn’t happen.”
