Let’s see a wholesaler needs to make say 15 point margin,so if gas costs him $1.00 a liter to refine he needs to wholesale it for $1.17. If you add a say a 5% “Shaft Tax”on the $1.00 cost so now the real cost is $1.05 he now has to sell it for $1.23.
The retailer now has to make say 15 point margin as well. So the $1.17 wholesale cost (without tax)he is paying will translate to $1.37 a liter retail. The “Shaft Tax” applied wholesale cost of $1.23 with the same retail margin will retail for $1.44.
So that initial $.05 “Shaft Tax” at wholesale is now $.07 at retail. And of course the GST take would be higher as well.
Yea sure looks revenue neutral to me.
The theme and few specifics offered in the green shaft documents I read have this Liberal fantasy revenue grab taxing (heavily) energy producers and consumers and most of the energy delivery supply and marketing chains.
So much of the green shaft isn’t explained or left open to speculation and future legislating…which I assume will continue to inflate energy costs under the assumption our winters are vanishing and the driving distances across the nation have magically decreased .
At best it displays Librano detachment from reality…
At worst It reveals a kleptocratic ruling junta with little empathy for those they victimize with rapacious taxing policy.
Like the dude from North-west Ontario said, the Green Shaft is “the most aggressive anti-poverty program in 40 years”. It is just the devil in the details that will get us all.
Kim Campbell screwed up big time when she said that the voters don’t want to discus the issues but in all honesty, there is more truth in that statement than most are willing to admit. Obama is running a celebrity popularity contest down south and Dijon is making up this Green Shaft thing as he goes along. Even his salespeople don’t know the details. It’s getting hard to tell the politician from the used car salespeople.

This tax plan is the most insidious cash grab imaginable.
Any thing, person or process can be taxed.
You manufacture something, you’ll be taxed. You transport goods, you’ll be taxed. Have a store selling the product, you’ll be taxed for storing the stuff, because it takes energy.
The scariest part is that the government will set the rates on how much GHG is produced, not because of any scientific measuring process but because on what they think is the proper amount.
Vehicle insurance for example, especially provincial ones, you’re rates will be adjusted (upward from the current rates) on how much GHG they believe your vehicle produces.
If you heat your house with gas or oil, you will be taxed on how much GHGs you produce in heating your home.
Believe me, if a person sits down and thinks of ways of implementing this tax, dollars to donuts, some bureaucrat has thought of it and more.
This tax is not only a wealth distribution scheme it is also a social engineering program, coercing the populace to change their life styles because of costs associated in day to day living.
Sweden is used as an example how this type of tax has been implemented and how they have lowered their emissions because of it. I wonder is it because nobody can afford to do anything because of increased living costs due to this tax?
No amount of tax cuts will equal the amount of tax paid with this most insidious greedy theft.

All utility companies, and every other business, have to make a profit. When consumption goes down, prices go up. Then you get a notice on your utility bill with something like this, due to lower demand we will be increasing costs by so much. Our gas company is raising the price per gj by 6.00, to 12.00, due to demand being less and costs higher last winter.
The main benefit for the liberals with this shaft is that they will now pass money in green envelopes instead of brown.
Will my check exceed the losses that I will incur?
For example:
If I lose my job because my company leaves or loses contract, will that check be for the amount of lost income?
If my family splits up because the stress is too great from losing my job, will the check cover counseling & divorce lawyers.
If someone I know commits suicide because all of his investments tank and he loses his shirt, will the check cover the families funeral costs?
Job loss, divorce and suicide are some of the benefits that Albertan’s reaped from NEP. I’m not sure if my father got a check or not!

The carbon tax will be applied at the wholesale level and then passed on to the consumer together with the GST and PST on top of that. This Green Shift Tax (GST) will be a big money-maker for a Dion Liberal government … leaving plenty of money left over for social programs and buying Billion$$$$ of Chinese Carbon Credits to meet our 2012 Kyoto “obligations” (per page 16 of the Green Shift)..

What is it that HF does not understand? Most price increases, save tax hikes, happen as the production and wholesale level, which in themselves are not necessarily the same thing.
Maybe the Grits should study their Green Shaft plan more closely; oh right, they’re too busy trying, again, to prove the Tories are just as corrupt as they are. Tune in tomorow when the Commons “Ethics Committee” hears from another Grit that in/out accounting is OK as long as it only involves a little bit of money, and, of course, Tories aren’t doing it.
