I can normally understand the anachronistic reasoning that leads to these types of decisions – understand it but usually not agree with it. This is one case where I do not even understand the reasoning.
It appears as though there was a law requiring “Asiatic immigrants” to be in possession of $200.00 . That certainly is not too much today. I can only estimate what it would have been like in 1914. Assuming a labour rate of $1 per day, it seems like about 6 months wages for an average labourer. That does not seem unreasonable considering that one is expected to purchase some things upon arrival.
I expect (using modern anachronistic reasoning) that the big issue is the Asiatic part. We can only guess what were their reasons for this policy; I suspect it would have had something to do with having the funds necessary to return to the homeland in the event that was required. The travel to Asia would certainly entail a larger cost than the costs to, say, Europe.
Even if the reason for the policy were motivated by other reasons that our modern anachronistic reasoning has accurately identified, I agree with others that the modern generation is not responsible for the actions of a previous generation.

It assumes that IF the people and govt of an era were, what..wiser, more moral, drank more milk and less bottled water, whatever…then, such and such wouldn’t have happened.
