Toronto Liberals

Our electoral superiors!

JD Wood from Toronto, Canada writes: The last thing we need is an elected senate. There is a reason senators are chosen for their wisdom, education, and experience — not their electability. This so called U.S. idea of “elitism” is absurd… I would RATHER have an “elitist” in the senate than some dolt who might invite you to a pig roast and beer party. The senate exists to protect the electorate from itself when they make major mistakes (e.g. electing Harper). I do not trust the ignorant masses to tie their shoes nevermind elect senators. What is next… soon when I go to the doctor my diagnosis will be determined by the democratic ignorance of the people? How about instead, educated specialists with advanced knowledge continue to treat the cancer that is killing Canada — Harper, the Reform party, and its populism.

h/t to reader Johann.

1. Hey, you know what? The scary thing is that JD in all his wisdom pretty much captures the zeitgeist of any one of our major universities or erstwhile cultural institutions. He just states the matter in somewhat un-subtle form. It is the liberal man’s burden to rule the sweaty masses (he is told) and the buy-in for the kids is that you too can be one of the chosen few. This is heady stuff, especially for young folks who thanks to the administration of said same elites, are left with little in the way of a sense of themselves.

2. JD Wood is little more than a G&M plant. He/she/it very often is the first poster on a number of subjects. The entire G&M website comments section is highly manipulated by the G&M and they even play little games like making it appear that your comments are posted when they really aren’t. It is typically biased as one would expect from the G&M. They have another guy who always claims to be a global warming expert with his own website which is little more than connections to UN propaganda.

3. Atlantic Jim – LOL I guess you’d think that Ontario is in the West however while it is west of you it is quite a way east of me. Lets settle on “central” Canada.

4. Does anyone remember a few short years ago when that deep thinking “musician” the great Tommy Banks was bleating that we needed 1.40 a litre gas to slow usage and save the “planet”, oh yes now the two bit twit from the dope infested jazz world got his wish and it is Harpers fault the imbecile liberals and ndpeers think, unreal. As far as Jerk Dick Wood in the gloat and wail, well that says all you need to know about Toronto, over the years I have had to hire a few of Ontarios excrements that moved here to Alberta, it is quite possible that they have a few useful people in that province but if the limp dicks they send out here are any indication, well move west kingston lad we need thinkers like you and keep the fools like Woods in Toronto, the cesspool on the lake!

5. “chosen for their wisdom, education and experience..”, this caused me to fall off my chair due to laughing so hard. Surely this man should seek medical treatment or be locked up.

6. Sounds like nothing but a Liberal talking hat to me.
If JD Wood’s doctor had as much relevant wisdom and education as the average senator, I think he’d actually prefer to be diagnosed by the “average democratic ignorance of the people”.

7. Please, Many of us from Ontario are embarrased as it is over the electoral record of our province.
We keep fighting the fight and hope that such matters are at least cyclical.
To be constantly belittled by our Conservative brothers from other provinces, is maddening.
If you have any ideas to help the situation please pass them along.
Forgetting that the Ontario you love to slag, is populated by millions like yourself, shows that you may be somewhat juvenile.

8. Although I think I wasted about 10 seconds reading the article by the JD guy, I did enjoy some of the ideas. Mainly-draft Kate for a Senate election, she would make us all proud and could have a profound impact on the Senate as it exists today.
Atlantic Jim-Lol
Westerners know where the border ends and we can’t tell you.

9. maybe he is just trying to change the channel on the really bad news in TorStar toady that Steffi has hit 10% in the polls and continues to dig.
Time for a new policy . . . hmmmm let’s increase taxes on energy !!

10. This country has a cramp in its Upper Canada.
“The senate exists to protect the electorate from itself” — Ayep, and that’s pretty much why Toronto Liberals exist, to protect Canada from non-GTA Canadians.
Hunter at climbingoutofthedark just posted a YouTube of the prime minister doing that very un-Canadian (by virtue of being un-LPC) thing of actually answering, intelligently and respectfully, the questions that are asked of him — made possible in this case because he was not surrounded by LPC operative buffet-remora. The first person to comment on the video, “Simcoevideo”, types:
“Canada-hating dirtbag. I haven’t heard so many references to ‘liberals’ since Bin Ladens last video….”
(note: the prime minister didn’t use the word ‘liberal’ once)
“…Harper and his antiCanadian cells must go…These terrorists fear the media for a reason — all terrorists hate having light shed on their activities.”
It’s almost cute.

11. Doowleb, I think the dissatisfaction is really with the “Toronto Elite”, not all Ontarians. God forbid. We have Ontarians here on this board, exemplary conservative Canadians to be sure and proud to have ’em too.

12. “The senate exists to protect the electorate from itself….”
But this so-called ‘elitism’ is not absurd.

13. I read some of the comments at the glob and flail, one from Bill Harrison caught my eye – whining for a Senator for the Yukon. The Yukon is sadly misunderstood by the rest of Canada. The Yukon used to be a wonderful, free enterprise based territory that was home to individuals who were so independant that they basically ignored all gument. We had a MP (Eric Nielson) who understood us and the world that we all loved, protected, and stupidly; took for granted.
In the late 80’s the Yukon lost it’s soul: Eric quit and the Territorial (Conservative) outfit tried to become ‘sophisticated'(they wanted to ‘clean up with southern eastern ideas), lost their supporters and a dipper gov’t was allowed to take over (real Yukoners didn’t vote). After that horrible event, Yukoners moved out in droves because the dippers made life here impossible for independant miners/businessmen to make a living. After the dippers flushed out all but a handful of real Yukoners the Puffins moved in for the kill -Crouton and the environmental fanatics – Johnny Crouton promised Aline that the Yukon could be her own Park!! A park it is – it is a luxury welfare park totally dependant on Federal transfers from the producers of wealth in southern Canada.
The Yukon needs no more politicians bleating at the Feds for more $$. If I were a southern taxpayer I would resent paying a whole territory of paper shufflers BIG subsidized wages (plus Norther allowances and free airfare for themselves and their families to southern destinations twice a year). The min gov’t wage (for a dishwasher!) is $23.92 per hour.
Worse yet,(to add insult to injury) the territorial government is busy negotiating with China to allow the Chinese to bring in their own slave labour to haul out our precious metals ( Canadians and Americans cannot afford to mine here because we must follow environmental/WCB rules and we must pay the hired help!). No squawks from the greenies about the planned Chinese rape…funny how that is.
The Yukon needs ‘help’ alright but not the kind that Bill Harrison (who is an artist and probably wants the Senate job!) suggests…the Yukon needs to move off the Fed government banquet table and get a all grown up survival plan in place. This territory has been the howling baby of the Confederation who refuses to grow up or even feed him/her self. The ‘baby’ is adopted and comes from a failed genetic line.
We do not require an appointed Senator to add to the bill.

14. Hey, I’m from Ontario. I’m no leftard.
Leftards are national. They even have them in Alberta, albeit in small numbers and they get to hunt them on Sundays…

15. 3 easy steps to solve JD’s malcontent with Canada. Convert to Islam, marry a Muslim and move to Kuwait. You will be forever ruled by elitists…your wet dream come true!!
One less Progressive in Canada will be a good start!

16. Journalism was my first career out of university, and I met a lot of politicians for the first time in my life. I was sufficiently naive to be surprised at finding out there was nothing special about most of the people we elect. There’s lots of exceptions, most aren’t as bad as we enjoy thinking, but anybody who has some kind of trust in their special abilities is a moron.

17. Ah, yes. Mr. Wood.
If I may take the liberty of translating his verbal bowel movement into English, Mr. Wood means that people are stupid and must be controlled.
Its a popular conceit here in Ontario, one that I’ve been running in to a lot lately. Every time I do I have to restrain myself from screaming “Control THIS you @(*%)^%%!!!” and knocking the offending moron on their tea kettle.
Restraint is good. We like restraint. Restraiiiint, Phantom.

18. Well, if what is happening in Ontario right now is any indication of how these arsehole libranos would run the country, man we would be in deep trouble.
And, as an original Ontario member of the Reform Party, I have never been forgiven by the local “elites” for being a very loud front man for the movement. They are still seething about the fact that us Reformers propelled Mike Harris(Ontario’s 2nd best premier ever, next to Bill Davis)into power, and, at best, put the brakes on the next generation of “progressive” social engineering.
Toronto is turning into a sewer, the tourists have stopped coming because of the crime and filth, their real estate is now starting to depreciate and the auto industry is heading for a free fall.
They have to blame someone, and the Reform Party seems to be just as good as a straw man as any other disbanded group(LMAO).
As a lifelong resident of Ontario, I am ashamed and humiliated by these “elitist” buffoons who think they have some god given right to pick my pocket and tell me how to live my life.
VOTE REFORM !
GO ARMY !

19. Dooeleb, Sounder and Warwick.
Include me in your group. Definitely many people confuse the Toronto Elite with the rest of us Ontarians.

20. Atlanticjim–you are wrong-TO is eastern.
“THE REFORM PARTY” motto was west want in!
Harper sold us out with B.S and Peter M
“THE NEW REFORM PARTY”motto should be the west wants out!
NEW WEST FREE WEST **WESTERN CANADA**
we did not a get a accord=vote buy by lieberals

21. Kingstonlad. I agree with everything you say with the exception of Bill Davis. He did irrepairable
harm to the province with his funding for Catholic Schools as well as his adoption of the infamous Hall-Dennis Report. Davis, in his dotage,
turned liberal and basically fomented the “progressive” movement in Ontario.
Gimme the old curmudgeons Leslie Frost and George Drew any day over Davis.

22. Maybe so, but he built the infrastructure we have today, including our world class college system(much to the chagrin of the asswipe university crowd).
And as far as the catholic schools are concerned, my non catholic daughter attended one, and she could not have went to a better school.(Regiopolis Notre Dame, Canada’s first high school).

23. As a western canadian, I feel horribly offened by all of JD’s comments. Where is the OHRC to relieve the horrendous pain and suffering this man has inflicted upon me.

24. Sorry the tears were in my eyes, that would be offended not offened.

25. LOL the socialist leftards are showing their true colors, don’t let the unwashed masses vote for what’s important in Canada let the elite tell them what’s important. Anyone have any doubts that the socialist leftards are communist in their beliefs??? Total control of this country whilst we sit home and play good dog to our masters.
Not in this life time.

26. I just attended a pig roast on the long weekend in backwoods Ab.JD and by golly there was some beer there also. Was a great time had by all and with some of the finest folks this country has produced. Oh by the way it was also a 90th b-day party for my mother-in-law.I don’t think there was ever a time any of them ever voted Lieberal either. We like our politicians honest like the Conservatives, no need to be passing brown paper bags of money to our friends as we are all hard working and independent.By the way has anyone seen that 40 million the Lieberals stole from all us hard working taxpayers?

27. “…chosen for their wisdom, education, and experience…”? Give me a break! This bunch of leeches from the public purse are appointed because of party affiliation, party loyalty, and their ability to raise money for the party. Watch them on any public affairs program and they hew to the party line like it was the gospel. There is no ‘sober, second thought’. It is obvious that partisanship drives them as much as it does the goofs we get to elect. The only consideration is: what does the party want.

I agree, we need to let guys like this cut the grass so the snakes will show. People use suppression of speech to hide their actions. I would rather have a racist use the “n” bomb than keep it to himself. at least this way I know who the ‘A’hole is.
wes
I also agree with your post. IMO the aforementioned groups(social workers, teachers ect) have what I call “wage envy”. It picks their asses that the plumbers and such make more money than they do. From their perspective the rest of us just don’t understand how important they are. One time a a caller on J.Gormely complained that nurses were making too much money because his girlfriend was in school twice as long to be a pharmacist and made quite a bit less. I went to school for half that of a nurse, I wonder what he thinks I should make.

I can appreciate what you are saying, but I still hold Ontarians responsible for their voting record. Two of my favorite posters on this site are apparently form Ont.(Warwick/Phantom), odiously you cannot paint everyone with the same brush but the lines have been drawn. The way I see it is this:
The people of Ontario are the greatest threat to out way of life in Western Canada.
Joe molnar
I’m with you, I’ve said before (and I’m feeling a little cocky) to the people of Ontario:
I dare you to elect a Liberal majority government and impose a F Alberta/Sask tax.

29. the senate. why?????????????????????????. i have never read or heard any valid argument why it should exist anywhere. the u.s. senate is not needed, the house od lords is not needed and the canadian senate is a waste of toilet paper.

30. Great Britain has the House of “Lards”, we have the house of “Lard Asses”.

31. What’s wrong with a pig roast and beer?
I suggest offended elitists may consider that in the future they will be relating the unpalatable culinary event as a guarded memory to their grandchildren.
Hopefully they will not report you to the local imam on their way to the madrasa, but hey kids will be kids. The whole arrest torture and jizya (poll-tax) thingy may make some keep those memories more private but in the meantime bon appetite!

33. JD is a well known lefty who seems to make a living posting socialist crap on any blog that’ll accept him.
My suspicions are that he’s really posting from some rat hole in Kandahar. It’s better to ignore him.

34. Knight 99: That was a darn good piggy that was roasted last weekend.Never tasted the beer as I prefer vodka-soda—–have to watch the waist ya know.

35.
i have never read or heard any valid argument why it should exist anywhere. the u.s. senate is not needed
Old white Guy.
Without the US senate we would not exist, the Senate makes all States equal regardless of Population… The Senate is more powerful, than the House of Representatives, because bi-partisan “deals” must take place between States.
Why would any State want to be “United” with the large populations of NY or California?
The Senate evens the game and prevents large States from feeding on the small States!

36. The bubble has burst in Ontario economically wise. Soon just having a job will be a big deal. These kind of idiots will have to find new jobs, because the populace will not be able to finance stupidity.
Survival issues will take care of that as socialisms curse catches up with this Province.
There are day’s I figure this Country is finished. To far gone down the Mugabe trail. Now with “Crime Stoppers” issuing hate crime messages its even worse. Our sins are catching up to us.
Harper was the last squirt the West produced to fertilize a Nation gone awry , barren of ideas with statism as its primal goal a collective Monopolistic Nation of mooches. Last hope of any real sanity coming back to Canada. That dream is about dead now as the totalitarian machine seems to be gearing up for a big push to eliminate any vestiges of any rights. Including voting. After all we just care about beer & popcorn in these small minds & as unruly children should be punished for daring to question their betters. PET. with his imps had 40 years to contaminate the institutions of this Country. Now we reap this bitter harvest, while the rats frolic in what’s left of the corn.
That this aristocratic mentality exists with scorn heaped upon cherished ideals by an Eastern establishment sunk in an opium dream. Can only infect the rest of this polity as these HRC’s are doing. This group of so called intelligentsia seems psychotically broken from any awareness of reasonableness, or how the universe works. Least of all people.
When this type of distain for the public has germinated this much it becomes the norm , the game is about over.
Perhaps we ought to think about leaving this creature that was Canada with nobody having a clue what it is today, or what it used to stand for. The thousands that died for ideals now ridiculed if not condemned by our leaders. 800 years of tradition spit on for the gain of insane peoples power ,with of course the riches they believe they deserve for just being “righteous“.
Just my opinion

mmmm mmmm good! It was pork roast for myself tonight – because I could! Delicious, passed on the mid week beer though. Dreamt as I savored my meal of a sustainable renewable energy resource, sandy empty deserts and an end to all dependence on oil imports. A nice evening so far I must say………..

38. Old white guy:
As an electrical engineer who studied control systems theory, I am completely in awe of the US political structure, designed as it was more than 100 years before control systems were even thought about.
The House is elected every two years, and the number of seats in each state is based on population. The House captures the popular sentiment of the times, and is the most volatile of the elected elements.
The Senate elects one third of its members every two years, and each senator serves a six year term. Except in unusual circumstances, each state elects zero or one senators on the two-year cycle. That is, the two senators are rarely elected together; this provides for a gap in sampling the country’s mood, and thus the Senate is a much more conservative (in the sense that it rarely pushes for radical, as opposed to incremental, reform) body than the house.
The President is elected every four years, more or less by popular vote (the peculiarities of the electoral college sometimes change the result, but only when the election is very close to begin with). This samples the entire country for the most powerful post in the land.
From a control system point of view, we have the people who are ostensibly closest to their constituents (the House) sampled most frequently, the President, whose veto power gives him enormous ability to direct legislation, is sampled at half that rate, while the Senate is sampled most slowly – one third of the states have no senate election during House elections.
Three different sampling mechanisms on three different time frames for three different elements of the government – from a control system point of view, that means that system output will generally be better controlled than in a unitary system, such as Great Britain, where all the public is sampled for one body at irregular intervals. After the neutering of the House of Lords, Britain has bounced between hard-right Tories and loopy left Labour. In Canada, the split between federal and provincial powers, and the minority governments have kept us from straying too far in one direction, but once Dion is sent packing, it’s a pretty sure bet the sheeple will once again give the Lieberals a majority – then just wait. Carbon taxes, rises in income taxes and the GST, publicly funded Lieberal indoctrination.. er, daycare centres, etc.
If we had a triple-E senate, we might be spared some of these atrocities. Don’t hold your breath.

39. Having read comments by JD in the past, I am positive that an intelligent comment from this individual will eventually be made although probably by accident. It is inevitable. We all know the story of the monkeys and Shakespeare.
