Al Jazeera is very keen to get into North America. It’s a huge market where they have very little penetration.
So far they have been blocked.
I think their notion is to get access in Canada first, and then try to make inroads into the US from there.
Hiring ex CBC producers and execs is one way they can begin make a case to the CRTC or whoever counts that they are a mainstream “news” provider, not defenders of terrorists.
We need to be prepared for that battle, which will be very political – I can just see the Liberals now, courting the Muslim vote, fighting for “free speech” on behalf of Al Jazeera, though they would happily deny freedom of speech to Canadians.
However, due to evolving Canadian demographics, and also the fact that those who argue most for free speech may have some trouble defending the censoring of out-of-country news channels in a principle manner (“marketplace of ideas” and all that), I believe that Al Jazeera will eventually succeed in penetrating the North American market. It’s just a matter of time.
