Going where no calculator has gone before – correcting the Globe and Mail’s math.

Remember – it’s not anti-Semitic to criticize Israel.
C-10, censorship, Liberal outrage and double standards.
Oh, and by the way? Removing government funding for “provocative” films is not “censorship”. It’s called “grow up and make movies people will pay money to see.”

  2. Seems those who complain about the Librano nanny state have the wrong ones in their crosshairs.
Thi judge who ruled in the motorcycle rider seeking a religious exemption had to dig pretty deep into moral relativism to come up with this gem:
“The raw numbers of deaths, injuries and public dollars are, however, only a part of the story in this situation.
“Behind those numbers rests the devastation, experienced at an individual human level, whenever the avoidable loss of life of a family member occurs.
“Children can be scarred long-term by having a parent suddenly and prematurely taken away from them.
“Spouses are bereaved and can be left economically crippled.
“A parent who buries a child when the death could have been avoided could be emotionally adrift the rest of their lives.”
So fellow Canadians, the judiciary is kind enough to put a nappy on your butt, and talc properly.
Not because it is one’s own free will and choice – but because heath care cost is increased, and most importantly, they are doing it for your family.
Thanks Mr. Orwell for such a useful summary of our modern age.
The @$$hole social engineering judges in this country are the strongest impediment to freedom of the individual in this nation, and the reason why our bloated bureacracies and government intrudes in almost every aspect of our lives.
But, really, it’s ok. See, it is for the children.
This should frighten every reasonable thinking individual in this country on its’ implication.
The state will move upon and coerce you – if it so deems it.

The movie, made by a controversial Dutch politician and due for release any time now, has sparked protests in the Islamic world and concerns in Europe. …-

  4. Another isolated incident from the religion of peace in our precious Trudeaupia…
    —————
An Alliston man was remanded in custody on attempted murder charges yesterday following a knife attack that has left his 14-year-old daughter fighting for her life in hospital.
Kamal Khanna, 44, was reportedly arrested while sitting on the steps of his suburban home on Tuesday morning when police responded to an emergency call at his west-end house.
    […]
Other neighbours speculated that the attack stemmed from a cultural rift between father and daughter because “she didn’t wear what he wanted.”

  5. Islamic propaganda hotline in Toronto? Who’s paying for this?
    —————
Canada’s first helpline for Muslim youth was launched this week, partly in response to the alleged murder of a Mississauga teen by her father in December.
“We had two major events that happened, the Aqsa Parvez tragedy and the Toronto 18,” said co-founder Yaseen Poonah, referring to the arrests of 18 men in June, 2006, on terrorism-related charges.
Based in Mississauga, the Naseeha helpline is staffed weeknights with eight counsellors — divided equally among men and women — between the ages of 18 to 25.
The counsellors are all firstgeneration Muslim Canadians with degrees in psychology or social work and some have worked on other helplines, Mr. Poonah said.
“We’re going to be giving advice based on Islam. We’re living in a society where sex and violence are everywhere, in movies, TV, arts and they’re big influences,” Mr. Poonah said, adding many new Muslims find it hard getting advice in this environment from an Islamic perspective.
Muhammad Ali Jabbar, 23, incoming president of the Ryerson Students’ Union, immigrated to Canada from Pakistan at age 11 and said as a Muslim youth, he faced some challenges in Canada. “There’s gaps between parents and youth and new cultural changes you face. The rules back home are not the same here and that poses a problem,” said Mr. Muhammad. He said youth new to Canada acclimatize to the life here, but parents often don’t, creating divisions and killing off communication between parent and child.
Tarek Fatah, founder of the Muslim Canadian Congress, doesn’t like the helpline, and said the Arabic name — Naseeha, meaning advice — says a lot about it.
“It’s an Islamist agenda, you can tell by the terminology. Where is this place set up? In Toronto or Yemen? Why does this have an Arabic name? Why not have a name in Punjabi?” Mr. Fatah said.
Mr. Fatah said the name belittles Muslims who aren’t from the Middle East, and “is a trap” for Muslim youth into believing an Arab way of life is true Islam.
“It’s a tool used by the Islamists. Their agenda is to let young people know that this is an adversarial society,” Mr. Fatah said. “It’s segregating the youth,” he added.

  6. HB … that judges reasoning is a clear example of the Justice attempting to pander to the sentiments of politically correct morons.
Even though I agree with the decision to enforce the law equally …. your implied argument against the law itself is misdirected.
    These are two issues.
The first is whether such laws should exist. (I agree that they are egregious infringements on the right to personal choice!)
The second is whether anyone who displays such lack of reasoning should be allowed to sit on the bench.
In all matters of law it is the government that is ultimately accountable and if you want to have elected officials who represent your views and concerns then it’s up to you to get them elected.
So at the end of the day it is your failing (and mine) that is at the root of these problems!

  7. “We’ve got most of the MSM working overtime to spin out smear stories that are completely unsupportable by facts….. completely ignoring the concept of verification of facts and source on a daily basis.”
And now comes the story from Dave Rutherford that the PMO staffer actually told reporters Clinton called them…somehow between the discussions and the reporting, CTV turned it into OBAMA…. CTV is in lockdown mode – no one is talking. This from a reporter who was actually in the room and heard Ian Brodie’s comment to reporters.
Oh such fun seeing the whole house of cards that the opposition and the MSM stacked in an effort to discredit the Tories just starting to wobble and weave.

  8. However bizarre it is to imagine millions of radical Muslims threatening, if not commiting murder and destruction over a 15 minute film – it is still going to be interesting:
Brussels, 5 March (AKI) – The European Commission has warned all its offices around the world that the release of an upcoming Dutch film criticising the Koran could spark violent protest by Muslims.
“We have informed our delegations that the film – due for release soon, although we don’t know exactly when – could draw protests,” EU external relations commissioner Benita Ferrero-Waldner’s spokeswoman, Christiane Hohmann, told Adnkronos International (AKI).

CARACAS (Reuters) – Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez said a serious diplomatic crisis with Colombia will mean reduced trade between the two countries and he will consider government takeovers of Colombian companies in Venezuela.
Venezuela will seek goods from other countries to replace products it gets in its $6 billion annual commercial exchange with Colombia, Chavez said.
“We’re going to make a map, ministers, of the Colombian businesses here in Venezuela. We could nationalize some, take them over, we aren’t interested in Colombian investments here,” Chavez said at a joint news conference in Caracas with Ecuador President Rafael Correa.

  12. Thank you kevink, for pointing out that a major concern about C-10 has nothing to do with censorship, it’s economics. I think the stat that you’re looking for is that for every dollar spent by a film or TV shoot, it puts four dollars back into the economy. In Canada, that “every dollar spent” is made up of private and public money, and tax credits. And part of that “four dollars back” returns taxes to the coffers (plus there’s taxes on revenue from international sales of Canadian TV shows; I believe that Canada is the world’s second-largest exporter of television programs.)
Other industries in this country such as mining or forestry or manufacturing have been given — for better or worse — some form of government assistance. Even in the US, many states offer tax credits to film and television productions. The Criminal Code of Canada and the existing rules covering tax credits already disqualify things like porn from accessing tax credits. What C-10 proposes is to lay another layer of bureaucracy onto the process, and likely will scare away a lot of private investment rather than attracting it.
I frankly don’t care if it’s the Liberals, Conservatives, the Greens or Lyndon LaRouche who wants this. It’s a bad idea. If Canadians don’t want tax credits going to film and television production, fine, put it to a vote. But it should be consistent all across the board as far as government support of any industry goes, regardless if it produces jobs, or revenue that more than makes up for what government gave to it.

  13. “Remember – it’s not anti-Semitic to criticize Israel.”
So basically, because some douchbags who are clearly Jew-haters also naturally hate Isreal, anyone who is critical of Israeli policy is also therefore a Jew Hater?

CN RAIL WINS HARD HAT FIGHT
In the 1970s, K.S. Bhinder worked as a maintenance electrician for CN Rail in Toronto. When a rule was introduced in 1978, requiring all employees working in the yard to wear hard hats, Bhinder refused on grounds he could not remove his turban. He was fired as a result. Although a Human Rights Tribunal concluded Bhinder had been discriminated against, the Supreme Court of Canada later ruled that wearing a hard hat on a construction site was a reasonable safety requirement and allowed CN to continue with the requirement…
…Although it has never been an issue for Toronto firefighters, wearing a turban would not be permitted because of the dangers of the job. In such a situation, workplace safety would outweigh religious rights…..

  18. ET is right! Not all Israel criticism is anti-Semitic.
I, for example, am highly critical of Israel’s failure to destroy Hezbollah in S. Lebanon and it’s recent failure to follow-through with the destruction of Hamas in Gaza — retreating after a mere 5 days. The latest debacle is being dubbed by PaliNazis as “The Five Day War”. The greatest danger you can expose your citizenry to is a weak and hesitant response to an existential threat; the use of “proportionate” response which is akin to a boxer pulling punches.
I am totally disgusted with Israel’s lame-brain kowtowing to the legacy-seeking, moronic Dr. Rice who thinks that Dr. Abbas [PhD Moscow, holocaust-denial] is Martin Luther King and a “partner in peace”.

  20. Abe Greenwald, The (Terror-)Friendly Skies
In his book, Bush at War, Bob Woodward describes former CIA Director George Tenet’s initial reaction to the attacks of September 11, 2001 thusly:

“This has bin Laden all over it,” Tenet told Boren. “I’ve got to go.” He also had another reaction, one that raised the real possibility that the CIA and the FBI had not done all that could have been done to prevent the terrorist attack. “I wonder,” Tenet said, “if it has anything to do with this guy taking pilot training.”

Six months after the “guy’s” acquired skills enabled him and eighteen accomplices to kill some 3000 Americans, the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) contacted their flight school to say that the late terrorists had been approved for Visas. At PJM, Annie Jacobson has an unsettling assessment of the developments in U.S. flight school security since 9/11…

Damn fine article. It’s very rare to find a lefty (notice the lack of the term “leftard”) in the media which wasn’t of the type Cohen denounces.
I personally know people like this, but it’s rare as hell in media – especially fringe left publications which pander to leftards. I can already hear the denunciations of Cohan as a traitor an heritic…

  27. Strange, when various members of Chretien’s entourage vilified the US (I hate Americans), or stomped on a ‘doll’ of President Bush on television, the MSM gleefully publicized this behaviour.

  36. hardboiled: Point well taken, but having fat people sign such undertakings would be problematic in that there’s no certain scientific connection between fat and disease nor a necessarily definitive connection between behaviour and fatness. Genetic issues, ec. Moreoever, you would be giving HUGE power to government proxies to make what would be essentially arbitrary decisions.
Whereas, the connection between the head injury and the lack of a helmet would be pretty clear cut.
