Oh, and by the way? Removing government funding for “provocative” films is not “censorship”. It’s called “grow up and make movies people will pay money to see.”

  1. Oh, thank God you said that Kate. It’s been driving me nuts. It’s not censorship.
If you can find the funding for your trash, go ahead and make it, no one is stopping you from making any film. THAT would be censorship. All C10 is proposing is that the TAXPAYER doesn’t fund it through tax credits. If ya want a government handout (which should be stopped altogether, but thats another story) then don’t make it so ‘provocotive’.

  2. My apologies if this is old news by now, or if it’s been posted at National Newswatch or Bourque, but the results of the the first bout between Jem Mace and Tom Allen, aka the Section 13 Supporter, have now been reported. Highlights:
Round one. The game opened with two or three minutes of cautious sparring, neither being inclined to let out. Then Mace got in a stinger on Allen’s left eye, which flushed at the insult. Jem nimbly jumped away from a wicked counter to the mid-rib, then danced back laughing and countered catching Allen with a rather heavy hit on his nose…
    (…)
“Round three. More cautious sparring and feinting, both men still inviting attack. Allen made an ugly attempt to catch Jem on the left ear, but the old master ducked, and Tom’s pulverizer glanced harmlessly of Jem’s neck. Attempting a sharp retort, Mace slipped and stretched his iron frame on mother earth.
    (…)
“Round Seven. Allen came up with both his observatories in a bad way; the right was closed for repairs and the left gradually shutting off daylight. Mace’s face was clear and bright, although he glowered occasionally as though Tom had damaged his bellows…Finally Mace saw his opening, landed heavily on Tom’s breast-plate, took his return to the ribs without a flinch and sent another smack on Tom’s fluid valve, which made him to for Jem with a wild rush…”

  3. Those questionable crappy films probably only get shown on CBC. So they are getting taxpayer $$ twice, first for the funding to make the crap, then CBC pays to show it.
If these “artists” believe in their product so much, they should have no problem finding private backers to make their trash. Let the granola munching crowd pay for it themselves.

  4. To Understand AGW you have to follow the money:

Some of the background provided here will be known to many of you (e.g. Maurice Strong’s involvement in the U.N. environment initiatives), but this article provides many additional revealing links about the power figures and the money that is driving the global warming scam.

  5. “grow up and make movies people will pay money to see.”
Exactly. If you want to see the worst of dreck paid for by (Liberal era) tax dollars, you simply MUST SEE ‘Bubbles Galore’ produced and starring Nina Hartley, the aging U.S. porn star.
One of the worst ‘movies’ ever made, anywhere, anytime. It didn’t even qualify as watchable porn, let alone anything of socially redeeming value.
Hmmm. U.S. porn actress paid to make crap by Canadian taxpayers. How does that work? Even under the Lieberals?

  6. The government should not be funding any films nor a whole lot of other things outside its mandate.

  7. Once again, right wingers are redefining the meaning of words to suit their agenda. When the government gets to decide what kind of films get made by controlling which film gets a tax credit and which film doesn’t, that’s CENSORSHIP.

  8. Most outlandish conspiracy theory ever!
I overheard the following (much abridged, and cleaned up for family viewing) at a coffee shop this morning. The speaker, holding forth at some volume, did not seem to possess more than one degree from an institute (and not necessarily one of higher learning!) and proclaimed it thusly:
Hillary will fight hard until about a week before the Penn primary, when she will suddenly announce an alliance with Obama on a “unity” ticket, with HRC as VP.
Obama accepts the nomination at the DNC, everyone is sweetness and light. Bill accepts Barack as the son he never had, and promises to work hard to get him elected.
Now, this is where it gets weird (and the easily offended might wish to stop reading here). At this point, frothing slightly more than a cappuccino machine at full blast, the orator insists that HRC’s long range plan is to get Obama out on the campaign trail in the certainty that somewhere, sometime, someone who won’t accept a n.. er, African-American (his original words, not mine!) as president will put a bullet in him. HRC rises to top of the ticket, and on a wave of sympathy, rides back to the White House.
At this point, he degenerated into various examples such as Vince Foster, Whitewater, Rose Law firm, etc. in reducing degrees of coherency. Not being equipped as Atticus Finch in “To Kill A Mockingbird” to deal with a rabid dog, I left.
What did surprise me was that his audience of 2 men and a woman sat there raptly, apparently enjoying every word of his screed.

Sorry, Iberia… but it isn’t censorship. It’s no different to governments deciding that some operations are covered by medical coverage, while others are not. It is you who is redefining the word “censorship”. If you as a dedicated lefty want to see censorship, spend 6 months in your favourite communist country and try making a film critical of the government… Good luck.

  10. Here’s the Summary for Policymakers by the Nongovernmental International Panel on Climate Change (NIPCC) that was released at the 2008 International Conference on Global Climate Change. It’s a great one-document demolition of the IPCC and AGW:

That link is to the abstract. The direct link to the 50-page pdf is:

The correlation between proxies for solar magnetic cycles and cosmic ray flux as measured in a stalagmite from a cave in Oman(!), coupled with experimental proof that cosmic ray flux is proportional to cloud formation blows away the poor correlations between CO2 and surface temperatures.

  11. Agreed with your statement re. not funding obscene, offensive “films” with tax dollars.
If people want to make movies that others may find offensive, then they must pay for them out of their own pocket.
I remember when the Liberals financed a male-bashing-propaganda lesbo-porno flick called “Bubbles”. Never again on my dime!

  12. “Oh, thank God you said that Kate. It’s been driving me nuts. It’s not censorship.”
But it _IS_ censorship! The government hasn’t funded a single one of my photographs thereby forcing me to work for a living. My art is being suppressed and Canadians are being denied the clarity of my vision!
    *sob*

  13. lberia, witholding tax credits is not censorship, it is good stewardship.
Take as an example our dear host, Kate, here at SDA. She allows comments from leftists idiots such as yourself (analogous to providing tax credits to your production…she’s paying for this blog, remember) but she draws the line at overtly racist or vulgar or other heinous comments, be they left or right oriented (analogous to witholding tax credits for their inappropriate production).
Kate is not censoring because the idiots can still produce and distribute their bile on the Internet…she is moderating the production being paid for by her. This makes Kate (and by extension, the Conservative government) a good steward of the public’s money.
Your attempt at denigration was weak. Try harder (actually, please don’t).
As for redefining words, it is the left that redefines words, not the right: progressive; tolerance; marriage; racism; life; etc.

  14. lberia: “When the government gets to decide what kind of films get made by controlling which film gets a tax credit and which film doesn’t, that’s CENSORSHIP.”
As per usual, the L/libs aren’t able to discern the difference between governance and censorship.
Governments every day make decisions about what our society will live with or without: it’s called democracy. So, whether it’s decisions about funding for health care, highways and transportation, the military, or the film industry, they’re all legitimately on the table for review.
Why should Canadian taxpayers fund smut that doesn’t return ANYTHING to the electorate: neither a profit nor enlightenment.
The great irony about these X-rated films, is that they never make much money. The films that really rake in the bucks are family fare, like The Sound of Music, Beauty and the Beast, etc. Michael Medved pointed this out in a book he wrote a number of years ago. Even though you’d think making money would be a consideration when making a movie, apparently these porn purveyors don’t seem to care.
The only reason so many dubious “films” get made is that their makers like to think they’re on the cutting edge, that they’re being daring.
Well, there’s nothing daring about having your movie underwritten by the Canadian taxpayer, and, as per usual with the Libs and Dippers, we end up being suckered.

  15. I’m stuck in the filter! ‘Certain words, I can’t repeat (no profanity, of course), must be thre reason…!!

  16. Stephane Dion to lead Liberals in condemning opposition parties who oppose
Stephane Dion and the Liberals continue to chart new territory when it comes to absurdity. I thought they had reached a pinnacle when Stephane Dion declared that he would find a way to make sure the Conservative government did not fall.
But that was just a warm up. Now the Liberals are putting forth a motion of non-confidence…in the other opposition parties.
    Huh?
In particular, the motion condemns the NDP and the Bloc Quebecois for bringing down the Paul Martin government in November 2005. As a result of giving Canadians the chance to vote, the Conservatives won.
The democratic result was a huge mistake, or so suggests the Liberal motion.
Condemning democracy? Or just condemning other opposition parties for having acted like opposition parties?
Is the Liberal Party going to buy this line, or will the caucus tell Stephane Dion publicly condemning opposition parties for opposing is going too far? …-

  17. lberia, I agree with those who question your weasel definition of “censorship”.
What’s happening here is called “discernment”, a word not found in the L(l)iberal lexicon. Perhaps you’d like to add it, though I don’t imagine this virtue is one L(l)iberals will be exercising any time soon.

  18. The Liberal media’s attempt to find a scandal that they can directly attribute to Harper is getting ridiculous.
Apparently the Globe is finding scandal in obscure offhand comments, regarding the Obama claim.
Dion doesn’t have the dollars to advertise attacks, so the media are dutifully picking up the slack.

  19. Re: C-10.
True, it’s not censorship. The critics’ fears are unwarranted.
But from a closer reading of the article, it seems that the critics in the story aren’t the Liberals so much as the Bloc and television/film industry players. The Libs are in defense mode, not outrage mode.

  20. Had Alberta switched to a proportional representation electoral system, the Wildrose Alliance Party, which ran on a platform that included:
    * minimal taxes
    * smaller, efficient government
    * free market economics
    * reclaiming provincial responsibilities from Ottawa
    * and “innovative” methods of healthcare delivery
would have received about 6 seats in the Alberta Legislature. Instead, they have none.
I wonder what those SDA readers of a more libertarian bent think about the PR system.

  21. Hey lberia, the other night I was surfing channels and cane across a Canadian show, don’t know what is was. A guy was giving a BJ to a cucumber. If I’m funding this kind of shit then no thanks. And if you are in favor of this then you are just plain SICK.

  22. Good column by Lorrie Goldstein today re Alta.election and the media’s mistaken predictions.Column was inspired by comment at SDA !!Nice to see mention of SDA in msm.

  23. Has anyone wondered about the possibility the Martin Liberals may have “inadvertently” made an “offer” to Mr. Cadman for his crucial vote?
All the while they’re trying to tarnish the Conservatives they’re tarnishing Mr. Cadman as a man who would take a bribe. Not accepting what he said on video tape that there were no offers is also calling him a liar.
All we keep hearing is “someone ” made an offer, the amount of a million dollars is being tossed around by the accusing Liberals. We have no idea who, when or where.
Never mind the fact that no insurance company would give a policy to a dying person. Those details escape the befuddled minds of the desperate Liberals.
The madness continues to be played out in the Liberal den of desperation.

  24. Society of Professional Journalists Advocates Whitewashing Islam
If you’ve wondered why so many mainstream media stories about Islamic issues omit important details and draw spurious morally equivalent conclusions, wonder no more. They’re doing it on purpose.
This was apparently released by the Society of Professional Journalists shortly after the 9/11 attacks: Guidelines for Countering Racial, Ethnic and Religious Profiling.
On Oct. 6 at its National Convention in Seattle, the Society of Professional Journalists passed a resolution urging members and fellow journalists to take steps against racial profiling in their coverage of the war on terrorism and to reaffirm their commitment to:
    — Use language that is informative and not inflammatory;
    — Portray Muslims, Arabs and Middle Eastern and South Asian Americans in the richness of their diverse experiences;
    — Seek truth through a variety of voices and perspectives that help audiences understand the complexities of the events in Pennsylvania, New York City and Washington, D.C.
    Guidelines
    Visual images
    — Seek out people from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds when photographing Americans mourning those lost in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
    — Seek out people from a variety of ethnic and religious backgrounds when photographing rescue and other public service workers and military personnel.
    — Do not represent Arab Americans and Muslims as monolithic groups. Avoid conveying the impression that all Arab Americans and Muslims wear traditional clothing. …-

  25. If Obama said he would cancel/rewrite NAFTA, which he did, and if that is not his intention, don’t the american voters need to know that he was lying.
Why are the liberals and NDP so upset that Obama has been caught in a lie, but continue to go after PMSH for supposedly lying.
And why are the NDP and liberals so concerned about US/Canada relations when they have spent the past several years complaining about blasting the Bush government.
What would the results have been in the election where Chretain said he would get rid of the GST, but had no intention of doing so. Had the voters known that, would he have won.
Watching Obama squirm over this is rather interesting. The press seem to have taken off their rose colored classes and are asking, is this man strong and honest enough to be POTUS.
The american voter, and especially union member, should be thanking Canada.

  26. The Libs recent non-voting ‘strategy’ referred to as “Abstainistan” on another blog..thot it was cute, and appropriate.

  27. dj, I’m sure that WAS lberia giving a BJ to a cucumber. After all, it’s just him, the internet and a camcorder in his mother’s basement.

  28. lberia, you wrote:
“Once again, right wingers are redefining the meaning of words to suit their agenda. When the government gets to decide what kind of films get made by controlling which film gets a tax credit and which film doesn’t, that’s CENSORSHIP.”
No, you are the one who is redefining the meaning of words. The government isn’t deciding which kinds of films get made; if you can get private funding for your film – go ahead. The question becomes one of categorization of which films the taxpayer will contribute to for their production.
I’m against the taxpayer funding ANY films; why should we fund something that we don’t want, that can’t find its own funding, that no-one wants to pay to fund or see?
As pointed out, IF funding is available, then there must be a set of standards for evaluation. Just as there are for funding research, for funding medical services, etc. It’s called ‘criteria for evaluation’ and if you think that your tax dollars should be handed out without any evaluation and accountability….
With regard to criticism of Israel, no, it is not anti-semitic to criticize Israel – even with anti-semitic cartoons. Israel is a political entity and therefore, open to criticism.
If its political policies refer to the Jewish religion, then, criticizing those policies is not anti-semitic. Just as it is not ‘Islamophobic’ to criticize Saudi Arabia nor to criticize its policies that refer to Islamic Sharia Law.

  29. I don’t think the Conservatives went far enough.
How about censorship of bad ideas? How about being more critical about what gets funding and what doesn’t?
Rick Mercer shouldn’t get funding. He is not funny. Corner gas sucks. Everything on the CBC blows. None of this trash would exist based on consumer demand.
Are Canadians capable of producing better ideas? Well, yes. How many great films and how much great music has been created by Canadians when the bar isn’t held so low that you trip over it?
How much of the current taxpayer funding is controlled by absolute hacks with connections and an agenda? Is this not theft?
Funding is for stunted socialist retards. Take it all away and the ideas will be better. Take, for example, the CBC – based solely on the quality of its content, it would not exist without funding. The product is pushed, never pulled.
It has no right to exist.

  30. Could there be another lawsuit in the works?
CBC news just said the the PM’s top advisor is the source for the Obama leak. CBC says that during a news briefing the PM’s top advisor told the assembled reporters that he heard from the Clinton campain that Obama wasn’t serious about NAFTA. The report then went on to say that CTV then received the leaked diplomatic dispatch although CTV said that it would not reveal the source of the document.
I wonder if CBC listens to its own story and is capable of seeing the lie it just told to satisfy its get Harper agenda.

  31. Correction: rather than setting the bar higher, no funding at all.
As proof, the only great films and music produced by Canadians had no government funding. A government has no business in creating rackets for untalented and lazy socialists and their propoganda.

  32. The left has a deep sense of entitlement to taxpayer money to pay for their ‘work’ in their self-defined role as our Philosopher-Kings vs we peasants in the fields.
Since their work is, in their view, beyond the comprehension of we peasant taxpayers (beer and popcorn), then expecting that work to survive on the basis of the peasant-taxpayer actually paying to see the films/art – is unacceptable.
With regard to the Liberals and ‘Mulroney-Schreiber’ and ‘Cadman’ and ‘Obama’ – I suggest this is a backroom strategy of the Liberals to dredge up, find, and actually create ‘scandals’ about the Conservatives. The MSM, aligned with this party, is a willing agent.
The Liberals have no policies. They have no money. They have nothing. Their only agenda is Power, and when in Power, their agenda is to remain in power by using taxpayer money to buy votes.
Their current agenda is to denigrate the Conservatives, divert attention from the good work being done by the govt – to build up hostility to the CPC.
They have moved on from their previous strategy of focusing only on Harper (scary, hidden agenda) because it can’t be substantiated, to one that involves the whole CPC.
That’s The Liberal Way – they are consistent. Their strategy is – buy their way in power, and smear their way into power.

  34. Part of the problem with C10 is that the tax credit will be taken away after the production is complete so it will put a chill on investment of any sort. Why would anyone invest in a project that may have the benefit removed after the fact. There is also the issue of the jobs that are generated by the industry. I have not seen recent stats, but I remember hearing that the return on the investment was quite high at one time with the resulting income tax and economic spinoffs of these tax credits. If you have ever seen a TV or movie production you know that a large number of people are involved.
We live in a world where all types of industry receives some sort of subsidy/ tax credit/ gavernment assistance. Be careful what you wish for when you say all art should be self sufficient as the same argument may be made for your sector one day.
The rules are clear – no porn is already one of them. A percieved bad decision on “Bubbles Galore” should not result in another bad decision.

  35. Politically Correct Dictionary: its double plus good
    A
Action – by adding “action” to plan or an organization name we must be doing something. [am I?]
Agenda – describes any collection of policies: ‘equality agenda’ for instance. Invariably needs to be ‘taken forward’.
Aggressive outreach – the process of actively soliciting trade for social workers. Generally employed when ‘customers’ fail to show required enthusiasm for services on offer.
Alarmist – raising a subject lefties don’t want to talk about. Usually in regard to the abject failure of one of their policies like immigration, death penalty. Because no matter how bad the “youth” rioting gets you should not actually talk about it. Personified in Mark Steyn.
Algorerythyms – The ability to turn a 5 inch more than normal sea level rise into 20 feet in spite of all evidence to the contrary, caused by keeping the AC turned too low and paying 30,000 a year like he does.
    B
BCE Battling Christianity everywhere. Used to be BC or AD but the minority who dictate what is allowed in our democracy and who hate Christianity virulently will not even give credit to the religion that named it to be 2007 in the year of our lord. That’s a Christian lord, but secular types who might one day start charities rivaling the evil Christians are oblivious.
Beacon of excellence – archaism: any organ of state that achieved – or ‘delivered’ – what it was supposed to, or any lefty who needs a pat on the back for all the taxes they had to spend.
Best practice – normally ‘established’ when a Lefty wants to saddle a process with more complexity. Replaces ‘working it out yourself’.
    http://marginalizedactiondinosaur.net/?p=432

  36. I’m wondering about the agenda of the Liberals.
I think that the current Liberal strategy of a Return to Power is to find, create, set up – whatever – a scenario about the CPC and Harper as ‘corrupt’. The fact that it isn’t, is not relevant. They have the MSM as their front line army and their strategy is pure propaganda and manipulation of the public.
They have no money; they can’t put out ads like the CPC of ‘Dion is not a leader’. So, as usual, they use someone else’s money. The taxpayer funded CBC and their buddies in the MSM – Duffy, Newman, CTC, Jane Taber, Gloria Galloway, etc etc.
Their agenda is to smear, besmirch, befoul, the CPC and Harper. Again, facts and truth are totally irrelevant. Their agenda is pure propaganda. Via the MSM.
So- they’ve tried with Mulroney-Schreiber. Their agenda was to link Schreiber/Mulroney to Harper. When this failed, they lost interest.
Harper’s response to their strategy was to move it out of their hands and into an official inquiry. The Liberals aren’t interested in this. Their basic agenda is not the truth but a deliberate campaign of foul propaganda.
Then, they’ve moved into Cadman. That’s yet another campaign, based on hearsay, misinformation and speculation. To befoul Harper and the CPC. Harper’s response – to move it out of the hands of Liberal manipulation and propaganda and into an official inquiry – a libel suit in court. The Liberals aren’t interested in such an inquiry.
Now, they’re into ‘Obama’. The same agenda – befoul Harper. Harper’s immediate response; again, move it out of the Liberal hands of manipulation and propaganda – move it into an official inquiry.
What’s next? The Liberal strategy is clear. Find, create and set up situations that can be used, via the MSM and blatant misinformation and lies, to denigrate the CPC and Harper.
The Liberals have no policies to put to Canadians, no arguments about ‘what’s best for Canada’. They don’t operate as an Opposition Party, critiquing the govt. When they do operate as an Opposition, it’s fallacious, it’s a mechanical rather than intelligent reaction.
The Opposition’s duty is not to mechanically oppose everything but to critique it. That means that sometimes you approve, sometimes you don’t approve. The Liberals instead either mechanically oppose or don’t show up. They never critique and analyze.
So, the Liberals, in their sole agenda of Power, have moved into a strategy of total propaganda. Find or create scenarios where you can imply and set up a situation defining the CPC and Harper as ‘corrupt’. Exploit it in screaming fits with your friends in the MSM. There’s no interest in truth, no interest in facts. It’s pure and total propaganda. And doesn’t cost them anything; via their buddies in the CBC, CTV and the rest of the MSM.
    That’s the Liberal Way.

  37. Joan Smith, ‘Honour’ killings are an outrage we must confront
It’s a startling statistic: in one British city alone, 33 children under the age of 16 are missing from school rolls. Officials in Bradford have not been able to establish what has happened to them, and there are fears that some may have become victims of forced marriage.
Two days ago the children’s minister, Kevin Brennan, revealed the figure to the Home Affairs select committee and said that the Government also has concerns about 14 areas of the country which are suspected of having high levels of so-called “honour” crimes…

The BBC news gave pride of place this morning to a report by ‘aid’ and ‘human rights’ agencies —Oxfam, Amnesty, Care International — which accused Israel of causing the worst humanitarian crisis in Gaza for the past forty years.
This is of course such a twisted conclusion as to be positively pathological…
Dr. Avishag Gordon, Sderot Rocketing: A Classical Case of Asymmetric War
Sderot and the surrounding areas became the target of Kassam rockets fired from the Gaza Strip by the HAMAS and other extreme factions of the Palestinians almost daily since the year 2000. The statistics show that during this time, more than seven years, a total of 2,383 rockets were fired at the civilian population of this city, of which number 45% landed in inhabited areas (HCC report, December 2007).

  39. Nazar Janabi, Who Represents the Iraqi Sunnis?
Since the fall of Saddam Hussein, Sunnis in Anbar and other western Iraqi provinces have struggled to develop a coherent and representative political leadership. The recently formed Iraqi Awakening Convention (IAC) — a collective of so-called “Awakening council” leaders — could represent the next step in that evolution and, if nurtured, make a significant contribution to broader political reconciliation. It will also mean, however, that current elected leaders will have to give way to new local leaders or compete politically with them, since it is pointless to compete violently given the asymmetry of the current power balance…

  42. Is it just me or are the lefty trolls getting proportionally more insane as each day passes?
We’ve got most of the MSM working overtime to spin out smear stories that are completely unsupportable by facts….. completely ignoring the concept of verification of facts and source on a daily basis.
We’ve go the LIEberal Party jumping on every single fantastic confabulation that comes to them (from the MSM mostly) …. the mainstream anti – conservatives are increasingly desperate and losing all sense of reality are the already demented lefty blog trolls who require those sources to anchor their delusions going to fall completely off the edge of the tangible world?
They do seem to be the canaries in the coal mine when it comes to waves of mass hysteria.
