It is indeed a reminder of the true meaning of the season. I am struck by how ‘political correctness’ has changed the face of our culture – none of his message would be allowed to be spoken aloud in 2007 – what a shame…

    Dear Editor-
    I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no
    Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell
    me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

    Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the
    scepticism of a sceptical age. They do not believe except they see. They
    think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little
    minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are
    little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in
    his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as
    measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and
    knowledge.
    Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love
    and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and
    give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be
    the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if
    there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no
    poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no
    enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which
    childhood fills the world would be extinguished.
    Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies.
    You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on
    Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa
    Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but
    that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in
    the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever
    see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that
    they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there
    are unseen and unseeable in the world.
    You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside,
    but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest
    man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever
    lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push
    aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory
    beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing
    else real and abiding.
    No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years
    from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue
    to make glad the heart of childhood.

    Merry Christmas to everybody here,and may we all find just a little piece of a childs joy in this season, and carry it with us forever.

  23. I have just returned from an early morning walk in Fish Creek Park – a protected old growth forested area that runs along a creek in south Calgary – and it is a humbling experience.
    The sky was brilliant blue, the sun just coming up in the midst of huge old-growth fir trees, while 80 miles away the snow-capped Rocky Mountains glistened majestically.
    This was not the creation of mankind nor was it created using some sophisticated computer model. One can only hope that we mortals have the smarts to preserve that with what we have been blessed.

  27. Presents opened, paper strewn, ran out of batteries, made-in-China toy wouldn’t work, kids bored in two hours. But, hey! That’s Christmas.
    No, not really. In reality, Christmas is Love, Peace, Joy, and most importantly Giving. It is from Giving that we find Love, Peace and Joy, for it is then that we emulate the One whose birth we celebrate today.
    May you all have a blessed Christmas and carry the blessings into the New Year.

    And many blessings to the SDA family, especially Kate, who makes all this possible for us. As Christopher Lasch wrote about the biological family (fast being deconstructed in our Brave New World), SDA provides for many of us “a haven in a heartless world”.

    I also read Omar Bakri sad ranting. we must try and give him this message not that he would ever understand it. I fear he is many incarnations from enlightenment. Like all middle eastern types he is in the back of the herd screaming jihad lots of room up front. Peace to all even the misguided

It is comments like Bernie’s above that keep me coming back.And that other stuff too,such as; I watched the ‘converssation with the PM’ tonight and I am pretty damn sure that one of the questions about the enviroment was not only seeded (shocking) but that it was the same question and woman from last year’s conversation.So I went to ctv’s website and tried to check it out. Unfortunately,though I could find last year’s show I was unable to play the video. It’s there,just not working. Anyone else think the same?

    (If you’re interested, I got a ‘lump of coal’ in the form of a chair for Christmas. It was badly needed, and I had asked for it. I’m sitting on it now.)

    I was most impressed by the lack of partisanship: no preening, “The I/CPC did/will do this and this.” No, just a short, straightforward message of best wishes to Canadians, while unashamedly referring to our history and our founding faith(s).
    Stephen Harper’s a class act, if ever there was one.
