“”Christmas fervor is prompting more communities this year to buck secular efforts to take down Christmas trees or nativity scenes….
More and more people are feeling empowered” to protest the absence of Christian symbols, says Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League. He says more than 95 percent of Americans celebrate Christmas.
Among the flash points:
# Green Bay Mayor Jim Schmitt cast a tie-breaking vote in the City Council on Wednesday to keep a nativity scene along with a Santa Claus, reindeer and two Christmas trees on the roof of City Hall. The council put on hold requests for other symbols, including a pole for Festivus, a holiday popularized by TV’s “Seinfeld.”
The Wisconsin Assembly voted to rename the Capitol’s balsam fir a “Christmas” tree. It became a “holiday” tree in 1985. The state Senate has not voted.
# In Fort Collins, Colo., the City Council rejected a task force’s suggestion that decorations be secular only.
# In Columbiana, Ala., Mayor Allan Lowe countered a complaint about the city’s nativity scene with a policy allowing seasonal displays on public property.
# In Hyde Park, N.Y., a Jewish group rescinded its request to remove a nativity scene after residents complained, says Pompey Delafield, a city supervisor.””

The sophistry over at the Canadian progressives blog about how the secular left is NOT out to destroy Christian tradition, put me on a very brief Google search before I found several articles about different local governments being sued or threatened for displaying Christmas symbolism. This one shows that the militant atheists are using extremist secularism to justify NGOs like this “Freedom From Religion Foundation”
Let’s look at it a tad closer shall we: http://ffrf.org/

When I was a member of Greenpeace in the 1980s I received a request for money supported by the claim that about 30,000 species each year were becoming extinct. Until then I’d been an unsceptical environmentalist, but this sounded like an awful lot, so I called Greenpeace to ask how they knew. I made several queries but they didn’t seem very interested. Finally they told me they didn’t know where the figure came from, and I resigned from the organisation.
I later found the figure almost certainly came from the work of the biologist Edward Wilson, originally an expert on ants. […]
Based on this and his invention of the concept of “biodiversity”, he later announced the world was experiencing “one of the great extinction spasms of geological history” and losing up to 100,000 species a year. Wilson’s claims are one of the mainstays of the modern environmental movement, and a foundation of government environmental policies around the globe.
This experience with Greenpeace gave me a long-running interest in the way much environmental science involves mathematical formulas or computer models. The most famous recent examples of these are the “general circulation models” used to produce predictions of future climatic conditions. …- http://tinyurl.com/2b5zaf
In Stephen Harper’s end of year interviews, he has commented how Canadians should prepare for more greenhouse gas regulation.
An interesting article appeared showing how China’s growth in emissions will be greater than other industrial nations total emissions. Check out the graph.
“The growth in China’s emissions from 2006-2010 is equivalent to adding the 2004 emissions of Japan, Germany, United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia to China’s 2006 total (source). The emissions growth in China at these rates is like adding another Germany every year, or a UK and Australia together, to global emissions.” http://sciencepolicy.colorado.edu/prometheus/archives/climate_change/001295chinas_growing_emis.html

(Via Israpundit) Amil Imani, Never Mind the Bomb, Beware of Islamofascism
The National Intelligence Estimate regarding Iranās bomb project has stirred a great deal of controversy. Some say that there is now reason to abandon the war posturing and start negotiating a live-and-let-live deal with the Mullahs, since they have āabandonedā their quest for the bomb. At least that is what the not-so-reliable report seems to imply. Others, with good reason, remain skeptical of both the validity of the report and the ever-cheating, conniving Mullahs.
This controversy aside, the irrefutable fact is that the Jihadist belief of Islam itself poses existential danger to the world. Beliefs energize and direct actions. Beliefs are as indispensable as the air we breathe. Even an atheist is a believer, with his own system of disbelief. Not believing in anything is mental breakdown. There is something about humans that demands a belief. A belief can be anything or a combination of many things; it can be well-defined and even rigid, or a loosely put together hodge-podge with considerable latitude. It can be magnificent or the most abhorrent. But, it has to be there. Beliefs steer our vehicles in the journey of life….
The handwriting is on the wall. Huge numbers of Muslims, overwhelmingly poor, under-educated, and deeply indoctrinated in the jihadist belief are invading the world. It is this human bomb that must be diffused as well as keeping a vigilant eye on the other one that Iranās Mullahs are relentlessly pursuing.
In short, never mind the nuclear bomb, if you like. But, we must do all we can to erase the suicide-homicide belief-vest that Islamofascists straps on their masses of the poor, the undereducated, and their deluded followers….

Muslim telemarketer fired due to “incompetence”. Oddly, she was too timid to actually do her job, but was not timid enough to avoid launching a Human Rights Complaint.
I suspect it’s a setup, to see how far employers can be pushed, and test the limits of the law. Like that teacher in England who showed up to the job training dressed normally, then showed up to work in a head to toe outfit. She then launched a human right complaint when she was told she could not teach little children when covered from head to toe in black.
Turned out she was part of a family and social group of pretty aggressive radicals. Obviously a plant job.
Incrementalism. It’s a strategy that has worked so far for them.
A reminder that tomorrow the annual NORAD Santa Tracking site is open for kids. They’ve been tracking Santa since 1955, bless them.
From wikipedia:
In 1955, a Colorado Springs-based Sears store ran an advertisement encouraging children to call Santa Claus on a special telephone hotline. Due to a printing error, the phone number that was printed was the hotline for the Director of Operations at the Continental Air Defense (CONAD). Colonel Harry Shoup took the first Santa call on Christmas Eve of 1955 from a six-year old boy who began reciting his Christmas list. Shoup didn’t find the call funny, but after asking the mother of the second caller what was happening, then realizing the mistake that occurred, he instructed his staff to give Santa’s position to any child who called in[1].
For those who claim that Christmas and all it’s decorations, and holiday making and good spirits, and love and good will: We’ll expect you to be turning up for work on Christmas and Boxing Day. It will be a regular work day with no additional pay for working the statutory holiday you claim we shouldn’t celebrate.
Have fun all by yourselves.
The rest of us will be celebrating Christmas just as it should be celebrated.
Thank you and Merry Christmas to all SDA readers.
Mike In White Rock
Bang on Mike in White Rock. You want to hear the PC crowd piss and moan, just take away their stat holidays for Christmas and Boxing Day. You’d see alot of that crowd suddenly seeing the light. I wish there was a way it could be done.
Thanks, Mike.
Yes, perhaps it’s time to dismantle the Christian holidays, for everyone, on the public dime.
All employees, whether Christian or not, whether respectful of Christianity or not, get generous time off work, tied to the Christian holy days.
Guess what, non Christians are also allowedāon the public dimeātheir own holy days off. I really respect those of other religions who take their holy days seriously, so, yes, I have no problem with them ādouble dippingā, so to speak.
But for those who attack our Christian foundations, while enjoying all the fruits, let them forfeit all days off attached to our Christian heritage: no Christmas and Boxing Day, with lots of travel days attached, no Good Friday or Easter Monday.
Hmm . . . Maybe Iāll take off next Ash Wednesday . . .

I just read the article above in this yesterday’s Saskatoon StarPhoenix about the mother dissatisfied with her Christmas hamper. I contacted the Salvation Army and received a prompt reply with pertinent information that was not included in the article.
Having been the recipient of one of those hampers in 1990 I know what an impact that act of generosity and compassion of others had on my family. To be honest with you, I cannot recall if it contained a turkey or not. I just know that we said grace over the last of our groceries the night before the hamper had arrived. We had not asked for it and to this day we do not know who gave the Salivation Army our name. We were overwhelmed. As I think back on the moment that the delivery person came through our door it still chokes me up.
I am absolutely disgusted at the selfish, self-centred, arrogant (need I go on) attitude of anyone who would complain about a gift such as was provided from the hearts of caring students. There comes a time when you have to stand up and say, “Be thankful, the students did not have to give anything at all!” The old saying, “Never look a gift horse in the mouth”, is the only thing Karen Morin should have heard.
My family, by the way, is having ham for our traditional Christmas meal this year and there are things I want for Christmas too but won’t get because I cannot afford them anymore than Karen can.
Other interesting things: Follow the links to the list of items included in the hamper http://cjunk.blogspot.com/2007/12/gringetta-in-saskatoon.html, Karen’s Facebook discussion board http://www.facebook.com/board.php?uid=2244236603, and it could be her name listed as an staff of the FSIN http://www.fsin.com/downloads/FSINStaffList.pdf.
Part of the response from the Salvation Army included: “She was obviously expecting food for a traditional Christmas turkey
dinner, as she had in the past, and didn’t get it. What the article did not say was that I thought the students did a great job with compiling the
hamper, and that Ms. Morin could have taken the $ 42.00 in cash, and purchased the turkey and all the trimmings for a traditional meal, had she
chosen to do so. The current situation with Ms. Morin is that no matter what we do, we will
not please her. Initially she was open to receiving a ‘traditional hamper’, however things have quickly changed. On her ‘blog’ her comments
are anything but kind to The Salvation Army: she’s making some incredibly unsavory and insulting comments about us, and becoming very personal in her attack on our people.
Kate,
a very merry Christmas to you.
And thank you for another wonderful year of blogging.
Merry Christmas to all!
I hope that lady has her name removed from every food bank, SA, and any other places that distribute goods at Christmas time.
I remember years ago, when I was about 4, and my father opening the door and there was Santa in all his glory with a food hamper and dolls for my sister and I.
A few years ago, a local Church had their annual party, with Santa and gifts. About 10 p.m. I heard bells ringing and then the doorbell. The Santa had made a side trip on his way home and visited our granson, with a gift. People do nice things for others and we should be grateful.
That Church’s annual food drive is the only one I donate to.
“I know there’s a popularly expressed view that immigrants come here and they should change to suit the country. I think they overwhelmingly do. The Bias In What Gets Left Out
Pew Research Center issued a stinging indictment on Wednesday regarding the press coverage of Iraq this year, one that shows a subtle but clear editorial bias. The news media gave plenty of attention to the war in Iraq when they could show it as a failing enterprise, with half of all their coverage focusing on anecdotal stories of violence. When the success of General David Petraeus made even that coverage difficult, media outlets simply stopped reporting on Iraq (via Wake Up America): […]
Editorial bias comes in several guises. Stories written with a particular slant only comprise a part of how news gets manipulated for political agendas. The most insidious form is when media outlets simply don’t report on stories at all.
That has become apparent with Iraq. As the violence receded, one might have expected journalists to have more flexibility in reporting from the communities rather than from the understandable impulse to remain secure in the Green Zone. Instead, most did neither. …- http://www.captainsquartersblog.com/mt/archives/016410.php

1914 Christmas truce `planned by thousands of German soldiers’
Tony Paterson in Berlin
THE CHRISTMAS truce of the Great War in 1914 was started by a “peace movement” of German soldiers who won over their trenchbound British foes by lobbing chocolate cake at them instead of hand grenades, a new book claims.
The interpretation of the events on the Western Front on Christmas Eve 1914 is made by Michael Jurgs whose book, The Small Peace in the Great War is the first to be written about the ceasefire from a German perspective.
The book has received wide publicity in Germany where its findings have been welcomed, not least because they help to dispel the stereotype of the German soldier as a ruthless fighting machine.
“This is the friendly Hun from next door,” wrote Markus Hesselmann in Berlin’s Der Tagesspiegel newspaper. “It’s about German front line soldiers not obeying orders and making peace by leaving their weapons behind.”
Jurgs compares the actions of German soldiers in 1914 to those of the country’s peace movement opposing the Iraq war. “There were not merely one or two incidents of peace on the Western Front in 1914,” he writes. “In reality there was a spontaneous peace movement which ran for hundreds of kilometres and thousands took part,” he adds.
His book reveals that German troops began preparing for the truce well in advance. Several days before Christmas, soldiers from a Saxon regiment lobbed a carefully packaged chocolate cake across no- man’s land into the British trenches. A message was attached asking whether holding a one-hour ceasefire that evening might be possible, so that the troops could celebrate their captain’s birthday.
According to Jurgs, the British stopped firing, stood on their trench parapets and applauded as a German band struck up a rendition of “Happy Birthday”. Jurgs quotes from the diary of Kurt Zehmisch, a German lieutenant who describes how thousands of German Christmas trees delivered to the front line helped to bring about the ceasefire. “It was pure illumination – along the trench parapets there were Christmas trees lit up by burning candles,” Zehmisch writes. “The British responded by shouting and clapping.”
What followed was a bout of unprecedented fraternisation between enemy forces that has never been repeated on an equivalent scale: German Fritzes bearing candles, chunks of cake and cigars met British Tommies carrying cigarettes and Christmas pudding in no-man’s land. The two sides exchanged presents, sang songs and played football, using tin cans for makeshift balls and spiked Pickelhaube helmets for goalposts.
Jurgs says the Germans were able to take the initiative because many had been in Britain as “guest workers” before the war and, unlike most of the British, had a command of the enemy’s language.
The truce collapsed shortly after Christmas 1914 when news of the ceasefire reached the horrified high commands and strict military discipline was reinforced. Jurgs writes that in one area, Ploegsteert forest in Belgium, the ceasefire continued until the end of February 1915.

Does anyone know the reason for “The Holidays”?
Maybe it is because Christ was born and hence it is called Christmas!
Many thanks for this, Hans, as I tap through my tears.
Let’s remember that this truce likely happened because most of the soldiers on both sides of the conflict honoured the same Prince of Peace, who chose to become one of us, poor weak humans that we are, in order to save us from the darkness of self-interest and expediency.
“The Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.” Alleluia!

maz2: No pic of PM Harper in sight.
And why would there be, considering it’s an article about the opposition parties, and not the CPC’s, hinting at an election in ’08. And recall that there were plenty of pics of PM Harper on Thursday and Friday during his traditional year-end interview with every major news outlet in the country.
Gee, a story about the opposition parties includes photos of the opposition party leaders, and a story about the Government of Canada includes a photo of the CPC leader. Surely there are better examples of left-wing MSM bias out there.
I agree, though, that May shouldn’t be lumped in with the opposition party leaders. Still, with the Greens polling at 6% or higher in every recent voter survey, I think it’s fair to include their voice in reports about potential upcoming elections.
Two points:
The entitlement biatch who figured that the Sally Ann should have given her more is a classic example of the problems the Canadian social experiment has produced.
Secondly, As I probably will not have a chance to get on line, I’d like to wish everyone here a Merry Christmas.
Later, y’all.
Lizzie May,without a seat and little chance of getting one, gets about 5 minutes of airtime on CTV’s question period to smear Harper, why? Oh ,I guess I asked and answered that one.
The comments following the CTV.ca story of Dion and his bellowing re: an election are highly unfavourable towards Dion and the LPC.
One more reason why I don’t take this weeks polls seriously…
Merry Christmas Kate! All I want for Christmas is puppy pictures!! And best wishes for a warm and cozy Christmas for all of you!

” Better if he didn’t run for President. He would be hamstrung with a bunch of other issues — the economy, gay rights, health, ect. Better that he be appointed to a (Kyoto ?) position by the next President, probably a Democrat, and be free instead of having to worry about being elected and re-elected.” (paraphrase)
What !? Isn’t that what Maurice Strong said when he pulled out of the running right in the middle of a Canadian Federal election ? And joined the UN ? Audio: Suzuki on Gore.
I guess if one knows what is right for all of us they should not be encumbered with earning our vote.
The Pundits, the Opposition Leaders, the talking heads of CBC and CTV are crapping all over themselves. Why? Harper blew them all out of the water in his interviews. He handled them with ease. He’s cool and sure footed.
He’s got a plan and is slowly and surely slaying the dragons as they toss them in his path.
He’s far above the lot of them. We haven’t seen the likes of him in memory, he’s a gem. The people of Canada are slowly realizing that fact. The Opposition are realizing it too, it shows in their desperate behaviour.
Just wanted to recommend a wonderful ‘older’ Christmas movie called Prancer. It features a real live reindeer and the actor Sam Houston, I believe.
Anyway what struck me about this movie was how it captured the sounds and magic of nature. The sound effects were wonderful – the whole movie was so much more engrossing than those with tons of special effects and cheap laughs.
Another magical movie (not necessarily for Christmas) is The Black Stallion which was so beautifully photographed.
Have a great Christmas everyone and don’t forget to stop to smell the evergreen in your life!
Did anyone note how Harper’s demeanor gave old Count Floyd and that other little Ghoul Robert Fife no opportunity to attack him on anything. There isn’t anything to attack anyway, the man is doing a great job. He is the smartest PM in my long life-time so far.
I also noted that those two ghosts of Christmas past couldn’t bring themselves to say Merry Christmas, but rather the more progressive ‘Happy Holiday’
There is a lot of whining today that Harper’s message wasn’t cheery enough. That demonstrates again that to the lefties it’s not reality that matters, but warm fuzzy bull crap so that no one harshes our buzz.

Hmm . . . Maybe Iāll take off next Ash Wednesday . . .
http://www.canada.com/saskatoonstarphoenix/news/local/story.html?id=2bdb4b9a-2deb-47dd-9f5d-b7a983cf38b8
But I think the fact is our country also consciously changes somewhat for new immigrants and new cultures, and I think that’s a successful model. I think if you look around the world for issues of immigration and cultural integration, Canada is as successful as any other country in this regard.”

And a very Merry Christmas to Kate and all my brothers and sisters here at SDA.
Ok guys its almost Christmas. How about we all stop bickering and being pissed off at our fellow humans for just a few days until the holidays pass. Merry Christmas to all of you.
A very Merry Christmas to Kate and to all of those who make this such an interesting blog.

maz2: No pic of PM Harper in sight.
Suzuki on Gore;

Fat Albert will not run for anything because once he become paid politician he will be forced to debate his scam claims about global warming. Not going to happen.

This is a really interesting article by Margaret Kopala re safe injection sites. Curiously, I could not find it on Google News (even though responses to the article were posted there). The article also doe s not seem to be in the Ottawa Citizen archives, even though I read the original in a print version of the Citizen. Anyway, if you are interested, have a look. It is a real eye-opener: http://www.margretkopala.com/ The article is entitled “Revoke This Licence to Enable”.
The pendulum no longer swings in St Izaakās Cathedral because….
Long ago, unbeknownst to the powerful and the arrogant in a lowly stable a babe was born. Born of a Virgin, in obscurity, attended by farm animals and their herdsmen He who was before time, came unto His own and His own knew Him not. Rejected though He was, considered the bastard child of an immodest tart He stood before High Priests, Kings and Governors and in His death showed us all that there is cause to be. There is cause beyond this mortal realm and the understandings of mere men. For indeed though brought low the grave could not hold Him, the Author of life.
Indeed wise men worship Him still.
Merry Christmas one and all

Iran has stopped their nuclear research program. Oh really??
I really wonder about that fantasy. I mean to pass up the opportunity to thumb its nose at US concerns. Or abandoning the prospect of trying to kick the shit out of their sworn enemy Israel.
