Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

Experts Question Dion’s Trip to Bali
Yesterday foreign policy experts are raising concerns about Stephane Dion’s plan to travel to Bali, questioning Dion’s plan to stage a political stunt on the world stage:
The facts:
Denis Stairs, professor emeritus at Dalhousie University’s Centre for Foreign Policy Studies: But if a party wanted to criticize the government’s actions, “you wouldn’t go abroad to do that,” Mr. Stairs said. “I don’t think there’s anything unusual if he holds his fire until he comes back home,” he added. “But he’d be in very dangerous waters if he made representations to others that departed from official government policy because we do have an elected government.
Whether you like what it represents or not, it is our international representation abroad.” (Embassy, December 5, 2007)
Stairs believed the Liberal leader is trying to score points at home by attending the conference. (Embassy, December 5, 2007)
Former Canadian ambassador the UN Paul Heinbecker agreed, saying it’s unlikely other leaders will pay much attention to the Liberal leader because he doesn’t have any power. (Embassy, December 5, 2007)
However, Mr. Heinbecker said he didn’t think it was “proper” that Mr. Dion will be in Bali and could raise a stink about the Harper government’s position.
“The reality is the government is the government,” he said, “and the position they take is the Canadian position until such time as a different Canadian government takes a different position.” (Embassy, December 5, 2007)
For those of you who are interested in this sort of stuff (and I am aware of SDA’s reader demographics), here’s an essay at the American Scientist magazine on the concept of An Exact Value for Avogadro’s Number – tinyurl.com/3c2l3c – and for those of you who aren’t interested in this sort of thing, please do excuse me.
should say 5.5 billion and then say the federal gubmint.

Vitruvius – the exact value of Avogrado’s Number is 3 🙂
Where’s our late night listening enjoyment?
Make that “Avogadro’s” number. I always hated chemistry…
My apologies, Neil. While I had dreamed of becoming SDA’s late night DJ, I had no idea the shtick was working so well. Anyway, without further ado then, Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight on SDA Late Nite Radio for Thursday, November 6, 2007, we have:
Benny Goodman’s 1937 Medley – When Swing Was King
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dh93540ymaY
and, since we’re in the era:
Dizzy Gillespie’s 1947 Big Band – Groovy Man
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtG5m7P56vk
“‘Cause he beeped, when he should have bopped.”
That’s all for tonight, cats 😉
Ahhhh…Vitruvius – thank you very much Sir. We’ll be listening again tomorrow night on this station. And now I am away to listen to my idol – Benny Goodman (and Dizzy is superb as well). Great choices.
Alas, Neil, I shall be out of radio contact about 1,000 kilometers west of the studio for the next few days. And besides, though this is fun to a degree, it’s not for me to hijack SDA threads for my radio. Once in a while is more than enough.
But since we’re on the topic of Mr. Goodman, here’s his famous Sing Sing Sing, with Gene Krupa on drums, from Hollywood Hotel, in 1937:

And for those of you who aren’t into the jazz thing, don’t forget that there’s always my favourite performance by Karl Richter of J. S. Bach’s Toccata & Fugue in D Minor, BMV 565 (1705), performed at the Abbey Basilica in Ottobeuren, on the Dreifaltigkeitsorgel organ (built in 1766), available here:

Choking The Russian Voice
Heidi Brown, 12.04.07, 6:00 PM ET
The sweeping 70% victory of President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party in the recent Russian elections sucked the air out of the opposition’s attempt to gain even one seat in parliament.
Now Russians could have less of an independent voice in cyberspace.
LiveJournal, the U.S.-based blogging service more Russians use than any other, was acquired on Monday by Russian media holding company SUP–another sign that Russians are losing outlets for personal opinions.
Twenty-eight percent of the traffic on LiveJournal is generated by Russian speakers. So there’s a certain logic for LiveJournal’s parent, San Francisco-based Six Apart, to sell the site to the Russians.
[ I had personal dealings with Six-Apart.. not impressed. = TG ]
Prior to the acquisition, SUP had been managing LiveJournal’s Russian-language postings since last year. But to give you an idea of the fear even expatriate Russians have of being identified or tracked simply for expressing themselves openly, here’s a sample of postings following SUP’s management announcement last year:
** I am living in Germany, but my journal is in Russian, at least the biggest part of it is.
Still, I do not wish to get any help from SUP. Is that possible for me to not have anything to do with them? **
** Can you confirm that SUP will not have the possibility in principle to access the private entries? **
Independent views aren’t truly accepted in Russia. More journalists have been murdered in Russia in
==============================================
the past 15 years than anywhere else except Iraq.
Among them: Anna Politkovskaya, a longtime writer for Novaya Gazeta, one of the country’s few independent newspapers (minority owned by Mikhail Gorbachev), who reported on United Russia’s ongoing attempts to make sure the opposition is stifled.
Her sometimes inflammatory reports of party corruption and electioneering did not endear her to the Kremlin.
Indeed, Russians have a swiftly narrowing choice of independent mainstream reporting from which to choose–the big newspapers are owned by tycoons with chummy relations to the Kremlin–and the government owns the biggest TV station, Channel One.

The Anti-Christian CBC is at it again. Thurs nite they aired the false and error filled teaching of Tom Harpur as a feature documentary. Here are some quotes from the CBC TV website:
================
So, what if it could be proven that Jesus never existed? What if there was evidence that every word of the New Testament – the cornerstone of Christianity – is based on myth and metaphor?
Based on Tom Harpur’s national bestseller, The Pagan Christ examines these very questions. During his research, Harpur discovered that the New Testament is wholly based on Egyptian mythology, that Jesus Christ never lived, and that – indeed – the text was always meant to be read allegorically. It was the founders of the Church who duped the world into taking a literal approach to the scriptures. And, according to Harpur, this was their fatal error – and the very reason Christianity is struggling today.
==============
I for one am getting tired of publically funding this CBC propaganda. Furthermore , for Tom Harpur to use the word theologian beside his name is shamefull. He should just name himself Anti-Christ and leave it at that.

Hey Arnie…Wanna bet the cbc runs that trash again on Christmas Eve?
Agendas of one sort or another, have tried to disprove the Bible for more than 2000 years. They can’t. The cbc needs to be put out of business…permanently.
No doubt, as ASIC says, Tom Harpur will be featured front and centre on Christmas Day. The CBC thinks that Tom Harpur’s some kind of a “Christian” guru: THEIR kind of Christian, which means dissing the Christian Church whenever possible. The guy’s, essentially, a pagan.
One thing I do know about Tom Harpur is that, like so many on the left, he may be an MSM darling but he doesn’t treat his family very well.
His first wife, after three children and 25 years of full participation in his ministry (he used to be a parish priest), apparently had to take him to court for support. She had no career, because she had supported his.
When he was ordered to pay her more support, and was ultimately told it would be garnisheed from his wages, because he refused to co-operate, he apparently quit his job.
I seriously question Harpur’s credibility, not to mention his integrity. Why is it that so many lefties, who claim to love “humanity,” are so dismissive and neglectful of their own families? Picasso, Klimt, and Rousseau come to mind.

“”Progressive” pols, meanwhile, have embraced environmental alarmism because it gives a much-needed boost to their flagging relevance.”
Road to Bali
Peter Foster, Financial Post
The fate of the Earth hangs in the balance in Bali, but the issue is not whether humanity will succumb to a “climate crisis,” or how the international community might craft a successor to the tattered Kyoto Accord (Let’s call it KyoTwo). The real theme of this United Nations gabfest — like that of its 12 predecessors, and of the hundreds, if not thousands, of related meetings –is whether globalization and trade liberalization will be allowed to continue, with a corresponding increase in wealth, health and welfare, or whether the authoritarian enemies of freedom (who rarely if ever recognize themselves as such) will succeed in using environmental hysteria to undermine capitalism and increase their Majesterium. Any successor to Kyoto will be rooted in hobbling rich economies, increasing the poor world’s resentment, unleashing environmental trade warfare, and blanketing the globe with rules and regulations that benefit only rulers and regulators. Bali is not about climate; it symbolizes the continued assault on freedom by those who seek — or pander to — political power under the guise of concern for humanity.
Just at the point where Marxism was being consigned to the dustbin of history, the more or less concealed power lust that had fed it found a new cause in the environment. The fact that the UN’s 1992 Rio conference followed hard on the collapse of the Soviet Union represented almost the passing of a poisoned baton. Capitalism had once been the enemy because it was alleged to make people poor. Now it was the enemy because of the alleged side effects of making them rich. The emissions of carbon-based industrial society would lead to a climate in turmoil:We would be beset by Biblical plagues of floods, droughts and monster hurricanes.
This simplistic narrative depended on carbon dioxide being the main driver of climate. …-

New York store red faced over ‘Hanukkah hams’
Thu Dec 6, 12:55 PM
NEW YORK (AFP) – A posh food store in New York’s Greenwich Village has found itself red faced after offering hams for sale with the slogan “Delicious for Hanukkah,” the current Jewish religious holiday.
The non-kosher labelling was spotted at the weekend by Manhattan novelist Nancy Kay Shapiro, 46, who decided instead of alerting management to take a picture of the unorthodox sign and post it on the Internet.
“I just thought it was funny,” Shapiro, who described herself as an unobservant Jew, told the New York Post. “I wasn’t offended in any way. I just thought, here’s somebody who knows nothing about what Jews eat.”
By the time Shapiro returned to the store on Tuesday, the first night of Hanukkah, the signs had vanished, the newspaper reported.
A manager at the Balducci’s gourmet grocery store told the newspaper that the sign was a mistake and blamed it on a stock clerk.
Pork and shellfish are among the foods considered unclean under Jewish law.
FACTS TO PONDER :
(A) Number of physicians in the U.S. : 700,000
(B) Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year : 120,000
C) Therefore accidental deaths per physician : 0.171
Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept of Health, Human Services.
Now think about this :
GUNS :
(A) Number of gun owners in the U.S. : 80 Million
(B) Number of accidental gun deaths per year, (all age groups) : 1,500
(C) Therefore, number of accidental deaths per gun owner : .000188
Statistics courtesy of the FBI
So, statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more dangerous than gun owners.
Remember, ‘Guns don’t kill people, doctors do.
FACT: Not everyone has a gun, but
ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.
Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.
We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand !

There is no need to sue HRC – one just needs to appeal the conviction.
True, Aaron, but I’d just like to see someone win, say, $100,000 in a libel case against an HRC. Surely if the allegations against Winnipeg police cannot stand up to scrutiny in a Court of law, then someone or some entity is liable for libel?
Dan Cook’s blogolotics today gives the exchange between Russ Hiebert and Schrieber whereby Schrieber says that the Liberal party is part of the conspiracy and cover-up. I watched the CBC at noon for their hour coverage and when the question at long last came to Schrieber about the Liberal party along with Germany being part of the conspiracy to extradite him , Don Newman interrupted the coverage with breaking news about the Pickton trial. Coincidence? I think not.
This is an absolutely stunning development in history.
New documents have been found in an old desk in Moscow.
It appears that Leo Tolstoi once worked at the Compulsory Wheat Board in Russia.
When he was interviewed, he was asked what his exact job at the Compulsory Wheat Board was when he was there.
He replied:
“I sit on a man’s back, choking him and making him carry me, and yet assure myself and others that I am very sorry for him and wish to lighten his load by all possible means – except by getting off his back.” – Tolstoi.
Who would have ever thunk that?
Caroline Glick, Column One: The abandonment of the Jews
The US National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Iran’s nuclear intentions is the political version of a tactical nuclear strike on efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear bombs.
The NIE begins with the sensationalist opening line: “We judge with high confidence that in fall 2003, Teheran halted its nuclear weapons program.” But the rest of the report contradicts the lead sentence. For instance, the second line says, “We also assess with moderate-to-high confidence that Teheran at a minimum is keeping open the option to develop nuclear weapons.”
…
So not only does the NIE make it impossible for the US to take action against Iran, it also sets a dangerous trap for Israel. If Israel doesn’t take action against Iran’s nuclear installations it risks annihilation. And if it does take action, it can expect to be subject to international and American condemnation far worse than what it suffered after bombing Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor in 1981.
‘Energy Tower’ concept offers major source of alternative energy
So what is it? Project founder, Professor Dan Zaslavsky of the Department of Agricultural Engineering at the Technion – Israel Institute of Science, explains. It’s a tall tower, 1,000 yards in height and 400 yards in diameter, located somewhere hot and dry with a source of water at the ready nearby – either the sea, brackish estuarine, or drainage water.
The water is used to cool the air at the top of the tower. The heavier cooled air sinks downwards, gathers speed as it falls, finally powering turbines at the tower’s base. Put simply, it’s the principle of convection – warm air rises above cool air – a law so fundamental that it is taught in elementary schools.
…
His team estimates the running costs of the electricity for this project at 2.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, less than a third of the cost of electricity in Israel today, and far cheaper than any mooted alternative such as solar, hydro-electric or wind power.
But is a movie version in the works?
Fight for Tickets
The subject of Black Watch is that historic Scots regiment’s controversial and deadly tour of duty in Iraq in 2004. The script is drawn from interviews with former soldiers of the Black Watch and from their commander’s emails home, which expressed doubts about their role and were leaked to the press.
…
“It’s not an anti-war play and it’s not anti-soldiering. One of the main industries of Scotland is soldiering. It’s been there from the beginning of time. Highlanders love fighting. It’s a Celtic warrior culture and to deny that, to try and make out we’re this loving nation – we are the most violent country in the Western world.
“If you cannae get your hands up, don’t leave the house. That’s the attitude in Scotland.”
The play gives a voice to the frustrations of the Black Watch troops, including the men who in 2004 were sent to Fallujah in support of a US assault to block the enemy’s retreat through “rat runs” around the city. It was an exercise that left them vulnerable. Anger, confusion and betrayal are their lot.
My thoughts … I believe Dion’s trip to Bali is to obtain sound bites from European officials on how wonderful Dion was when he was Minister of the Environment, etc to be used in the next election cause he has nothing else to use. Dion will not slam Canada, he will get others to do so and use that against Harper.
Dipper Mathyssen is not going to fully apologise to James Moore, she’s merely going to apologize for not going to him first to clarify.

Today is the anniversary of Pearl Harbor Day.
I would like to salute all our Fathers, Grand-Fathers, and Fore-Fathers for their sacrifice to Our Great Country.
Freedom is not Free it comes at a price, and the generation before us paid that price. Everything we now have we owe to them, but they do not want
our gratitude, or our sorrow, or our symphathy. What they do want is for us to continue to carry the Torch of Freedom where ever it is needed be it on our shores or on foreign shores .
These days the Activists claim seperation of Church and State and even sue the Government to take ” In God We Trust ” off our currency. If our Trust is not to be in God then who ? The good Senator Craig who stalks Gays in the Airport Bathrooms ? Or, how about Senator Kennedy , who left a Mothers Daughter to die while he saved himself, or how about Senator Reid , whose only mission in life is to undermine the Troops and declare defeat in Iraq. How their souls must
ache knowing they are wrong, knowing they will burn in hell , and knowing there is no way back to salvation.
Many good souls perished at Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 when our Freedom and Resolve was tested. Our Fathers and Grand-Fathers rose to that test and banded together as One Nation Under God to show our enemies we would not go quietly into the night , We will Stand Together, and We would not be Tread Upon !
Pearl Harbor was 60 years ago and Our Great Country is still here, still thriving, still
going forward, still protecting Freedom, despite the nay-sayers who live among us. In those 60 years we have had Great Presidents and not-so-Great Presidents. The Great Presidents knew we could have Peace if we carried a Big Stick , the not-so-Great Presidents tried the Olive-Branches and Appeasements and put theirselves and their greed before God and Country. This Country will always survive the not-so-Great Presidents because of the survival instincts impelled in her from our Fathers and Grand-Fathers who constantly reminded us to Endeavor to Perceiver thru our Bill of Rights, our Constitution , and our undying Faith in Freedom, God, and this Great Country.
Today, I would like to Honor all those who perished at Pearl Harbour, and I would like for them to know that we are still fighting the good fight, and we will continue to fight the good fight with them in our hearts and as long as we can stand.
My only consession in life is the one and same as my Father and his Father before him, Freedom, the Pursuit of Happiness, to be able to Worship in your own home, and I do this for my Children and your Children, so they do not have to live in fear from Tyranny, Dictatorship , Socialism and Communism. Freedom is what America stands for and it is not Free, and we must never forget our Fathers, our Fore-Fathers and Pearl Harbor for the price they paid was the greatest of all.
Thank You and God Bless.

Tom Harpur is a Gnostic. Gnostics have been trying to disprove Christ for hundreds of years. To no avail.
It’s pretty tough when they have to deal with some 25,000 credible texts from the same era, that support the validity of the historical Christ.
It’s also hard to rationalize why the NT wasn’t changed throughout the centuries – especially during the dark ages, when the public had no access – in order to justify and sanitize the horrendous attrocities the Catholic Church and it’s princes commited.
Like Mohammad did with his texts.
But old Tom doesn’t care. Not when Hitchens, et al have proven there’s bag fulls of money to be made from the ignorant.
In the midst of the recent attack on free speech in the Mark Steyn complaint comes a genuine test of see who is truly libertarian and who is merely conservative. Call it the “Gom Gabbar” of civil liberties.
From the Guardian (www.guardian.co.uk/print/0,,331473513-111274,00.html):

‘Lyrical terrorist’ sentenced over extremist poetry
A 23-year-old former Heathrow shop assistant who called herself the “lyrical terrorist” and scrawled her extremist thoughts on till receipts has been handed a nine-month suspended jail sentence.
Samina Malik became the first woman convicted under new terrorism legislation after writing poems entitled How To Behead and The Living Martyrs.
Malik, described as an “unlikely but committed” Islamic extremist, was last month convicted by an jury at the Old Bailey of a charge under the 2000 Terrorism Act.
She worked at WH Smith at Heathrow, where she scribbled her extremist lyrics on till receipts. On one she wrote: “The desire within me increases every day to go for martyrdom.”
But Malik told the jury she only adopted her “lyrical terrorist” nickname because she thought it was “cool” and insisted: “I am not a terrorist.” […]
Malik had tears in her eyes as she left the dock, while her mother wept during the court hearing. The judge said Malik’s crime was on the “margins” of the offence of which she was found guilty. He said Malik was of “good character” and from a “supportive and law-abiding family who are appalled by the trouble that you are in”. […]
Jonathan Sharp, prosecuting, told the court she visited a website linked to the jailed cleric Abu Hamza and stored material about weapons. The court also heard Malik belonged to a social networking website called hi5, describing her interests as “helping the mujaheddin in any way which I can”.
Under favourite TV shows, she listed: “Watching videos by my Muslim brothers in Iraq, yep the beheading ones, watching video messages by Osama bin Laden and Ayman al-Zawahri and other videos which show massacres of the kaffirs.”[…]
Inayat Bunglawala said: “It always seemed a rather bizarre decision to prosecute Samina when she is clearly not an actual terror plotter.
“Samina Malik was being prosecuted in effect for a thought crime because she had downloaded some material from the internet which anyone could download.” Mr Bunglawala said the case demonstrated how ill-conceived and “incredibly broad-ranging” the law is under Section 58 of the Terrorism Act.
———————————
She spent 5 months in custody before the trial was even held.
Here’s samples of the dangerous, criminal, threatening words she wrote: http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk_news/story/0,,2223174,00.html
(Also, if you read through the rest of the article, a good example of why flexibility of sentencing instead of mandatory minimum sentences can be a just thing, but that’s another discussion).
