Readers should note that not all the share values indicated in this interesting little review are comparable. This one should be reduced by 90% to recognize the share consolidation at 1 for 10 that happened between 2002 and 2007.
“Nov. 27, 2007: Nortel opens at $16.70”
I am happy to say that I have never, ever taken the advice of Garth Turner with respect to any financial decision I have ever made.
Garth who?
Garth?… isn’t he the guy that jumped to the Liberal party because they were the ethical ones?
Perhaps Garth is advising the libs on financial matters??
As felis corpulentis pointed out above, after the 10:1 stock consolidation, the G&M reported that Nortel stock opened trading at $16.70 on Nov. 27, 2007 (ie. the pre-consolidation equivalent is $1.67), so Nortel’s stock has dropped by 97.3% from its pre-consolidation price of $61.10 when Turner recommended “If you do not own Nortel, then this is the time to start accumulating it….”
Gee, Mr. Turner, now that you have clearly established your whizardly financial acumen, do you suggest we hold our 2.7 cents on the dollar left from the Nortel investment you recommended, or do you have a new hot stock for the pennies on the dollar investment that we have left?
That’s right Garth.

Maybe he should change the name of his blog to “Garth Turner UnAudited.”

Who takes either political or economic advice from english-lit majors? 😉
Darth Turner advocated that people mortgage their houses and put the money into the stock market.
There’s nothing intrinsically wrong with this if one knows what one is doing. Most don’t and it was criminal of him to suggest this to the public at large.
Not only did he suggest to the general public mortgaging your house to invest in the stock market, he did it just prior to two of the worst stock market years in recent history: http://www.garth.ca/columns/010129.shtml
In other words, this loser called Garth belongs in the party he is in, he has all the qualifications, ie: he is stupid, he lies, he is misguided in all aspects of life, and he looks right at home looking up dions ass in question period, good move garth, you rudderless liberal fool.
Barf Turnip owns a small business 2 miles from here> When he bought his murdercycle that he paraded infront of parlament on, he brought it up here and bounced it off 2 cars (actually a P-up and a car) and paid CASH for the damages, so no paper trail. What the fool didn’t know was that is was recorded on a security camera. I’d love to get hold of that tape:-))))
Kind of reminds me of Dome Petoleum in the 80s. Worked in the Artic on Tarsuit Island. We were burning all the used oil, contaminated diesil, and anti-freeze by forcing it out to the burner boom by a Dyno pump with added air. Sure made a nice flare. The helo flew over and took pictures. 3 days later was reading the sun [2 dats old] and seen the picture. Was up there for 35 days and when at home I was talking to a cousin who invested a lot of his savings in Dome stock. A lot of people mortaged thier houses and life savings in Dome stock. 90 days later Dome stock crashed. Never invested money in the for sure market thru a dip shit like Garth. He is a COYOTE and I feel sorry for the real animal called the Coyote because they are good for cleaning up mice, rats and bugs. Merle Underwood
Those who seek advice from Garth Turner, (are probably Garth Turner Himself, blogging under a different name). Right, Garth? (Come on- you can tell us ). Uh……wait a minute- what political party are you currently ‘representing’?
Do you qualify for your pension, yet?
Ugh. I saw Garth in a 1999 meeting when he was touting tech stocks, and I knew he was a train-chasing fool. I wonder how many of the people who followed his advice, and were either bankrupt or nearly broke as a result, have received a single penny of retribution from the fool.
And, I have to say, I manage a 7-figure fund for my extended family, and in the last 7 years, we’ve more than doubled. I was able to do that while maintaining a high cash position (T-bills) because I knew that preservation of capital was more important than gains. However, by examining global trends, I was able to position us strategically in a few areas, and we were able to make great gains. I will also note that some of those gains were distributed to various family members as profit during the last few years. I was able to help my brothers in law pay for their kids’ college education, and my two daughters already have more $250k in their trust and RESP funds, and they are 13 and 10. By the time my oldest is ready for university, I’m pretty sure we’ll have over $500k for her.
Kate, if you want to contact me directly (I’m sure you have access to my e-mail), I’ll be happy to discuss your financial situtation, and mke some recommendations; no charge. I enjoy your site, and this would allow me to give a little back to you.

nortel once accounted for 30% of the canadian market cap and the brokers were still pushing it .
if all of communications in the whole country were worth 10% of the market cap then it would be too much.
there should have been nortel types and brokers who went to jail for that fiasco. but this in Canaduh.
