Warmer winters. Wetter* summers. I’m failing to see the downside in this;
As I’ve written before, the solar cycle appears to be reaching the end of its manic phase, and we should not be surprised by the onset of rather crisp global cooling over the coming decades. But even supposing the warming trend were to continue geometrically, in obedience to doomsday rhetoric, why on earth would a Canadian Conservative be alarmed?
For IF this were true, it would be Canada’s lucky day. We should be gloating! The world will be starving, while we are farming the Hudson Bay lowlands. The world will be parched, while we are guzzling the fresh glacial run-off. Bring on the sun!
Though, admittedly, future generations of prairie farmers may be deprived of that quintessential Canadian experience of frost in August.
Moreover, a quick atlas check persuades me that there is a fairly close demographic relation, both in Canada and USA, between height above sea level and the propensity to vote gliberal (i.e. Liberal and NDP, or Democrat). Such that, a sea level rise of just 50 feet would give us a Conservative majority up here, and put the Republicans back in charge of Congress down there, while guaranteeing that neither Hillary nor Chelsea Clinton ever becomes President. (The submergence of Prince Edward Island alone would cost our Liberals four seats.)
As I said – I’m failing to see the downside in this.

I planted palm trees this year . . . wanna be ready to corner the Canadian market on palm oil.
The August frost in 2004 cost us thousands of dollars.Frozen wheat and flax arent worth much.In any other industry if the same happened the result would have been catastrofic but farmers usually just plod on.
Hmmm, where to begin?
Warrens essay is the perfect display of the selfishness and stupidity inherent in the thought processes of people like him.
I’m wondering if Warren (and Kate) really believe Climate Change is a good thing when the rest of the world is starving and parched, and we are farming the lower areas of Hudson Bay and drinking glacial run-off.
“As long as it ain’t us” is no excuse for this kind of stupid thinking. Thanks for linking to it Kate, without it I never would have truly understood the position of idiots like him.
It takes a certain amount of intelligence to read and understand David Warren. I would think his comment about submerging PEI to get rid of three liberal seats would alert even the most dullwitted person that his tone was not entirely serious.
Of course, your average lefty lacks even the most rudimentary sense of humour.
Warren is a compassionate, intelligent writer; it’s best for some not to wade into that kind of depth.
Throbbin: there seems to be a whole lott’a guilt built up inside. The point is we in the Northern Hemisphere will feed the world; we will be the breadbasket. And it will be us, not the Russians, who couldn’t run an outhouse on a Saskatchewan homestead. That is if we don’t destroy ourselves trying to stop the inevitable.
Just listen to Mr. Dion’s emotional throbbings about climate change and the plan he has to stop it.
The most dangerous thing in the world is a Liberal with a mission. That’s a quote; author unknown.
Throbbin, I see the vein on the side of your head a-throbbin’. Anger over the stupid people thinking for themselves instead of buying the hysterical BS.
The weather is always warming and cooling on short and long time-scales. Summer is great; a longer growing season is great. We have very little effect on these changes and absolutely no control over them.
If you think mankind is producing too much CO2, hold your breath. I’ll keep breathing, driving my car and using electricity and cocnrete.
If I listen to much more of Harper’s climate doom drivel I swear I’ll open a carbon credit bank and sell “Harper CO2 bucks” from a push art in front of parliament.
Give your head a shake Steven…the climate doom schtick is supposed to come from the moonbat opposition benches.
.
Harper has morphed into a climate change idiot for the votes. Just another politician eh what?
I did vote for him last time. I will not vote at all next time. I would prefer to lose with integrity than win by pretending that fantasy is fact.
.
Throbbin, your collectivist addiction is stinking up the thread. Life is not fair never was never can be. Most of the starvation in the world is MAN-MADE. And those men are the ones in charge of their starving populations. You will deny this because you stupidly think everyone should think like you, but the fact is they don’t. That puts you squarely in the Identity Trap. Perhaps you are just young and idealistic. If you are old, then you are simply a dullard.
“Harper has morphed into a climate change idiot for the votes. Just another politician eh what?”
Fear not Harper is no greener today than when he declared the Kyoto protocol to be a socialist plot. It seems he hit his target with some who were swindled into thinking aspirational or intensity targets are an actual step towards fighting climate change. Thankfully those who typically take what Harper says with suspicion once again saw right through his little green charade.
With regards to Churchill one simply needs to look at source David Warren uses to make his argument, Fred Singer. If there ever was one source more damaging to your argument than quoting Tim Ball, then it’s Fred Singer. There is no science behind singers argument. There is speculation with a healthy supply of cash from corporate think tanks, but no there’s science.
One only needs to look at the above article to realize the true tone of his argument. When he states
“And does my reader have any idea what open shipping through the Northwest Passage would mean for Canadian business? Billions, my boy, billions”
his true ideology shines through. This man thinks money, nothing is more important to him than money. Artic ecosystems, threatened agriculture and rooted lives along coastal regions of the globe mean nothing to this man, just as the facts behind the warming mean nothing to him. A select few may make billions, but in the end it’s going to cost the rest of us more billions than we make and it will have a larger cost in lives, my boy, lives.
“For IF this were true, it would be Canada’s lucky day. We should be gloating! The world will be starving, while we are farming the Hudson Bay lowlands. The world will be parched, while we are guzzling the fresh glacial run-off. Bring on the sun!”
Canada’s lucky day? Well except for-
“The submergence of Prince Edward Island alone would cost our Liberals four seats.”
What an incredibly vile human being.
Kate, by posting this load of trash are you saying that you agree with his words that drowning regions of this country and gloating while part of the human population starve to death is a good thing?
How selfish of other countries —– they want to keep Canada a mostly frozen waste land while they enjoy subtropical and tropical paradise. And destroy our economy to accomplish it !!
‘IF’ they had the power to do it — would be outrageous. Pretending they can slight us like that is pathetic.
One has to admire the arrogance of the left. They somehow think a handful of Canadians can change the world. Whether it be climate change, Africa, AIDS, hunger or whatever.
The earth’s climate will change, tribal lunacy will continue for eons, people will engage in dangerous sexual behavior, droughts and famine will come and go, and there is not jack squat any of these moonbats can do about it.
So, go spew at the leftard blogs, because it does not matter how much you whine, it will not change a thing. If you really want to change things, star emailing chairman mo, cretin, CSL and the family compact. Those folks are your problem dudes.
Real jobs for the Inuit; profitable rice paddies in Alberta; less of the perishing cold in Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, and indeed in Ottawa and Montreal. Global warming will be good for us – IF it happens!
And in Africa this month Uganda is seeing torrential rains and flooding with more predicted for October.
Where’s the drought?
Climate change is inevitable. The telemarketer says that the science says so. And, as caring Canadians, we should be happy to shoulder the burden of feeding the starving, scorched world in the aftermath of Global Warming. Its like giving welfare and school scholarships to illegal immigrants, only more of them. To not take advantage of Global Warming is worse than denying the existance of Global Warming. That throbbin guy is a big meanie. Is he a Christian, or what?
Those of you who are aghast at what you think you heard from Mr. Harper better give another listen.
I have not heard anything to be worried about yet.
Our Prime Minister is one sharp cookie, have you noticed that the media appears to be taking a more critical look at Kyoto now that he is taking some tentative steps to curb greenhouse gasses?
The protocol that Mr. Harper engineered at the APEC meeting was brilliant.
Follow the logic here.
When the globe warms naturally, as it has been in its emergence from the latest ice age, we will have to burn LESS to heat our houses.
That means less allegedly harmful emissions.
And how is this a bad thing?
It’ll cost less to heat your house, so …
Kate: is there a way you could put the poster’s name at the top of their post? This would save me from scrolling down, then up, if I want to read the post.
With the name at the bottom, I scroll down to see if it is from Throbbin or albatros39a; if it, I do not scroll back up. I do not waste my time reading thier twaddle, and I usually skip over the posters who feed these trolls.
Your site has a lot going for it, and I do not like to see pixels wasted by Throbbin or albatros39a; but, they consistently did so; at least, in those posts from them that I have read. And I doubt that they have improved since I stopped reading their twaddle.
Leftards mourning the demise of yet another sacred cow. Love that sound.

“Kate, by posting this load of trash are you saying that you agree with his words that drowning regions of this country and gloating while part of the human population starve to death is a good thing?”
Absolutely. Why should mankind get off when they are responsible for drowning all the polar bears? It’s Gaia’s revenge! Since human activity is responsible for global warming, the fewer humans, the less greenhouse gases. Sounds like a deal to me.

…you agree with his words that drowning regions of this country and gloating while part of the human population starve to death is a good thing?
Who’s drowned or starved?
If you are going to represent a contrary opinion that’s appreciated and respectable if you’ve got a reasoned mind and facts to support your position, otherwise, you are a really pathetic fool at a keyboard hoping that any garbage will stick. It’s impossible to nail jello to a tree.
albatros and throbbin have you guys thought of movung to PEI any time soon??
Let’s not forget that Alby is the guy who wants to sterilize Africa to save Gaia. Reduce the surplus population, y’know.
Will Toronto be submerged too? How about Vancouver? That will help cull the Librano vote.
Did anyone stop to think that you supposed ‘global warming’ is simply the planet attempting to reduce the human population to sustainable levels?
Lets face it, if half the population of Africa and the middle east cooked to death, how is that a bad thing?
Survival of the fittest, since time began. Think of it as the Ultimate Darwin award for being the biggest pack of corrupt, murderous despots.
Shere Khan – the Sun is going to do what it is going to do. I had an encounter with a left leaning geologist this weekend, he admitted that he just couldn’t support GW with solid facts. He admitted that feeling side of his brain wasn’t in his best interest as a student of empirical science.
The idiots that want to stop breeding or regress to the Stone Age to save the planet are really a good thing, they present us with a chance to clean out the gene pool at intervals without resorting to homocide. It’s as old as the human fossil record.
set you free, the Earth is actually still in an ice age. This warm period that we’re in is known as an interglacial period, where the glaciers retreat from North America and Eurasia but do not disappear entirely. The current interglacial has lasted about 12,000 years; the lengths of the last few interglacials have varied from 20,000-100,000 years.
When an ice age truly ends, the glaciers are just plain gone. 55 million years ago, the sea temperature in the Arctic was over 20 degrees C.
Human induced GW is simply hysteria bred by a cabal of millionaires to co-erce the populace to pour more money into their companies. Follow the money, who stands best to benefit?
Ian hits it bang on. Science teachers were lecturing exactly that when I was in high school. Mars and Europa have also been showing signs of warming, so apparently aliens are also burning far too many fossil fuels. I for one can’t wait to swim in my speedos in the Arctic Ocean.
You said it Penny, we are all one 6 week power failure away from anarchy ourselves…..
One more salvo from GW’s evidently dwindling ranks:
“We are at a significant tipping point. If people knew that they were threatening the environment by eating more meat, they might think twice about ordering a burger.”
-Geri Brewster, nutritionist.

You knew Rotten Ronnie’s was going to take a hit from these guys some day.

You are correct Alby. Absolutely correct. 100%. Therefore we should stop this global warming trend right now. Pass a law in parliament and congress. Outlaw global warming and stop it in its tracks. Its unthinkable to make money off someone else’s missfortune. What-we can’ stop it! Why can’t we stop global warming? We can put a man on the moon so why can’t we just stop it? Well. even if we can’t stop it we shouldn’t take advantage of it in Canada. I mean, thats not Canadian. We should turn the NW passage over to the americans, or the russians. Let them make all the money. Yea, that’s the ticket, let someone else take advantage of warmer winters.
Good thinking Alby. Good thinking.

I think your geologist friend should stick to his rocks and let climatologists deal with the science above the lithosphere.
Don’t worry penny, environmentalist don’t want you to “regress to the stone age” you’re going to advance to sustainability.

“GW’s evidently dwindling ranks”
The ranks are hardly dwindling.
Albatros:
Climatology has only existed a a recognized discrete discipline for about 40 years, and many of the older gurus who self-identify as climatologists hold doctorates in geography, meteorology, glaciology (a branch of geology) etc. Warmist hero and computer cowboy Anthony Weaver is actually an oceanographer.
A lot of us evil non-believers are earth scientists because we are familiar with both cyclical and random events in the earth’s chronology.
As an aside, did you actually take Warren’s tongue in cheek essay seriously? My God, read it again and get a life. I didn’t think that even a dedicated leftist could be that dense.
Sorry, ANDREW Weaver. Getting on towards my bedtime.
Albatross:
When the charge is being led by nutritionists, the ranks are dwindling.
Warren? Seriously?
He sure is putting that grade ten education to good use on the internet. But if you like linking to Rapture idolaters, feel free Kate.
frost here in eastern ontario by the lake. cool for sept 15th.
Frost in New England last night. Lived by the same lake for 15 years. Skated last winter on 12 straight weekends. First time in all those years. 10 years ago, it didn’t freeze at all. It’s getting colder here, heating feul consumption is up.
I’ve been an AGW warming skeptic since the term was invented. As a hydro engineer, I am more involved in climatologigal studies than most climatologists.
Geologists, on the other hand, have a deeper understanding of historical processes than any climatologist, who are, after all, just number crunchers.
I am all in favour of the submergence of PEI, where all 4 residents are gliberal MPs.
You can’t see the downside to a globe of human beings all wanting to get into Canada, with our liberal immigration laws and penchant to grant 50% of all illegal refugees asylum?
Hmmmm…
Hey, Ian in NS and Zog, are you both Geologists? You sound like geologists, especially Ian – did you work in N. Sask. in the late 70’s? If not, wrong Ian.
As for jlc, you are correct. Most geologists have a better understanding of earthly (and planetary) processes than most specialists in their individual scientific fields. We sort of tie it all together to produce a “history”. Let’s face it, the rocks and sediments don’t lie. They read like a good detective novel and there is always a story to be told in every rock and formation. It takes agood rock detective to decipher the real sequence of events.
I’m amazed how scientists can predict what will happen on the North Pole in 10 years from now, yet they can’t predict tomorrow morning’s weather correctly.
In Southern Sask., the average date for the last spring frost is May-21, the first fall frost is Sept 21. Looking at older ag publications, those dates haven’t changed in decades. Even a one degree celsius increase in average daytime temp would push those dates back (or up) considerably.
As for the Stevenson screen and it’s proper location, the Canadian Dept. of Meterology (now Environemnt Canada) once stressed on having the screens at least 50 ft. from any buiding or structure, in an open space 4 ft. above a grassed in surface. Paint used on the screen’s surface was standard across the nation, as was the cedar stand.
Last but not least, the temp. was recoded twice daily, by people who knew how to read a mechanical thermometer.
Maybe GW is a good thing. I have a better idea than waiting for PEI for fall into the ocean, lets pack up our bags and leave first.
This Confederation has been doomed since the N.Energy program. I’m 33 and I’ve known this since Jr.high, I’ve had some musings over the years that a Reform government could repair the damage to our country, but past elections have shown the true colors or our eastern bothers/sisters. This infighting in the Liberal ranks is a thread of hope that Harper can get a majority; but, i wouldn’t count on it.Unless Harper can wave the wand and we get a EEE senate Western sepatation is enevitable.
downside Kate?
how about global warming *whatever* the cause, will doom millions, nay, Billions on the planet to parched desolate starvation existence.
as if we dont have enough in that state already.
in the face of this, why do you gloat?
all hail another insensitive self-‘right’eous conservative.
“Ian – did you work in N. Sask. in the late 70’s? If not, wrong Ian.”
I was born in the mid-70s, so definitely the wrong Ian :).
It’s not hard these days to find out some basic history of the planet. I remembered the bit about interglacials from a newspaper article I read a couple years back, where the author noted that when an interglacial ends, it ends FAST – within 10 years you could kiss Canada and Northern Eurasia good-bye, buried under ice or at least turned into frozen tundra for the next hundred thousand years or so. The bit about the Arctic ocean sea temperature came from a few minutes on Wikipedia.
And the GW doomsayers want us to get all worked up over a measly degree or two of warming? I think not.
huh? “will doom millions, nay, Billions on the planet to parched desolate starvation existence”
Watch any TV news lately huh? A huge swath of equatorial Africa has been inundated by the worst floods in human memory. The doomsayers are blaming the disaster on, you guessed it, global warming.
What a bunch of primativist rubbish!
Wow – I drop one line and you guys go nutty.
Easy to dismiss me and call me a troll, leftard, etc. (that’s getting kinda old kinda fast by the way).
What’s really interesting is the way so many people have devoted time to detailing how and/or why they won’t bother reading my stuff anymore.
You keep ignoring, I’ll keep writing – deal?
This line particularly impressed me – “Real jobs for the Inuit…”
I don’t feel I can speak for all Inuit, but as one Inuk I will say “Thanks, but no thanks. Oh, and thanks for looking out for us.”
This one was good too – “It’s not hard these days to find out some basic history of the planet. Wikipedia? Are you kidding me? People like the Phantom give me sh!t for referencing wikipedia – I guess if you agree with him he can lower his standards a bit.
Anyways, keep up the denial, and good luck with all that.
