Justice Muhammad Taqi Usmani argues that Muslims should live peacefully in countries such as Britain, where they have the freedom to practise Islam, only until they gain enough power to engage in battle.
His views explode the myth that the creed of offensive, expansionist jihad represents a distortion of traditional Islamic thinking.
Mr Usmani, 64, sat for 20 years as a Sharia judge in Pakistan’s Supreme Court. He is an adviser to several global financial institutions and a regular visitor to Britain. Polite and softly spoken, he revealed to The Times a detailed knowledge of world events and his words, for the most part, were balanced and considered.
He agreed that it was wrong to suggest that the entire nonMuslim world was intent on destroying Islam. Yet this is a man who, in his published work, argues the case for Muslims to wage an expansionist war against nonMuslim lands.
Mr Usmani’s justification for aggressive military jihad as a means of establishing global Islamic supremacy is revealed at the climax of his book, Islam and Modernism. The work is a polemic against Islamic modernists who seek to convert the entire Koran into “a poetic and metaphorical book” because, he says, they have been bewitched by Western culture and ideology.
If nothing else, the comments are reassuring. Whether they can muster the resolve to save themselves is another matter.

Yes boys and girls Islam has always been a religion of expansion through violence and intimidation. All our wishing hoping and excusing will not change this fact. However we are not hopeless. Even today followers of Islam are coming to knowledge of the Saving Grace of Jesus Christ. In Islamic North Africa a very tall black Christian and a very short white Christian led of God walked for many days traveling from the main city to this small village. Upon their arrival the two men were greeted as God’s messengers. It just so happened that one of the village elders had been having a recurring dream that God was sending the village two messengers one tall and black and the other short and white.
The two Christians did not want to go to the village knowing that converting a Muslim to Christianity is punishable by death in an Islamic country. Yet upon their arrival the entire village asked them to speak and within days the entire adult population was baptized into the Christian faith. BTW not one of the villagers wants to resort to violence to bring about the conversion of any other villages in the neighbourhood.

when Muslims get the chance to read the Old and New Testament they will eventually see that the Koran is a muddled up version of the events and characters of the Bible – this will hopefully lead to more questioning and what I hope will one day be a recognition of the Koran and Islam as a stepping stone to recognizing G-d and G-d moving in history. Here is the proposed most likely explanation of the existence of the Bible: Someone made up the whole story. Someone else later wrote it down. A third individual put it together with other manuscripts, and the entire nation conspired to agree that it had actually happened. They agreed to agree on only one version of how it had happened, eradicating any trace of dissent.
Basically, a conspiracy theory. This time, involving huge numbers of people over a very long period of time.

The type of idiocy expounded by religious leaders like Usmani is never going to be believed by more than a handful of zealots in western countries. The vast majority of Muslims living here don’t want Shariah and are very happy with the freedoms they enjoy. How on earth could millions of Muslims live in the west and still hold to a belief that things were better in their dysfunctional homelands? Not likely.
Devout Muslims like Usmani are rightly worried that the opposite is occurring. As Muslims in the west are exposed to freedom and democratic principles they are becoming more – not less – inclined to support the laws and ideals of their new home.

Belisarius – not so fast. Polls here and in Europe are pretty depressing in the large minority support for sharia and justification for terrorists. Quite a few of the recently intercepted terrorist groups here and the EU have been 1st and 2nd generation Muslims.
I don’t think that adherents of Islam unless they denounce it and walk away from it can ever effectively straddle what’s required for a secular democracy and Islam. Oh, sure lots of Germans in the 30’s didn’t like the Nazis, but, after ’45 we had a clear picture of how little that mattered. Worse, we had a clear picture of how many physicians, teachers, regular folks, and some clergy aided that evil fascism. It took an elaborate infrastructure
and a wall of indifference to murder 6 million Jews. Germany didn’t get back on track and join the brotherhood of decent people until after it was conquered and thoroughly de-Nazified.
