  1. While we are clearing up misconceptions about atheism, maybe I can address a misconception about Christian theology.
Christian theology (as distinct from a lot of messages from the pulpit) has been powerfully affected by science, by Naziism, and by Nietsche’s idea that God is dead.
This is all too much to go into.
Suffice it to say that modern theology with Karl Barth, Paul Tillich, and in particular Dietrich Bonhoeffer has moved in a direction of “religion-less Christianity.”
Many theologians have been influenced by the fact that a bunch of good Lutherans could be involved with Naziism.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer was an enormously famous theologian who could have easily sat World War II out in Britain or the US. However, his Christian integrity demanded that he stay in Germany and actively conspire against Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party.
As a consequence of this, Bonhoeffer was imprisoned by the Nazis and executed. He never once relaxed the principles on which he stood, and he died in complete faith in God and his actions.
He was appalled at the apparent breakdown of humanity’s moral and spiritual nature, and it led him to believe that the aspect of other-worldliness of the church was outdated and had been superceded by a humanity that had come of age.
For Bonhoeffer, as well as Tillich, Christianity was essentially a cultural expression, and he advocated a policy of Christian worldliness.
He wanted to create a theology that could be lived and required an authentic response to being and God, and caring for the world, and participating in God’s suffering. This was not meant to be anti-church or a rejection of chuch, rather that the most important part of Christianity is the manifestation of a Christian orientation in participating in the world.
So my point is that a lot of critics of Christianity and the Judeo-Christian tradition do so without a knowledge of what great Christian thinkers are considering and advocating.
Naturally, these ideas are rarely discussed in the context of ordinary Christian worship.
I once asked a university professor who was also ordained why we had never heard of the Synoptic Gospels in church, and he replied, “Most pastors would be afraid they’d get fired.”
And so many of the most important ideas in Christendom are not discussed in a popular context.

  2. vitruvius, the logophile!! However, I completely agree that it does indeed matter more on whether we agree on matters of moral judgment than on how or why we so agree.
But, many point out that it is fundamentally impossible for an atheist to have any moral judgment! That’s my point..
robert in calgary- I disagree with your equating atheism with secular humanism and with your comment that atheism substitutes an ‘I am god’ for ‘pray to god’. Genuine atheism does not include such hubris, such arrogance, to say that ‘I am god’. Never. The individual is merely a part of Natural Reason. That’s all – and that’s a humble small part.
As for Christianity – I’ve commented before on my analysis of the reasons for its appearance and spread (to enable a collaborative settled agricultural economy where previously isolate tribes would collaborate) – as opposed to the isolation of Judaism, and,
Islam developed after Christianity as a militant method to retain pastoral nomadic control of lands being gradually developed within the agricultural economy. Islam is an ideology based around a pastoral nomadic economy and its fallow lands were being swalloed up by the rise of settled agricultural economy.

It could be a statistic straight from George Orwell’s chilling masterpiece 1984. State officials have 266 justifications to enter your home. Alas, the figure is not a figment of Orwell’s imagination but the reality of Britain in 2007. A study by the Centre for Policy Studies found that 25 new statutory powers to enter private properties had arisen since 2000, adding to the 120 granted legislative approval in the Eighties…-

  4. ET,
It’s secular humanism specifically that I think has the “I am God” approach.
It just seems to me, in the last few years, I’ve seen atheists presenting themselves publicly as secular humanists.
(although with a quick search, I see some online sources also say secular humanism and atheism are not the same…but….doesn’t a secular humanist have a belief that there is no God? They’re just trying to be a sexier version of atheist)
For instance, here in Calgary, you can count on the same “secular humanist” to be seeking publicity over his dislike of Nativity scenes at city hall and the such.

Three Christian murder victims were brutally tortured for hours before their death, Turkish media reports reveal. The Islamic zealots who attacked a Christian publishing house in the city of Malatya on April 18 prolonged the suffering of their victims by stabbing them repeatedly with dull knives, the media report. A Sabah newspaper story notes that one victim, the German missionary Tilman Geske, suffered 156 knife wounds. 8. “A federal private member’s bill that would grant the government new powers while imposing restrictions and penalties on internet users and operators is off base, internet experts say.
Joy Smith, a Conservative MP representing Kildonan-St. Paul, on Thursday introduced her proposed clean internet act, or Bill C-427, for first reading in Parliament.
The bill’s full name is: “An act to prevent the use of the internet to distribute child pornography, material that advocates, promotes or incites racial hatred, and material that portrays or promotes violence against women.”
The bill’s provisions would grant the industry minister special powers to search data as well as the ability to order an internet service provider to block access to content deemed inappropriate.”
    http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2007/04/20/tech-cleaninternetact-20070420.html
    A few points:
    -Child porn is already illegal.
-Promoting or inciting racial hatred is already illegal.
-It is implied that protraying promoting violence against men is OK, but not women. Consider the implications: posting a video of two men fighting on youtube would be legal, but a posting a video of two women fighting would be illegal.

  10. ET said “I do accept the idea of a powerful agental networked communal physical force.
Now- calm down – this force is not reductionist materialism.”…”The error that many people are making is that they separate Mind and Matter,…”
…and the error that many people make is separating intelligence and personality from this networked communal force.
We have evidence of restricted networking agents with personality and intelligence, that create and love – we call them “people”. The leap is not so great…
The alternative is either pantheism, which fails the test of logical coherence, or futility, which fails the test of experience.
I agree with you that organization is not random, nor accidental, but is a process of reason. But this does not just happen. It cannot. The informational interactions require generation, support, interaction (Parenthetically, this is why God is a trinity, explains providence, and asserts love).

  16. The main reason, for why I am an atheist is that I feel organized religions, particularly Islam, removes the responsibility of the individual for his/her actions and put it on some mythical god. The threats that begin as children that god will punish you if your bad and if you’re good and obey these rules you will go to heaven. Religion is about power, each major one and its myriad sects claim ours is the best and the only true path to god.
An invisible god has always been the advertisors dream. You can make it say whatever you want, interpret what is has supposed to have said, claim to be its only voice and it never responds to refute your claims.
Religion requires conformity. When it is weakened the ability of the individual to reason and express their thoughts is strengthened, which has led to our freedom of western civilization. The downside of this is the switching of belief in a god to belief in the state. Leftist intellectuals are the new priests. Once again responsiblity for one’s actions are being removed.
As Islam is in the forefront now we are getting an view of religion that most of us have never seen before. The most fiendish and unimaginable butchery committed in the name of religion and excused and accepted by that religion is frightening to say the least. As ET and others have so eloquently expressed many times individualism and intellectual freedom will disappear into this dead zone of absence of humanity.

Jihad and the Collapse of the Swedish Model
    islam watch
I decided to write this essay following the riots in Malmö this weekend. Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city and by far the worst city in Scandinavia when it comes to Muslim aggression. I read recently that an Arab girl interviewed in Malmö said that she liked it so much there, it felt almost like an Arab city.
Native Swedes have been moving away from the city for years, turned into refugees in their own country by Jihad, not too different from the non-Muslims in some regions of the Philippines, southern Thailand or Kashmir in India, or for that matter Christian Serbs in Kosovo.
Native Swedes have thus been reduced to just another ethnic group in Sweden, with no more claim to the country than the Kurds or the Somalis who arrived there last Thursday. The political authorities of the country have erased their own people’s history and culture.
Jens Orback, Minister for Democracy, Metropolitan Affairs, Integration and Gender Equality from the Social Democratic Party said during a debate in Swedish radio in 2004 that “We must be open and tolerant towards Islam and Muslims because when we become a minority, they will be so towards us.”
This is a government that knows perfectly well that their people will become a minority in their own country, yet is doing nothing to stop this. On the contrary. Pierre Schori, Minister for immigration, during a parliamentary debate in 1997 said that: “Racism and xenophobia should be banned and chased [away],” and that one should not accept “excuses, such as that there were flaws in the immigration and refugee policies.”
In other words: It should be viewed as a crime for the native population not to assist in wiping themselves out. …-

In writing about the utility of gun control, he writes, ” false is the idea of utility that sacrifices a thousands real advantages for one imaginary or trifling inconvenience’ that would take fire from men because it burns, and water because one may drown in it; that has no remedy for evils, except destruction. THAT businessman John Catsimatidis, who is running for mayor of New York, has come out in support of a bill protecting citizens who report possible terrorist-related activities.
In November 2006, passengers and the flight crew aboard a U.S. Airways flight notified authorities that six Muslim imams were acting suspiciously, praying loudly before boarding, talking about Saddam Hussein and moving between seats. The clerics were removed from the flight.
Last month the clerics filed suit against the airline and unnamed passengers who reported their activity, claiming they were targeted because of their religion and ethnicity.
Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., has introduced legislation giving legal protection to citizens who report suspicious activity. It has already passed the House.
Catsimatidis, billionaire chairman of the Red Apple Group — a private company with holdings that include the Gristedes supermarket chain — took out a full-page ad in Friday’s New York Post supporting King’s measure, calling the imams’ suit “a lawsuit that threatens our security.”
He called on the U.S. Senate to pass King’s bill, and urged the New York City Council to introduce a resolution in support of the bill.
The ad could boost Catsimatidis’ visibility as a mayoral candidate.

Ancient Mass Extinctions Caused by Cosmic Radiation, Scientists Say
Cosmic rays produced at the edge of our galaxy have devastated life on Earth every 62 million years, researchers say.
The finding suggests that biodiversity has been strongly influenced by the motion of the solar system through the Milky Way and of the galaxy’s movement through intergalactic space.
Mikhail Medvedev and Adrian Melott, both of the University of Kansas, presented their new theory at a meeting of the American Physical Society earlier this month.
The theory offers the first explanation for a mysterious pattern previously noted in the fossil record.
“There are 62-million-year ups and downs in the number of marine animals over the last 550 million years,” Melott said.
Until now, however, even the scientists who first discovered the cyclical pattern had not been able to explain it. (Read related story: “Mystery Undersea Extinction Cycle Discovered” [March 9, 2005].)
A number of possible explanations had been considered—including volcanic activity, comet impacts, and changes in sea level—but none could account for the phenomenon’s regularity.
The Kansas researchers discovered that high rates of extinction in the cycle coincide almost perfectly with periodic “excursions” of the solar system outside the central plane of the Milky Way galaxy.
“Excursions to galactic north coincide with drops in biodiversity,” Melott said.
During these periods, which include some of the largest mass extinctions known from the fossil record, Earth is bombarded with high levels of cosmic radiation. …-
