In an act of brazen political opportunism, Canadian government negotiations with the United Arab Emirates to join the fight against the Taliban have been made public;
The NDP, with the willing collaboration of the press, has engaged in an astonishing act of sabotage. Because they disagree with the government’s policy, and because they were presented with the opportunity by a careless government employee, they decided to pull the rug out from under this negotiation and undercut whatever chances it had of succeeding.

I used to have a limited amount of respect for the NDP. I NEVER agreed with any of their policies but the NDP of old at least had some small amount of tact and honour and love of their country.
The “new” NDP under Taliban Jack have become one of the most disgusting entities to grace the political scene since the Librano family. Yes, the NDP acted irresponsibly. The real point here is, any attempt to secure success in Afghanistan, more troops, equipment, partners, is seen as an “escalation.”
Obvious tactic. Fight tooth an nail any attempt to place proper resources, including reconstruction, in Afghan. Then lo and behold, announce the mission is a “failure,” so troops must come home.
The problem with this politicking is our troops ar being put in danger. It is unethical to maintain a plan of action is failing when you are doing your best to sabotage any chance at success.

THE NDP DID NOT BREAK THE LAW. For one, they obtained it under the Access to Information Act. For another, the ATI only protects CONFIDENTIAL discussions with foreign governments. Apparently, these were not, since the government itself chose to release the documents.
THE NDP DID NOT SCUTTLE THE NEGOTIATIONS. Read the article – the talks took place in January! Old news.

The processing of access to information requests must be a whole lot better than it is and with accountability formally required – particularly where it affects defense/law & order/security. How did we learn what should have remained ‘background’ talks between two soverign governments? Not surprisingly, through the loose lips of NDP MP Libby Davies, whose opposition to any kind of military action is greater than her allegiance to Canada and democracy.
According to the ‘Freedom of Information Act’, this material should (1) not have been released and (2) knowing that the information received was exempted under FOI, your member, Libby Davies, knowingly and willfully released the information to the press for public dissemination. She and you, must have known that it would be if not damaging, at least unhelpful in securing support for the Canadian military by another soverign nation. Characterizing this as a “Bush-style’ troop surge”, is a disgusting, inaccurate and willfully misleading slur. We are not committing more troops, we were inviting a coalition of Muslim led governments to join us in liberating and rebuilding Afghanistan through UN sanctioned and NATO led operations.

Also, the fact that the talks were in January is immaterial. Whose to say there are no more talks scheduled or that other parties are going to be approached? As the leader of a country who would like to keep any talks and discussions private, I’d certainly think twice at talking to a country that pastes everything on the front page.

Vancouver NDP MP LIbby Davies has released sensitive information between Canada and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) regarding a partnership to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan. Bombings in Bali, London, Madrid, Buenos Aires and other places around the world caused people to ask, “where are the voices of moderate Islam?” And now with an opportunity to engage Muslim based governments in the battle against militant Islamists, Libby Davies places her party and her ‘anti-military’ values against the safety of the Canadian Forces and the people of Afghanistan.
She then muddies the waters with a falsehood, calling these talks a “Bush-style troop surge”. Ms. Davies knows we are not increasing the Canadian presence, but are inviting Muslim based forces to join a UN sanctioned and NATO led operation against a cruel enemy. In a speech on March 12th, NDP leader Jack Layton said of Canadian government policy, “The same strategy that led us into Afghanistan has deepened a rift between the Muslim and Western worlds. A rift that we could have worked to bridge.” Why then, when the UAE and Canada were building a bridge to “Muslim and Western worlds”, would Ms. Davies deliberately attempt to destroy the initiative through pre-mature public disclosure? Is the NDP’s hatred of all things military greater than their love of Canada and any concern for the Afghani people? Is betrayal acceptable if the result is military, rather than more discussion? Is there a pattern here?
When coupled with last September’s resolution by the Nanaimo-Cowichan riding association (subsequently withdrawn) which accused Canada’s military of “acting like terrorists, destroying communities, killing and maiming innocent people” one might ask exactly where the NDP’s allegiances lie. They may not be pro-Taliban, but they appear to be out of step with Canadian values of freedom and democracy

New Democrat MP Libby Davies accused the Conservatives of trying to create a “Bush-style troop surge” in Afghanistan, referring to U.S. President George W. Bush’s plan to increase American troop strength in Iraq.
The fact Canada was in discussion with a country outside of NATO to commit militarily to the war in Afghanistan was both unusual and troubling, she said.

During Thursday’s debate in the House of Commons on Canada’s mission in Afghanistan, NDP members advocated the withdrawal of our troops as soon as possible and suggested that, rather than fighting the Taliban, the solution to the war is to negotiate with them. The NDP’s national defence critic, Dawn Black, quoted Sir Winston Churchill in support of this position: “To jaw-jaw is always better than to war-war.”
Ms. Black would seem to be unaware of Mr. Churchill’s statement after the 1938 Munich Agreement with Adolf Hitler: “Britain and France had to choose between war and dishonour. They chose dishonour. They will have war.”‘
As a friend said to me in a message, maybe Ms Black “…has a piece of paper from Herr Omar promising peace in our time? Besides Afghanistan is a little country that is very far away about which the NDP knows nothing.”

These were documents released by DND right? presumably an analyst or a lawyer would have flagged this document and brought it up at the weekly ATI meeting between the Minister’s office, the CDS and the DM. It isn’t just ATI staff that review these things, in every Department someone from the Minister’s office reviews each page before approving their release.
