Motor Corp.’s home turf. Several GM engineers and executives describe their experience at Panasonic EV Energy Co. Ltd., one of the top makers of hybrid-car batteries, as typical of the reception they received there:
When GM team members asked for detailed information about the company’s most sophisticated automotive lithium-ion batteries, Panasonic EV refused.
A Panasonic EV spokesman says that as a matter of company policy it only discloses that kind of information to its parent company, Toyota.
Facing growing pressure to curtail greenhouse-gas emissions, U.S. auto makers are increasingly worried that the critical battery technology they’ll need to compete is getting locked up by Japanese rivals who moved more quickly to develop gas-electric hybrid vehicles.

Lorraine, I read many years back that each Senator cost half a million per year, that was back in the 80’s.This was salary, pension benefits, travel allowance, office staff. Probably a lot higher now.
I believe they were contemplating increasing the number of Sens at the time. Thankfully, it never happened, and we’re only stuck with 108 unelected persons of questionable wisdom and ability.
I am asking all of my blogging friends to read the following email very carefully. I have always believe that in this country we had the freedom of speech. I also believed that we had the protection of the Charter of Rights. One other belief is that the rule of law was there for everyone regardless of race or religion, that we were all equal under the laws of Canada. One man and his wife took a stand and stood up for the people of Caledonia, a town that has lived under native seize for over a year now. The rule of law has not been enforced equally in this town and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms not enforced. Today, the OPP are using maffia style tactics (in my opinion)and have filed a $5.5 million suit against Gary McHale. They stand to loose everything.
If there every was a time that we could put this blogging world to work, this really could be the time to pull it together. Don’t kid yourself if you think that this can’t happen in your back yard either. When do we say enough is enough…. email from Gary McHale.
ps: Thank you Kate for allowing us to have a medium to vent our frustrations with the system….
For 9 months it has been repeated over and over that we can always go back to Richmond Hill leave the problems behind. Few have ever understood that we willfully put ourselves at risk to help
those we did not know. We have become the targets of Native anger and hatred, by every level of
Government, by the OPP, Fantino and the OPP association.
We have risked everything for people we didn’t know. We understood that we placed ourselves in the battle for our Country, for Freedom and for
Equality.
Today we received legal papers suing us for $5.5 million by OPP officers in Caledonia – papers are attached. We could lose everything and I am
sure we will experience many months of added stress because of this.
There is a Price for Freedom and a Price to fight for Freedom – few are willing to fight, fewer still to fight for the Freedom of others.
We will continue to fight.

What a shock. But some still wonder why the Conservatives have aligned themselves with a Pakistani political party that human rights groups and even Canadian officials say has a violent past. “The MQM has a long and well-deserved reputation for violence, extortion and other criminal acts such as murder,” said Tom Quiggin, a former RCMP terrorism expert now working at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. I dont remember the exact figure but it is a lot. The American bill is huge and they have refused to pay it a for couple of years . When America was put on the hot seat for not paying their dues the reply was something like ….if you can name one single thing the UN has ever accomplished we will reconsider paying what we owe.
I agree , the UN has turned out to be a useless debating society , very left wing and dangerous.
I find it interesting in recent years , the UN has considered moving it’s headquarters from New York to Babylon (Iraq) . Its been a while since I read The Book of Revelation but I think the end-times one world Government is based in Babylon , it sounds fitting the UN should be there as well.
Bridges was told by the specialist not to clean up the bulb and mercury powder by herself. He recommended the Clean Harbors Environmental Services branch in Hampden.
Clean Harbors gave Bridges a low-ball estimate of $2,000, based on what she described, to clean up the room properly. The work entailed removing anything with levels greater than 300 ng/m3, including the carpeting.
One month later, Bridges’ daughter’s bedroom remains sealed off with plastic “to avoid any dust blowing around” and to keep the family’s pets from going in and out of the room.

‘Peak oil’ doomsayers fall silent as reserves grow ever larger
OTTAWA — You will have noticed the marked decline these days in the number of “peak oil” people making cataclysmic pronouncements. Global oil production set records throughout 2006 — for all-time highest production day, month, quarter and year. For the single-year record, production reached 31.3 Gb (billion barrels), an average of 85.2 million barrels a day. Affirming the trend, production set a new global single-day record before the end of January, 2007.
Along with record-setting production came record-setting increases in reserves — moving “peak oil” deeper into the century and ultimately beyond.
The “peak oil” hypothesis, relentlessly propounded for decades, holds that the world has passed (or will momentarily pass) the highest point it can ever reach in oil production — at the halfway mark in the depletion of global oil resources. It holds that this imminent peak necessarily marks the start of an irreversible decline in production. It holds, in other words, that the end of oil is nigh. The principal problem is that the hypothesis is demonstrably wrong — and is vigorously proven wrong year after year. …- http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1816313/posts

The Heritage Ministry under the liberal leadership initiated a plan to give a way a million flags in 1996. The government under request for proposal requested companies to tender on supplieing these flags. The contract was awarded to an Ontario company, upon being awarded contract they were instructed by the federal government purchasing agent to deliver and bill flags to an advertising company owned by Jean Lafleur. Lafleur’s company allegedly marked up the bills by 17%? and billed the Federal government. There was little or no service provided by Lafleur’s company.
The company through the tender process dealt exclusively with the federal government. Only after being awarded the contract were they advised that they should deal with Lafleur’s company.

A British news paper salutes Canada . . . this is a good read. It is funny how it took someone in England to put it into words…
Sunday Telegraph Article From today’s UK wires: Salute to a brave and modest nation – Kevin Myers, The Sunday Telegraph LONDON –
Until the deaths of Canadian soldiers killed in Afghanistan , probably almost no one outside their home country had been aware that Canadian troops are deployed in the region. And as always, Canada will bury its dead, just as the rest of the world, as always will forget its sacrifice, just as it always forgets nearly everything Canada ever does.
It seems that Canada ‘s historic mission is to come to the selfless aid both of its friends and of complete strangers, and then, once the crisis is over, to be well and truly ignored.
Canada is the perpetual wallflower that stands on the edge of the hall, waiting for someone to come and ask her for a dance. A fire breaks out, she risks life and limb to rescue her fellow dance-goers, and suffers serious injuries. But when the hall is repaired and the dancing resumes, there is Canada, the wallflower still, while those she once helped Glamorously cavort across the floor, blithely neglecting her yet again.
That is the price Canada pays for sharing the North American continent with the United States , and for being a selfless friend of Britain in two global conflicts. For much of the 20th century, Canada was torn in two different directions: It seemed to be a part of the old world, yet had an address in the new one, and that divided identity ensured that it never fully got the gratitude it deserved. Yet its purely voluntary contribution to the cause of freedom in two world wars was perhaps the greatest of any democracy.
Almost 10% of Canada ‘s entire population of seven million people served in the armed forces during the First World War, and nearly 60,000 died. The great Allied victories of 1918 were spearheaded by Canadian troops, perhaps the most capable soldiers in the entire British order of battle.
Canada was repaid for its enormous sacrifice by downright neglect, it’s unique contribution to victory being absorbed into the popular Memory as somehow or other the work of the “British.”
The Second World War provided a re-run. The Canadian navy began the war with a half dozen vessels, and ended up policing nearly half of the Atlantic against U-boat attack. More than 120 Canadian warships participated in the Normandy landings, during which 15,000 Canadian soldiers went ashore on D-Day alone. Canada finished the war with the third-largest navy and the fourth-largest air force in the world.
The world thanked Canada with the same sublime indifference as it had the previous time. Canadian participation in the war was acknowledged in film only if it was necessary to give an American actor a part in a campaign in which the United States had clearly not participated – a touching scrupulousness which, of course, Hollywood has since abandoned, as it has any notion of a separate Canadian identity.
So it is a general rule that actors and filmmakers arriving in Hollywood keep their nationality – unless, that is, they are Canadian. Thus Mary Pickford, Walter Huston, Donald Sutherland, Michael J. Fox, William Shatner, Norman Jewison, David Cronenberg, Alex Trebek, Art Linkletter and Dan Aykroyd have in the popular perception become American, and Christopher Plummer, British.
It is as if, in the very act of becoming famous, a Canadian ceases to be Canadian, unless she is Margaret Atwood, who is as unshakably Canadian as a moose, or Celine Dion, for whom Canada has proved quite unable to find any takers.
Moreover, Canada is every bit as querulously alert to the achievements of it’s sons and daughters as the rest of the world is completely unaware of them. The Canadians proudly say of themselves – and are unheard by anyone else – that 1% of the world’s population has provided 10% of the world’s peacekeeping forces. Canadian soldiers in the past half century have been the greatest peacekeepers on Earth – in 39 missions on UN mandates, and six on non-UN peacekeeping duties, from Vietnam to East Timor, from Sinai to Bosnia.
Yet the only foreign engagement that has entered the popular on-Canadian imagination was the sorry affair in Somalia , in which out-of-control paratroopers murdered two Somali infiltrators. Their regiment was then disbanded in disgrace – a uniquely Canadian act of self-abasement for which, naturally, the Canadians received no international credit.
So who today in the United States knows about the stoic and selfless friendship its northern neighbour has given it in Afghanistan? Rather like Cyrano de Bergerac , Canada repeatedly does honourable things for honourable motives, but instead of being thanked for it, it remains something of a figure of fun.
It is the Canadian way, for which Canadians should be proud, yet such honour comes at a high cost. This past year more grieving Canadian families knew that cost all too tragically well.
*********************
Please pass this on to any of your friends or relatives who served in the Canadian Forces or anyone who is proud to be Canadian; it is a wonderful tribute to those who choose to serve their country and the world in our quiet Canadian way.

Will Iraq Be the Next Rwanda?
By Stuart Gottlieb
Sunday, April 15, 2007; B07
Remember Rwanda? The history books have not treated kindly America’s inaction while more than 800,000 Tutsis were slaughtered by their Hutu compatriots in the spring of 1994 after a plane crash killed the presidents of Rwanda and Burundi.
Now consider a scenario in which the decisions and actions of the United States were the primary reasons for a country’s descent into chaos and sectarian violence, yet instead of doing everything possible to avert a humanitarian catastrophe, America chose to walk away. What would the history books say about that?
Should the Democratic leadership in Congress succeed in forcing the hasty withdrawal of American forces from Iraq, we may well find out.

Time to get StatsCan off salt
William Watson, Financial Post
Published: Saturday, April 14, 2007
When Tuesday morning’s email version of Statistics Canada’s “The Daily” brought news of a new study of Canadians’ intake of salt–we consume too much, is anyone surprised?–I immediately thought of Lee Kuan Yew. Mr. Lee, the former prime minister of Singapore, home to one of the world’s most spectacularly successful economies, once argued that governments should collect as little economic data as possible because that way they wouldn’t be tempted to try to control the economy…
…In selling his caucus colleagues on cuts to StatCan, Mr. Bernier said, he told them that many statistics were mainly of benefit to bureaucrats. If bureaucrats discovered how much or little of this or that Canadians had or did, they’d dream up a program to encourage or discourage it, as the case may be. But if we starve bureaucrats of the data they breathe, they won’t be able to abuse it, or us. Shades of Lee Kuan Yew…

Liberals are launching attack ads against Stephan Dion, in both official languages, in print, TV, and radio. The Conservative party will now withdraw their ads saving the party 225 thousand dollars. A letter of thanks has been sent to the Liberals by John Reynolds, campaign chair for the Conservative party.
Reynolds remarked that, at what has become known as ‘the odd couple’ news conference, when Dion said Liberals “will offer to Canadians a gesture of cooperation ” he didn’t expect Dion would be so charitable and include the Conservative party, by his newly discovered political actions and strategy. Reynolds used Dion’s own words “It’s really something exceptional ” and we only hope that Dion and the Liberal party continue this spirit of co-operation and keep on giving.
The 2007 Escape Hybrid in front-wheel drive form is the most fuel-efficient SUV on the market. As such, it is one of just three current model-year vehicles to qualify for the federal government’s maximum $2,000 EcoAuto incentive.

The 2008 Escape Hybrid is even more fuel-frugal.
That improvement should qualify the new 4WD model for the full $2,000 rebate as well. Its 2007 counterpart is eligible for a $1,500 incentive.
Those incentives should help offset the price of the Escape Hyrbid, which is listed as $31,499 for the FWD version and $33,899 for the 4WD version.

Gary McHale

As an activist, I can tell you this is the right thing to do.

Which party was in control of the White House in 1994? Who was President of the US in 1994?

Can anyone comment on whether Stephen Harper’s French is better than Stephane Dion’s English? I always thought Harper’s French was pretty decent, but someone I know claimed that his French was probably no better than Dion’s English, so just curious………
Harper’s accent isn’t great, but his understanding of French grammar is infinitely better than Dion’s understanding of English grammar. I’m sure Dion is taking advantage of free English lessons so it will be interesting to see if he improves.
I wonder if by recycling family members as liberal candidates it is a sign of dion’s committment to the environment, or that once at the public trough, those liberals can’t give it up. David Collenette’s wife will be the lib candidate in Ottawa.
First dion starts the red/green party, then gets the wives of former lib cabinet ministers to run.
If they win, it will take a lot less time for them to learn where to steal from.

Judge for yourself.
Expect a bulletin by the Public Relations chairman of the Liberal party Keith Boag, on CBC later today, on fallout of the Dion-May lovefest – but you heard it here first.
Well, that sure was some Happy-Headed Ho.
The 2007 Escape Hybrid in front-wheel drive form is the most fuel-efficient SUV on the market. As such, it is one of just three current model-year vehicles to qualify for the federal government’s maximum $2,000 EcoAuto incentive.
Toyota’s Prius and Honda’s Civic hybrid also qualify.
For those who may worry about the longevity of such relatively new technology, the Hybrid’s CVT, battery pack, and electronic power controller are covered by a special eight-year, 160,000 km warranty. More at TheStar.com = TG
