  4. Canadian Tire crapped out in the U.S. market when it bought White Stores in 1982. (It bailed out of White three years later.) A successful takeover of Chrysler may turn Magna into “Magma.” So, Belinda may be leaping from one pool of quicksand to another.

    Hardly – she was never much more than a PR figure at Magna. As I recall it, when she was announced as CEO her dad made it clear to the Magna board that he’d still be making the big decisions.

    A- are you saying that during her time as an elected MP, Belinda rejected her salary and benefits – presumably because she doesn’t need it because of her father’s money?
    B- are you saying that her current announcement that she is leaving politics, is a ‘remarkable and decent act of voluntarily giving up that MP’s salary and benefits’?
    Which is it? If it’s A, she hardly needs the money; she lives off her father. If it’s B, then leaving politics before being ousted in an election is hardly a remarkable and decent act. It’s a practical action – getting out before the electorate kicks you out. And, she still is funded by her father.
    So- which is it?

    I won’t however miss the chicanery, we have thus far witnessed.

Nevertheless, she declares that “Canada’s political class must now act. The challenges demand a level of political engagement, commitment and leadership well beyond what has been done to date by any federal government.” Lower the lifeboats….

    Oh, really?
    Actually, no. First, she did not give up her salary; taxpayers are still shelling out. Her salary goes into a trust fund, whose details I have not been able to ascertain. Second, I do not believe she gave up her benefits – this is legally difficult.
    Second, our elected representatives should be well paid for their work, both in recognition of it, and to prevent temptation. For a wealth person such as Stronach to implicitly cheapen the work of her colleagues by a publicity stunt is a sign of weak character.
    It was all about power, not money.

For me, the most interesting part of Stronach’s political career was that she was taken so seriously by the media, despite her jaw droppingly obvious lack of political talent and meager accomplishments. Remember her run for the Conservative Party’s leadership? The speech to the convention? Her constant repeating of canned answers to every semi serious question put to her? The lady was a poltical zero from the word go, and quite obviously so, but the mantra we kept hearing from the media was that she a consequential person.
    Stronach’s vanity and mediocrity were of a common type that require no great analysis or condemnation. The people who deserve the biggest arse kicking are the media who insisted she mattered and kept giving her a platform on which she could make a fool of herself- and them.

    Tenebris/ET: Holy crap, guys. Relax a bit. It was just a response to the wrong claim that she was leaving because she wasn’t being paid enough. It was a decent thing to do frankly, donate her money to charity. How that cheapens the work of other MPs is beyond me.
    And if you ask me, MPs aren’t paid enough and so a lot of talented individuals/leaders end up not going into politics. Which is one reason why we end up with crappy career politicians and pundits who have never had a real job running the place, like our current PM and all of the opposition leaders. None of them have spent any time in the real world and it shows. Like Belinda, tenegris, it becomes for them all about power.

E.g., PMSH is the most principled, dignified, mature, and effective prime minister Canada’s had in many a decade. Too bad Ted can’t see it.

  36. Ted – you are implicitly suggesting that other MPs should also donate their salary to charity. Why? Can all of them afford to do that? Are you saying that our MPs must all be people whose families are wealthy and will support them?
    I would think that a remarkable act by an MP would be to make a significant intellectual contribution to our governance. Belinda hasn’t done that.
    I would think that a decent act by an MP would be to behave with integrity. Belinda hasn’t done that.
    So how does not spending her salary because she is funded, not by her own work, but by her rather – how does that show ‘remarkable and decent actions’?
    The only reason Belinda doesn’t need her salary is because of her father’s money. Not her work. She has no talents, no brains, no expertise, no education, not knowledge. Just her father’s money.
    How is that remarkable and decent?

    After the stunts pulled by the previous Liberal government, there is nowhere to go but up in terms of Parliamentary decorum. Historians will look upon the 13 year tenure of the Liberals as one that wrested absolute power into the PMO, subverted democracy through illegal money laundering used to fight for their re-election, and culminated by blatantly ignoring the will of the House. Centuries of Westminster tradition were casually sidestepped by ignoring a confidence vote, and the obvious purchase of Ms. Stronach’s vote sealed any legitimacy this party may have once held. One step above WWE wrestling in fact.
    I could *begin* to rationalize all of this if it were apparent that the Liberals were taking steps to eliminate the rot within.
    They haven’t.

    I said that PMSH is:
    Principled: His stand on Israel and staying the course in Afghanistan, to cite only two instances. Unlike the Liberals, he hasn’t based policy–he actually HAS policy–on spun polls and how they’ll line the pockets of his cronies.
    Dignified/Mature: He doesn’t hog the stage or yammer on like the Liberals did ad nauseum. I’ve never heard him call Dion a name. But I hear Dion making negative ad hominem comments and sounding just like a schoolyard wimp–or bully–all the time. PMSH always looks and sounds–unlike Mr. Dithers and Jean “Crouton”–prime ministerial and his speeches actually say something of substance. He holds his counsel and, when ready, makes his moves decisively. The Liberals were always full of sound and fury, signifying nothing, but smoke and mirrors for all their shady dealings.
    Effective: Just as any citizen can do, I receive the PM’s press releases and speeches on a daily basis–direct communication, not spun like the Liberals’ messages always were. I like what I see. I guess I can say that I TRUST PMSH, a man with smarts and guts, a feeling I never had for the LIEberals. Why not? Because it’s a hackneyed party of bagmen, old boys, and worse, who’ve both betrayed and swindled the citizens of this country.
    On the other hand, PMSH and his government haven’t deceived, covered up, and STOLEN millions of dollars from the Canadian taxpayer. Nor does the Conservative government buy into the very destructive “divide and conquer” Charter–e.g., gender, race, etc.–politics foisted on the country by the Liberals.
    As I’ve noted, political dyslexia will distort perception. I think Ted needs a new prescription for his glasses.

  50. Well DUDLEY, you are entitled to your opinion, however a senior VP’s job is not just fluff and posturing. She’s in a position that could potentially affect the future of Magna in many and diverse ways.
    She’s Daddy’s girl and Daddy ain’t gonna be around forever.
    I’ve been moderately successful over the past many years by knowing who is ultimately in charge of my investments.
    I’m gonna take a pass on Magna for now.
