It’s Not How you Play the Game: It’s Whether you Win or Lose

Mark Burnell (author) ~ “The most valuable commodity of all is time and … patience is control. The reason time is so valuable is that it’s the one resource the poor have in abundance and the rich can’t buy. The West worries about the next financial quarter [or next election]; in Iraq or Afghanistan or wherever there are many poor – that’s not a pressing concern. So when dealing with the West this is what they understand; that if they wait long enough they will prevail by default.”

“If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,”
This famous poem by Rudyard Kipling from 1895 incorporates an unusual amount of Asian wisdom (with a zen-like embrace of paradox) for something written by a Westerner, but Kipling did work and travel extensively in India and Asia. It can be used as a source of aphorisms useful as Go meta-proverbs….-

  2. Psychological endurance is indeed a crucial factor in warfare, and most especially in the low-intensity protracted warfare that counter-terrorism requires. The ancient Greeks viewed warfare as a normal, constant state of affairs, almost a background noise of normal life. While peace is a more desireable state of affairs, peace at any price most certainly is not and at any event the jihadis show no indication of giving us any even if we back away from the hot spots. It would simply free up their resources to direct their efforts more intensely at our homelands. So we’d better steel our resolve for the long haul. This ain’t going away any time soon.

  3. I’ve said it before and I say it again.
Time is the only truly finite resource there is.

An interesting thought DrD, and we can certainly draw more lessons from the ancient Greeks. They invented a very unique element of warfare, unseen before then, the decisive battle. They fought where they stood, and fought hard, to the finish. A wall of spears, armor, and flesh, unwilling to withdraw an inch until the battle was won or lost.
The Greeks, the Romans, and almost all westerners after used the decisive battle to great effect, thoroughly defeating all easterners in any stand and fight conflict. However, on many notable occasions the easterners would not play by the western decisive battle rules, and to great effect. The Parathions, the Huns, the Mongols, and ancient Muslims all learned ways of avoiding western head on might at one time or another.
Which begs the question, will the current east-west conflict ultimately favor western might or eastern asymmetry?

  5. uh wrong !! it IS ‘how you play the game’.
Im totally uninterested in supporting the opportunistic white house haliburton whoaa-how-did-this-one-get-so-expensive gang under the guise of ‘war on terror’. thats worse than ‘global warming’. MORE casualties than the original twin towers attack and no end in sight. costs TEN TIMES what was the original sales pitch and no end in sight.
‘stay the course’ sayeth the republicanists.
as long as it aint THEIR kid getting blown up in suicide bombings. george dubya hypocricy bush yessiree. poll the entire godam congress both sides of the house and FIND OUT how many have a close famly member in uniform on the front lines.
Ive got more than enough will to take on islamism but I am NOT going to shelve all my principles to do it the guano- gauntanimo way of locking them up without charges, counsel and scant visitation priviliges for YEARS. dubya is a godam mobster boss and a squawking parrot frat bot whut lucked in daddy.

  6. Robert: Shelving all your principles has nothing to do with this; nor has anyone suggested it. But in the end, you must win, that’s the point.

  7. “You can’t handle the truth!” Great line from a mediocre movie!
The Robertbollocks of the world are getting in the way of real men doing real work!

  8. Some clown (Amir Attaran ) in TO sqwaking about 3 telaban captives that were turned over to Afghan Police have dissapeared. Next question. Who gives a sh@# stupid, it’s a war, they “WERE” the enemy.
Where do these idiot acidemics get the right to tell our soldiers how to fight a war.

  9. robert: “as long as it aint THEIR kid getting blown up”
Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain has a Son going to Iraq. McCain suggested the troop surge knowing he would be going.

well mr ommag, except for the above cited John McCain, who else on EITHER side of congress dispatched their kid(s) to iraq? c’mon oh dubya groupies, how many ??? Im waaaaaaiting !!!
it aint rich kids ‘doin’ the real work’ over there eh?
and very expensive work it is too; no retorts from the bushists regarding the TEN TIMES cost overrun. nope. the ol’ silent treatment on that still.
the zenith of hypocricy to send the kids from less advantageous sector of society to do the dirty work. and do the dying for what?? what TOTAL REAL DIFFERENCE has the american presence made so far that cant be taken back in an equal length of time once they tire and leave? or maybe they wont leave for a looooong looooong time. in which case the rumsfeld deception-or-error is exposed.
“and its one two three what are we fightin for”
“dont ask me now dont give a damn”
    “next stop is vietnam”
    “and its five six seven”
    “open up the pearly gates”
“aint no time to wonder why”
    “whoopie we’re all gonna die”.
same old same old. do as I say dont do as I do.
one measly congressman kid out of how many? 3-400? wow!!! what an inspiration !!! how exemplary !!!
and THAT one is the kid of a war hero…. eyeing the white house. curious.
paaaaaul !!! shelving principles is EXACTLY what the bushists have done. what they did in guanotanimo bordered on a war crime, even their OWN republican slanted supreme court condemned the protracted abuse. and still dubya refused to budge.
win by cheating. the new american way. like cummuniiiiists locking up everyone under the sun that maybe might possibly be considered a potential threat to ‘national security’. no wonder their cystem foundered, all the talented ones that need to think outside the box to promote advancements and innovations, wound up in the gulag. the rest were cowed into silence.
same thing with the precious patriot act that few bothered to read before it passed. cowed into silence or sumptin. maybe theyre half illiterate like ol’ georgie. cripes, 300,000,000 and they gotta pick someone that cant even get the old colloquialism right?
bush is a godam puppet and no way in hooting hades I would stick my neck out for the likes of THAT goofball.
