    Mukhtar Mai’s story is as horrific as it is simple, and it is quickly told. On June 22, 2002, the council of her tiny village, on the southern fringes of the Punjab in Pakistan, ordered that she be gang raped as a punishment for an offence supposedly committed by her 12-year-old brother.
    At gunpoint she was taken into a stable. Her clothes were ripped off and she was violated by four village elders. The ordeal lasted about half an hour and, when it was over, she was dragged out, semi-naked, in front of all the village men. Her father covered her with a shawl and carried her home.
    Mukhtar, who is also known as Mukhtaran Bibi, should then have killed herself. That was the custom. But such was her sense of outrage and injustice that she refused to commit suicide; and that act of defiance started a sequence of events that turned her into an international cause célèbre, who was first praised and then condemned by Pakistan’s president, Gen Pervez Musharraf. …-

  8. Global sunday morning news announced a series of negative, attack ads re dion will be aired to counter all the pro dion stuff in the media. They will air on the Super Bowl next week. Nothing like guaranteeing an audience. How will all the head honchos react if these ads just show dion putting his foot in his mouth. What if attacking dion they just tell the truth, an unknown thing in the msm.

I guarantee it will not be in Alberta, will she run in a very safe liberal or ndp riding with an incumbent running, will she find one of the 25 liberal ridings that the sitting member is quitting. And, if she should win, what could she do as a lone member except join the ndp. What will her european bosses tell her.

  15. Anyone been over to read the story on the new AD campaign being launched by the conservatives. I was right, they are using clips of the leadership debate on the environment. 118 comments, most condemming them as attack ads. Some are bringing up the ads run by Martin last election. Those poor liberals, just can’t stand to see or hear the truth. Oh, who saw giggles and iggy today, I didn’t, but one person said that giggles actually blushed and iggy was very condesending. Watch the superbowl, the ads will appear there, paid for by conservative party money, not stolen money. Seems one can only spend so much on an election, and the conservatives have exceeded raising that amount, so have money for ad campaigns. Bet the liberal wish they had the same.

    Yeah, isn’t it sad that so much time, money, and effort, has been wasted on such worthless bunk? I mean, it’s no worse in intent than all the time, effort, and money wasted on things like “Bigfoot research” and “proving” that the Apollo moon landing was faked, but these religious “studies” were conducted on a much larger scale, meaning a hell of a lot more money has been wasted on that than on any of the numerous conspiracy theories and nonsense claims floating around.
    We have practically gotten to a point where it would be possible to introduce a subject called The Science of Religion.
    Hah! Good one! I’ll get right on that, just as soon as I finish publishing my groundbreaking new book – The Dryness of Water.

  17. CTV ran the story re the attack ads. I saw the piece while on a plane — with numerous distractions, but my impression was that there was a cursory reference to the ads, clip of Ignatieff complaining about the Conservatives dismantaling Liberal initiatives and then, a LENGTHY rebuttle to the ads taken directly from Dion’s Web site. I was absolutely appalled. This was not a news piece, it was free broadcasting time for the Liberal Party. I don’t mind making people aware of the rebuttle, noting one or two key points — that’s fair, but not bothering to review points made by the Conservatives while devoting considerable time for Dion to air his views indicates a serious bias in favour of the Liberals. At this point, I am disgusted with CTV — it is not the first example of clearly unbalanced reporting — I do not intend to be watching this station in the future.
