  1. Sounds very hard to believe. I’m not even sure they had the knowledge/technology to do such surgeries back then (what with the connection of nerves etc). And what about rejection of the puppy head by the mastiff’s body as it’s immune system detects foreign cells?
“After six days, the bizarre hybrid died.”
    Oh. That explains it.

  2. There must be something wrong with me – I’m not creeped out. Interesting, though, quoting from the article: “they waited in the bright winter sunshine […] only the sound of birdsong and the rustling of leaves filled the air.” Apparently the Russians also learned how to transplant leaves onto frozen trees.
Let’s see, the Daily Mail, right, they’re the one read by “the wives of the people who run the country” – youtube.com/watch?v=cxdMFRwztl4

  3. I’m in favor of any technology/science that would facilitate grafting the heads of the likes of Al Qaeda, etc onto the bodies of lame donkeys.

  4. Bizarre indeed, but plausible. I suspect the incentive for this research, in the Soviet Union at least, may have arisen from Stalin’s fear of death and his overwhelming desire to avoid it — well described by Robert Conquest in his biography of Stalin. The techniques for grafting had been well established during WWII and the Red Army’s medical system was one of the more enlightened and progressive features of the Stalinist system. The major obstacle to transplantation was tissue rejection, an obstacle not practically overcome until the development of effective immunosuppressive drugs. This would fit with the dogs’ death after six days.

  5. Creeped out, I am. It also made me think about that Steve Martin comedy, The Man with Two Brains. Miss Uhhhhmahlmuhey and Dr. Haavaaaaaahhhrr..
However, this story sounds like it could be true and is very disturbing. I found it even more so since I recently went to Bodies: The Exhibition, which is a combined science/art exhibition that features real human bodies–and their parts. Incredible not only how complicated the body is but how all of its systems combine to keep it working day in and day out. After seeing that, I have made some changes to the way I eat, as well as how much exercise and sleep I get. Yes-I am still eating the chips and chocolate and other crap–but not as much and not as often.

  6. Yes very creepy indeed! Film herehttp://www.tvdata.ru/catalog.php?dir=11&did=365&lang=eng

  7. I think the next logical step would be grafting Donald Trumps head onto Rosie O’Donnell’s body.

  8. Man”s playing around at being God again….As if things weren’t complicated enough already.
You know; we’re never gonna get ahead if we don’t learn to stop setting ourselves up for massive litigation, thereby making lawyers and judges obscenely wealthy to the point where their brains swell with importance and they wantta tell us all how to live and what to think and God forbid; what is for our own good.
And besides can you imagine in our immoral society what it would be like for a child to have two daddys, three mommies and a Frankenstein for legal parents?
    Yow…the show goes on.
And as a final point, just what is so bad with dying? After all no one remembers what it was like before they were born.
