Bad Optics

This was the view out my windshield for much of today.

Looks like the SGEU picked a bad day to quit plowing snow.
Jan 9 Update – with a blizzard forecast for much of the top half of the province, CUPE is putting snowplow drivers back out on the road. Good call, folks.

  1. hell, looks like global warming to me.
But at least it’s flat . . one of my regular drives . .

  2. What were you doing out in such weather, Kate?
‘Ran out of dog food? Only necessary operations should be undertaken on next-to-no-visibility highways…

  3. I left yesterday around 5 am to meet friends from Wisconsin just north of the border (near Alameda). We don’t have any US live cargo service to Saskatchewan, so they were coming up to pick up three dogs who were with me over Christmas to be bred.
Stayed overnight at Arcola, and headed home this morning – I hope it wasn’t as bad going south for them as it was going north for me.
I think they were a little intimidated by the cold and snow already.

  4. Scientists say 2007 is going to be the warmest year on record, blah blah blah……………..

  5. all the “climate change” knowitalls with any street cred are from Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver.
meanwhile the Average prairie rez deals with this…

  6. Lousy drive for you Kate.
That’s why I question my sanity each winter at still living in Alberta. And then I feel smug at how tough I am. 😉
Did you by chance see my hot tub cover? Or my lattice blowing past?

  7. Ya ain’t seen nothing yet – worst blizzard since 89 to hit on Wed – tie those puppies down Kate!!

  8. Every once in a while I’m brought up short and am reminded “oh yeah, Kate lives in Canada.”
Kate, would you care to either confirm or deny the rumor that your breeding program enlists the assistance of piped-in Barry White records along with a shot of Merlot in the water dish?

  9. Looked all over and can’t find out how much snow plow drivers make, are they drastically underpaid?
Even the SGEU site is nothing but vague generalities, the usual PS Union rhetoric.
The snowplowers strike is a safety issue, they should be legislated back to work.
Don’t wish for privatization, we have that here in B.C., and the service leaves a great deal to be desired. Try the Coquihalla Connector on a Sunday in winter, it’s barely passable.
Essential service employees simply should not have the right to strike. We didn’t when I first joined government service here, and we were reasonably paid, and fairly well treated by the employer.
Our problems began when British labor agitators infiltrated our union, bringing an attitude of “them vs us”. It was all downhill from there.
Be careful on those highways, Kate, and everybody, it looks bloody dangerous.

  10. Global warming will continue to be a problem as long as the temperature in Toronto is higher than Vancouver, more votes for global warming there.
Its nice that everyone that complains about medicare and the post office things the gubmint can fix the weather.

  11. nasty wheather for sure but the department of holidays didn’t have any salt trucks out so nothing stuck to the pavement….stay on strike till spring, my semi and i don’t care.

  12. PS. saw a commercial for Rick Mercer using Stephane Dion and Kyoto.
Mercer tosses a stick and Dion runs after it.
Stephane running is about as good as his English, halting and stiff.

  13. Gee, it looks like the North Pole where you live.
Here, it’s like Vancouver, all the way on the opposite coast. Hardly any snow. Not much cold so far this winter.
It’s weird. But I’ve decided to take my chances with all-seasons and save hundreds on the cost of winter rubber. What’s the point, I figure?
I have an idea how the “assisted” breeding goes. I’ve seen them do it with horses.
I mean, we’re talking hardcore animal triple-x here… not for the faint of heart!
And I’m glad I don’t have to “assist” in the breeding… but I’m sure you can “handle” it just fine, K!

  14. I said something once about doing an AI, and was asked – with a straight face – “how do you AI a dog?”
I replied, “How do you think?
Dog people say the nastiest things out loud without even thinking about it. I suppose we should consider using hockey metaphors ….
    “So how did he do?”
“Not bad. Two goals and an assist…”
    Or a fishing metaphor… “catch and release”…
This would have the makings of a blog post, but I don’t need to give the lefties that much ammunition.

  15. Plowboys drive me nuts. You see them out cruising for drifts on days when there are none, and plowing lightly when they can find one. That means they get a do-over tomorrow. I expect they’re of the conviction that they better spend every dime possible so that next year will see a budget increase.

  16. More of that global warming I see. In Edmonton we expect a real cold snap into the -40 range with wind chill.
But if Tornoto is warm, so must the whole world be. Thus far though, we have had a normaly cold winter .Only Ontario & the East coast counts as the world barometer I guess?
To much Hollywood , to little sense with buckets of hysteria.

  17. The fishing metaphor I understand.
However, the fish I caught after moving out East turned out to be small fraction of the size of what I caught in Sask, so I sometimes ended up accidentally choking the life out of the poor tiny buggers even though I would release ’em…
I suppose that could be a metaphor for a failed breeding attempt…
Wonder if they have the little blue pills for doggies, just in case?

  18. Here in N.S., it’s 13C and raining at 10 pm. I did have a couple inches of snow for a while today, but it’s all gone now.

  19. You lucky B*
I am dying to try out my new 4X4 in Ontario, bu i am still wearing a tee-Shirt.
    Arrrggghhh

  20. Howard, I am not trying to be sarcastic but it is not fog you see in the pictures but drifting snow.
Green grass at this time of year in the upper MW wow.

  21. I hope you weren’t the one driving! Looks like the type of weather that requires two hands on the wheel, and two eyes on the road!

  22. I don’t want to give leftists any ammunition either.
I’ll forego a thousand comments about dog breeding.
I’ll simply suggest that one possibility would be for you to alert the SDA audience when a breeding program is finished.
    A quickly typed “mission accomplished.”
And all the many thousands of us out here could lean back and have a cigarette. To demonstrate my positive reaction, I’ll be smoking a Lucky Strike.

  23. Greg, I’m worried that “Mission Accomplished” might be a little too reminiscent of “Stay the Course” to incite such celebration for most of us.

  24. All this dog talk reminded me that Belinda Stronach’s bark is worse than her bite.

  25. One good thing about weather like that is the deer tend to stay sheltered down in the bluffs. From looking at the angle of those pictures, I think they were taken from the drivers seat. Meaning somebody was using their knees to steer.

  26. At least the snow filled the pot holes…
sorry that might have been a cheap shot.
(My wife and I survived the Cabri to Leader Hwy 32 drive last fall. Luckily I drive the big Mercedes, anything smaller than that or a pickup truck wouldn’t have made it. Thought about suing the Sask. government for labeling that goat trail as a highway on the provincial road map, but I didn’t break anything.)

  27. Don’t forget the SGEU’s motto “you can count on us” to (insert italian salute)(no insult to Italians meant).

  28. I miss snow! My kids really want to make a snowman. Hard to do when the grass is still growing. I am not blaming Global Warming, just pointing out the difference between S. Ontario and Saskatchewan!

  29. Yeah, Slider, I miss snow too. Finally, we’ve got a skim of ice on our pond which means I can stop daily dredging it for fallen leaves…
My kids are away from home now, so snowman building isn’t on our agenda anymore. But on December 24, passing a house in the neighbourhood, I saw a guy dumping a load of snow onto the grass in front of a festively decorated house. I wondered what was up.
A few hours later, passing the same house, I was delighted to see a SNOWMAN, carrot nose, scarf, hat and all standing proudly–defiantly–on its green carpet. I couldn’t helped smiling and almost beeped my horn in celebration. A sweet moment, and what a great gift for the kids.
Then it rained and rained. A few days later, the snowman resembled only a stalagmite, but was nevertheless a reminder of White Christmases past.
    Sigh.

  30. What a great idea ‘been around the block’! I will have to remember that for next year. I live 2 minutes from an arena. They have lots of snow out back!! The question is, who will loan me their pick-up…hmmmm??

  31. Ural said: “Crabgrass,
You now speak for “most of us”?”
Yes. Most of us speak for most of us, in fact.
But seriously, if you associate “mission accomplished” and “stay the course” with good news, I do expect that you’re in the minority.
My apologies for politicizing the thread.
