Good riddance;

‘Kingsley should have been fired years ago,” says NCC vice president Gerry Nicholls. “He was not a disinterested bureaucrat. Kingsley had an ideological axe to grind and he used his powers to go after groups he didn’t like.’

This column by Colby Cosh “Does America need a Foreign Legion?” might make for compelling argument – if it weren’t undermined by the facts. (link fixed) Update: more factual rebuttal in the comments.
“The AP and E&P have teamed up to perpetuate a lie.”
Senator Joe Lieberman has returned from Iraq;

[L]et there be no doubt: If Iraq descends into full-scale civil war, it will be a tremendous battlefield victory for al-Qaeda and Iran. Iraq is the central front in the global and regional war against Islamic extremism.

Aw, shucks, Jason. 🙂

  2. mazbot:
Which “lies and half-truths” would those be? Are you suggesting that the previous Progressive Conservative party has nothing to do with the current one? Or that Mulroney has no influence on the current party?
Just because you don’t like something doesn’t make it a lie.

  3. Mulroney has not the sway that Lie-beria suggests, nor does the former PC Party. Mulroney, like all Power Corp. hacks, cannot keep his meddling ways from spilling forth. PD and Power Corp.’s mission is to try to control the gubmint by proxy. One only has to look at the list of power Corp. allumni, starting with Uncle Mo.

  4. Story in todays Lethbride Herald, that the cpr and cn must pay within 30 days, some 4 million dollars to a special fund, because they exceeded their cap on grain freight rates. Wouldn’t it be great if this 4M was reinbursed to the farmers, who they overcharged on freight rates.
So, Harper can appoint a new RCMP commissioner, head of the CBC, head of Elections Canada, and a new CWB head is in place.
The opposition can’t bitch about his appointments, as they said the person he wanted to be in charge of appointments was not qualified. The man martin wanted was also voted against by the opposition, but he named him anyway. According to year end stories, the opposition figured Harper would appoint the guy, who was willing to work for 1.00/year, like martin did. Didn’t happen. Harpers response was, if this guy isn’t qualified, no one will meet the ndps guidelines, so the position is still vacant.
Starting to get stories in the wests papers re the ignorance of western issues by coward dion.

  5. Mulroney doesn’t have much sway, eh? Harper said once that Mulroney played a “private” but “indispensable” role as a friend and political confidant. Also, Harper’s transition team after the election victory was led by Derek Burney, who was once Mulroney’s Chief of Staff, and included Marjory LeBreton and Hugh Segal — both key figures from the Mulroney days.
Oh, and Peter Mackay was dating Sofie Desmarais, so ot appears that the influence of Power Corp. is never that far way.

  6. Iberia, you seem to like swinging the bat – you are asking Bruce Rendell to ‘explain’ the actions of the former PC party of Canada but you are not defending the Liberano/Dipper/Blochead supporters in the same disgraceful times.
As a Conservative, of the Vandersam ilk, I ripped up my membership in the PC Party when Mulroney (with other PC bigshots) back-stabbed Eric Nielson (the man who chained in PET by catching him in his web of lies everyday); I joined The Reform Party. The Reform Party had everything right but the ‘slogan’ “The West wants in” ….why we would have wanted ‘in’ at that time makes a person shake his/her head!
Anyway the wind from the west blew into Rottawa and did some serious barn cleaning, the dumbed down citizens woke up a bit and now we have a Honorable Prime Minister and a New Conservative Party IN government. I am very proud of the New Conservative government that I helped get elected.
Now you defend the lying thieving Liberals, the cowardly lack luster Dippers (NDP) the traitors, the Bloc, or the silly greenies – whoever you voted for in the last election. Are you going to defend your gang with the same zeal as you attack? Can you defend Mr. Clark (not Joe who, I forget the guy’s first name), the former premier of BC, Lorn Culvert in his incompetence, Roy Romanov’s fanaticism? Martin’s musical talent – the guitar recital was really something to see!!! – John Cretian’s robberies and lies – did you believe that that scrap of paper he waved around in the HC was a receipt for a multi million dollar business transaction? Boob Ray and his destruction of Ontario? Tony Penicut (a Yukon Dipper) built a very expensive curling rink in Elsa – after he ran the mining company there out of business.
I hope you pen is ready Iberia. It is your turn to take the field.

  7. Hate to agree with Stalin’s chief executioner, but all evidence suggests government of Canada is Of, For, and By, the Power Corp.
Wonder where we, the peasants, fit in?

  8. Jema54:
My discussion with Bruce was about Mulroney and Power Corps influence on the current Conservative party. Not an attack, but more of a wake up call to those deluded enough to believe that this country is actually run by the politicians for us. The politicians run this country for the corporate elite. Why do you think it’s so easy for people like Stronach and Emerson to swich sides? I’ll give you a hint…because it doesn’t really matter. Liberal or Conservative, both are beholden to corporate interests. Two sides of the same coin.
I’m not defending the Liberals (crooked), Bloc (hypocritical traitors) or the NDP (who have forgotten about the poor and working class in order to cater to wacko fringe groups). But don’t believe for one second that “Canada’s New Government” will be any different than any other government we’ve had in the past 139 years. If anything, judging by what Harper has said and written in the past (in his NCC days), the potential results for the average person will worse if he gets a majority next time around. His plans for “economic integration” etc., will essentially turn Canada into a northern maquiladora zone for the US, diluting our sovereignty for the sake of corporate interests.
I can understand the wealthy supporting the Cons. If you are currently a millionaire, you will be better off under them. If you are not, and you still support the Cons with their false promises of a return to the “good old days” (before “the left” ruined things), you are merely being a useful idiot. For example, look at the false hope they offered the pro-life/anti-SSM supporters. These issues will never be re-opened, but promising that they would certainly got them a few more votes in the last election. And betraying these people was easy, since they won’t vote for the other parties anyway. It was a page out of the Liberal election promises book (“we’ll tear up the FTA/ get rid of the GST…”).
dmorris is right: we’re just peasants, so be careful who you vote for or what you wish for. And don’t be too proud just yet…I was proud of Mulroney when I voted for him in 1984.

  9. Iberia; I guess you have no hope for the country.
My ancestors came here long before there was an infrastructure and they came here cash strapped. Canada offered the displaced Highlanders land for free if they could manage to live on that land for 5 years. Highlanders are tough – they stayed and eventually prospered.
What I am saying is that Private Property Rights are the most important rights of a nation of Free citizens. The Liberano/Dipper outfits left that Right out of the Turdo charter (pun intended). It (the Charter) is not worth the paper it is printed on!! The P C’s were in a leadership thingie when Charter discussions were ongoing. Eric Nielson fought for your freedom and mine (property rights) in the HC with the same aggression as he fought Nazis in WWII. Eric (not Mulroney or Clark) is the reason immigrants cannot camp in your living room while they are looking for their own quarters. Thank him. Turdo quivered in his bell bottomed pants every time Eric dive bombed him – it was really funny to watch; sorry you missed it. Eric squeaked limited property rights through the house on a day that a budget leak left Turdo and his minions short a few M.P.s. I watched the whole show and I stood up and cheered then sat down with tears running down my face. I had seen a very sad end for my country in my minds eye, Eric gave us all hope, Brian betrayed us, Cret/Matin robbed us and brought us down – Ralph Kline saved us from collapsing into a Communist heap – Stephen Harper has brought us trust and hope. It has been a ‘long and winding road’!
Iberia, I think you are trying to sow the seeds of Liberano double speak here. Why are you afraid of lowly criminals who sold oil for cash to Saddam Hussein? They fear us!! They fear Stephen Harper, Stockwell Day, Mr. big mouth Baird, Dianne Ablonzy,…..want to know why? Because the Conservatives are going to put Property Rights back in our Constitution. Governments cannot control people who own property. Governments can only gain control over people with economic sanctions – like Hitler and/ or Military threats.
Soldiers are reluctant to fire on their own people – especially if the people are armed!
All is good if you can wrap your head around some positive thought, Iberia, you have swallowed the ‘victim’ mindset of many Canadians (planted there by MSM, Liberanos and Dippers) – but with good government (The New Conservative government) people are slowly waking up to the fact that they have rights AND responsibilities and they don’t have to suffer Liars, thieves, reprobates and fools in their elected politicians. They(politicians) ask – we (the people) grant.
Get on the Right wagon or get out of the way.

  10. Hey jema54:
Don’t mistake my tone – I’m very positive about life in general, and even though it may seem that I am politically cynical, I consider myself a political realist.
I don’t expect property rights to come up any time soon (an informative overview here:
http://dsp-psd.communication.gc.ca/Collection-R/LoPBdP/BP/bp268-e.htm), and it’s not something that can be easily done anyway. Nor do I expect freer gun control laws. And don’t be surprised if Harper endorses the Kyoto Accord, especially if he wants to win the next election.
White cats or black cats, it’s all the same if you’re one of the mice.

  11. “China is not bound by the Kyoto protocol, the international agreement to limit emissions of climate-changing gases.”
China chokes on a coal-fired boom
A GREAT coal rush is under way across China on a scale not seen anywhere since the 19th century.
Its consequences have been detected half a world away in toxic clouds so big that they can seen from space, drifting across the Pacific to California laden with microscopic particles of chemicals that cause cancer and diseases of the heart and lung.
Nonetheless, the Chinese plan to build no fewer than 500 new coal-fired power stations, adding to some 2,000, most of them unmodernised, that spew smoke, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide into the atmosphere.
It is the political fallout of that decision that is likely to challenge the foundations on which Britain and other developed nations have built their climate change policy — even as there are signs that ordinary Chinese citizens are at last rebelling against lives spent in poisonous conditions.
Cloaked in swirling mists of soot particles and smoke, cities such as China’s “coal capital” of Datong are entering the coldest period of winter in which demand for power and heating produces the worst pollution.
It is often darkness at noon in Datong, just 160 miles west of Beijing, where vehicles drive in daytime with their headlights on to grope through the miasma.
One of the four filthiest towns in China, it stands at the heart of the nation’s coal belt in Shanxi province, a region that mines more coal every year than Britain, Russia and Germany combined.
Cancer rates are soaring, child health is a time bomb and the population, many of whom are heavy cigarette smokers, are paying the price for China’s breakneck rush to riches and industrialisation — an estimated 400,000 premature deaths nationwide because of pollution every year. …-

  12. Perhaps you’d be in better company if you moved to France to live amongst the cheese eating surrender monkeys.

  13. Bruce:
It’s too bad you prefer to make really witty comments rather than have a discussion. I guess that’s just your way of escaping from reality.

  14. BTW, Bruce and Jema54, Mulroney is representing Canada at Pres. Ford’s funeral. Happy New Year.

  15. Mulroney and Wilson attend Ford’s funeral therefor they both must exert tremendous influence over the New Conservative government, not. Lets see, Chretien or Martin or Layton would be O.K. with you? Idiot.

  16. Of course, your right…Muroney was just a random selection and he has no influence whatsoever. (That must be good kool-aid.)
And personally I think that someone from our CURRENT government would be a better representative, hmmm?

  17. Mulroney also attended Reagan’s funeral in 2004, must mean Mulroney had influence over Chretien and the Lie-beral’s as well.

  18. My mistake, Mulroney would have had influence over Smaul Fartin’ in 2004. One common thread though, all of them Power Corp. hacks.
