We Were One: A book review;
It would be easy to pass this book off as just another war story that was written to give us a general idea of what our boys are facing in one of the most dangerous parts of the world as part of the War on Terror. However, O’Donnell gives his readers much more than that, his words make you feel the sweat, exhaustion, fear, and pride that the Marines of Lima company feel as they breach barricaded buildings, avoid snipers, and hunker down for sleep amid the explosions of RPG’s and mortars.

Lots of good tips this past few days – thankyou, everyone.

The little Mosque on the prairies? Nope, no joke. I saw a big write-up about it in the paper complete with photos.
I just finished reading the latest Western Standard that arrived today. Mark Steyn writes about ‘Little Mosque on the Prairie’. He anticipates that it will show wise, kind, sophisticated Muslims dealing with bumbling, comical, prejudiced prairie folk. He calls Muslim the new gay, the CBC will be trying to marginalize and shame anybody who might think there’s something not quite right about Muslims. Whatever, like all CBC productions, maybe 100,000 or so Canadians will be watching and, by CBC standards, that’ll be a big hit show.
A long-time Ottawa radio broadcaster has a new book out;
“How the Granola Crunching Tree-Hugging Thug Huggers Are Destroying Our Country”, by Lowell Green.
Yes, OTTAWA !! Lowell has a huge following on his radio talk-show. The MSM tries to make the rest of the country believe all Ottawa citizens love the ‘Reward-failure’ and ‘Eco-Terrorist’ crowd. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

One thing though, the title is too long 🙂
usually when a new show is being “offered”, it touts the new stars.. there’s no mention of “who” is in this show, only the teaser. then again, no “names” work for the CBC.. another vote for, it sounds too stupid to believe.

Ok Lemming here why did I just vote yes.
Of course the CBC would pull a stunt like that morons. Traitors they should be jailed and then hung.
Mr. Martin – as a lifetime resident of the rural prairies, I cannot adequately explain how abhorrant these cultural slurs (“prairie knuckledraggers”) towards our lifestyle and values are becoming.
“Knuckledragger. Redneck.”
For reasons unexplained, these are the favoured terms of elitist politicians and media alike, when referring to those who have committed the “crime” of adhering to the conservative values that have been the mainstay of rural culture since the founding of our nation.
Yet, to you, we are someone that “mainstream Canadians” should fear – indeed, something less than fully human. We are “knuckledraggers”.
(Let me ask you – when writing about an immigrant politician in Toronto, would you refer to those in their community as “spearchuckers”?)
You are devaluing our culture, you are demeaning an entire class of Canadians and in so doing, suggesting we do not deserve a voice in the political process.
I suggest that you owe a great number of Canadians a sincere apology. You may not agree with conservative rural values, but you have no right to dehumanize those who hold them.

Little Mosque….
What are you going to do if it actually is a good show?
It is a typical fish out of water premise, like Due South, or The Jefferson’s
Yes it is used to reflect not on the fish but on the new environment. If you arent sympathetic to the fish then the premise wont work.
Ultimately, the characters in the environment need to be likable and accepting of “the fish” or the premise wont work either.
My bet, if it is decently written it will have an initial popularity. I am not advocating or dissing it, I havent seen it yet. All I am saying is you better be prepared for a long run.
Of course the CBC may still screw it up, they are good at that.
BTW what about Corner Gas? That shows “bumbling prairie stereotypes” as well, done in a sympathetic manner though.
It isnt a joke, its a real show, and it will either work well or it it will flame out miserably. CBC hasnt had any success with a sitcom since King of Kensington….I think the track record weighs heavily.
Ok I went to the site and looked at the trailers
looks like the streak will continue….a little heavy handed, the appeal will be to the Muslim community and I doubt will appeal to the broader Canadian public.
It will die a natural death if this is the “best stuff”
I am trying to decide if the “protestant” joke is actually offensive or not.
Just a few thoughts on the rotating SGEU strikes. Isn’t it ironic that our RCMP, who are not allowed to strike, would stand in for the SGEU jail guards who are on strike. What a wonderful use for our already understaffed national police force. Also, what is good for the goose should also be good for the gander. The union is completely out of line asking for 27% and are now striking. How about management being just as stupid and locking the whole works of them out. Fat chance that this will happen with the present government.

The Blog Mob
“Written by fools to be read by imbeciles.”

Blogs are very important these days. Even Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has one. The invention of the Web log, we are told, is as transformative as Gutenberg’s press, and has shoved journalism into a reformation, perhaps a revolution.
The ascendancy of Internet technology did bring with it innovations. Information is more conveniently disseminated, and there’s more of it, because anybody can chip in. There’s more “choice”–and in a sense, more democracy. Folks on the WWW, conservatives especially, boast about how the alternative media corrodes the “MSM,” for mainstream media, a term redolent with unfairness and elitism.
The blogs are not as significant as their self-endeared curators would like to think. Journalism requires journalists, who are at least fitfully confronting the digital age. The bloggers, for their part, produce minimal reportage. Instead, they ride along with the MSM like remora fish on the bellies of sharks, picking at the scraps.
More success is met in purveying opinion and comment. Some critics reproach the blogs for the coarsening and increasing volatility of political life. Blogs, they say, tend to disinhibit. Maybe so. But politics weren’t much rarefied when Andrew Jackson was president, either. The larger problem with blogs, it seems to me, is quality. Most of them are pretty awful. Many, even some with large followings, are downright appalling.
Every conceivable belief is on the scene, but the collective prose, by and large, is homogeneous: A tone of careless informality prevails; posts oscillate between the uselessly brief and the uselessly logorrheic…-

I checked out the little mosque trailers and the airport one was a study in “fire!” in a crowded theater.
I can’t believe that any Muslim in the current climate would make references of any type similar to what the character was saying at the check-in. Unless they’re deliberately trying to score points or create a false sense of “islamophobia.”
The “prostitute” “protestant” thing made me laugh and I’m one of those “born again” types.
For the most part it’ll be watched by those who want to seem so accepting of any and all cultures while looking down their noses at our “white”, western culture. Oh, and perhaps a few others as well.
een
Wow, Kate, you’re doing it again! The “dog-chaining vote” is currently sitting at 98% YES and 2% NO. Bwahahahaha…the power, the power!
I just have to share this…
I came across the following – written in 1935 by English Philosopher Bertrand Russell. The paper is called “On the Value of Scepticism” and, as the title suggests, it is primarily about taking a rational, skeptical viewpoint in a world where you are surrounded by people with less scientific belief systems…but whose zeal seems overpowering.
But, I thought I would share part of it because I, for one, have always been a little confused as to why liberals always seem to have more “passion” in getting out their views while invalidating conservative values with irrational, infantile, but surprisingly effective tactics such as name-calling and the never-ending cycle of protests.
In short, I have always been worried that an apparent lack of zeal (or “passion”) among conservatives was a failing on our part. Then I came across this. Suddenly, I feel a lot better…
When there are rational grounds for an opinion, people are content to set them forth and wait for them to operate. In such cases, people do not hold their opinions with passion; they hold them calmly, and set forth their reasons quietly. The opinions that are held with passion are always those for which no good ground exists; indeed the passion is the measure of the holder’s lack of rational conviction. Opinions in politics and religion are almost always held passionately.
.
.
.
Human events spring from passions, which generate systems of attendant myths. Psychoanalysts have studied the individual manifestations of this process in lunatics, certified and uncertified. A man who has suffered some humiliation invents a theory that he is King of England, and develops all kinds of ingenious explanations of the fact that he is not treated with that respect which his exalted position demands. In this case, his delusion is one with which his neighbours do not sympathize, so they lock him up. But if, instead of asserting only his own greatness, he asserts the greatness of his nation or his class or his creed, he wins hosts of adherents, and becomes a political or religious leader, even if, to the impartial outsider, his views seem just as absurd as those found in asylums. In this way a collective insanity grows up, which follows laws very similar to those of individual insanity. Every one knows that it is dangerous to depute with a lunatic who thinks he is King of England; but as he is isolated, he can be overpowered. When a whole nation shares a delusion, its anger is of the same kind as that of an individual lunatic if its pretensions are disputed, but nothing short of war can compel it to submit to reason.
So, as I read it, those on the left who display so much more “passion” (through their never-ending complaining and protesting to raise “awareness”) are doing it soley because it is symptomatic of their lunacy. Everything is so much clearer now.
Reader tip: The Winnipeg Free Press is carrying a story today concerning Christmas bonuses at the Canadian Wheat Board. It’s available free at their website:
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/subscriber/canada/story/3822013p-4421238c.html
The story goes that the Board of Directors decided to hand out $1000 bonuses to each employee to compensate for “…the “stress” and “strain” they have been under during the Winnipeg-based agency’s fight with the Harper government.”
Note how the story spins this issue to make it seem that this is all the fault of that awful Stephen Harper. It even quotes an anonymous employee who wonders if this is “hush” money.
Naughy, naughty! Picking on the hysterical freaks at AAS…

‘Little Mosque on the Prairie’
Gee I wonder if there will be any beheading episodes of infidals. Perhaps a stoning or two of raped Women. A jolly show for a humorious people.
Will there be a Moe Cartoon riot? Will the Ladies get to go to school? Can Women be seen driving? Will the towns only artist be shot than butchered by a blade?
Will the good folks of this Mosque be calling jews , swine & apes. Christians as blasfemers? Will this lovable group be teaching that a none Muslim is a target for death by any faithfull Muslim?
Will the Town even be left styanding? High drama at the CBC. Nah!!!!
The CBC (Cresent Broadcasting Channel) will show us only lovable, caring sharing socialist Muslims & the Religion of peace, as superior to our western beliefs. The Christians will come off as fools & bigots. Just think of the fun when they encounter polythiest Mormons. Typical CBC fair. Morality plays to engender political correctness.
Meanwhile the world burns.
A $1000 bonus for stress??? How many bushels of wheat is $1000?
Maybe they should give healthcare workers a bonus too for stress. Better yet, those poor senators have been under the microscope lately. I’m sure they are getting stressed out (at least the ones that are awake).
“Little Mosque on the Prairie” should do for the Islamic community what “Hogan’s Heroes” did for the Nazis.
I have yet to see a CBC “comedy” that was very funny, most appear to have high school students writing the scripts. Watched “King of Kensington” many times trying to figure out what was so great about the show. Finally came to the conclusion it was great because it was about Toronto, centre of the (Canadian) universe.
The “Beachcombers” was enjoyable, due to Bruno Gerussi and Robert Clothier, and the scenery was great.
Canadian comedies usually fail because the writing is substandard, best writers have gone to where the money is, in that unmentionable country to the South. When I watch most CBC comedies, I get the impression that a well connected elite has managed to obtain more government funding for their second rate work.
Dramas are a different matter, CBC does some very well. I especially enjoyed the recent fantasy that portrayed a Saskatchewan politician who years later attained sainthood in the Canadian Arts Community. The costumes and photography were quite well done, though the story itself was half baked and no one would believe it.
I anticipate the upcoming scene in “Little Mosque” where a fundamentalist Islamic cleric comes to visit, and the lead actress takes him to task for his ignorant, racist, misogynistic beliefs, then sends him packing, humiliated and shamed.
Indians win right to hunt at night. Another racist ruling by the supreme Arrogant court of Canada. One said the treaties must be adapted to modern times as bow and arrows were no longer used so guns must be allowed. The logic of idiots. The spirit of the treaty at the time apparently doesn’t matter, it’s politically correct today so the law, their law, is simply overlooked. I guess simple hunting skills are beyond the intelligence of today’s Indians, is that what the supreme court is saying?
Does the CBC have any contact with reality anymore? Ha ha ha let’s trivialize Islamic terrorizism by making a big joke out of it. It’s not like it’s the most serious issue facing western society or anything.
And once again, when it comes to the CBC, the most frustrating thing of all, my tax dallars help fund this “quality programming”
Hmmmm…..$1000.00 Christmas bonus. Will they be encouraged to donate a portion of it to their friendly neighbourhood Liberal candidate? In what form did the bonus arrive? CWB cheque or brown paper bag? Did Canada Post deliver the money or were they instructed to pick it up at a restaurant?
Little Mosque on the Prairie….. Hey, easternpaul, I wonder where they will be shooting this series! (inside joke) Quite the cast of character would be available too! heh heh!
Father: “You’re dressed like a Protestant.”
Daughter:”You mean a prostitute?”
Father: “No, I mean a Protestant.”
I chuckled.
The other jokes were all based on profiling. There’s some rich stuff in there for comedy. And as with all comedy something or someone is the brunt of the joke. In this case it’s rural, prairie Canadians. But look, they’re actually not Canadians. They’re knuckle dragging, redneck, racist, bigoted, Christian – Canadians.
And how did these CAIR approved, over hyped, over-stated attitudes show up in, of all places, the Prairies, against the oh so poor, victimized Muslims? Despite the jokes and portrayals being way over the top, duh, let me think. Could it be 9/11, Afghanistan, Iraq, 7/7, the Toronto 17, Sudan, snuff film beheadings, the Bali bombing and every brutal terrorist attack and war in the entire freakin’ world? Not to mention 1400 years of solid practice?
And for what reason are these attacks? Could it be that the Quran and their prophet – the ‘uncreated’ foundation and ‘perfect’ example of Islam, that all Muslims share – including nice Muslims, moderate Muslims, funny Muslims and murderous Muslims – commands the faithful to go and commit genocidal attrocities against infidels, until the entire world is dar el Islam?
Based on that, I’d think the premise of the show is a little flawed compared to comedys about other oppressed groups. Ridiculing the so-called Prairie oppressors, and giving the real and extremely dangerous oppression – Islam – a pass, is criminal. Hundreds of people dying everyday and an entire world in fear because of a sick, supremist ideology isn’t funny.
I’m actually willing to watch the show before condemning it. Perhaps the rest of you should, too.
(Yes, I know I’m setting myself up for failure… Danger Bay was the last thing that I religiously watched on the CBC, and I’m still washing the eco-freak of of my skin.)

Dad: Allahu Ackbar! Sounds like fun. don’t be back too late!

In his 1971 song “Imagine,” John Lennon asks us to envision a secular utopia. There’s no heaven, no hell. Peace and harmony reign, and a global “brotherhood of man” flourishes. Amid this blissful state of affairs, of course, we find “no religion.”
Lennon was a talented songwriter, but when it came to theology, he was 180 degrees off. A world free of religion would certainly have no heaven. But there would be plenty of hell — and right here on earth.
This isn’t simply the opinion of a lady who takes her faith seriously. A large and growing body of social science research shows what a huge difference religious faith makes in our everyday lives. It’s no overstatement, in fact, to say that religion makes civil society possible. …-

Little Mosque…
Quite frankly I found what I saw to be sterotypes. The young man arrested in the airport was overwrought. There is another approach to make this truely funny.
The young girl….potential in this character, to show how she deals with a conservatiove upbringing. The problem is are they going to portray the culture they are in as a perpetual threat? Or will it be, as any good fish out of water comedy is, a path to compromise. Lampooning the extremes on both sides.
Which of course leads us to the Father, who is the Imman it looks like. Is he to be portrayed as an Archie Bunker type, will his old fashioned and conservative views be held up to scrutiny, which is where these traditionally go. think about My Big Fat Greek wedding.
While there were things to be celebrated there were things to be mocked….will this show mock Muslim life and values that may be out of step? This is what these shows, All in The Family, Due South, The Jeffersons, Mork and Mindy etc all do. Both sides are shown to be odd while the universal, which is ulimately the compomise, is ultimately celebrated.
The concept is interesting, but what I saw in thise trailers was hardly that, it looked to be all about humaninzing Muslims and demonizing the culture they are coming into.
The airport arrest scense works better if you drop the “flying While Muslim” statement and show it more humorously as being totally innocent…
The statement that he was in Afghanistan and had been working for an aid organization….that isnt funny at all unless there is a previous scene that sets that up properly, ie showing him doing innocent work.
Why? The Kahdr’s were in Afghanistan doing “aid” work.
There is potential here but right now it looks to be just plain bad television.
However the Muslim BBQ short film, that premise is excellent and it sounded like they executed it well. Good sketch….
But I sure hope the characters arent as thinkly sketched as they have put up and that the writing is much stronger than what is on those trailers.
Major Dad was a secular version, how does a Conservative Military father raise a daughter in a liberal, non military environemnt….these are all just examples of the same theme.
Premise is promising, right now the
execute absolutely sucks from what they have shown.
Honestly, and no irony intended, jewish comedy writers always wrote these best as they were outsiders in a Christian world. Where is the “Schwarma Belt” that performs in the Catskills?
I dont know how strong the comedic tradition is in Islam….once again I look forward to the mirror being held up like My Big Fat Greek Wedding, to their own traditions, which lovingly criticizes the more extreme positions while poking fun at the new world they are in. Bend It Like Beckham was another great example.
Lets hope there it is better television than what they have shown of this promising premise.
Now more than ever I am soooo glad I locked out CBC a long time ago.
One of my new pastimes is to walk around downtown vancouver and call all the sandmonkeys terrorists, you might not believe it but I get a lot of smiles from people that are really scared of these scum.
Free: maybe you should keep your pejorative racial epithets for the left wing blog you trolled in from.
Islamophobia and claims of victimization are not legitimate. Their Quran commands them to Islamize the world by whatever means possible. This includes political, social, disinformation/dissimilitude (taqiyya), terrorist attacks and outright war.
Their perfect example of the pious Muslim life, for all to follow is Mohammad. A proven mass murderer, brigand and pedophile.
The world has every right to be and rationally must be highly suspicious, on guard and wary, as long as they adhere to a genocidal creed and a prophet’s example that has shown them how to accomplish a life of bigotry, hate and death.
