  4. Tomax7, haven’t you heard? Bush is stronger on environmental issues than Canada’s Liberals (and now Conservatives). Clearly the lights have something to do with alien invasions. Darn Liberals didn’t want Missile Defence, and it’s going to cost us this week…

  6. I am envious of those who live in the real north. I grew up in North Bay, which is well below the 49th. We’d spend weekends out watching satellites and stars, occasionally getting small bits of the Northern lights. These pictures make me at once reminiscent and very jealous.

  7. As a youngster growing up in northern Manitoba, I remember northern lights being even more spetacular than those pictured. Some nights they were ruby red and violet. You could also hear them crackling.
    Thanks for this Kate; it brings back many fond memories.

  8. I think I’ve seen red once in 2004. The ones from a couple nights ago had violet, but I didn’t get any photos because they were mostly directly overhead, and I was in the middle of creating an animation at the horizon instead.
    The city’s too loud to hear crackling, but I know what you mean. I think the way they look, you half expect to hear the crackle of a fire, in any case.

  10. Not that those northern lights are impressive but in all honesty one has to spend some time up in Yellowknife to truly see a great light show. Almost makes you forget that parts of your body are turning to ice as you watch. Of course this always brings up the “hearing” the northern lights.

  11. …i remember walking on a grid road west of Cold Lake, AB and the northern lights were brighter and larger than usual.
    Then suddenly the whole sky lites up different tones of red and “exploding” right over my head.! Was kinda freaky, almost apocoliptic(?)
    Maybe the following mushroom cloud gave it away?

  12. We were driving home from town when the best part started. Stopped the car and got out to watch. Absolutely stunning and amazing. Wrecked ham radio for a week, but worth it !!!!

  13. Growing up in North Central Wisconsin, I often saw the wonders of the aurora borealis in midwinter. Sometimes, even in midsummer if there was a solar flare…

  14. The photo is taken at the corner of Metcalfe and Wellington Streets in Ottawa. It appears that Dion is walking in a direction AWAY from the Legevin Building which houses the PM’s ofice and the PMO.
    Is that what Kinsella is upset about – the direction of the walk?

  17. Oh yeah it does look like a stable sort of. It’s actually a 3 story apartment building though, and it’s more yellow than usual because of the type of street light used and the long exposure.
