A “militant middle class” is beginning to arm itself – in Britain.
Shut down the self-serving advocacy groups, and use the resources for real people who legitimately need help, Signs look good for a Disability Savings Plan idea.

A reader from Toronto writes;
Subject: Road Stories – The Homefront CFB Edmonton
I have been disappointed in the inept and biased coverage the CBC has been serving up on the war until LAST NIGHT. For the first time Mansbridge, Brian Stuart and company projected a positive, constructive picture of the mission and the men and women involved.
If you mised the CFB Edmonton “Road Story” you should ping your readership and see if anyone taped it. When Canadian soldiers talk about the mission – they are modest, committed and plain spoken. I know of no other example on MSM (broadcast) where ordinary soldiers from western democracies have been permitted to talk about their work so directly.
And good for them. We need more of this – much more.
Add yours in the comments.
And yes, yesterday was my birthday. Thanks for the kind comments and to those who hit the tip jar. As I’m now officially a year older, I decided it was time to change the little portrait on the sidebar. It was getting a bit dated. Hope you like it!

Hey Maz2-Bot
Do you think
you
can condense your comments a wee bit?
You see,
in a long thread like this one
your comments,
which are often informative by the way,
take up
a
lot
of
space,
making it difficult to peruse the thread in it’s entirety for the rest of us.
I, for one,
don’t care that you’ve posted
16
times
already in this thread
but if your comments were
shorter
it would be easier to read comments left by other folks.
Thanks for your
kind
consideration.
The only thing I have to say about Kinsella is that he reminds me of the slight sadness I felt when, at 21 years of age, I looked around on the dance floor and realized I was too old for punk.
Good point, Bob.

The case for the seperation of church and state has been articulated and argued countless times. Rather than rebut those arguments the author of the “all gods are equal” piece constructs a straw man, it’s classic lazy partisan thinking.
Just in the off chance that anyone is really curious as to what new is being said about this (not much I’m afraid this debate has already been done very rigorously decades ago) there’s an excellent debate going on at Edge.org with well written pieces by Dawkins and Dennet plus a few well constructed opposing views.
Coyne: The last days of the CRTC | December 14th, 2006
What is the sound of one hand clapping? If you’re the CRTC, it is the cry that does not come, the protest no one makes, the silent death knell for the agency that once controlled just about everything that makes a noise in this country. If it was not clear before, it is now:
the last days of the CRTC are upon it.
Consider: the Conservative government has just trampled over a nominally independent regulator, rewriting the rules governing local phone competition, with brusque disregard for the agency’s traditional prerogatives. Henceforth, what we used to call “the phone companies” will be free to set their own prices, wherever they do not enjoy an outright monopoly — ie in those areas of the country where cable and voice-over-internet providers have invaded the market.
And absolutely no one has risen to the agency’s
defence. Not a word of complaint from the Opposition parties, barely a peep even from those most affected by the decision.
The CRTC has no defenders left, no constituency — and, increasingly, no role. Leaderless, purposeless, made redundant by the advance of technology and neutered by a determined Industry minister, it’s curtains for the commission.

Happy Birthday, Kate.
You share a birthday with my sister.
It is such a special day. All December birthdays are, doncha know.
Many Happy Returns.
Especially liked the poem from someone above.
The Kinsellas, Dions, Judges ruling to remove a Christmas tree , Opp harrassing a farmer ( would they took Caledonia as seriously!)… they can all go to the grog pot of reality and take a huge slug.
For me, I am sick and tired ( with all the meaning of that phrase!) with all the ignorant and downright dangerous nonsense that passes for ‘culture’ these days. No matter what someone does there is someone else complaining about it.
About time the ‘Silent Majority’ ( if there is such a thing, stood up and made it plain we here in this country have our own traditions that we do not want to see run into the ground and jackbooted out of existence. We like our Christmas trees, our carols and the singing of them, and all the traditions we Westerners have grown up to cherish. Others are free to cheris their own traditions and no one is standing in their way or complaining that it might upset our western ‘sensitivity’… We have a country and there is tradition. If they don’t like it they can go somewhere else. Time to stand up for US , for Canada and all that has meant to us in all it’s beauty and meaning.
As for everyone who wants to complain about us while whining about their traditions not getting enough play and attention, I say what Michelle Malkin is fond of saying: ” Boo Freaking Hoo”!!
“As for everyone who wants to complain…”
At christmas time the only people I hear whining are right wing christians complaining about a War on Christmas. But maybe I’m not looking hard enough for something to be outraged about.
Kate, I’m sure you saw it on National Newswatch, but apparently the Globe and Mail’s John Doyle had a few unkind words to say about the CBC piece you mentioned in this post. Mansbridge fought back with a startling defence of our troops.
“What is particularly offensive about Doyle’s column is his charge that CBC’s actions “give the appearance of an obedient press corps, placating the government.” What absolute nonsense.”
and
“The very same poll, however, showed the overwhelming majority of Canadians, whatever their views of about the Afghan mission, thought very highly of the military (73 per cent). So we don’t feel an obligation to act as if soldiers and their families should somehow remain an overlooked minority of no account, mere shadows in the corner of the holiday season.”
Jose, you must be asleep!
Amazing insite, Kate. You can always simplify and reduce anything to the lowest common denominator. I would add;
There are lots of fools, but no fool like an old fool.
There are lots of punks, but no punk like an old punk !!
Useful punk in that he helped Sheila rid Canada of Paul Martin. But now he wants to impose a French Citizen PM on us. One that names his dog after a Hoax, no less.
‘cops are tops’ ?
NOT !!!
check the toronto sun dec 14 cover:
TRAFFIC QUOTA SLAMMED
23 Division cops could go home early if
they wrote 25 tags.
Ive been bitching about cop quotas for DECADES.
now you all know.
its a conflict of interest, instead of just randomly tagging and at times in low incident areas just to let the violators know, these pricks are going to target the know fast areas and then scoot off for a few rounds of golf.
regular country club it is.
how can you assess the impact of changing policies, manpower, areas of focus, with a friggin QUOTA SYSTEM in place ???
‘cops are tops’ BULL
This media corrupt thing is really, well, corrupt.
Google Dr. Patrick Moore/malaria, and you get nothing.
Even though Patrick has been pushing for years to have the stupid DDT Ban lifted. When used reasonably, DDT is safe. 10s of millions of people(mostly children) have died since the ban took affect. Patrick was instrumental in some countries now lifting it. Media recognition of this great Canadian and founder of Greanpeace ? None.
Google Belinda/malaria and presto. Lots of Media stories of her support to send nets to 3rd world countries. An ok project but is the media not being a little selective here. The media calls Belinda “high profile”. In whose eyes ??
Dr. Patrick Moore does not blindly buy into Kyoto. Is the media punishing him ??
~~~ More Than All The Other Nominees Combined ?? Simply Amazing. ~~~
Something ever Canadian should be thinking; “Sometimes I may not agree with you, but I would fight to the end for your right to have your Blog”
And to think some Waco-Enviros are demanding that some scientists(Dr. Tim Ball) should not be allowed to speak out. That is negative-amazing.
In 1962, Rachel Carson wrote the book ‘Silent Spring”.
‘(3w)’.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,215084,00.html
Even though she got a lot wrong in the book, it led to the Ban on DDT. Eco-Activism(terrorism) was born. And in the following decades 10s of millions died of malaria. DDT could have prevented most of those deaths. How sick is that ??
Now the World Health Organization has lifted the ban.
Question; Should the activists be charged with murder ?? Of Millions ??
This was #4 in 2006 Top Ten Junk Science Awards.
Family vows ‘to continue the fight’ for Bam-Bam after minister rejects permit
By NELLY ELAYOUBI — Ottawa Sun
The emotional case of Bam-Bam the pet deer is heading to Premier Dalton McGuinty.
“We can’t stop now,” 72-year-old Bruce Straby, who found and raised Bam-Bam, said yesterday after the minister of natural resources rejected a special permit to allow the Greely family to care for the doe. (cnews: posted there under Weird News)
Sid Ryan – Chief CUPE Communist, explains why he is anti-Israel in today’s TO Sun:
http://www.torontosun.com/News/Columnists/Ryan_Sid/2006/12/15/2805677.html
“Last spring, 900 delegates to the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario convention overwhelmingly passed a resolution expressing support for the global campaign against Israeli apartheid.”
His buzz word for the article is “apartheid”… you know, that South Africa thing nobody liked? He’s not anti-Israel/pro-Muslim-terrorism, he’s just against that South Africa thingie.
The JIG is up.
Al Gore just held a news conference saying ‘scientists'(lackeys) should speak out more on the global warming thing(Hoax). Be more Suzuki like ??
At said ‘news’ conference, Inconvenient Al DID NOT take any questions. (more scared of questions that AGW?) The scam is revealed.
Theme for the coming election, to be used to counter the dion/kyoto crap.
ENVIROWACKOS AND GREENS LIED, MILLIONS DIED.
He didn’t want to take questions at a news conference? He must be drifting towards the right!
No offense intended Kate, but the new pic makes it appear that you were in your single digits prior to indoor plumming. Perhaps Kate in a swimsuit sporting the latest from the Winchester Arms Co., the blog may drip testesterone for a few weeks, but I’m just saying….
