“Star Wars” critics
… must bear the major burden of responsibility for the delays and setbacks that have prevented the missile defense system from becoming fully operational long before the present crisis with North Korea.”

Oy. Star wars again. Oh, it’s Robert. You know folks, this is what happens when you let marketing interfere with engineering. You get a sub-standard product.
Kelly, I think your statement is rhetorically brilliant, but I’m not sure what your dialectic point is.
New York denies gay marriage.
NEW YORK (Reuters) – The New York State Court of Appeals refused to recognize same-sex marriage in a ruling issued on Thursday, saying the issue was a question for the Legislature to decide.
The New York case involved 48 gay and lesbian couples who filed four separate cases seeking to overturn as unconstitutional a 97-year-old state law that defines marriage as between a man and woman.
From the NYSC decision,
“Until a few decades ago, it was an accepted truth for almost everyone who ever lived, in any society in which marriage existed, that there could be marriages only between participants of different sex. A court should not lightly conclude that everyone who held this belief was irrational, ignorant or bigoted. We do not so conclude.”
rabbit:
bingo !!!
whose to say stealth technology isnt applicable to missiles??? and a modern version ‘window pane’ the huge quantities of aluminum foil dumped out of WW II bombers to fool nazi radar? hey dear star wars defenders: we humans have had SEVENTY FUKIN YEARS to improve on that clever little diversion.
when are you wilfully ignorant bushists going to finally accept the reason star wars worked and ended the cold war is the russians saw the expense of building their own and gave up the ghost? it only worked because it was suggested. it had enough believability at the time, to act as the coup de grace against communism. the only weapon system, defensive or otherwise, that worked despite the fact it didnt even exist !!!
now however, with a new set of dynamics, the notion of throwing staggering sums of money at a military problem just doesnt cut it. we have to use our smarts and not just muscle and wallet to achieve defense of the homeland.
dubya lacks the smarts and his white house masters are too interested in the money to set the idea aside.
well, NOW have I convinced anyone ???
LOL !!!
p.s. whosits who envisioned an upgraded Arrow was right on also. nuthin like 100 human pilots going mach 3, air-to-air missles bristling at the ready, swarming the incoming warhead.
now THAT I am willing to support and finance because it WILL work.
I refused to vote conservatist for some 40 years because of the pettiness of diefenbaker scrubbing the plane. jeezuz, I couldnt even vote at the time, I already made up my mind it wasnt going to be his bunch.
also: mr st vitus: your comparison of the failure to defend against the 9/11 planes then projecting it to the superiority of star wars missiles is flawed.
the twin towers were hit by PASSENGER PLANES masquerading as, er, passenger planes. nothing unusual about that!! how long did the air force have before realizing something was amiss???
it was a brand new avenue of attack (well, ignoring the FACT certain parties WARNED the bushists some months ahead of time that communications had been intecepted describing said attack)
but we have known about the threat of incoming nuke missiles for about 50 years. ok, 40 years.
no comparison.
again. what would be more effective?? having THOUSANDS of interceptors scrambled and manned by highly motiivated pilots capable of last second revision of the defence plan, each capable of downing as many as 4 incoming missiles (how many air-to-air missiles do they have under the wings) ooooor . . . . a trillion dollar INCOMPLETELY TESTED star wars with NO TRACK RECORD of performance to engender trust. which do you want????
The thing is, Robert, … oh never mind, I’ve got something productive to do.
“You know folks, this is what happens when you let marketing interfere with engineering. You get a ”
awww, lookit here.
mr st vitus dance gets personal again.
no counterpoint regarding cost-effectiveness, just insult ‘aimed’ at me.
which I ‘shoot down’ with MY aircraft based manned defence system.
I win !!!
LOL !!!
GIVE IT UP DIPWAD.
“the only defense system that really finally stopped the 9/11 terrorists were the people on flight 93 fighting for their lives”
exactamundo Kelly
and why is that?
take note mr. st vitus:
because the human brain contains within it vastly more flexibility and last moment innovation capability than any pre-coded cumbersome NOT COMPLETELY TESTED 100,000,000 lines-of-code software system. ( if the error rate is only ONE line per 10,000 that still leaves A THOUSAND LINES of error.)
how much damage and ruination can happen with even one measly line of source code out of whack?
hint: murphy’s law !!!
note the successful human defenders of 9/11 were ON A PLANE and coordinated their counter attack on the fly.
it WORKS and has been PROVEN to work for CENTURIES.
give enough gutsy quick thinkers (ie fighter pilots, air craft carrier commanders, etc) the tools to do the job and it will get done.
hey, st vitus: INCOMING !!!!! HUNDREDS OF THEM !!!
LOL !!!!!
for steve d……Canada’s defense has to be right(100%)all the time and the terrorists need only to succeed once.
Vitruvius
I was talking about the Missile defence system.
NORMAN MINETA, SECRETARY OF TRANSPORTATION, TESTIFIED BEFORE THE 9/11 COMMISSION: “During the time that the airplane was coming into the Pentagon, there was a young man who would come in and say to the Vice President…the plane is 50 miles out…the plane is 30 miles out….and when it got down to the plane is 10 miles out, the young man also said to the Vice President “Do the orders still stand?” And the Vice President turned and whipped his neck around and said “Of course the orders still stand, have you heard anything to the contrary!??”
Their watching the plane coming in they could’ve fired a missile from Andrews Airforce Base to knock it down? They were tracking it.
How well did the Patriots protect Israel during the first gulf war?
During the war, Israel was hit by 39 Iraqi Scud missiles. The damage caused by those that landed in Tel Aviv and Haifa, two of Israel’s three largest cities (Jerusalem was spared), was extensive. Approximately 3,300 apartments and other buildings were affected in the greater Tel Aviv area alone.
Maybe if they weren’t running all those drills on 9/11 they would’ve had the planes close by. But they did have Patriots.
you can’t be everywhere all the time
Missile defense in Canada and paid for by the Americans? Sounds like a sweet deal for us.
Maybe we could work out some of our sovereignty issues up north while we are making nice and sell them some of our ‘Made in Canada’ pollution/enviromental solutions.
Geez, I have to give my head a shake. I forgot that McChimpyBushitler is the anti-Christ. Reality only counts when it’s proving socialists right.

this just in:
my contacts in the central asian country of Aoe tell me their esteemed leader a former nuclear weapons engineer working for the russians, have come up with an ingenious plan to attack the USA for a price.
they have built ordinary missile launch sites, fully visible via spy satelliete, with siloes clustered instead of dispersed. clustered because they are solely offensive weapons (defensive missiles need to be dispersed to ‘cover more territory’)
what the spy satellites dont show is the launch button is wired to ALL the missiles. they all blast off at once.
and the attack will take place a night, so the satellites wont be able to clearly discerne this tactic.
and what makes it a tactic? this is the fun part.
the missiles once they gain speed and establish their trajectory, will use radio signals amongst themselves to fly within as little as 30 meters of each other. a tight formation which is going to look like a single warhead coming in. defensive radar will also be deceived by the use of window pane dropped by each of the missiles.
plus other techniques my contact did not divulge.
the missiles are equipped with sensors to watch for appraoching star wars weaponry.
and at a optimum moment, one of the cluster will hive off on a different trajectory, thus revealing and becoming TWO targets on different paths.
well terrific says the outgoing star wars missile. now what? decision time !!! gee, I HOPE THE DESIGNERS AND SOFTWARE PROGRAMMERS CONSIDERED THIS POSSIBILITY.
so the star wars defensive missile makes a choice and lo, stays with the ‘bigger’ target.
allowing the single missile to proceed unthreatened. necessitating launch of ANOTHER star wars defensive missile. jeepers, hope we got lots in reserve!!! cause THIS is going on allover the place boys !!! ah jeez, the whole thing was premised on spotting the launch, tracking and sending out OUR defensive missiles on a one-on-one basis. but now at the worst possible time, the missiles are becoming apparent MUCH CLOSER. got that star wars defenders??? BIG LOSS in lead time to the great ronald reagan dream just happened.
aaaaand guess what, that single missile that cleaved off the cluster? ummm, more bad news. ‘it’ is still spewing out window pane and ‘it’ has just become TWO distinct targets with about 8 minutes left till it/they hit.
ahferfuksake. now what are we supposed to do george dubya??? its as if these friggin missiles have suddenly materialized at mach 20 less than 10 minutes away. WE DIDNT KNOW THE RADAR BLIPS WERE ACTUALLY NUMEROUS MISSILES FLYING VERY CLOSE TOGETHER. (hint: HUMAN pilots would see the separate contrails and KNOW what was up, but they have been delegated a distant second fiddle by certain parties including mr st. vitus dance)
shyt shyt shyt shyt shyt shyt. uh, we gots no backup plan dubya, any suggestions?
aaaand remember!! cant hurl ALL the star wars ordinance all at once just in case THIS actually DOES happen.
sooooo NOW we gotta build EVEN MORE of them to have enough for the first outgoing wave of missiles whilst maintaining FOOLPROOF level of reserve.(gotta be foolproof !!! gotta work ooooone HUNNERT percent folks !!)
and so still MORE layers of communication and coordination software. which will NEVER be fully tested. how can you ???? hmmmm ???? how in blazes (10 million degree blazes to be exact) can you possibly test all concievable scenarios??? how can you . AND YA GOTTA TEST THEM ALL AND THEN SOME BECAUSE STAR WARS IS BEING SOLD TO US AS VERY NECESSARY AND UTTERLY PERFECT AND FLAWLESS.
because how do you measure its cost vs the cost of a major city?? of which there are what, 100 to 200 in the USA???
those are the numbers people.
now the original estimates have tripled to THREE TRILLION DOLLARS. more or less but whose counting?
all because the electronics and hyperaccurate guidance and propulsion systems now exist to fly missiles very close together without bumping in to each other. nikita krushchev’s boast about being able to ‘hit a fly in space’ is NO LONGER an exaggeration.
and then theres that goddamm window pane, creating uncertainty between the radar info and the fuzzy optical images coming in from the satellites.
which are insufficient to watch all the action anyway.
but wait, there’s more.
not only THAT, but the former soviet nuclear weapons engineer has decided to incorporate yet another of his ideas.
each and every missile launched by Aoe has a HUMAN OPERATOR monitoring it, checking its path, talking to his collegues over headphones, making last moment decisions on which attacking missiles to sacrifice in order to get others thru, it just goes on and on and on. its NO LONGER as case of launching missiles as if they are artillery shells equipped with fins. these babies got lots of smarts built in and even more help from the ground.
so, do tell, how effective is your precious Republican star wars system going to be in THOSE circumstances??? hmmmm????
p.s. mr asteve: interesting, you are using a tactic my history prof explained about how brezhnev got krushchev booted out of power.
nikita gave a 4 hour speech to the politburo one day, and ol’ leonid had his fella’s go over it with a fine tooth comb.

The Source of Europe’s Mild Climate
The notion that the Gulf Stream is responsible for keeping Europe anomalously warm turns out to be a myth
Richard Seager
If you grow up in England, as I did, a few items of unquestioned wisdom are passed down to you from the preceding generation. Along with stories of a plucky island race with a glorious past and the benefits of drinking unbelievable quantities of milky tea, you will be told that England is blessed with its pleasant climate courtesy of the Gulf Stream, that huge current of warm water that flows northeast across the Atlantic from its source in the Gulf of Mexico. That the Gulf Stream is responsible for Europe’s mild winters is widely known and accepted, but, as I will show, it is nothing more than the earth-science equivalent of an urban legend. …-

Odd isn’t is that the NATO Europeans are embracing missile defence when in Canada it is still something that dare not speak its name?
“Nato warms to plan for defence shield”
msnbc.msn.com/id/13741807/
Excerpts:
‘Plans for a Europe-wide missile defence system to protect the continent from possible threats from Iran and North Korea are winning backing from Nato headquarters, while Pyongyang’s recent missile tests have reignited debate in the US about a missile defence system.
Jaap de Hoop Scheffer, Nato secretary-general, wants member states to consider seriously a recently issued 10,000-page report that concluded that such a system would be feasible for Europe and added that the dangers posed by Pyongyang and Tehran were increasing…
Plans for a Europe-wide missile defence system to protect the continent from possible threats from Iran and North Korea are winning backing from Nato headquarters, while Pyongyang’s recent missile tests have reignited debate in the US about a missile defence system.
Washington is in talks with some Nato member states, such as Poland, the Czech Republic and the UK, about help they can provide with the US’s $10bn-a-year (£5.4bn) missile defence system.
Several European governments hope they can get protection in return for agreeing to base anti-missile interceptors, vital for the working of the system, on their territories.
But Nato officials believe that a Europe-wide system could complement the US’s own military defence, and worry that the unity of the alliance could be fatally undermined if some but not all of the members were protected.’
But we must be BMD virgo intacto, indeed embarrassed that we may already be receiving some US protection.

Report by AP, aka MSM, does not say foreign terrorists are Muslim Islamist terrorists. …-
WASHINGTON –Authorities have disrupted planning by foreign terrorists for an attack on New York City tunnels, two law enforcement officials said Friday.
via google news
Actually, it’s not odd to find support for a missile defence plan among the Europeans named in the story above: government and NATO officials.
It’s especially unsurprising to find support for missile defence among the people who authored the 10,000 page NATO feasibility study: a consortium of industries, including the very same aerospace/defence companies who have profited and will continue profit from juicy missile defence contracts.
(The contents of the study, btw, have not been made public, or at least they hadn’t as of late May:
http://www.basicint.org/pubs/Press/060531.htm
Governments are supposed to consider the report, but not their citizens, apparently.
How democratic.
I wonder how much support there’d be among the European public (the people who’ll have to pay the billions upon billions of Euros for this thing) if they were told the facts about how much it will cost and how little (i.e. nothing) it will do to make them any safer in the long run.
Opposing BMD isn’t about preserving some fussy sense of exaggerated purity: as taxpayers and citizens, it’s about using our heads and watching our wallets.
Because in the states they have plants in every district making parts for the missiles and other Military goods, so no one wants to cut all those high paying jobs. The US is the largest weapons manufacturing country in the world.
“The United States is by far the largest exporter of weapons in the world, selling more weapons than the next 14 countries combined. Military sales account for about 18 percent of the national budget, far and away the greatest proportion of any other nation.”
Stephen: Then there are the Japanese:
“Joint missile defence plan for US & Japan”
abcasiapacific.com/news/stories/asiapacific_stories_1679852.htm
But of course it’s all a plot by the “military-industrial complex”. As for Canada, the US has asked us to pay almost nothing. Indeed we should use our heads.

BMD might have had a chance in Canada had the US proposed a plan without the fantasy blue/X-ray based lasers in the plan.
http://www.cdi.org/program/document.cfm?DocumentID=3576&from_page=../index.cfm
As noted by Stephen further up the thread Philip E. Coyle III is a senior adviser to the Center for Defense Information. From 1994-2001 he was an assistant secretary of defense and director of the department’s testing and evaluation, and he served on the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission. He talked with the Online Journal about the U.S. missile-defense systems, development and technology and how long it would take the U.S. to defend itself from a missile attack.
“What’s the status of the airborne laser and spaced-based systems?
They’ve experimented with a high-power laser in a 747 carcass on the ground, but this isn’t a plane that can fly. They’ve got to put a laser in an actual aircraft that flies. That’s currently in development in Wichita, Kan.. — Boeing put out a press release that they put a surrogate laser in the plane, but it turns out that it is very difficult to develop a high-power laser that can actually shoot something down. I don’t expect to live long enough to see it work if ever it will. They’ve been having lots of troubles.
The airborne laser has been close to cancellation many times. Congress has flirted with canceling it — they haven’t — but they keep funding it. Congress is aware that progress is very slow, but they keep funding it.”
I wrote a strongly worded letter to the PMO in late 2004 about this aspect of the plan; and suggested if they were relying on this to defend North American populations for missile defence, then we need some 10 million SPF skin lotion.
As to the Canadian Armed Forces rebuild refit the Granastein article was dead on. Especially presicient was his comment of recent purchase intents would go a long way to …”begin to repair the wreckage of the Canadian Forces.”
Hallelujah and hosannas indeed. This might also go some distance to turning around the recruitment picture if service personnel have confidence that they have the tools to actually do their job.
No one in his right mind signs up if they have a reasonable apprehension they are going to be ‘wasted’ due outdated equipment.

These crimes are happening in 21rst century and right in front of our eyes. This savage and dark-age behavior should be stopped. Stoning law should be nullified in the whole world, immediately. Next Tuesday is the worldwide day against stoning and yet many women and men are waiting to be stoned in..

More from the friendly type of folk who brought you al Qaeda and the Taliban:
“Pray or die, Somali sheikh tells Muslims”
news.scotsman.com/latest.cfm?id=994672006
Excerpts:
‘MOGADISHU (Reuters) – A leading Mogadishu sheikh said on Friday Muslims who do not pray five times a day should be put to death — the latest sign of a fast-emerging hardline face to Somalia’s newly-powerful Islamists.
The sheikh’s statement — which he confirmed to Reuters after it was broadcast on local media — caused consternation among residents and will fuel foreign fears the Islamists are planning a hardline Taliban-style rule.
“He who does not perform prayer will be considered as infidel and our sharia law orders that person to be killed,” said Sheikh Abdalla Ali, who runs a sharia court in the Somali capital which the Islamists took last month.’
On the whole I’d rather be in New Hampshire:

After reading the comments of the usual suspects I can come to only one conclusion. Ballistic protection vests should never have been made. After at least 65 years of developement (assuming the bomber crew version used during WWII as a start) and probable hundreds of millions of dollars in developement funds and the relatively high cost per unit, these devices “still” are not 100% effective!! Immediately cease all ballistic protection development. Remove all such vests from the hands of users so they don’t aquire some false sense of security!
Exo-atmospheric intercepts with non nuclear payloads are tough propositions but are doable. Even if only one of ten intercepts was succesfull such a system has paid for itself. Consider the value of one city center.
PS If you want to get cost evaluations don’t talk to a so called scientist, talk to an engineer.

yo, jd, personal protective vests were never fobbed off as 100% effective.
your analogy is hopelessly flawed.
do you know some vietnam vets chose not to wear theirs because of the great discomfort was a distraction and impeded their movements?
your own posting proves me right, DEVELOPMENT show me where star wars is going to be refined and modified and improved over time thru experience. experience? ya, experience in being attacked as a means of finding out where the gaps are.
but thats the fatal flaw with the suggestion of star wars. it cant really be fully tested. it HAS TO work perfectly all the time right from the start. or so the hucksters tell us it will.
the rest of your point is a variation of the ‘if it saves just ooooooooone life it wuz wooooooorth it , eeegh eeeeeh eeeeeeeeeh (smack smack).
you have completely missed the point that maybe the trillions it will cost could be better spent bribing traitors to spill the beans on attack plans, developing ever more stealthy means of tracking the bad guys and also an ultra blistering fast ordinance launchable from, say thousands of satellites to kill them.
star wars is old technology and old strategy not applicable to current entanglements.
your analogy is hopelessly flawed.
Well said, Robert: JD’s post amounts to a classic example of the logical fallacy known as the ‘argument by analogy.’
Basically, JD’s arguing that because it took a lot of time and money to create a rather successful piece of military equipment (the vest), we have good reason to hope that more time and money will make another piece of military equipment (BMD interceptor rockets) rather successful as well.
Unfortunately, neither life nor logic works that way: just because you could do X after spending a lot of time and money doesn’t mean you might also be able to do Y.
As Philip Coyle, whom I’ve quoted in this thread, has said, something north of US $100 billion has been spent on BMD efforts going back to the Reagan years (perhaps even farther back: those interested in the history of NORAD will know that it was initially imagined as being tasked with BMD efforts back in the late 1950s, according to newspaper records from the time): and yet, there’s no demonstrated capability to defend against anything.
That’s a former US Assistant Secretary of Defense saying that BMD has no proven value.
Wow.
Lots of people would like to ignore statements like Coyle’s, of course: it suits them to invent faulty analogies and fanciful scenarios under which the proposed US BMD system will save the day.
Myself, I prefer facts and evidence to the fond wishes and bad logic of Canada’s BMD-boosters.

I’ll have you know robert that I normally wore my vest in Vietnam for all the good it did since it was ballistic nylon and wouldn’t even stop a pistol slug (designed to stop fragmentation only if you were lucky). But hey you try to improve your chances WHICH is the exact argument for a ballistic missle defense system. The whole concept is not to give the other guy a free ride.
No it doesn’t have to work the “first time” it only has to work a percentage of the time. I won’t turn this into a long dissertation on warfighting theory. If you can’t see the benefits of causing the other guy to pause due to lack of confidence in his attack ability or worse case saving only 6 of 10 targetted cities from his attack then we have no common ground in logic.
Dissect my arguments as poor analogies etc. etc. all you wish. Glad hand each other on how you exposed the tired old arguments I make as trite. It doesn’t change the basic facts nor my support for at least the attempt to correct the issue.

Using diplomats as agents of terror
Regime of Terror
Captain’s Quarters has posted the translation of what appears to be an Iraqi Intelligence Services (Mukhabarat) document discussing the use of diplomatic privileges to carry out terrorist attacks.
The 2003 document (CMPC-2003-005745.pdf) mentions (among other terrorist and sabotaging techniques) using a briefcase bomb that can make it through a security check.
Use of diplomatic briefcases as an explosive device that can not be detected by an X ray device. …- more

Ok, enough time slacking off. Here*s some thought shots for grey brains on idle. Talk like that could put hair on the balls of your feet. Be careful!
North Korea*s Kimmy NutDong is getting away too much press for pouting and shaking his playpen.
That*s not to detract from a good post though.
Nutcase ** Madmud Almondjeans** is the real problem here and Lebanon is the potential flashpoint.
If radical Islam is to be supressed in favour of a more honest, humane and fair practice of the faith, moderates will have to choose and support a wholesome and moderate leader.
There has so far been no leader mentioned who could counter-balance Osama or Muctada al-Sadr… bloodthirsty killers.
I asked commentors at:
http://www.MichaelTotten.com
who that leader could be and got one possible answer, but can not find much info on him.
Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani .. Ever heard of him?
Seems Hamas is a faint second string when Hezbollah is around and they are all over South Lebanon on the North Islraeli border.
Agents of Iran. Guess **Madmud Almondjeans** is looking for a fight preferably over Lebanon and not over his home base, Iran. TG
Israel launches airstrikes in Gaza

GAZA (Reuters) – Israel launched rapid-fire air strikes against Palestinian militants across the Gaza Strip on Sunday after rebuffing a proposed ceasefire by Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas.
Israel is threatening to expand its offensive unless militants release Corporal Gilad Shalit, an Israeli soldier abducted in a cross-border raid on June 25, and halt rocket fire on Israeli cities. At least three militants were injured in an early morning air strike near the Karni commercial crossing, Palestinian medics and police said.
Israel also bombed a key bridge in northern Gaza, despite an appeal from the United Nations to stop…
