“Trace Evidence” Of Progressive Film Making

Being filmed on the University of Ottawa campus. Like Williard, but with big bad profiteering corporations, I guess. (I say guess, because I’ve never seen Williard).

Hi everybody, xxx and I have got quite a few questions about the movie being filmed in the Bioscience labs. Here is the info we have got from the producer of the movie.
For all those interested here is a little background on the movie being filmed in BSC.
“Trace Evidence” is a Canadian film being made for CTV and the US women’s network Lifetime. The Ottawa production company is Sound Venture Productions which has been in operation for over 25 years. Although this is a low budget production, it provides employment for local film technicians and actors.
Aside from the two lead performers, all of the actors, producers, & crew members are Canadian; and many are from the Ottawa-Gatineau region.
Story: The lead character Christine is a geneticist who makes a significant and profitable breakthrough when she discovers what gene causes drug addiction. When Christine announces to her husband Chuck that she plans to funnel the profits back into her research he sees his dreams of easy living going down the drain. Bored with his marriage, and eager to move on financially, Chuck and his friend Sam plot the demise of Christine. In the end, good triumphs over evil and Christine lives happily ever after with her drug addicted rats while Sam and Chuck rot in prison.

Sorry about the spoiler.

  1. Meanwhile, down the hall from the Biosciences lab, her Socialogist colleagues are busy writing the script for the sequel, in which they prove that drug addiction is caused by an improperly engineered society. They’re hoping, of course, that their production will be funded by grants.

  2. And in that sequel, a very PC metrosexual team of investigators proves that Halliburton, Dick Cheney, George Bush and a group of international drug companies are the secret global mafia of the narcotics trade.

  3. I Great….
Another unwatchable peice o crap from our Canadian tax parasite film industry to be broadcast by CTV…big deal. Pull the plug now before any more money is wasted.Since I am subsidizing this through my tax dollars which are being spent by Tellefilm….can I request that production be stopped?

  4. Don’t you damned Philistines understand art?
    Bloody Neocons.
The preceeding was a pre-emptive strike by a taxpayer who is truly sick to death of funding this type of venture.

  5. Trace Evidence of anything even remotely approaching entertaining. OTOH, at least it is $ not supporting blood/snot/spit/urine art, so it has that going for it.

  6. Apparently in the sequel it will be found that drug addiction can be reduced greatly and even cured by exposing the subject to 12 hours of the CBC, but only the radio side of the operation. The sight of the announcers is thought to be counterproductive to the cure.

  7. I can never understand why Canadian movies are such crap. We have the talent. (OK we would have to recall them from the States) We have the money.(OK it is usually tax money and not private)
Perhaps all we need is a truly Canadian action movie With a Canadian version of Swartzenegger or Bruce Willis or Vin Diesel.
Now lets try to figure out a plot… a retired disillusioned Canadian special forces soldier…No, that would glorify war. A retired big city anti gang cop…No that might promote racism. A retired NHL hockey player’s family are taken hostage by some Islamic fundelmentalist…No not very PC. a gang of drug lords…No that racism thingy again. By White supremacists and he packs up his guns…No that could be seen as promoting violence against women. Packs up his hockey stick and a bag of pucks and goes out to rescue them.
Throw in a couple of car chases, some scantily clad bimbos and a few explosions…wait car chases might entice our youth into unsafe driving, scantily clad bimbos might stereotype women, explosions might glorify violence.
You know, it is no wonder Canadian movies are such crap.

  8. …aww gee, you had to spoil it. Was looking forward to seeing another “made in Canada” grade B film again.
Where’s the subliminal advertising of Tim Horton’s coffee mugs all over the place.

  9. Why would he have to kill her to get the money? In Canada, under no fault divorce, he’s entitled to half her cash. This movie implies men are too stupid to know that, and therefore is biased and discriminatory.

  10. Thanks for nothing Kate!
I was sooooo looking forward to seeing this fine piece of cinematic expression!
Now I’ll have to watch CBC reruns until I go mad. Which watching the CBC should take 12.675 milliseconds.
Tell me why we pay for this again? I don’t understand. It’s not even the PC content (although bad enough.) It’s the fact that this stuff is unwatchable crap…

  11. Telefilm Canada has not invested in this movie; so therefore Canadian tax payers are not subsidising this production. On the contrary, the television movie is using American funds (from a US network) to employ Canadian crews and Canadian filmakers. Below is the official press release:
    TRACE EVIDENCE
    PRESS RELEASE
    May 29, 2006
MONTREAL:- Trace Evidence, an edgy thriller for CityTV, Lifetime Television and Granada International, began filming in Ottawa on May 26. It is being produced by Muse Entertainment and Sound Venture Productions.
The film stars Amanda Detmer (Kiss the Bride; What About Brian), Jonathan Scarfe (E.R.; The Sheldon Kennedy Story) and Anthony Lemke (Ricky Nelson: Original Teen Idol) and is directed by Peter Svatek (Baby for Sale; Scent of Danger). Amanda Detmer plays Christine Hartley, a dedicated scientist on the verge of a huge discovery — the genetic cause of addictive behavior. When her life is threatened by a vicious attacker in the lab, she begins to suspect those around her of foul play — motivated by money and greed. The plot twists and turns until the very last frame.
“I am excited to be working on this very compelling story in which a woman goes through tough circumstances when the most significant person in her life horribly deceives her. But she comes though in the end,” says Director Peter Svatek.
The picture is being produced by David Patterson (Largo Winch, Mind Over Murder) and Jesse Prupas (Black Widower; Mind Over Murder).
“We are delighted to have attracted a wonderful cast for this picture,” says Prupas. “Amanda Detmer currently stars in a hit series on ABC [What About Brian]. We are very pleased that such experienced actors as Jonathan Scarfe and Anthony Lemke have been able to join her.”
Neil Bregman of Sound Venture Productions (H2O, The Toy Castle) is co-producing. The film’s executive producers are Michael Prupas, also of Muse Entertainment (Human Trafficking, This is Wonderland), Judy Palnick (Murder in Mind) and Sunta Izzicupo.
