But this particular death threat is a bit different from the run of the mill hate mail we get around here, because an IP lookup on the sender reveals that he/she/it was using an account at none other than Reuters News: RIPE Whois Database: 192.165.213.18.

Then there’s the small matter of IP spoofing.
I think if you follow Charles’ investigation you’ll see that there are things other than IP addresses that point to the identity of the person who sent the email.

Nice. I doubt anything will come of it, but it would warm my heart, if it did
Why does the Reuters-Gaurdian-Islamic fantic connection not surprise me? The UK left has been uncivilly extreme for decades and I can see them welcoming with open arms the new foamy-mouthed islamic fanicism…seems a good fit to me… both are intent on deconstructing western culture and replacing it with their own intolerant idealism. The focal point for the rabid left and the fanatic Islamist Jihadis is the new antisemitism they embrace as “zionism”.
I hope MI5 and homeland security tracks this jihadi troll down and gives him a dose of justice…which in this case is not the usual Islamic beheading but simply and humanely to deport him to a country that embraces his fanatical Islamic intolerance…like Iran… maybe he’ll get there in time to soak up some isotopes in their pending nuclear fun fest.
More good stuff here by a commenter on the thread in question.

I have a friend who wrote an email to John Barber about an article he wrote for the Globe titled ‘Gun registry dying with a whimper not a bang.’ (Globe and Mail, Thursday May 18). The hatred Barber spewed against Conservatives in general and the government in particular throughout his column was unbelievable.
Anyhow, at the end of my friend’s email he quoted Barber, “Step forward Stockwell Day, Minister of Public Safety, the man who believes that dinosaurs walked the earth with humankind.”
Commenting on that statement, my friend finished with, “Using yourself as a prime example of the reptile in question, Stockwell Day is absolutely right.”
Barber emailed him back with, “If you had the guts to say these things to my face, bud, you’d get a new face.”
It seems to me that’s a threat that could be taken to the police. Does anybody have a legal opinion on that?
Relax, he’s just a stupid socialist.

Therefore, I can tell you that the north of occupied Palestine is entirely within the range of the missiles of the Lebanese resistance.
“This, of course, is the minimum. As for reaching beyond the north – the less said the better. We have no reason to say whether or not we have such capabilities. Let’s keep quiet about this.
“Today the north is within the range of the missiles of the resistance – their ports, their bases, their factories, everything… This creates a balance between the north of Palestine and the south of Lebanon and Lebanon in its entirety.”

“Today, if I appear on TV… If I am talking to you and it is aired on TV, and I say to the people of the settlements in the north of occupied Palestine: “On behalf of Hizbullah, I recommend that you go down to the bomb shelters within two hours,” they would all go to Tel Aviv.”

It amuses me when people here talk about tolerance. Apparently you haven’t read the comments in May 19’s “A Yellow Strip of Cloth” post.
Wow, Barber is pretty tough when he’s at the end of an internet connection.
UPDATE at 5/26/06 10:04:36 am:
A reply from Reuters’ Global Head of Communications:
Dear Mr Johnson,
Thank you for bringing this matter to our immediate attention. Views expressed in messages are those of the individual sender except where the sender specifically states them to be the views of Reuters Ltd. However, Reuters takes incidents like this very seriously indeed, and we have started an investigation to determine whether a Reuters employee was involved.
Yours Sincerely
Ed Williams

Someone with the same IP address, registered to Reuters, has been responsible for “vandalizing” entries at Wikipedia: User talk:192.165.213.18. (Hat tip: Tommy.)

A Reuters Employee Threatens the Wrong Guy
Earlier today, Charles Johnson of Little Green Footballs emailed us about a death threat he had received, apparently from an employee of Reuters in London. It’s a complicated story; you can read it all here. LGF got an email from the obviously fictitious address, “zionistpig@hotmail.com.” (“Zionist pig” is revealing, I think.) The subject heading was: “You bunch of wankers.” That jumped out at me; to my knowledge, the only people who use the word “wanker” (Is it a word? Beats me.) are left-wing bloggers and their commenters. This was the text of the email:
I look forward to the day when you pigs get your throats cut….
I would not, personally, consider that a death threat, although it’s certainly an unpleasant message. We’ve gotten a lot worse from liberals, and I’m sure Charles has too. Nowadays, that’s pretty much how liberals talk.
What struck me most about this episode is how technically skilled Charles is. The poor buffoon from Reuters who sent the email never knew what hit him. Charles was able to trace his IP address around the globe, and it quickly emerged that the miscreant was Inayat Bunglawala. This column by Bunglawala–an extraordinarily silly column, postulating that Christians and Muslims can get along if Christians just give up on the divinity of Christ–was apparently the source of the problem.
Another thing that struck me is that Bunglawala, notwithstanding the fact that he considers “Zionists”–what was that code for, again?–to be “pigs,” and has himself written extremist articles, according to Charles, was chosen by the British government as one of seven “conveners” for a Home Office task force responsible for tackling extremism among young Muslims.
Charles complained to Reuters; Reuters promised to look into the matter; and the latest word comes from Reuters’ Head of Global Communications:
Following your email regarding the posting of an offensive message that was sent from a Reuters IP address, I can confirm that an employee has been suspended pending further investigation. The individual was not an employee of Reuters’ news division.
Yours sincerely
Ed Williams
An interesting episode. Charles could have a second career tracking down liberal hate-mailers. There are lots more where Mr. Bunglawala came from.

Maz2, thanks for that very informative 8:33 PM posting.
So Reuters actually suspended somebody! I hope we get some follow-up information on this. I’d love to read that the miserable twerp, whoever he/she is, gets named, shamed and fired.
Dave:
“Reuters employee, Inayat Bunglawala,”.
Reuters will not name Bunglawala. Reuters says he was not an employee of the news division.
Could he be an employee of Reuters’ hate-mail division, e-mail division?
Was it Inayat Bunglawala?

Reuters Death Threat Update
Last night I requested more information about the person Reuters says they “suspended” for sending me a death threat, but so far there has been no response.
Meanwhile, the Reuters IP address 192.165.213.18 (from which I received the threat) has hit LGF 9 times today, most recently at 8:48:04 Pacific. And these aren’t random page hits—they all go to the entry about the threat. For the full story: A Death Threat from Reuters (Bumped).

“Wanker” is a word. It is a colloquial insult very common in certain anglo countries like UK, Australia and New Zealand. It has nothing to do with politics or leftism.
It basically translates as “masturbater”.
“to wank” = “to masturbate”
This Inayat Bunglawala guy posts from UK. He’s actually Media Secretary for the Muslim Council of Britain.
I hope Charles from LGF nails his arse.
Reuters Death Threat Update 3
The Reuters IP address that was used to send us a death threat has visited LGF 15 times today. This doesn’t necessarily mean that Reuters has not really suspended the person responsible (as they told me), but something odd’s going on here because the hits from this address are not random at all. All of them go either directly to the post about the death threat, or to one of the other LGF entries linked at the Guardian’s page with Inayat Bunglawala’s article. There are no visits from this IP address to any unrelated LGF pages.
The most recent hit was at 6:31:09 pm Pacific time, and it went directly to the death threat post.

Meanwhile, at 11:40 pm last night, someone used an anonymous remailer in the Netherlands (with the address nobody@dizum.com) to send the following email:

In an additional twist, Johnson traced the movements of the sender of the threat, and found direct parallels between the internet locations of the sender and Inayat Bunglawala, Media Secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain.
Bunglawala, who contirbuted an editorial to the Guardian website, has attracted negative attention in the past after making anti-Semitic outbursts, and has declared that the British media was “Zionist-controlled.”
In the comment section of the Guardian, underneath his own editorial, Bunglawala denied sending the threat, blaming “Zionists” instead.
“That was not me! Methinks some Zionists are up to mischief,” he wrote. …

While this may be a red herring, observe the following from the article:
“In an additional twist, Johnson [the owner of “Little Green Footballs” blog] traced the movements of the sender of the threat, and found direct parallels between the internet locations of the sender and Inayat Bunglawala, Media Secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain.”
Reuters Death Threat Update 5
The Reuters IP address 192.165.213.18 has visited LGF 20 times since midnight Pacific, going to either our post about the death threat, or to the front page. Once again, this is not random activity; whoever is using this IP is watching our posts about the threat very carefully. Some of the hits are referrals from pages where there are articles about this incident containing links to LGF, such as this Ynet News article: Reuters employee issues ‘Zionist pig’ death threat. (Note: the article has been updated with some comments from me.)
Reuters Global Head of Communications Ed Williams told me that the person responsible had been “suspended” pending investigation. The fact that this IP address is still visiting our site does not necessarily mean that Reuters was not telling me the truth. The IP address could be that of a router, being used by more than one employee. However, it’s a fact that almost all the hits are going directly to our post about the threat, and this is certainly cause for suspicion.

UPDATE at 5/30/06 9:21:31 am:
There have been two more hits from this IP address since I wrote this entry, both referrals from the Guardian page where Inayat Bunglawala wrote:
That was not me! Methinks some Zionists are up to mischief. via LGF
The following is a message from the Canadian “Zionist Network”. ..
Call after call from prominent UK Zionist organisations demanded meetings with the organisation to ‘discuss the incident’. The news spread and appeared in the Zionist press from Canada to Israel. (Now you know what we mean by a well oiled Machine!). A Muslim leader was about to fall, and they all knew about it and were relentless.

Raging Paranoia at Muslim Public Affairs Committee UK
I think I should be flattered by MPACUK’s completely insane article about the LGF Reuters death threat incident, because they’ve decided there’s no way LGF could possibly be the work of just one Zionist madman: MPACUK – Breaking News: Calls From Around The World Demand MCB Inayat Be Sacked! Mosques & I-Socs Silent?
Apparently I’m jacked into the central nervous system of the worldwide Zionist machine. Heh.
MPACUK has always said that Individual Zionists may do some harm to the Muslims, but in reality, any major attack on a Muslim group or leader is co-ordinated, even if it seems like it’s coming from an individual. The attack on Ken Livingstone for example has all the hallmarks of a planned and co-ordinated attack. It may have taken months if not years to plan and organise, the public may have seen a furore around him then, but you can bet your bottom dollar that was the tip of the ice berg.
Zionist Blogs too, are too well researched and co-ordinated to be the work of individuals. No part time nut could watch every minute for any slip by a Muslim group as vigilantly as they do. Most probably they are part of a well funded central network. They are another weapon in the growing armoury of the Zionist machine that is deployed against the Muslims.
…
All you can do is laugh at these clowns, but in truth they’re not very funny at all. Here’s an lgf search for “MPACUK,” bringing up a history of sick antisemitism and hate speech.
(Psst. Don’t tell MPACUK about this. They may believe they’ve discovered one of the astoundingly well-researched nerve endings of the Zionist central nervous system, but the terrible truth about LGF just might cause their heads to explode.)… LGF
This is dedicated to Canadian Sentinel. Sentinel: Do you have your ears up?….
Reuters Death Threat Update 8
Over at MPACUK, they’ve updated their paranoid rant—with an open admission that my suspicions were at least partly correct: MPACUK – Masajid and ISOCs Silent As Zionists Move In On Inayat Bunglawala!
According to MPACUK, the death threat did indeed come from the Reuters facility where Bunglawala works, which I believe is the Reuters Dockland offices in East London. MPACUK reveals more information in their article than I’ve gotten from Reuters.
“See with your own eyes that I am standing here firm and determined, and I will not flee” Khalid Bin Waleed. Today we can reveal that Inayat Bunglawala the pro Palestinian Media spokesperson for the MCB has been the target of Zionists around the world, in an onslaught that began last Thursday (25.05.06), in an all out campaign to have him sacked from his job. Someone had sent an offensive email from the same workplace to a Zionist Blog. The person who sent the email was indeed suspended last Friday (26.05.06).
The Zionist machine as organised and well funded as it is, tracked it back to the work place of Inayat.
Actually, I didn’t know for sure until you confirmed it, MPACUK! Muchas gracias!
Now the central nervous system of the Zionist machine sent an alert around the world. Thinking they had him trapped, they launched a world wide campaign to have him sacked.
They end with an appeal for help against the tentacles of the omnipotent galaxy-wide lizardoid conspiracy:
If you feel this is no big deal then you are on the wrong website, please re-direct your reading. If however you are shocked at the powerful nature of those who attack you, and are more angry at the incompetent nature of those who are currently supposed to be defending you then fund us, or join us. Together we can protect men like Inayat from the most powerful enemies Muslims have faced in a thousand years.
Bwa hahahaha!

Reuters Death Threat Update 9
Writer Tom Gross has been following the saga of the death threat we received from a Reuters employee, and he has independently confirmed that Inayat Bunglawala, media secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain, works for Reuters as a senior systems engineer at their Docklands offices in East London.
Reuters “Zionist pig” death threat update.
Following the previous dispatch, Reuters employee issues “Zionist pig” death threat (May 30, 2006), several journalists have asked me to confirm that Inayat Bunglawala is an employee of Reuters. He is. Bunglawala, who also serves as media secretary of the Muslim Council of Britain, and in the past has made various anti-Semitic comments, works as a senior systems engineer in the Reuters Docklands offices in east London.
In the last two days, the influential Muslim Public Affairs Committee UK (MPACUK) has rushed to the support of Bunglawala, even though Bunglawala has strongly denied any involvement with the anonymous death threat sent from a Reuters computer to the publisher of the Little Green Footballs blog. (Bunglawala did refer to Little Green Footballs in a comment he posted under his name on the website of The Guardian newspaper a few hours before the anonymous death threat was also sent from a Reuters computer; hence some suspect him of being the sender of the anonymous threat too, or at least being near or in contact with the sender who also used a Reuters computer.)
MPACUK has in the past included images from neo-Nazi journals on its website. In August 2005, the MPACUK website featured an image of a supposedly “Jewish” monster with horns holding up the American flag. Sources tell me that the image came originally from the web site of the neo-Nazi magazine “National Journal.”
MPACUK has also vilified supporters of Israel “accusing” them of being Jewish, such as former British Labour MP Lorna Fitzsimons (who is not Jewish).
In the last year, MPACUK has also republished articles or quotes that originated from the extreme right-wing newspaper, the American Free Press, and from David Irving’s website.
Note: this is not proof that Bunglawala used our contact form to send the following message:
I look forward to the day when you pigs get your throats cut….
However, he probably knows who did….
