For The Sake Of The Children

Canadian waistlines are expanding. With excessive weight a strong contributory factor to the serious health problems that strain our beloved universal health care system – diabetes, heart disease, and joint degeneration – there are underlying issues that can no longer be ignored.

It’s time to address the issue forthrightly – and ask ourselves if those who choose to be in the public eye do not have a personal responsibility to set an example for other Canadians.
It’s a question that affects the health of every Canadian and it’s one we can no longer avoid;

  1. Bruce S,
I see you are in a state of anger … raised blood pressure, angry, unable to think straight … full of contempt. I like that.
Also, just how fat are you dude?
I am quite old now and I eat properly, excersize and look pretty good actually. I am also prosperous and can afford to eat quality food. I like cooking too.
There is only on fat person in my entire family and he knows it’s unattractive and unhealthy and is doing something about it.
You called me many names that are actually irrelevant. Why don’t you work on increasing your limited vocabulary and call me something horrible, but entertaining.
I fail to see why simply finding obesity disgusting (since it is a self-inflicted wound) can be considered bigotry. It’s called having discriminating taste in human physiology. We all have the freedom to pick and choose what we find attractive and what we find unattractive. That is called freedom of choice.
Now you go try and get your arms around your wife or boyfriend and forget all about this nasty upset I have caused you.
    hahahahahahahahahahha

  2. Well William, I thought I knew what you meant until your last post. Wow. Actually maybe kids/adults should come to terms with “what” or “who” their problem relates to. Including bad attitudes, drug use, depression, learning disabilities, sexual dysfunction and many other pschological conditions caused by physical, sexual abuse, bullying, family break-ups, alcoholic and/or one parent families. dead-beat dads who leave their fat wives for skinny girlfriends and deny their kids emotional and financial well being. Is it any wonder kids are screwed up?

  3. Re: William Macdonell’s 3.00pm comment, and
Re: Vitruvius’s 1.54pm quotes from Julie Child
Gentlemen – we are in a distinct minority. Feel free to invite me for dinner.
The central issue behind the whole “health and nutrition paranoia”? An utterly pathological fear of death. “Their god is their belly”, indeed.
Kate – See what happens when you stop posting for so long? The subtlety of your wit seems to be lost on us.

  4. Simple Wayne, I’m a selfish bastard and don’t have any.
Frankly, I hate kids. I can fully appreciate other people loving them, but until they are around 6 or so, I want nothing to do with them. It’s better being an Uncle… I can get the little buggers all wound up, and then send them home to torture their parents:)
I do appreciate the difficulties in raising children, I have many nephews and nieces myself, and they still eat well, they are very active, because their parents are. Their parents are all professionals, who spend many long hours at work, but still they feed their kids real food and give them opportunities to spend time at play and sports.
In the end, preparing good food is not hard, nor time consuming, you just have to make the decision to do it.
I can get a steak dinner, with a baked potato, and an oil based Ceaser Salad ready and on the table in 20 minutes. How long does it take to spoon the crap Ceaser dressing out of a jar.
My Ceaser is simple, and healthy:
    1 egg yolk
1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil
    1/8 cup of Redwine viniger
1/8 cup of Martini Mix (Red)
3 honken big garlic cloves crushed
    Teaspoon of Magi
    Teaspoon of Lemon Juice
    Teaspoon of Whorchester Sauce
    Few splashs of Tobassco
Bam babie, you have a kick ass Ceaser (This recipe serves 4).
I cheat with the Baked potato, by nuking a couple for 5 minutes, then I finish them on the barbaque with the steaks while they cook.
Bacon for the Ceaser, nuke for 3, finish in a frying pan (takes a couple of minutes).
Grate some parmesan, chop some chives for your potato, put out some sour cream and butter (never, ever use margerine… that stuff is poison in a tupperware container)
Use Romaine, spin it yourself… it’s not hard.
Spagetti Sauce is even simpler. I don’t know how many people I meet eating that shit sold by Raggu.
2 Yellow Onions (Dice them and carmalize them)
Pound of ground beef, pound of ground Pork, pound of ground Veal. (pitch it all in after your done onions, cook up until well… cooked)
20 good sized Roma tomatos (dice them)
5 big ass garlic cloves crushed
3/4 bottle of decent Cabernet Sauvignon… doesn’t have to the best, but the better it is the better it tastes.
Fresh Basil… don’t buy dry, it tastes like shit. You will truly know the difference between the fresh stuff and the dry stuff.
Let it reduce for an hour to an hour and a half and you can serve it up. The above makes about 10 servings. My wife and I eat one each, freeze the equivalent of 2 servings in a freezer bag, for another day.
The best time to start is on a Saturday morning, by 6 at night the sauce is decadent. The longer it simmers the better it gets.
Really though, how hard is that recipe? Best part is you can the remains of the wine while your putting it all together.
Broil a Chickenbreast and throw it on top of the Ceaser salad.
Thinly slice a Red Onion, add Chopped hothouse tomatos, and some chunks of Goats Cheese, throw a dressing of 1/4 cup Red wine Viniger, 1/4 cup Virgin Olive oil, mix two together until blended, with a little salt and pepper in it, and boom… 3 minutes later you’ve got another kickass salad.
Food is easy, if you think alittle bit about it. It doesn’t take long to broil, or to boil, and just a little longer to bake. Throw out your deep fryer, and give up on instant… you’ll love yourself for it.
It starts with Mom and Dad… monkey see, monkey do.

  5. One other thing, stop adding salt to your food. It’s already got salt, it doesn’t need more unless it’s in the cooking stage, or to prepare meat prior to cooking… stop adding it after your food hits the table.

  6. William – Hey could you come be my personal chef – yum, yum, yum. Maybe you could send us all out a menu a day through Kate’s blog – it would be great – you alone could be responsible for lowering the obesity of Canadians (myself and my husband included – somehow over the years, our clothes have shrunk – if this damned snow and wind would go away, maybe we could get out for some exercise after we eat your delicious meal!!
    Thanks Wil.

  7. Whoa, what an assortment of comments to comment on. Where to start?
How about the word “lardassedness”? I don’t think it is in my Funk & Wagnall’s but I love it.
Anyone who took the poll seriously and thought the 70% who wanted Mike Puffy off TV were serious should get a grip of themselves and look up the term “sarcasm”.
I too have served for many years and am more than a few pounds off of fighting weight. I also know that the chicken-fried steak and Ben & Jerries icecream for dessert means I have to go for a longggg walk after supper.
Most people today are turning into tubs of lard and part of the problem is laziness. I remember when I was young (and dinosaurs roamed the earth), from after school until dark the whole neighbourhood was filled with kids playing, etc. Ever see a neighbourhood hide & seek game lately? I’ve watched as mothers drive little johnny and jane to school down the street. Seriously.
I too have overweight and even obese friends and collegues. I also worry about them dropping dead from washing down that pizza with a diet soda.
Happy Birthday alberta girl. you don’t look a day over 39.
bruce s, clean up your frickin’ language. The only person you are impressing is yourself.
    Welcome back Kate.
    amen and pass the ammunition.

  8. Then there’s the other side of media hypocrisy, Kate moss for example who was recently shunned for her drug use, and sikenly skinny. I know a number of VERY LAZY people with terrible eating habits who never gain weight because of their drug use. Like I said it’s what’s inside that counts. ‘Nuff said, but a sad day.

  9. i wonder if when mike said john duffy threatened him during the election , that he actually tried to take his triple cheeze pizza away ? or a six-pac of jelly donuts ? or maybe an extra large double double ?

  10. As I tell everyone who asks, my husband quit smoking 50 pounds ago. How many others have gained excessive weight by quitting that unhealthy habit. What goes round comes around, and in the future smoking will be hailed as a great weight loss method. Wonder when Libby Davis will be questioned about her weight. Seems to me Winston Churchill was rather rotund.

  11. I don’t think it’s just laziness, it’s strategically encouraged laziness. Do you think General Foods, or Nabisco, wants you to learn how to cook? You wouldn’t need them anymore if you did.
How is a person supposed to know what to buy, when the Grocery Store is 85% crap lining the shelves. If they didn’t sell shit in a can, you wouldn’t get a chance to buy shit in a can.
It’s our governments fault at the end of the day.
You can’t tell whats genetically modified at the vegetable counter, they aren’t legally obilged to inform you.
Soybean, the ultimate meat filler, Edible oil products, cause real food just doesn’t make sense. God forbid the mass’ eat a piece of real cheddar… they’d never sell cheese slices again.
All these people who believe that eating meat is wrong… We’re Omivores for christsakes… our bodies need the iron found in red meat. Eat chicken until you throw up, it still won’t give you the level of iron and protein found in a steak. Just don’t eat 24 ounces of it a day…
All the glorious naturally made foods out there, and people feed their kids cheesiepoofs.
God forbid you push a vacuum around, or wash a floor by hand, or scrub a toilet bowl. Why do that, at a cost of a few cents, when I can spend $35 dollars on this plastic sweeper that squirts amonia out ahead of it, which doesn’t really pick up shit anyway, or buy this chemical cleaner that says it keeps the bowl clean for the week, when it actually runs out after 3 flushs.
My niece whined the other day because her 6 inch portable DVD player wasn’t working, out of batteries, when I told her to read a book, you’d have thought I said “Santa is Dead”. Good Christ, what would they have thought of Black and White TV… or no TV?
Sorry, I’ll shut up now, it just really piss’ me off that people short change themselves so much, and in the end it’s our institutions that are promoting them to learn to ignore the truth, and get brainwashed by the advertising.

  12. Cheeses I’m Eating This Week:
    Irish Dubliner
    Smoked Austrian Gruyere
    German Appenzeller
    English Cheshire (Artisan)
    English Colston-Basset Stilton
    Now that’s multi-cultural.
Seriously, those cheeses use different yeast cultures.
I do have a tobacco problem though: my pipe’s gone out.
Fortunately I have enough varieties and quantities of ethanol in stock to make that stress free. Oh, and salt too, especially on potatoes cooked in lard.
You do realize that the four food group are caffene, nicotine, alcohol, and lard, don’t you?
Oh and don’t worry about your precious health-care system, I’m planning to die too, and without too much fuss. After all, given how well I’ve lived, it would be a shame to spoil it all by dieing ungraciously.

  13. Regarding kids & obesity, the next time you’re in the freezer aisle, pull out a package of waffles geared at adults, then compare to one with cute kidsy looks. The fat content is significantly higher in pretty much every “kid-oriented” food there is (similar with canned goods).
While I’m all for healthy cooking, school lunches aren’t so easy. Yes, when time permits I’ll do up a batch of home-made pizza pops & home-made soups, but that’s not always an option. Luckily my daughter is very energetic (& skinny), but that very high energy & skinnyness lead to bad eating habits (“it’s ok, she’ll burn it off”).
My point is, parents need to read the labels of what they are serving, and make sure that for every frozen entre sent in a school lunch there’s a corresponding cup or so of fresh fruit as a tradeoff, and fruit juices instead of sodas, etc.
Edmonton schools now enforce daily PE and have removed all sodas from the machines, but the “energy drinks” are pretty high calorie. Kids truly need to get off the couch more (with their parents).

  14. 1 Timothy 4:8-9, “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that now is, and of that which is to come. This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.”

  15. Your screwed Vitruvius…
that’s a perfect recipe for living until your 90.
Take away my car, take my house, just don’t take my single malt and stogies (well, Spanish coffee too, wouldn’t want to miss breakfast).
“His liver has left the building”.

  16. The bartender at the deli where I eat breakfast said this morning that she’s not a vegetarian because she loves animals, she said she’s a vegetarian because she hates plants.

  17. Most of the MSM aren’t smart enough to realise that Stephen Harper is about substance, not style.
They are so used to the Liberal dog and pony show that they don’t recognise a real human being when they see one.
CTV had one of their pieces of fluff doing a story about Harper’s image problem because of his weight and how to handle it. It was hilarious watching her trying to make a story out of nothing.

  18. Just to lighten the mood around here a bit…
( boy this discussion can get testy… I personally like the observation above ” When are they going to question Libby Davies …and I believe that Winston Churchill was rotund”)
    Right on…gotta love those comments.
seems to me prejudices are showing quite openly
    in some of the comments.
Back to lightening up the mood:
    We should ALL be Newfies!!
“A Newfie was terribly overweight, so his doctor put him on a diet. “I want you to eat regularly for 2 days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for 2 weeks.
The next time I see you, you should have lost at least 5 pounds.”
When the Newfie returned, he shocked the doctor by having lost nearly 60 POUNDS!
“Why, that’s amazing!” the doctor said, “Did you follow my instructions?”
The Newfie nodded…”I’ll tell you though, by jaesuz, I t’aut I were going to drop dead dat 3rd day.”
    “From hunger, you mean?”
    “No, from skippin’ !!!!!” ”

  19. Well the truth is each one of us can serve as a bad example in some aspect of our lives. I guess the goal needs to be that we serve effectively in more good areas than bad.
A lot of good points have been raised except poor “snowbunnie”. Her saying it’s the pharmaceutical manufacturer’s, food manufacture’s fault is the typical “it’s someone elses fault” dogma. Life expectancy in Canada is ten years longer now than it was 45 years ago in spite of the cigarettes, transfats, TV, etc. It is in the pharmaceutical companies interest to keep you alive well into your old age. Who consumes their products—-20 year olds or 70 year olds?
The recent Family Practice Journal looked at childhood obesity and studies show that physicians and health care providers that are obese are less effective in councelling obese children than normal weight councellors. So there you have it, guys and girls, take the responsibility, whatever interaction you have with our youth.

  20. Don’t be difficult, Dante. Try substituting yourself, and see if the joke is still funny.
For example: An engineer named Vitruvius was terribly out-of-shape, so his doctor put him on an exercise regime. “I want you to eat regularly for 2 days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for 2 weeks. The next time I see you, you should be much stronger.
When Vitruvius returned, he shocked the doctor by having gained nearly 60 pounds. “Why, that’s amazing!” the doctor said, “Did you follow my instructions?”
Vitruvius nodded… “I’ll tell you though, while it is certainly possible to perpetrate interminal dissertations of paraphrastic circumlocution, I t’aut I were going to drop dead wit all doze 2 days.”
“From lack of exercise, you mean?”
“No, from all dat regular eatin’.”
Anyway, my pipe’s alight again, and I’ve just carved off a few various slices of stinky cheese to go with my fresh Pilsner. Y’all have fun now, y’hear.

  21. Why should we hide fat people under the rug as someone said? That does nothing to alleviate the problem. Obesity comes, in part, from the tech age. Think about it. We drive everywhere, we sit and watch TV. We live in the age of luxury. In the olden days (not meaning to date some of you) people had to work hard to get food and the basic needs. That makes a difference. Parents can bring their kids up to eat healthy and exercise but not too much else can really be done unless the individual is willing.
Another thing which should be pointed out is that not all overweight people are lazy. For some it is a medical condition. Not everyone, but for some and I think that should be kept in mind before we go judging.

  22. Vitruvius:
Yep, don’t be afraid of harsh cheeses just EDAM and GOUDA!!
Those Life of Brian chaps were on to something:
    “Blessed are the cheesemakers.”

  23. Be not afraid of Edam and Gouda, Hans, it is the young cheeses that are difficult to stomach, no matter their breed. It is simply a matter of structuring things so that as far as possible you only have to associate with older, wiser cheeses. Such aged Edams and Goudas are certainly available, as is the case for varietal cheeses of other cultures.
Still, with saskatoon jam on hot white-bread toast dripping in melted butter, mature Edam or Gouda both do fine for dessert at breakfast.

  24. I think we should have open forum each sunday, when news production is at a low. Is there another reason PMSH’s waist is the topic of discussion?
These comments have been excellent. And recipes too? way cool..
black and white Tv? but… blood is red !
and my favorite… If God didn’t want us to eat meat, he wouldn’t have made animals out of them…

  25. The version I heard, Marc, was, “If god didn’t want us to eat ruminent bovine quadrupeds, why did he make them out of steaks?”
Perhaps that’s why I’m skeptical about the whole god-thing: I believe there are only three cuts of meat: tenderloin, brisket, and sausage.

  26. Vitruvius:
“The less people know about how sausages and laws are made, the better they’ll sleep at night.”
Otto von Bismark, Germany’s First Chancellor

  27. Saggy Stephen: A Round Up

As it turns out Stephen Harper can now add ‘saggy’ to his growing list of defining adjectives. (See also scary and secretive.) CTV broke the story that Stephen Harper is fat. Although I’ve seen fatter. Kate sees this expansive problem

  28. Well said Anon, Cheri and Snowbunnie, What we do with our bodies AFTER the age of 19 is our business. Making fun of overweight people is cruel and childish. I think people become overweight and underweight and out of shape or muscle bound because they are BORED. For many people the only aspect of their lives over which they have any control is their bodies so they are obsessed with bodies and body functions. BORING. Vitimins are great for keeping a person healthy – and as snowbunnie says they are necessary because our foods have been altered. I think the kids are bored too, they are overfed, overprotected, spoiled, demanding, ignored and viewed as PROPERTY not people. Our nation needs some INDEPENDANCE for all people, including kids, and with independance will come responsibility and respect for others (who do not all look like fashion models).
Have a quick look at the people who lived here in the early 1900’s – fine figures, cute kids, a dog or two, lots smoking, most wearing a hat , some packing a gun, …..all idependant with no sneering busy body of a state telling them how to live their lives in a play by play lecture right down to what you can and cannot put in your mouth (that sort of preaching was minimized to Sundays and some ‘at home’ nagging). We need to grow up in this country. BTW I think if Stephen Harper looks like Winston Churchill it is a GREAT thing. I think that people in their forties and later who are obsessed with weight are not happy, young people usually look good because that is the way the Lord arranged things so that we could attract mates.

  29. mike puffy should have his fat butt removed from the tv. if he is placed on radio please gag him first along with his pal jane taber.
mike could try for a part in the next austin powers movie…. he could be a stand in for fat bastard

  30. Gee, if we’re looking for politicians who are setting a good example of fitness, seems to me President George W. Bush is the man! He is one of the fittest Presidents in living memory. Don’t suppose CTV would ever point that out to the viewers.

  31. It is certainly the case that of all the people I have known, the three most technically overweight have been three of the most kindest, goodest people I have known. And they tend to be great dancers too.
I’ll let y’all in on a secret: it’s not the weight, sex, or breed of a person that matters in judging their character by apperance (which is a priori difficult), it’s the set of their eyes and mouth. Works for other mammalian carnivores and omnivores too.
The only problem is, a single observation only hints at mood, it doesn’t disclose character. That takes multiple visual measurements under varying contexts, and fortunately or unfortunatly, that is not available in text media.

  32. Great point, Chris:
“Gee, if we’re looking for politicians who are setting a good example of fitness, seems to me President George W. Bush is the man! He is one of the fittest Presidents in living memory. Don’t suppose CTV would ever point that out to the viewers.”
Now if they REALLY want to set an example, they should get around to passing that constitutional ammendmant to allow Arnold Schwarzenegger to become president…..
    THERE’S an example for ya….

  33. Let’s not gloss over the Belinda thing. I remember during the Conservative leadership convention she was wearing a whitish beige pant suit that accentuated her big booty and thunder-thighs. Good shoes don’t make yer arse look any smaller!

  34. I haven’t had time to read all but, maybe that’s why the chef was fired! Good reason not to have to pay him out! Good pic on the Puffman. Besides PMSH has probably not moved from behind the desk trying to figure out the mess(s), Paulie made.

  35. jema54:…”making fun of overweight people is cruel and childish”…
As I read this thread, I started a number of times to respond to the not so hidden whiff of sanctimony displayed by some of the posts. I’m a newbie to the SDA world and have enjoyed it. I’ve seen some great posts on important world and domestic issues that face us and am identifying those who are always good for a chuckle and/or those who will steepen my learning curve.
I must say, though, that I’m less than impressed with the mean attitudes displayed this time. As someone pointed out there are many reasons why people are overweight and a person’s weight issue is, more times than not, a symptom of something deeper.
I can handle good debate and sharpened arrows where deemed necessary or to simply spark an enlivened dialogue. But I, personally, stop at saying something that is mean. Don’t mistake this for my own sanctimony…
    jena54…thanks for activating my keyboard.

  36. Well if 70% say they want Duffy removed from the sight of their children, it raises the question as to just how will they remove him?? :))
And next, will the same means of removal be applied on said kids’ overweight parents?

Liberals threaten to sue Conservative MP for his comments on sponsorship cash

The federal Liberals say receiving money improperly isn’t the same thing as stealing, and they’re threatening to sue a backbench Conservative MP to prove it. The Opposition party has fired off a lawyer’s letter to Ottawa-area MP Pierre Poilievre for not making the distinction last week in a radio interview as the Tory spoke about the sponsorship program. “We’re certainly asking him to apologize formally, and that doesn’t mean in a small way,” said Liberal party national director Steven MacKinnon yesterday. “If he wishes to speak on such matters, he should develop a bit of political maturity, read the Gomery report and, if not, we’ll see him in court.” Mr. Poilievre hasn’t decided how he’ll respond to the letter. +

  38. Maz2:
An excerpt from my letter to the PMO at the end of May 2005.
“Moreover, we have the following announcement made on May 25th, 2005: The federal Liberals would consider ignoring a House of Commons defeat should they lose any of the several coming votes that are matters of confidence between now and the end of the spring session, Chief Government Whip Karen Redman says. !!! We wont be taking any lessons from the Parliamentary pedants who inhabit the government benches.
The aforementioned statement in effect suggests that we will inaugurate a period of taxation without representation. I congratulate the Chief Government Whip for renewing and modernizing the 1837 Rebellion. Perhaps we should be loading our muskets with ball and shot right about now; given the government has departed the democratic mortal coil.
I gather we now have the rationale for the ill reputed gun registry.
Ms. Redmans statement has to number among the most inflammatory and incendiary since the demagogues mounted the Bema on the Pynx, Acropolis.
But an attempt to turn the right of election into such a farce and mockery as a fictitious fine and recovery, will, I hope, have another fate; because the laws which give it are infinitely dear to us, and the evasion is infinitely contemptible.
. I see no other way for the preservation of a decent attention to public interest in the Representatives, but THE INTERPOSITION OF THE BODY OF THE PEOPLE ITSELF, whenever it shall appear, by some flagrant and notorious act, by some capital innovation, that these Representatives are going to over-leap the fences of the law, and to introduce an arbitrary power. This interposition is a most unpleasant remedy. But, if it be a legal remedy, it is intended on some occasion to be used; to be used then only, when it is evident that nothing else can hold the Constitution to its true principles. Edmund Burke, THOUGHTS ON THE PRESENT DISCONTENTS
This government has passed on! This government is no more! This government has ceased to be! This government is expired and gone to meet its maker! This government is a stiff. This government is bereft of life, this government rests in peace! If you hadn’t nailed the government to the perch it would be pushing up the daisies! The governments metabolic processes are now history! The government is off the twig! The government has kicked the bucket, the government has shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the choir invisibile!! This government has had its lot, it is no longer, it is expired, it has departed. THIS IS AN EX-GOVERNMENT!! (With apologies to Monty Pythons parrot sketch.)
Auguring the potential establishment of a dictatorship, per the residual power of the crown per S. 91(29) Constitution Act 1867 to suspend all Charter Rights per S.33 of the Constitution Act 1982 is hardly in keeping with the Westminster Parliamentary tradition. As the Queen and public might be want to say: WE are not amused.
To paraphrase one Globe and Mail editorial: The government would spit in the face of the Queen, Parliament and the people and call it respect.
Edmund Burke might make this observation: “Those who have been once intoxicated with power, and have derived any kind of emolument from it, even though but for one year, can never willingly abandon it.”
Some Internet bloggers, have even gone so far as to suggest: Where is Guy Fawkes when you really need him?
Perhaps a more apt description of our government is Rump Parliament harking back to Oliver Cromwell. The only difference being that now one must adhere to a corrupted secular rather than religious orthodoxy.
My family has over the course of five generations variously survived the machinations of Bismark, Kaiser Wilhelm II, Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, and Erich Honnecker. We will be taking no more lessons in despotism and blind stupidity, as we have completed our historical tour of duty. We have greater self respect than mere cannon fodder of ages past and have the medals to prove it.
Well if the unlearned government has passed into the self-styled role of the Philistines of Parliament; we will simply have to declare ourselves freemen and freewomen of Canada. So government now proposes taxation without representation; or rather simply theft of democracy itself. By the Chief Government Whips own statement to defy future confidence votes, we have become a stolen nation. But seeing as the government has been doing this on the sponsorship file it comes as no surprise. Quite frankly, you can take this proposition straight to Hell.”
Well if you can’t tell your government and ex Prime Minister Paul Martin to go to Hell; then your democracy is deader than the parrot in Monty Python’s sketch.
So brown envelopes passed, ficticious invoices for no work performed, and proposing not to observe confidence votes isn’t theft of democracy?
I suggest the LIEberals go review the definition of theft.
A criminal act in which property belonging to another is taken without that person’s consent.
The term theft is sometimes used synonymously with larceny. Theft, however, is actually a broader term, encompassing many forms of deceitful taking of property, including swindling, embezzlement, and false pretenses. Some states categorize all these offenses under a single statutory crime of theft.
So out of $350 million a $100 million goes completely AWOL under the LIEberals watch and voters are supposed accept this wasn’t theft when the Auditor General and the Gomery Report clearly indicate it was theft from the public purse. Please spare the prevaricating nonsense,
this is political posturing pure and simple in complete defiance of the facts presented by the Auditor General and the Gomery Report.
It is pretty obvious that the government let insiders help themselves to the government till with carefree abandon for a period of approximately 10 years with little or no controls. Why the hell should taxpayers accept unrelenting and unrepentant abuse of the purse?
Gomery himself suggested people were rightfully angered and disgusted.
To the LIEberals, bring on your lawsuits! What a bunch of vacuous airheads. Then these rubes announce they won’t respect confidence votes. Well if you thought your vote didn’t mean anything before, these twits would make sure it means nothing in perpetuity.

  39. I have not read all these posts but I think all this coverage on fat in Canada will translate into the usual overriding concern for Government.

    Taxes.

How can a starving government medical system take funds from a prospering food industry?

I say we should just put a scale at city hall and tax PEOPLE (not food) by the pound. -sarc-

  40. i sent ctv.ca that poll about mike duffy .i i thought they’d put it up since they poll damn near everything going . don’t see it anywhere though. don’t they have a sense of humour ?

  41. Well said Hans Rupprect!! I call the Liebrals thugs, theives, crooks etc. often – they have not sent me any court papers yet. Mr. Polivere is much more intellegent than ten Liebrals AND their lawyers. It would be a comedy to watch Mr. Polivere pulling their strings. They would be bouncing around (verbally) like the yo-yos that they are.

  42. Isn’t is amazing what a free health system will do?
When you don’t have to worry about going bankrupt from the bill of being in the hospital for only 2 days, you can just let yourself go.
Go to California where I lived and watch the illegal immigrants. Those suckers work hard. Why? I’m not sure. But if I had to worry about a hospital bill wrecking my future dreams of owning a home I’d probably be cautious too.
That and parents. Those damn, lazy, stupid, do nothing, Oprah watching, consumerism parents. Go ahead, feed your kid those potato chips an hour before supper. After all, they are low in fat, no trans fat, low in cholesterol, fortified with iron, and your favorite olympic athlete is their spokesperson. Mm, mm, good.

  43. I said it before, and I’ll say it again. We are at the root of the healthcare crisis. We eat and live the life we want, then when things break, we tell the doc “fix me”! Now in my forties, I find that I carry an extra 10-15 lbs. I know it’s MY problem. I don’t get enough exercise, and sometimes I can’t be bothered to eat right. So, if I realize my shortcoming on this, I know I can’t be the ONLY one contributing to the health issue. WE are the ones ultimately responsible for feeding our bodies. I drive a semi, and I see fellow drivers every day that make “the Puffer” look thin! Co-workers have asked me for tips on keeping the weight off. Here’s what I’ve learned:
It’s not so much WHAT you eat, as also HOW you eat. When you deprive your body of food or water, it goes into “storage” mode, because it thinks food/water are scarce.
    1. Drink LOTS of water… your body will not store any, infact it will be looking to get rid of it. The same thing happens with food. Starve the body, and it’ll put everything you eat into “storage”
    2. Eat breakfast… a HEALTHY breakfast.
    3. Pack a good sized lunch. The idea is to “snack” all day. Eat SEVERAL small meals during the day. Those baby peeled carrots, sliced orange/grapefruit, bananas, apples, a FEW cookies, yogurt… you get the idea. By doing this, you won’t be FAMISHED when suppertime arrives.
    4. Seeing as you aren’t famished when supper hits the table, pour a glass of red, and talk with the spouse, or family. This slows down your eating. When people “shovel it in”… it takes 10 mins or more for your system to tell your hunger “I’m full”.How much more does one eat after they are full? How much more did we eat in that 10 mins? Eat until you are NOT HUNGRY… if you don’t finish your plate,so what!? wrap it up and put in fridge.
ALSO…. you will find that when you snack all day, your supper portions will be smaller. Start with soup and salad, you wont have tons of room left for mash & gravy, steak etc.
Yea, eating the sweets and stuff is more fun, but you WILL pay a price for unhealthy eating. In fact, we are ALL paying now, for joint replacements, diabetes etc.
Eat proper, eat sensible. It’ll improve your mental health, and your physical health. AND, it’ll improve our healthcare system!! Oh yea… it goes without saying… you need to be active too. Do whatever physical activity, as long as it burns calories. *grin*
