Cindy is just giving a little social activism to a view held by the majority of Americans. She wants the troops home tomorrow most others say within a year. Any way you look at the majority of Americans have had enough incompetent leadership on the Iraq front to cause them to want it over. Yes, even the soldiers(70%).

“Indefinitely” means for an undefined amount of time. “As long as needed” therefore qualifies as “indefinitely.” If you don’t want to pick a year or less, and you don’t want to pick “as long as needed,” there’s no other option.
And if you’d polled me in Vietnam, S. Korea, an undisclosed area of Central America, W. Germany etc.. I would have also wanted out within a year or less as any sane soldier would (yes that includes W. Germany since I was allways assigned to border units like the 11th ACR). Hell I volunteered for re-assignment to Korea simply to get away from Ft. Knox Kentucky once. If you’d “polled” me at the time I definetly would have wanted pulled out within the year and probably would have recommended above ground nuclear testing of the place after I left:)
The answers given in polls depends upon the question and I’ve yet to see any of these highly professional polls volunteering the “exact” questions they used. If someone wants me to believe in the stats from a poll they need to show me the full list of the “exact” questions.

Cindy, Jack and others who hold their same sympathies are missing a perfect opportunity to demonstrate their true commitment to peace.
Travelling to Afghanistan/Pakistan/Iran and convincing the fascists to lay down their arms would prove their peace activist credentials once and for all.
Western voters wouldn’t support ongoing military operations against a group that has disarmed and declared peace, the war wouldn’t last a minute longer than was necessary.
Our troops, NATO troops and American troops could all come home – that would be a huge victory for peace activists. So everyone should be urging peace activists to go there and get the job done.

As far as the poll, you have to pay to see their methodology. Dictionaries are a poor debate tactic. Semantics can cover up all the blemishes of penny’s wild generalizations.

How come so many are signing up for additional missions if they all think they should leave in under a year?
Why use the word “plurality” instead of giving a real number? Isn’t that what polling is about, semantics don’t come into play? There is nothing debatable about a number, whether it’s 72% or 58% or 24% – We all know what those numbers represent. The confusion comes when we either don’t know the question(s) asked, or we do know the question(s) asked and it appears to be a push poll. To top it off, we have a “plurality” instead of a number.
Sounds like pretty crappy polling, or reporting thereof, to me.
I haven’t liked a zogby poll in years…he had Kerry with a big win. His work for the Post is crap to me.
Economics, marriage failure, cash incentives, are also reasons soldiers are re-signing for another tour. Maybe they’re not all clear why it’s Iraq but they believe in something.
I think there is some kind of loss lead where you can be re-toured whether you want to or not.
I was under the impression that you sign up for a set period (I think 2 years? depending on your goals, i.e. if you want to be trained as a nurse you’d likely have to sign up for 4 or 6 maybe?), and you don’t have too much choice about where they send you. However, you don’t have to re-enlist, and (I’ll look for the links) I remember reading somewhere that they have very solid re-enlistment numbers (I should have used re-enlist vs sign up for another tour).
If the US military has over 1,000,000 people (I’ll try to find THAT link too) and somewhere between 100-200,000 in Iraq, that means there are 800,000 elsewhere. I would think that, depending on your position & skillset, the odds might be in your favor.

How many of you have ever been polled by Gallup or
others. I am sure I am on the speed dial of a pollster (3 times in 20 yrs) during elections. It was funny. First time was when Preston Manning was leader, and for every question, I answered, The reform party or Preston. Each time I was told, sorry, that is not acceptable as they are not on the list. When the results come out headlines said, Reform didn’t register with voters. I called the n/papers, TV and radio to ask if they had read the questions. They said I possible had this poll mixed up with another one, and how could I be so sure it was the same poll. My answer, I was polled on my birthday, date hard to forget, the poll was taken from the day before to day after. Then they all said, it was not their job to question results, just publish them. From that time on, I have never believed polls. I have also followed a- man in the street- camera crew, in a Mall, questioning citizens on opinions govt decisions, guess what, when watching the news, only one view come thru, even tho I had watched the majority of those questioned giving an opposite view. Now, everyone wonders why results of elections etc are so different than polls say. Could it be the Internet and blogs.
