  1. What I dont’ get is the kids and people standing around the artillery shell, posed as a missle.
Pretty good shape considering the rest of the place is a mess. Subliminal message? More than one hit this place full of kids and old men.
(Yes I know about dud artillery shells, even brand new ones in the casings -you can kick them all you want as long as you don’t rotate the firing pin.)

  2. Hey Kate, here are a couple of other “why’s”
    1. What gender is the gopher
    2. What does a volcanoe cam in Washington gotta do with Saskatwecheanien?
    3. Are you really as cute as the picture?
    …i feel a ban coming on…
    😉

  3. I wonder if anyone has noticed that the drop in circulation at the NYT as well as most other MSM rags parallels almost exactly the rise of high speed Internet access. It has been said that the Internet is changing the world. It is, in fact, ushering in a new kind of person, one who is able to get the facts for himself without having to rely on someone else. This means that these “new people” are making the decisions for themselves that news anchors and editors used to make.
The MSM is changing so fast that most of those involved cannot see it. These are the ones who will disappear over the next few years. Good riddance.
For news of all kinds on the Internet it is the blogs that are leading the charge. They made a difference in the last US election and they’re making a difference here in this one. The world will never be the same. That, as Martha would say, “is a good thing.”

  4. Kate;
Just watched latest news on CTV Newsnet at 1700 hrs. They had 2-3 minute smarmy updates on what each party leader was doing today. They covered the Liberals, NDP and Green Party – not a word on the Conservative Party.
And these people call themselves professionals and unbiased.

  5. it is definitely an artillery round, most likely a 155mm, but the Russians have a 152mm that looks same-same.
note the band at the bottom of the round . . think they call it the driving band, it is made of softer metal/copper that makes contact with the lands & grooves in the cannon barrel and gets it spinning.

  6. “Why”? I know why and can hardly muster a tear.
If you are stupid enough to have “Arabs” in non-Arab Afghanistan/Pakistan as house guests at this time in history, I guess you risk a blown-up house. Duh!!
Of course, the NYT’s is perplexed by this. Standing on the wrong side of history in the WOT (as they were with Communism)they have much more to suffer in stock price, thank God.
Citizen’s journalism on the internet is killing the MSM as they are quasi-religious zealots that would rather fall on their swords than reform (ironically similar to Islamofascism).
The NYT’s can’t go broke fast enough.

  7. Very interesting
about the shell, such things have a limited range
is the village within shell shot of the border?
if not this was fired within the country
so maybe not US at all?
As to the NYT aren’t these the same rags that cut
    wayyyyy back on news staff
or as our beloved Conrad Black
    used to say
you don’t need journalists to run a newspaper
why buy a newspaper for fluff

Rotator band made of brass and you’re correct. The round had been fired and was a dud. It appears to have impacted soft ground (probably farm land since there’s no scouring near the point which you’d get from small rocks in untilled land)at some other location (also only the mild, thin steel of the fuse component is damaged) As far as 152 soviet or 155 nato it’s been a long time so I can’t properly swear from a photo anymore but I don’t remember soviet stuff using yellow markings and I vaguely believe the length aspect is different on their rounds.

  9. I am not a military expert, so I just rely on common sense. The staged photograph looks to me to be a dud artillery round, not the ammunition that an Predator un-manned aircraft would deliver. Besides, the round is in remarkable shape considerring the damage suggested.

  10. Mr. Crittenden, you’re right again.
I’ve noticed that the MSM has been unusually more scrupulous and less spinny than in other elections I’ve watched.
These are my own observations. Perhaps you’ve a different reading so far. But I was surprised at how not-as-anti-Conservative the MSM has been so far this campaign.
I believe it’s a direct consequence of all us bloggers out here keeping an eye on the MSM and keeping them honest. They know they MUST shape up… or eventually be forced to sell out or fold due to declining circulation/audience/advertising revenue. There’s a new “invisible hand” out there now. It’ll slap MSMers who get stupid and overly partisan. They must have begun to get the message. After all, just look at how much less Liberal the T.O. Star has been this campaign.
Or perhaps the MSM realizes there’s a real change of gov’t coming and they don’t want to be on the Tories’ bad side? After all, the Tories will have the power to make changes in how the MSM may operate and hopefully will open it all up to free competition via the scrapping of or serious downsizing/reform of the fascistic CRTC.
How can anyone, after all, argue against free competition in the media? We do want freedom of the press, after all…
The MSM must change. No longer can Canada stand a virtual stranglehold on the dissemination of information by a very few, very powerful elite corporations whose ear the Prime Minister has so far been able to bend (’till very recently, perhaps?).

  11. Get Pauli Martini to BAN them! Charge the bystanders with POSSESSION! Send several dozen of our LAWYERS over there, ( at taxpayers expense), to DEFEND them! It’s the ‘Canadian Way’!

  12. On the other hand, the US MSM has freer competition; case in point: Fox News. Yet the leftist MSM outlets haven’t evolved and consequently, due to the NY Times’s false reporting as we see shown by this post, it’s experiencing a shrinking readership.
In a market economy, the consumers determine who’ll survive and who’ll not. Pity the moonbat media…
My own blog has increased in views each month since I put it up. Each month is better than the previous. I’m already almost at December’s record total and will surpass it this month.

  13. Two points here.
These goat herders who have declared war on the west can eat my missiles all day and all night. I just don’t care what happens the head hackers anymore. This is a war people and shit will happen time and again. I don’t know about the rest of you but I want us to win .. not them .. us! Simple concept .. we survive they may not .. at least not in their present state of mine.
Second point: I have a bunch of Quebecor shares .. they produce newsprint. I told my ‘guy’ to sell them last October when I became convinced the news was all on it’s way online. Who needs the dead trees in their recycle bin anyway. I mean if I really need to how much cars are, I can go to the dealer of my choice .. who are .. all now on line. My ‘guy’ failed to sell them and they are now down 40% and I am considering a law suit if he doesn’t compensate me for failing to fulfill the sale order. The point is that .. the largest supplier of newspaper stock in the world is down 40% and I see no reason why they will come back up unless Al Jezeera starts delivering.
There are a lot of recent journalist school grads who would have done better to take a lot more computer courses so they could be effective in the future. Of course how that most bloggers are doing is as avocation rather than route to the senate, it’s getting harder to find work for those socialist hoards.
Besides .. the war on Socialism is just heating up .. It’s finally run it course and have been shown to be a loser enough times that it’s too hard a sell in a country where people can at least read and write.
Maurice Strong’s greatest hopes may be finally and completely dashed with the election of Stephen Harper in a socialist bastion like Canada. Even the sheep are tired of getting fleeced in the cold north winter.
Don’t anyone dare take me to task on the successes of the Scandinavian Socialist models .. their funding comes directly to marketing high end consumer products in the wealthy western capitalist countries like the USA, and more or less Canada, Europe and Australia, New Zealand plus other pockets of wealth here and there around the globe. They aren’t selling Volvos, IKea furniture and Hasselblad cameras to commies.
Okay .. I am of to watch the season opener of 24 and pour a nice Johnny Walker to toast Jack Bauers return to the idiot box.
    Night Night.

  14. I wonder if the shell came happened to be from an ammo dump or “carbomb factory” that was sitting inside the “safehouse” that was hit? (Guess the safehouse wasn’t too safe was it?… 😛 )
Probably not a great idea for those people to be playing with UXO either…

  15. the last time the MSM thru CBCPravda reported about artillary rounds they called it a homemade bomb. implied ,of course ,that in Iraq it is a homegrown resistance movement.
The fact that it was manufactured shells with an electronic detonator seemed lost upon them as they have it in their small minds that Iraq is an occupied nation in worse shape than when a dictator was cutting off their nether parts when he wasnt gassing them.
    shame CBCpravda, Shame MSM.
    the bloggers are watching you.
ps — when does the hit rate on Smalldeadanimals exceed that of CBCpravda. soon methinks.
bye bye Kneel MacDonald and Peter Pansbridge.the leader of the fantasy world.

  16. My impresssion too was that if a few more of the al-Quaeda leaders are targeted and preferably, killed, people who harbour them will begin to say, “sorry, the kids room is now a sewing room -we just don’t have a place for you in Damadola. Why don’t you try Ahmed ben Bajur in the next province.
Make it lonely out there for terrorists.

  17. Judging by the dazed looks of everyone around the artillery shell maybe it’s a sequal to “The Gods Have Gone Crazy”.
Loved that old film done in South Africa, but it’s not politically correct to show it anymore…
Instead of raining down Coke bottles, now it’s green uh…I know, this is a stage prop from “Under the Planet of the Apes”.
    cheers
    tom

  18. Kate:
Bruce Rolston (http://www.snappingturtle.net/flit/) has a very good discussion on this. BTW – Rolston has a military background in Canada and is sound technically.
“Upshot: the round in question was certainly not fired as part of the airstrike in question (it’s artillery, not air-to-ground ordnance, and unfired at that). Which then begs the question, why *would* the individual in question have been storing artillery rounds near his house where they could be brought out for the photographers? Does the picture not tend to impeach the claim in the article, that “the victims were local villagers without terrorist links?” This particular fellow would certainly seem to be linked to something.”

  19. Thank god the NYT gave you something to talk about other than all the innocent people killed.

  20. What are you people talking about, get to the point, I’m lost by all the smearing and inuendo that it makes me sick that people will lower themselves to such levels. That includes you Kate, take your NeoConservatist babble to someplace where ordinary Conservative minded folk in Canada don’t have to see it. I get the feeling that the polls have emboldened you to come out with your extremeist viewpoints. Get a Life.

  21. Yes, we’re very cold-hearted conservatives here. Nobody cares about the people killed.
    /sarcasm off
Of course, that’s not the issue we’re discussing here, is it?
Duke, that’s why you’ve got to trade your own stocks, if possible.
We have “The Gods Must Be Crazy” I & II on DVD – it also includes a documentary about N!xau, the lead actor, his real life and what it was like, how the films affected it, etc. Helps you to see what a good actor he really was. II is okay but I is a darn funny film!

  22. Re Lenny’s remark “Thank god the NYT gave you something to talk about other than all the innocent people killed.”
Lenny, first, all the coverage – from entities at all ends of the spectrum – indicates that anywhere from 10 or more “foreigners”, “Arabs” THAT MEANS TERRORISTS – were in fact killed. An Al Qaeda imam even spirited away a bunch of bodies before the Paki authorities got there.
So, it’s very much up in the air if there were in fact any innocent casualties. And, referencing the above informed comments, this is a large artillery shell, not a Predator Hellfire missile.
What are “innocent bystanders” doing with large artillery shells? Who brought them to that village? Why? Why is it so clearly and convenieitny posed for the camera? Think very hard about these four questions!
Sadly, this is a Global War on Terror. It was NOT the West’s choosing that the Islamofascist terrorists choose to hide out in the midst of innocent Paki farmers! Just as in WW2, there are sometimes unfortunately civilian casualties in the process of destroying our fascist terrorist enemies.
So, Lenny: Yes, this is a war. You can sit on Cloud Nine, burnish your halo and “tsk! tsk!” that innocent bystanders MAY have been some of the casualties.
But the Big Picture is that a significant number of the right people were killed.

  23. A couple of years ago, I was treated to a news story.
    Correction.. a so-called news story.
Something the media outlet, The Edmonton Journal felt I HAD to know. No it wasn’t rumours about CIDA or Guite et al.
No, my friends the story on page TWO(2) was how the former US President Clinton’s dog…got run over.
Well ever since , the Mainstream Media doesn’t get a break from me, I’ll tell ya.
Pompous arses, the lot of them.
And I cancelled my subscription, to boot.
    I don’t miss them …not a bit.
    …clintons dog…for christ’s sake…

  24. That sure is a pile of rubble. Shouldn’t they be holding pieces of blackened twisted metal?
What does an intact round have to do with all the extensive damage anyway? TG

  25. Its good to see that someone noticed that it was an artillery shell and not a Piece of a missile!

  26. Today’s media does not care about getting all the facts straight, as long as the rag goes out on deadline. Btw that shell has never been fired… no grooves in the drive ring from what I can see… methinks somone in that them hut had a stash of 155’s… wonder why?
