Actually I think its worse….the gun comes up after a picture of Stephen Harper and the gun is pointing to where Stephen Harper was……implied assisination.

Ironic, since it’s Stephen Harper who pledges to cleanse the streets of gun crime, not the Liberals. The Liberals, however, are counting on people to be irrational, uncerebral and fearful.

The Liberals created the conditions for the daily gunfire to flourish and grow. They closed border stations, let murderers and other baddies go free to acquire American-sourced handguns via the black market (just like they get illicit drugs), so… here we go.
It’s the Liberals’ fault. What the hell message are they trying to say with the ad? Why doesn’t Paul Martin properly come forward and eludidate his specific message, with proof and reason and logic? ‘Cause he can’t w/o admitting the whole thing is the Liberals’ fault!
And I see the Liberals are trying their hardest to be really “inclusive” in this particular ad… /sarcasm off

Although supportive of the Conservatives & longing to rid the country of the Liberals’ arrogance & corruption, I don’t accept misleading people for the sake of THE CAUSE, no matter where it comes from. The ad as posted on SDA and on the Liberal site are totally different. It is items like these that make the “undecideds” run for the hills

I don’t think it is different at all. The montage of images is designed to elicit an emotional response from the viewer. Putting the images together in this way is quite clear. Small innocent child + Harper + guns = (with the viewer providing the answer).
There is no question that this montage was very carefully designed to elicit a response; the sequencing was not haphazard.
All Kate did was to extract the essence and fill in the caption that the Libranos expect the viewer to feel.
I’d like the whole story sometime in the immediate future. Like the whole ad.

I saw that message twice in the space of a one-hour show that ran on Space channel yesterday evening, so I imagine it is rotating on other channels and networks.
The brazen falsehoods of it are contemptible. (As for Canadians in Iraq, there were in fact a few dozen on exchange programs, one of whom was in command of a U.S. Army division in combat for a time – and the Marines sure like those Canadian-built LAVs).
It should say “vote Liberal AND the kid gets it.” – that would be more accurate since they don’t want to control criminals.
Also interesting in the ad (I watched without audio to focus on the images).
Sorry, but I took a course in advanced primate behaviour in university so bear with me.
There was quite a contrast between the pictures of Harper and Martin. Martin did not look like an alpha male in any of the pictures. He looked confused and distracted and the open eyes made him look threatened and weak.
In contrast the Harper pictures looked powerful. They ran the one with the open mouth Harper (a threat gesture), but really all this did was reinforce the image that of the two, Harper was the alpha. Lesser monkeys don’t threaten alpha males, but a simple threat gesture usually keeps the lower ones down.
While it is clear that someone looked carefully at montaged images they missed big time on the things that everyone will see (but not necessarily know).
I’m watching, in the background, a program on the Historly Channel, in which there is shown colour film of the last days of the British Raj in India. It strikes me that the Liberanos are the inheriters of the British Imperial attitude. The attitude seems to consist of “milking” (and bilking) the colonies for everything possible. In the case of the Liberanos, it’s Canada that’s to be “milked.”
A Liberano win will do more to foster Western Seperatism than anything esle. Never mind what it would do to Quebec staying in Canada.

In today’s Toronto Sun Newspaper, it is mentioned that when Amon Jamal Beckles got whacked at his friend’s funeral, he was carrying a ‘jamaican holster’, (a head-rag shaped to hold a pistol)- but the gun wasn’t on him, because his gangsta friends had removed it before the police arrived.
It is also rumoured that there were people in that church, ( at the time), who were aware that the killer of his gangsta buddy,(Jamal Michael Hemmings), was also there at the time.
Since both Beckles and Hemmings had previous convictions for robberies, there is reasonable grounds to assume some truth is attached to another rumour- that they were both killed for pulling robberies on the turf of a rival gang!
On the same subject: Andre Thompson, (arrested at the Castle Frank Subway Station shortly after the shooting on Yonge Street for packing a handgun, has been charged, (along with his 17 year old gangsta buddy)- for firing into the crowd on that occasion. (Thompson was already out on bail for a previous shooting).
In court, Thompson claims that he “didn’t pull the trigger”- but he won’t say who did. (So- perhaps he is a wannabe gangsta, carrying the piece for the maggot who fired it?
The pundits can play with this until the next occurrance, but there is one critical piece of information that will never appear in our newspapers- the LEGAL COSTS of defending this scum! (Just in case anybody is wondering why this is happening in the first place!)

I think you have SDA confused with a political party. I am an ordinary voter.
The ad was directed towards me in an attempt to sway my vote.
They wanted to send a message. I’m responding, but saying “message received”.
If the Liberals object to how their negative ads are interpreted by ordinary Canadians, they should take it up with the foks who dream them up.

Kate, I too am an ordinary voter, far more ordinary than you. You have a keen intellect, a way with words, and a powerful tool – your blog. Having recently discovered SDA, I have read your Roundtable postings on CBC with interest, exclaiming “yesss!” at things that needed to be said expressed so cogently and persuasively.
However. I think your posting of the Liberal ad is misleading and distorts the intent of the ad. Wait! I’m on your side! But … isn’t your posting very similar to the Neil Macdonald so-called “Reality Check” on the purported Tory tax increases? Giving only part of a story is distortion, in my books.
Nowhere in the ads I viewed on the Liberal site did I see what I saw on your site: an innocent child with a gun pointed at her head.
Despite all the Liberal dirty tricks, past & present, and likely to come, Conservatives and their supporters do not need to sink to THEIR level of manipulation. IMHO, they need to demonstrate that integrity is indeed part of their very being. Like Joe Friday of “Dragnet” fame used to say: “Just the facts, ma’am.” And THAT is far better ammunition.

Talking with a northern bud yesterday and I must say Harper has an uphill battle. All the crap of the last 12 years has people thinking that all politicians are the same therefore what’s the difference and the CPCs are the same as the Mulroony gang, who didn’t impart a warm fuzzy feeling when he left.
The kicker is that he says “Let’s see what they do before I vote for them.” And this guy is no socialist treehugger either.

The ad has probably been pulled from the Liberal site, that’s probably why you can’t find it. I went to look, and it isn’t there. I think that graphic is a bit too elaborate to be some fabrication by this blog. And what possibly could the “whole story” be? There’s a picture of a gun pointing at a child’s head. No matter what else is associated with that, it’s tasteless, and probably a sign of how desperate the Liberals have become.
It would seem that any criminal in need of a handgun should go see the Liberal Party of Canada. They seem to have access to all kinds of them, judging by the ads they put out.
Just on CTV Monte Solberg has just announced that he is formally asked Shapiro to launch an investigation into breach of trust into the PMO office Min of Finance and staff. This is seperate to the investigations alreay taking place: RCMP CSE and OSE. We knew that Monte had a few plans still! I am glad, the pressure must be kept up on the income trust scandal.
The senseless Boxing Day shooting will be to Harper’s campaign what turning back a boat load of Aghanistan refugees was to John Howard’s campaign. An inflection point which gets everyones blood boiling. The populace wants some action, not the current Liberal inspired “we’ll give you 20 benefits of the doubt hug a thug”.

But… to get to “the facts”
1. This was a photo-montage done by a professional. The calculated intent of the montage is to create a visual story and an emotional impact on the viewer.
2. The image of the girl followed by images of the leaders contrasted and then the gun was clearly calculated to suggest that the girl would would be at risk if you voted against the Liberals.
3. The conclusion that the ad developer wanted you to reach would be that if you vote Conservative you would be personally complicit in any violent harm that might come to the child as a result of gun violence.
What Kate did was deconstruct the message to its essence. She did not leave out any of the salient points. By showing her version it points out clearly what was implied by the ad in a way that we can understand it at a non-emotional level and realize the extent to which the Liberals are attempting to move the electorate with fraudulent emotional messaging.
Also as we see here and on Monte Solbeg’s blog, humour is an effective counterpoint to this crap.
I know this is a bunch of BS, but the liberal spin on their website regarding tax policy kick’s ass over the conservative party’s agenda. For example; GST vs lower income tax deductions.
Me being a student and an owner of a sole proprietorship, I fall into the demographic where I can write off GST on personal expenses, and pay myself a wage where I fall into the lower income bracket where their tax deduction gives me an extra $400.
–Unfortunately, because of the way our taxation laws work, it is actually in my favour NOT to make more income because I would be raised into a higher bracket and I would not be eligable for subsidies/rebates; therefore I would end up getting paid and equal amount for the same time I would spend working vs sitting on my ass doing F-all. Go figure….LOL–
It’s funny because I am a minority who has the resources to take advantage of this, but I recognize that this is wrong and I really hope Canadian people see the flaw in this taxation system. If everybody was an accountant the system would be bankrupt

Last campaign the Libs ran an ad of a hand gun pointed at the viewer and had a flash light up the screen. That was the worst. When you are brought up being told never to point a gun at anyone then the Martinites point a gun at every Canadian who has (or watches) a TV then the time has come to end the Liberal Power Play. It may have swayed voters last election but we can’t let it happen again.
Keep up the pressue on the corrupt and hopefully they will sit on the sidelines while a new Govt. will sick the Auditor General and all of her auditors, and the new ones the PM promised, onto the Gun Registry, HRDC, Native Affairs, etc, etc.
At one time the word “CANADIAN” was respected all around the world, now the word “canadian” is more of an embarassing term.

Do you think a lot of people in Central Canada will be influenced by this child/gun message? If its electorate is rational and well-informed (an assumption we all make in a democracy), the answer is NO. However, if the assumption is not correct, then anything goes. So, it is going to be very interesting to see the final results when the rubber hits the road on January the 23d.
It is ironic that these political adds smack of the days of the very Nazi regime that we in Canada are so proud of having helped eliminate. The use of propaganda on a big scale used by Joseph Goebbels the minister responsible for Propaganda in the third Reich … I thought we learned a lesson then. Does history repeat it self?
