  1. Why is there a mention of “version two” beside the advertisement link? “One Leader (version two)” January 7, 2006

  2. Pat O’Brien, Liberal MP, London-Fanshawe:
Is Pat O’Brien a “big stupid old cow”, Duke?
    Not.
“In order to explain fully my decision to leave the Liberal Party, I must refer to the hearings of the Justice Committee on same-sex relationships and the definition of marriage. These extensive hearings occurred between February and June of 2003, and I was a Liberal Member of that Committee.”

  3. Those of you who object to the restructuring of this ad have obviously never been fans of parody.
Kate’s version brings to mind a cover of The National Lampoon magazine circa late 70’s early 80’s.
A heavily made up beauty with a puzzled look on her face and dressed in a french maid’s outfit is seated on a stool with an arm extended holding a gun to her head.
The caption at the bottom of the page reads
“Buy ziss mazine or we shoot zee french ooker”
Lighten up folks. The parody is the point.

  4. Elsie Wayne has one vote just like every other Canadian. She speaks for herself. That the msm brought her up at all is just Liberal desperation. Their ship is sinking and they keep throwing life lines, hoping against hope that the masses will save them. The conservative position on ssm is clear. MPs of all stripes will have a Free vote, unrestrained by Party policy. Elsie is a red herring.

  5. One pauses to wonder if the Liberal spin-masters have some grounding in the myths of the ancients. (See Robert Graves – The White Goddess – a tome not for the recreational reader – and its discussion of the universality of the White Goddess tradition)
The theme plays well in many cultures. The triple goddess is portrayed in her first incarnation by a young girl – the maiden – symbol of hope, renewal, all which is good and pleasing.
The second incarnation is red: Mother; nurturer, comforter, and teacher; the desirable aspects and responsibilities of adulthood.
The third is black; the crone, the layer-out of the dead.
The implication of the advert is that the White Goddess is threatened – this pulls primitive strings in all hearts, regardless of race or culture – because the White Goddess is common to everyone. Perhaps not overtly recognized, but one of those subconscious forces within the human mind and part of the unspoken heritage that make up the underlying ‘feelings’ in us all.
Think of the world-wide angst at the death of Princess Diana, or the passing of Marilyn Monroe: Both losses of the then-embodiment (unofficial – elected by common subconscious consent) of the White Goddess.
Our Liberal friends have dug deep into their repertoire of smear to suggest that a father of such a maiden (Steven Harper) would destroy his own White Goddess by opposing their ineffectual and illogical response to a real problem.
When ones record condemns the purported solution, it is clear the Liberals must substitute strong emotion to fill the vacuum created by absence of reason.
This advertisement suggests a sinister manipulation by their Department of Propaganda that is beyond the limits of reasonable contest. If Paul Martin condones this approach, it speaks to a decency deficit greater than the Democracy Deficit he promised to eliminate.
A plague on their house: This is more proof that we do not need these shameless manipulators with their hands in our pockets and on the levers of power.

  6. why not use the kid that is screaming whilst PMPM explains healthcare wait times to 5 year olds??

  7. Synchrodox,
“Those of you who object to the restructuring of this ad have obviously never been fans of parody.”
Granted, the “Vote Liberal or the kid gets it.” caption is reminisant of the Lampoon cover, I don’t see restructuring in how Kate has presented the item. The frame sequence is correct and factual in her animated gif.
The editor synchronized the visually impacting images with the verbal exclaimation points ‘the other (leader); will put us into deficit.. would have ruined the economy by going to Iraq… will cancel a non-existant daycare program… won’t ban already banned handguns… Kate is simply pointing out the juxtapostion of those images and responding “message received”.
As for Gabby not “getting it”; I suppose there are still people out there that think Mutual of Omaha’s Wild Kingdom was shot in one take.

  8. Shit. I didn’t get a double post, instead the one I wanted to post is gone an the one I thought I nuked is up complete with spelling mistakes.
    Double Oh well…..
    Syncro

  9. Maz2 you slag my comment … with this ..
    Pat O’Brien, Liberal MP, London-Fanshawe:
Is Pat O’Brien a “big stupid old cow”, Duke?
    Not.
    However …
Is he yelling about it on National radio two weeks before the election?
It’s about timing. I don’t support gay marriage anymore than you do, but I do want to see the CPC win this election with a possible majority so they can actually affect some change.
You don’t start drinking the champaigne while you are still in the home stretch.
Plus, once you make the point that you don’t want gay marriage, you will have been duly noted by both sides of the issue. Get to work in the back ground to make the changes and don’t sink other poeples ships in the process.
Is that a difficult one to understand?
    NOT!

  10. Hard to believe they are that desperate to put an ad out with those images. I can’t imagine they know how truely revolting they are, this voter can smell their fear
Claude Dauphin got what millions of dollars to “save” Canada can’t remember signing any cheques, probably because the money came in plain manila envelopes, a Liberano M.O. Quebec license plates have the motto “we remember” perhaps they should read ” we can’t remember”
    Bwa haaaaaaaaaaa

  11. The Definition of Insanity:
Doing the same thing this year as you did last year and expecting to get a different result.

  12. Another Liberal party video (found at http://www.liberal.ca/multimedia_e.aspx?id=60)
warns Canadians of what is at stake in this election:
    “Here’s what’s at stake:
“More progress for our First Nations People
“Standing up for Canada’s softwood lumber industry
“Tax cuts for low and middle income Canadians
“Helping farmers hurt by the BSE crisis
    “Making post-secondary education more affordable
    “Strengthening our military
    “Ensuring better workplace training
“Helping immigrants begin their new lives”
Let’s take these one by one.
“More progress for our First Nations People”
Yay!!! The Liberals are going to let First Nations people have clean drinking water!!!
(Apparently nothing in the Liberal plans for Inuit and Metis people, but hey, they’re going to be busy with that whole water thing.)
“Standing up for Canada’s softwood lumber industry”
And we remember how successful they’ve been at that the past decade!!!
“Tax cuts for low and middle income Canadians”
And I can tell you, that $390 is going to go a long way! Why, it might even pay the extra GST I’m paying with the rise in fuel costs of late!
“Helping farmers hurt by the BSE crisis”
They weren’t hurt, folks. They were devastated. Many were ruined. And the government did squat.
    “Making post-secondary education more affordable”
So here it’s all right to put the money directly into the student’s hands, but if we put it in the hands of parents, the world will end?
    “Strengthening our military”
I wonder how the families of those who have died because of the criminal negligence of the Liberal government in providing safe equipment feel about this?
And I wonder how the soldiers captured in the video feel about being used in a Liberal propaganda video?
    “Ensuring better workplace training”
Government doesn’t ensure anything, unless it directly delivers it. And even then, that would be a doubtful outcome.
“Helping immigrants begin their new lives”
They have somehow managed to jump through the hoops of a needlessly complex immigration system, waded through reams of paperwork at the border, found their way to homes and communities and jobs – and they need the help of a corrupt and faithless government to begin their new lives?

  13. “Why is there a mention of “version two” beside the advertisement link? “One Leader (version two)”
Scroll down. You’ll see there was a prior version which is presumably still airing in some markets.

    Hello, Barnstormer:
I hardly think it’s a question of “not getting it” on my part. You’re doing exactly what people who support the Conservatives have been objecting to from the Liberals & their media: misrepresenting the facts. In case I didn’t make myself clear enough: the ad I viewed DID NOT show a gun pointed at a child’s head and to present it as a fact is a distortion of reality. Regardless of whether it was Kate’s interpretation or deconstruction or whatever other verbiage you want to put on it, the side-by-side pictures I saw on the SDA site were NOT in the ad I viewed, and no number of put-downs or allusion to my naivete will convince me otherwise.
Gotta love your “Wild Kingdom” reference.

  15. Listen folks, I’m from Central Canada and I get it. Unfortunately, in Ontario we had a Tory government that went nuts on the law and order agenda. Built new provincial prisons and tossed the criminals in there to pay their dues. It hasn’t helped much as you can see from recent gun violence in Toronto. I’ve visited prisoners in the new jails and there’s not one prison that will rehab anyone. OK, so they do their time, but what do we get back after that? We had this get tough Premier Mike Harris, who thought he was invinsible. Next thing you know, our Ontario Provincial Police are implicated in killing a native on a reserve because he (Dudley George) was stopping them from encroaching on their sacred grounds. The cops shot him on his reserve because he and others stood in the way. The shooting was not just. Voters in Ontario see the Liberal corruption, but we also know that we’re not at the OK corral. They’re concerned that right wing politics will create policy that’s even worse than the crap we’ve been taking from Paul Martin. We voted the Provincial PC’s out and got Liberals instead, so now we have McGuinty lying to us. Blatent lies! He even admits it! We want good government, but we’ve been screwed so many times that the choice for most voters is very difficult. Getting the Ontario electorate to change stripes will be difficult, but its doable. The polls are indicating change in the right direction. In case all you Western cowboys are getting ready to shoot me, I’m voting PC, so holster your guns!

  16. Gabby,
    “Just the facts, ma’am.”
I know what you’re saying. The gun is never seen pointing at the girl in the same frame at the same moment. But consider the way you would see it done in the movies, i.e.: Fear and anxiety in the face of victim/Closeup of gun/Cut to an unsuspecting happy scene. The Liberal ad uses the same methodology.
I’ll start where Kate’s gif starts off. This is what I see:
..Harper uses perceived threatening gesture pointing right. (has already been established as angry and maybe even evil in previous frames).
Little Girl shudders. fade to black.
Martin says: Hand__s off (backdrop), points his finger (pointing right).
Harper (close-up) fades in with shifty eyes glancing to his right (back at Martin).
Disolve to 45 auto being raised into the frame pointing left. fade to black.
Martin walks out of the darkness towards the light.
    All praise PMPM !
    The end.
    Thanx 4 kudo.
    Back to you Marlin Perkins.

  17. “Next thing you know, our Ontario Provincial Police are implicated in killing a native on a reserve because he (Dudley George) was stopping them from encroaching on their sacred grounds.”
Quick: i’ts a test – and no Googling.
What was the name of the Quebec police officer killed during the OKA standoff?

  18. Barnstormer,
Thanks for the illuminating dissection of the ad and Kate’s gif (what’s a gif??). Unfortunately, a 30 second ad, if that long, will not receive the same kind of analysis you have devoted to it.
Don’t worry, I’m still supporting the Conservatives. I’m not that easy to dissuade.
Oh, oh! I think I hear the call of the wild …

  19. As the comedian Larry Miller once said:
“Voting Liberal in this election is like putting a container of sour milk back in the fridge and wondering if it will be fresh tomorrow.”

  20. Duke, SLOW DOWN!! The ssm thingie is not important to you but it is to a lot of other people in this country. Most people, like myself, could care less what people do in or out of the closet with consenting adults but those of us who are against ANY relationship BUT the union of one man and one woman being called marrige extends well past the doors of the courthouse. Lawyers are rubbing their hands in glee because living arrangement situations like the old ‘same sex roomate to save money’ arrangement, will end up in court- when one roomate moves out this ‘common -law’ thingie it will make same sex roomates liable for lawsuits; kids who stay home with mom or dad will be able to marry mom or dad – if the kid is same sex- and steal their siblings share of family estates. etc. etc. Use your imagination!!!)
Why would ss people want the title ‘marriage’? What good does it do them? The lawyers want it Duke – most politicians are Lawyers.
Elsie Wayne has done lots for vets and Merchant Marines. I watch the House of Commons – she is on the same side as us and Stephen Harper – the side of honesty, decency, respect … also, she, like myself, wants the word of God respected in this country.

  21. The clips are From One Leader version 2 – the clip with the little girl comes from the child care ad. There’s another ‘scary’ Harper clip – enlargement of his ‘scary’ pale blue eyes. Then there’s the one of the gun aimed at the previous Harper clip – if I’m imagining that one being a subliminal threatening message, then call me a liberal. After making the mistake of watching Neal Macdonald the other night, I’d believe anything was possible. Where does that venom come from I wonder?

  22. gif…is a graphical interchange format file. A digital image that can be animated unlike a jpeg which can not. A gif tends to be more pastel in nature as opposed to it’s high contrast cousin the jpeg or jpg.
