Un*Poof*

We bloggers have had some experience with Government of Canada websites becoming slightly less user friendly – or disappearing altogether.
So, it’s curious when they reappear;

After the 2003 Liberal leadership campaign, the Liberal candidate disclosures, including those of Paul Martin, mysteriously disappeared from public view.
Now, for reasons I do not yet understand, Paul Martin’s list of donors is back online. Why would they suddenly re-appear? Why now?
Is Paul trying to pre-empt questions on this?

  1. The Liberals are going to pull out their biggest, nastiest, most caustic ammo right now. They need to stop the Conservative momentum and they think they can do it with Harper’s campaign donations.
Look out, here comes the big Liberal attack..(better be good…real good)

  2. I think the beurocrats are prying things loose. As I noted in another thread it’s time to CYA. With all hell breaking loose their trying to protect themselves and at the same time ensure the Libs don’t make some miraculous comeback. I’m sure many have held their noses and looked the other way for the sake of their careers. Payback is truely a Bitch!!

  3. I heard that the Liberals have hired some Anmerican big advertising guns and strategists to take over the war room and campaign. Any truth to this?

  4. There’s also the possibility (as mentioned at TT), that they want to use something in it to attack Harper, and need the database back up.
But with the donations to Martin also back online, it’s a tricky proposition to draw attention to it.

  5. We’ll probably have some indication in the next few days if the Libs intend to make campaign funding an issue. This thing could get real messy. What is the potential danger to the Cons??

  6. Damage to the CPC? If there was anything amiss in Harper’s donations..do you think it wouldn’t have come out by now?
After a second look, I’ll bet the webmaster restored the website to an older backed-up date, and that’s why Martin’s records re-appeared.
No conspiracy theories here..but I have saved all Martin’s donors to peruse at my leisure.

  7. I agree with JL (and good one Plato)
The last thing the Liberals want to do is focus everyone on campaign financing, especially considering AdScam and the fact that the Libs won’t reveal what ridings were tainted.
If they bring it up, it’s suicide.

  8. I find it interesting that on the Archives
    Candidate Disclosure
    Paul Martin – 4th Disclosure
Contributions, including contributions in-kind, collected outside of a blind trust, which are known to the candidate
(Reporting Period – January 1, 2003 to close of business on February 28, 2003)
    Cash Contributions
    Magna International Inc. 20,000.00
If the list had been available,we would have known that Belindas Company had supported PMPMs personal campaign………..hmmmm….devious Libranos

  9. I think that you are on to something JL. Today on Paul Newman’s gush and kiss the socialist show , Susan Murry (Lib , former CBC, spokes- yapper) said the Firearms people had financed Stephen’s leadership campaign. Is Peter MaCay still dating the brittle Desmaras divorcee? Things that make you go hmmmm.

  10. Of course, the Liberals are desperate. I think they might be simply grasping at straws and hoping that something, anything, will help them.
At this point they may be willing to try anything.
Ominously reminds me of what a while back happened in Ukraine w/ the Orange Revolution…
Could the government somehow rig the election?

Mole? Collusion? Leak(s)? Finance Dept. under the aegis of one Ralph Goodale? Office of PMO, aka Paul Martin & staff? Others in public office?
Was/were there an act/acts of “breach of trust” in the federal government?
Penalties for an act of “breach of trust” are/should be severe. Say, 5 years in prison.

  12. Was Goodale battered down/browbeaten by Martin & “others”. Who are these “others”? Public officials? Investors? Investor groups? Who? What? When? Where/ Why?
“Units of some beaten-up trusts moved higher in advance of Mr. Goodale’s announcement, said Mr. Palombi.” Who was/were the “advance” people who knew? >>>
Units of some beaten-up trusts moved higher in advance of Mr. Goodale’s announcement, said Mr. Palombi. This takes away so much of the uncertainty, around business trusts especially.
Yellow Pages Income Fund soared 93 cents or 6.6 per cent to $15.02 Wednesday, and Mr. Palombi expects it could get another 5 to 6-per-cent lift tomorrow.
BCE Inc., one of the companies with the largest dividend yields on the benchmark index, soared $1.30 or 4.9 per cent to $27.90, marking its biggest percentage single-day gain since October 2001. BCE has a dividend yield of 4.7 per cent compared with a yield of about 1.6 per cent for the S&P/TSX composite index. (BCE controls Bell Globemedia, the owner of The Globe and Mail and CTV. )
Rothman’s Inc., which has a yield of about 4.7 per cent, jumped $1.24 to $24.38, while Manitoba Telecom Services Inc. jumped $1.42 to $42.40. Manitoba Tel has a dividend yield of 6 per cent.
Just last week, Mr. Goodale said the government’s new policy on the sector would not be ready until January. The news was likely fast-tracked because of the imminent federal election.
Given the uncertainty surrounding how long this session of Parliament will last, as well as the need for greater certainty and stability in the income trust market, there is a clear case for immediate action, Mr. Goodale said. The overwhelming consensus of submissions received in our consultation process was to reduce personal income tax on dividends. >>>

  13. I guess if the liberals want to use some suggestion of innuendo about Harper’s past leadership fundraising, I guess its fair game to publically ask them to say why its an issue now?
What are they saying? That past fundraising for leaderships is an issue?
    Fair enough.
So tell us Paul, was this the real reason Chretien fired you as FN? Where you skimming/redirecting the cut that was suppose to be kicked back to the liberal party into your leadership warchest?
The order of events up to your pink slip seem to suggest some detail has been hidden.
In May of that year the AG makes the first report of things not kosher in the area of sponsorships.
On June 2 of that same year, Paul’s out of finance, not clear from either Martin or Chretien whether he was fired or resigned.
I think its time for Bucky to be clear on this.
Was he fired, or did he resign?
Maybe Warren Kinsella can shed some light on this?

  14. Clear…..
The libs have mentioned Harpers leadership campaign donar list in the past. This is preparing the ground.
If Harper can release he should….its old news
Now does anyone remeber the Bush DUI story and its timing?
When will the Libs drop a bomb (not saying harper has a DUI or cocain story) just something else.
My guess is the dangerous days are the 17th throught 19th….if the libs dont drop a bomb by the 19th they have nothing to drop.
Need to do by the 19th so they can hit the pre election weekend media cycle but leave the conservatives no time to respond.
That one story was credited with preventing Bush from getting a clean win in 2000…without it there would have been no drama in Florida and Bush would likely have won the popular vote.
Watch for a repeat of it here…..It will come from an old speech or the Liberals will find some “significant MP” to quote with some outrageous story or plan…..(the whole platform is a lie there really is a hidden agenda and it involves abortion banning, charter overrides, corporate tax cuts, major spending reductions in health and Canada’s participation in an invasion of Iran)

  15. ** Leadership campaign ** disclosure *** rules in 2002 did not *** require listing donors.
Bill C-24 June 2003 changed that some as seen from Hansard’s:
    http://www.parl.gc.ca/common/bills_ls.asp?Parl=37&Ses=2&ls=c24#APolitical
“Party leadership campaigns are currently outside the ambit of the Canada Elections Act. This has long been identified as a gap in the system….
Various reforms to leadership campaigns have been suggested, most fundamentally transparency in financing by requiring reports regarding contributions and expenses. This concept is introduced in Bill C-24.
The suggestion of imposing spending limits on leadership candidates has not been adopted in Bill C-24; any such limits will remain the responsibility of the political party involved.”
…..No limits are imposed on the costs of leadership campaigns, but surpluses will have to be dealt with as set out in the bill.”

  16. Those lists were discolsed on the 11th day of every month dring the leadership campaign. When will any Conservatives – Harper, MacKay, Day, ever reveal their donors? When?
