As Candace points out in the comments, it’s possible he doesn’t know how. To be fair, it’s likely that the wagon carried no spare or jack – not that it mattered as the right rear tire was also going flat.
However, consider this alternate outcome;
Recognizing that his hay wagon stunt was degenerating into photo-op meltdown, Martin might have demonstrated common sense, compassion and leadership all at the same time. How?
By getting out to walk– by asking the driver to pull up, and leading the passengers off the overloaded, disabled wagon to spare the horses from the undue strain of pulling what was close to a dead weight.
A brief stop to pat Nellie’s neck on the way by, and he could have been a hero.
Instead, he planted a stupid grin on his face, and led a sing-a-long as soundtrack to his own utter stupidity.
Hush girl. Don’t you be helping Mr. dithers now. Actually, he should have just reflagged the wagon, fired the Canadian hands and brought in minimum wage ununionized foreign labour to carry the cart before the horses.
Having been blessed without CBC or CTV coverage from down here, I am slightly querious as to how the MSM handled this photo-op.

Yeah, and there is nothing worse for a 4-legged mammal than stress itself. Stressing a 4-legged mammal isn’t like doling out stress to us humans – their idea of coping is to take years off of their life, period. No meditation, no video games, no exercise regimen, no religion, no TV, none of that.
Take this from somebody who raises cattle w/ his family on a 7-acre ranch: Your Prime Minister is cruel to animals. And had those horses got hurt, they may have had to be put down.
Seriously, I saw the whole thing on Regina TV, and those big plough horses hardly noticed the load. Even with Ralph goodale on the wagon. 🙂

Strangely enough, a picture – flat tire and all – made it to the front page of the Toronto Star today. The caption read ‘Rough campaign ride for Martin’.
I imagine somebody had some splainin’ to do. Then again, the Star has been somewhat rough on Martin lately. Even it’s editors seem to find fault with him and that’s saying a lot.
By the way, I only read the Star for an occaisional dose of socialist dogma. I get it free. The Star has more promotions than I have taxes to pay. They boast a huge circulation but I truly believe they give away more than they sell. Anything to further the cause…
All that was required to salvage the photo-op, was to paint the wagon green and spin it as the latest delivery of a long awaited MILITARY UPGRADE!!!

Dangerous game
Bashing our southern neighbours might have dire consequences

The contemptuous tone taken by Liberal leader Paul Martin in his anti-American ranting unveils a side of our supposed prime minister that’s been previously shielded to most voters.
It is he will do anything — no matter how low, no matter how politically unethical, no matter how dangerous — to try to score points and eke out extra seats in the House of Commons come voting day Jan. 23.
His shrill and silly accusations against President George W. Bush’s administration may make for good theatre with the uniformed, but they diminish both our short-term and long- term relationship with Washington.
Has no one wondered why it took so long to solve the ban on our packaged beef and then live cattle destined for the U.S?
Brian Mulroney — or Preston Manning, Stockwell Day or Stephen Harper — would have solved it with a phone call.
Has no one wondered why the softwood lumber dispute drags on year-after-year?
Mulroney — or Manning, Day or Harper — again would have solved it with a snap of the fingers.
Has no one wondered why Martin can’t get his foot in the door of the Oval Office at the White House to push Canada’s case on any number of issues?
Mulroney — or Manning, Day or Harper — would get the nod from the Bush administration on just about every concern the mind could conjure up on Canadian-American relations.
But Martin’s irresponsible and reckless treatment of Bush has brought the blinds down on the Liberal government.
The beef and softwood lumber disputes alone cost Canadian producers billions of dollars.
All due to Martin’s vanity, obstinacy and childish bellowing.
I can’t say I’ve ever had too much time for Liberal strategist Warren Kinsella — except to admit somewhat negatively to his cleverness in slurring Conservative opponents — but even he condemns Martin’s “shameless pandering” to anti-American types.
So now I somewhat admire Kinsella for something more positive: He knows just what Martin is up to, and why, and he sees the inherent danger in it.
Martin sneakily condemns U.S. Ambassador David Wilkins for allegedly interfering in Canadian politics when he himself stood on a stage a week ago with ex-president Bill Clinton and basked in this adulterer’s supposed vote-getting power.
Both men were in Montreal for the UN’s climate change conference, and Martin took the occasion to publicly chastise Bush for not supporting the Kyoto pact. >>>

Well, anyone that has been raised around animals, this is just plain pathetic! The wagon reminds me of how the liberal’s have been running this country. If you checked the online MSM photos of the team-reining Captain Canada you would see which have the photo clipped not to show how flat his campaign is.

Back in the day when we used horses to haul evertthing, it was not unusual to use horses to haul manure out to the fields. The horses in the picture are merely carrying on a family tradition!
Alisa, If that comment was directed at Kate, I think she probably has a VERY good idea of life in the prairies! After all, most of Saskatchewan is rural area, half hour in any direction and you are in the country! I agree with Kate, the horses were pulling a load of dead weight!
Please, we all know what martin’s version of “fixing” something is:
“Let me tell you something: fixing the tires is a very, very, important part of maintaining this wagon and is vital to Canadian values. I will not hesitate to stand up for our tires, I want you to know that.”
he would then spend an inordinate amount of time and money on the project and then try to fix all four tires equally at once to avoid offending anyone, and tell anyone who wanted to fix just the broken tire that they were “unfit to drive the wagon”.

Alisa, I grew up around horses. Watching the video, they weren’t having an easy time of it. Do you know what happens when a heavily loaded trailer blows a tire? It can no longer roll forward as efficiently The horses were not only pulling a heavily loaded wagon, it was dragging an anchor.
Yet more proof that Martin has no real intelligence. Image and control are everything for him. We see in the post that he failed in both respects in the futile attempt to have both. A smart person would’ve seen the futility. Martin cannot.
Think about the broader implications of this apparent shortcoming of his.
And you’ll realize he has absolutely no business running Canada, or any nation for that matter.
He’s no prime minister at all.
This has to naturally be an election he must lose. It’s almost like a law of physics.
