Wow, “Palestine” got the same rating as Iraq? This ranking is supposed to rate “Freedoms” of the countries right?
I understood that Fatah had rigged the last elections in their favour despite popular support for Hamas (this likely the reason why the PA has been unable to crack down on violence conducted by Hamas; Hamas has the support of the majority of the population).
From what I have read the Iraqi elections were deemed to be fair. Both countries have problems of internal violence, however wouldn’t it seem Iraq is a much freer society from a democratic standpoint? (eg. Fair elections?)
I thought that was odd, too. Perhaps they’re stronger on indicators that aren’t obvious…=
The EIU has a very similar view to the EU/Axis of Weasel view on Palestinians v Israelis if you catch my drift.
A lot of the rating is probably based on freedom on paper (ie multi-party elections held, don’t care they were fixed). Since a lot of the states on that list don’t even bother with the fiction, the EU-quagmire known as “palestine” does pretty well.
Hmmm, I know that Afghanistan is kindof on the border, but doesn’t it qualify as being in the Middle East? I’d like to see where it comes in. It’s pretty interesting to see how low our good friends the Saudi’s place!
It’s nice to see that those great Allies in the war on terror like Saudi Arabia and Libya (not to mention Syria, the torture sub-contractor) are doing so well.
It’s an interesting list. The countries rated as having the most political freedom are the most unstable, and are practically at war — Israel, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine are all in the top five.
Those countries which rank low on the index of political freedom are relatively peaceful and free from suicide bombings, and so on — UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Libya, Syria, Bahrain.
It still amazes me how the left — like Mr. Daly just above us — continue to insist that the endemic violence in the freer Middle Eastern countries has been caused by the actions of the free world — the western world, Israel — even when it becomes perfectly clear that the violence is caused by those who oppose freedom.
