  1. That waste, inefficiency and corruption mean that we _don’t_ get all the government we pay for.

Letter of Pierre Laporte to Robert Bourassa
Letter sent on October 11, 1970
    My dear Robert,
I feel like I am writing the most important letter I have ever written.
For the time being, I am in perfect health, and I am treated well, even courteously.
In short, the power to decide over my life is in your hands. If there was only that involved, and the sacrifice of my life would bring good results, one could accept it …
You know how my personal situation deserves to draw attention. I had two brothers, both are now dead. I remain alone as the head of a large family that comprises my mother, my sisters, my own wife and my children, and the children of Rolland of whom I am the guardian. My departure would create for them irreparable grief, and you know the ties that bind the members of my family …
You have the power of life and death over me, I depend on you and I thank you for it.
    Best regards,
    Pierre Laporte

  6. Oh and by the way, it’s was Frank Zappa who once said ….
“Socialism can never work because people like to own stuff” Frank Zappa
There is genius in that statement.

  10. Steve like dogs, I like blogs.
I am thankful I can think for myself.
I am happy that I know right from wrong, even if the political party that runs the government of my country does not.
I am glad I have my health.

  11. I’m thankful that I live in Calgary, I have a great job that I love 90% of the time, and great friends. My family gets on my nerves more often than not – but I’m thankful that they are still here to get on my nerves.

  12. I’m thankful for…
My wonderful wife who I’m sure I don’t deserve, but that I could not live without.
My beautiful daughter who has taught me to see the world with wonder and excitement once again.
My in-laws who share so many of my wife’s qualities that it would be impossible not to love them.
The beautiful country that I live in.
Living in a home that’s paid for in a place that I love.
Not having to worry about where the next meal is coming from.
Finally having a career where every minute of ‘work’ I do is absolute bliss.
The freedoms I enjoy that are not available to many others in the world today.
Another 24 hours clean and sober.
Our neighbors to the south who, while we do not agree on everything, have faithfully shouldered so much of the burden we have placed on them. They have been good friends to us.
People like Kate who challenge my thinking and push me in new directions.

  14. So much to be thankful for, so little time…but I think it light of the latest blog post that the Lost Budgie alerted me too, I’m going to be thankful that — currently — I can practice my faith without fear of persecution.
Or at least without fear of the kind of persecution that involves .45 cal brain trauma.
