To nobody’s surprise, the MSM has all but ignored the Fraser Institute report (mentioned here a few days ago) on the extent of the Liberal Party of Canada abuse of the government purse for their own electoral benefit.
Stephen Taylor has been doing their job for us. Perhaps some enterprising young reporter will take the initiative and steal his work. One can only hope.
Particularly striking were donations made to the Liberal Party of Canada by the RCMP and by the Privy Council Office.
For the “privilege” of protecting the Prime Minister and other members of his campaign team during the 2000 campaign, the RCMP paid the Liberal Party $112,000 for seats accompanying the PM.
The Fraser Institute reports:
“It is an apparent conflict of interest for government agencies, especially those engaged in law enforcement, to pay a governing political party for services rendered during an election. This financial entanglement can impair perceptions of independence and due process that are essential to the proper functioning of those agencies.” — Fraser Institute report, July 2005
One would expect that the taxpayer would pay for the services of the RCMP to protect the Prime Minister. However, it is counter-intuitive that the RCMP (ie. the taxpayer) would pay a private organization (ie. the Liberal party) for work done by the federal law enforcement agency.
The Privy Council Office paid $44,000 to the Liberal Party for similar “services”.

Heh… I read that comment thread. Pretty funny. I thought the justification was full of crap. If it was “just” that they were paying their own travel expenses, I have to ask, “why?” An security firm in existence, when hired by a given employer, does not pay travel expenses. They charge their employer for them. Comparing it to reporters who ride along doesn’t hold water either – reporters are there to do their job, not work for the politician they are travelling with. They are not in the politician’s employ – they are in their newspaper’s employ. Big difference.
I think it is far more relevant to show how accurate and “fair” the Fraser Institute has been with past issues before accusations of “spin” are pronounced on their latest efforts. The fact is they were right about C-68 and they were right about health care. The reason the MSM are ignoring them now is because they KNOW they are right. They have learned their lesson – not wanting to be caught calling attention to someone who speaks truth not of their agenda, they have chosen to begin a campaign of ignoring them, hoping they will just go away.
Sadly, the MSM doesn’t understand that it is they who are going away as more and more people realize that the new media do not ignore sources of info that disagree with them. Good riddance.

We have a new free short form paper in our community and it is being tried in Vancouver as well. The idea is to get young people interested in reading a paper.
It will not work. You can’t fold it in half and put it in a back pocket.
A 12 to 30 page 6″ x 8″ may possibly work though. Heck, I’d go for that myself. A paper you carry with both hands free. Great!

Well, Tony, whenever I cannot access the Internet I will only pick up the NP if available.
However, the NP, in my opinion, isn’t the same anymore. It was worthy of my praise under Lord Black’s ownership, but as it has fallen under Librano ownership by the Aspers, it has changed and moved too far into moonie territory for me to be quite as enthusiastic.
BTW, I still have the very first issue of the NP, with John Glenn and Wayne Gretzky on the front page, plus the headline “Klein Backs Unite the Right Initiative”. So I can compare the tone then to the tone today.
Still, it’s superior to the G&M, which is and always has been quite moony to me.

I have for long suspected the RCMP is corrupt. It never investigates the wrongdoing of the Libranos. If it has to put on a show of looking into Libby wrongdoing, it’ll simply exonerate them due to what they claim to be a lack of evidence to prompt an investigation. This happens all the time. The info Mr. Taylor gave us just reinforces my suspicions.
See, this is how I come to understand what’s going on in the real world. I observe and identify an indisputable pattern and watch for more evidence to back up what I believe.
So, let me get this straight. I pay my taxes to the gummint. They use some of those funds to maintain a federal police force. Said police force siphons off a portion of that and pays it back to a party which I despise…. C’MON!!!!! That can’t be true! Next, you’ll be telling me the government issues untendered multi-million dollar federal contracts to specific companies with the expectation that they’ll pay part of the loot back under the table to the party in power. This just doesn’t happen in a democracy.
