Selling Out The Vote

Janice Johnson says Charles Meechance walked into her living room, flashed a thick wad of $50 and $100 bills, and asked her to hand over her blank mail-in ballot for the upcoming Red Pheasant First Nation election.

She took the money.
If Meechance purchased enough votes to win the election, one has to consider the old adage about voters who get “the government they deserve”.

  1. Hmmmmm sounds a lot like Librano$ cheque book election $tyle to me. And you thought the natives are slow learners?

  2. Not just sounds like – my guess is that the funds originated with some Indian affairs program or another – so, it’s not “style”. It’s the same checkbook, with the middlemen cut out of the action.

Since 1997, the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) has been urging the federal government to implement a system of private property ownership on Indian reserves as a means of empowering natives and reducing poverty. The CTF was encouraged earlier this year when Indian Affairs Minister Andy Scott expressed interest in implementing such reforms. Yet all that has been done to date is a lot of talking.
Aboriginals on reserves cannot own the land they live on. Even the tribes themselves cannot own the land. Instead, the land is held in trust by the Canadian government.
It is demeaning to aboriginals for the federal
government to continue to hold title to Canadas Indian reserves. Aboriginals should decide on a band-by-band basis whether their long-term interests are to be achieved through the private ownership of land, or the existing collectivist approach. Until that has been established, aboriginals are doomed to a life of poverty and dependency on government handouts because without private property rights wealth creation can not happen. Drive through almost any reserve in the country today and the evidence is ample.

  7. Regarding owning property, why, if the land must be held ‘in trust’ can’t they get 99-yr leases like homeowners do in national parks?

  8. Candace- they CAN get 99year leases on Crown Land. ( and they can arrange them for other people, too.)

  10. I read somewhere the stall in portioning land out to the natives is caused by the chiefs&councils. How close is that to liberal-communism and the nanny state?
